Lake Nyos in Cameroon has been described as one of the deadliest water bodies in the world, responsible for a deadly natural disaster that took the lives of many as well as domestic animals on August 21, 1986. Lake Nyos is very deep. It is more than 650 feet and surrounded by rocky cliffs. In the tropical climate of Cameroon, the warm superficial water layer will form a sort of cap covering the entire lake, according to reports. On August 21, the village of Lower Nyos had gone to bed early the previous day but by morning, about 1,800 people and 3,000 domestic animals were discovered lying dead on the ground. A strange and rare volcanic phenomenon, associated with the nearby Lake Nyos had claimed their lives. According to Smithsonian Magazine, that fateful night, “many of the victims were found right where they’d normally be around 9 o’clock at night, suggesting they died on the spot. Bodies lay near cooking fires, clustered in doorways and in bed. Some people who had lain unconscious for more than a day finally awoke, saw their family members lying dead and then committed suicide.” Lake Nyos is located along the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL), a 950-mile long chain of volcanoes and volcanic crater lakes extending from the Gulf of Guinea into Cameroon and Nigeria. Panoramic view of Lake Nyos after the disaster. Panoramic view of Lake Nyos after the disaster – Pic Credit: USGS According to Forbes, the origin of the CVL is still not completely understood. “It is possible that during the breakup of Africa from South America some 150 million years ago, a third rift started to develop, but failed to become an oceanic basin like the Atlantic Ocean”. Geologists are still not sure why the cap of warm water, holding the gases on the bottom of the lake, failed that night since volcanic gases, like sulfur- and carbon-dioxide, coming from the ground, become more and more concentrated at the bottom of the lake. Just before the catastrophe, survivors recalled a rumbling noise was heard from the vicinity of Lake Nyos. A cloud, with a density higher than the surrounding air, traveled as far as 15 miles from the lake into the surrounding valleys. Some survivors later reported a strange smell believed to have been from the sulfuric gases, and scores of people suddenly collapsed. Since the volcanic origin of the lakes was unknown to people, they attributed the lake’s act to supernatural powers, like gods, spirits or angry ancestors. People, therefore, ignored Lake Nyos and its surrounding for a long time until later. One of the most baffling disasters, scientists in their investigations assumed “the long-dormant volcano under its crater had erupted, spewing out some kind of deadly fumes,” according to the report by the Smithsonian. Over the years, however, the researchers uncovered “a monstrous, far more insidious geologic disaster—one thought to exist only in myth,” the report added. The researchers also discovered that the disaster could happen again at Nyos and at least one additional lake nearby – Lake Monoun, which on August 15, 1984, recorded an explosion, most likely caused by a sudden gas eruption, killing 37 people. In a bid to prevent these lakes from exploding again, engineers, in 2011, installed pipes in both to suck CO2 from the lake bed and release it very gradually into the air, according to Science Alert. A dam has since been built around the wall of Lake Nyos to protect it. Despite these preventive measures, the lake is still considered by many experts as dangerous and the 1986 event is still engraved in the minds of Cameroonians. The considerably small lake, which turned dull red at the time is now once again blue and tranquil. “Nyos,” in the regional Mmen language, means “good,” but in Itangikom, a related tongue, it means “to crush.” Source...... https://face2faceafrica.com/article/lake-nyos-the-deadly-lake-in-cameroon-that-once-claimed-over-1700-lives-overnight

When the judiciary have been raped already....justice can never be attained.. |
No coughing again.....but this thing is scary |
To me all these funds and grants is making Nigeria more prone to poverty as if we don't have enough money on our own .. we take from them, the loans and grants , generate our own money too....loot the two at once |
What is Nigeria waiting for?... When are we doing our own Nigerian trials ![]() |

I do not believe in this results anymore. The slow pace at which testing is being carried out is a cause for concern. There is community transmission and yet our method for testing have not been reviewed. Lockdown, lockdown, yet NCDC no dey fast.... what's the essence of the lockdown? |
Why is Lagos State not included?. Does it mean a clean sheet? I doubt... Meanwhile, if this result is true, Kano state is in a mess . |
Hahahaha...so the marlian king apologized ?..... |

#COVID 19# : BEFORE IT BECOMES A CATASTROPHE IN NIGERIA. It is no longer news that the novel Corona Virus is in Nigeria and it is fast spreading especially in FCT, (Abuja) and Lagos State and some other states having one or two cases. Lest we forget, when it comes to power, religion, economy, social etc Abuja and Lagos State stays up there in the curve. The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed few days ago informed the nation that more than 4000 Nigerians who came in contact with confirmed cases are being traced to facilitate testing for convid 19, for possible treatment if the results are positive. As at the time of this write up, a little above 260 individuals have been traced and tested with 81 coming out positive. This is over a period of 2 weeks. Despite the relatively low numbers, one of the main worries is what will happen once the virus reaches the crowded inner cities and townships. Health professionals agree that only a drastic public health response can prevent the virus from spreading at a fast pace, warning that societal factors such as lack of access to information, non compliance and lack of sense of empowerment - people often do not know where to seek help or what they can do to protect themselves - complicates the fight to contain COVID-19. It is disheartening to see and hear grown up individuals making statements like.... "Corona na scam, Nigerian Government want use am chop money"....... "Corona no fit catch African man" . Information is an important tool that should be employed to fight the virus. Many Nigerians do not know or hear the truth concerning the virus. False information shared in Whatsapp groups and other social media platforms perpetuate the confusion. "A Palestinian scientist has found the vaccine against corona" is one message circulating in the community groups. Another one reads: "Corona can be cured by boiling 8 tablespoons of garlic and 6 cups of water."......" Hot temperature in Africa Wil kill the virus" . This sort of information seems appealing to people , this ought to stop through proper dissemination of information in any way humanly possible. Many state governments are already giving directives and order , placing ban on all religious activities, ban on social gatherings including burials and weddings, amongst others. This is commendable and necessary due to the issue at hand. There is a problem, the problem is not in the directives, but the citizens. From the streets of Calabar to the streets in Kano , Nigerians are flaunting the directives in every way possible. Burials going on, churches are gathering, Muslims are trooping to the mosque, weddings are going on, transporters are flaunting the directives, betting shops are still having customers crowded in a small space. If Italy, Spain , USA , China are on their knees despite their good health care systems, what about Nigeria with her dilapidated health system. Think of the possibility of Nigeria not having a fast testing procedure. On the average, it takes the Nigerian center for Disease control (NCDC) 2days for it to carry out a single test. Think of the possibility of Nigeria not being able to track more than 4000 Nigerians who came in contact with the confirmed cases. Think of the possibility of Nigerians running away from possible testing. Think of the repercussion of a Nigerian who is unaware that he/she is positive, walks around shaking hands, opening doors, sneezing, using the ATM etc. Think. Before catastrophe comes, let us as citizens know that we are to be blamed if we neglect and disobey simple instructions from our government. If we carry on as if nothing is happening, some of us may not even have a life .Once this infection starts spreading in taxis and buses, betting shops, markets, restaurants, supermarkets etc it will create a new dynamic which only God will help us. Let us wake up and stop the spread. Stay safe. Written by Ekere Tommy, a 500L student in the Department of Food Science And Technology, Unical. |

Where did you get the story of lucifer from? The Bible does not talk about lucifer except in Isaiah where the prophet Isaiah used it to describe king Nebuchadnezar's wicked rule (since He was claiming to be de bright & morning star.)..Codedly ,Isaiah was telling Nebuchadnezar that lucifer (which means morning star) will one day fall from his heaven (throne) ....Isaiah 14:12. |
