Crime / Talibes Mordern Day Slaves’: This Story Will Break Your Heart by ekog: 2:05pm On Jan 04, 2017
Mario Cruz gained rare access to the dark side of many Koranic schools in Senegal, known as daaras, and captured disturbing but stunning photographs of the lives of young boys subjected to slave-like conditions. The book Talibes Modern Day Slaves documents an alarming social condition for at least 50,000 young boys in Senegal aged between five and 15.

Koranic boarding schools in Senegal, known as daaras, traditionally give children between the ages of five and fifteen a religious education and teach them Arabic. But the schools are highly unregulated, and conditions in many are poor, with near-starving children living in overcrowded, unsanitary circumstances. The pupils, or talibés, are beaten and sometimes kept in chains for hours on end. Some are the victims of child-trafficking. Talibés are frequently made to beg on the streets for up to eight or nine hours a day, giving all they collect to their marabout (teacher).

The first picture is about a young talibé who is bound by chains in an isolation area of a daara in Touba, Senegal, May 2015. In this daara the youngest talibés are shackled by their ankles to stop them from running away. These children can stay like that for days, weeks, even months until they gain the marabout’s trust.

Culture / The History Of Oshodi (tapa) Of Lagos by ekog: 4:20pm On Nov 28, 2016
Chief Balogun Landuji Oshodi Tapa was an outstanding warrior and a statesman. During the reign of King Eshilokun, he immigrated to Lagos from Bida in what is now known as the Niger State. This was after he had lost his parents in a tribal war when he was only six years old. He put himself under the protection of the King as his servant in order to prevent himself from being taken and sold into slavery. The King in turn put him under the supervision of one of his trusted men, Fagbemi.

Some years later, one of the Portuguese merchants, a friend of King Eshilokun, asked the king to let two of his children accompany him to Portugal and he promised to bring them back. The King was very wary of this offer and he thought instead of risking the lives of any of his own children, he would offer two people loyal to him. Hence he chose Oshodi and Dada Antonio to go with the Portuguese merchant.

While the King thought he was protecting the interests of his own children, he was in fact denying them an opportunity that would have benefited them more in the future.

Oshodi and Dada Antonio went with the Portuguese merchant to America and they were later returned to the King after many years.

On arrival from America, Oshodi was employed by Messrs. G. L. Gaiser as a Commission Agent and Toll Collector. With the arrival of the ships of the Portuguese merchants, business flourished, and Oshodi’s commissions from sales increased and he eventually became a rich man. Oshodi never forgot the hands that fed him, so to speak; he continued to be loyal to the King and was made a chief solely responsible for looking after the King’s wives. He was the only one who could go into the Queen’s apartment to oversee repairs if the need arose.

After the death of King Eshinlokun, Chief Oshodi remained loyal to his children. He particularly cast his lot with Idewu Ojulari who succeeded his father. After the reign of Chief Idewu Ojulari, Kosoko, a son of Oshinlokun, was said to be the rightful heir to the throne, but he was an enemy of Chief Eletu Odibo, whose duty was to install and crown any new king. It was said at the time, that young Prince Kosoko had seduced Eletu Odibo’s would-be wife. In retaliation, Eletu Odibo used his powerful position to crown Oluwole as the next King of Lagos in 1836.

Kosoko and other descendants of King Eshilokun were not satisfied with the decision and were ready to show their resentment. They waged a war against King Oluwole and Chief Eletu Odibo. Kosoko and his warriors invaded Isale-Eko. The battle was fierce and prolonged but ended with a victory on the side of the king’s army. Kosoko fled to Whydah, realising the consequences of his action.

When King Oluwole died, Akitoye was crowned in 1841 as the next King of Lagos.

Conscious of the right of Kosoko to the throne, Akitoye justly decided to search for Kosoko his nephew, who had taken refuge in Whydah. He believed that he must enjoy his patronage while on the throne. Akitoye organised a search party under the command of bold and gallant Chief Oshodi. The rapidity with which the party achieved its success was directly related to the military might of Chief Oshodi.

Kosoko finally returned to Lagos with Chief Oshodi in a vessel belonging to a merchant called, Domingo.

Henceforth, Chief Oshodi worked to maintain peace between Kosoko and Akintoye, and eventually brought the two together on terms. The peace effort was thwarted by Chief Eletu Odibo who had employed all the persuasive words he could, to dissuade King Akitoye from bringing Kosoko back to Lagos. He believed that Lagos would not contain the two of them. For a while, he did all he could to create conflicts between them, but later left Lagos for exile in Badagry.

When a war broke out between King Akitoye and Kosoko, Chief Oshodi loyally pitched his tent with Kosoko, the son of Eshilokun, through thick and thin. Akitoye asked Eletu Odibo to return to Lagos with his warriors to fight on his side. Akitoye’s men led by Eletu Odibo were soundly defeated. Eletu Odibo was captured in an ambush and killed.

With the death of Eletu Odibo, the elders advised Akitoye to escape to his mother’s town in Abeokuta. When Kosoko heard about the plan, he detailed his war chief, Oshodi, to lay ambush for Akitoye........continue read here http://farabaleweekly.com/2016/11/26/the-history-of-oshodi-tapa-of-lagos/

Romance / Why It Is Necessary To Have A Small Wedding by ekog: 8:59am On Nov 22, 2016
These days, however, a few people are breaking away from the norm and getting more inclined to the white man’s way of thinking, the smaller the better. We now have strictly by invitation weddings which a few years ago would not have been possible because the couple and the family would be seen as selfish and people would go around saying, “you ate other people’s wedding rice but you don’t want people to eat your own,” I’ve honestly heard this before.

I think the general idea for most wedding ceremonies is misguided and contrary to what it is supposed to be, most people at weddings are not there because of the people getting married but for various ulterior motives. I’ve heard it said once at a wedding that 50% of people at weddings are there for the food, 30% to meet people be it friends or potential spouses and only 20% of people at the wedding are honestly there for the couple.

Why then can’t you make your wedding in such a way that only this 20% are there for your wedding? It’s your wedding after all..........continue read here http://farabaleweekly.com/2016/11/21/why-it-is-necessary-to-have-a-small-wedding/

Business / Why Partying Is Big Business For Africa by ekog: 10:37am On Sep 23, 2016
Over the years party music a.k.a ‘Jollof music’ has proven to be a money spinner for Nigerian and African artistes in general and this is no small thanks to the fact that people on the overly black continent love to celebrate; be it the naming ceremony of a newborn child, birthdays, thanksgivings and even the death of a very old person is celebrated, it is called ‘celebration of life’. These celebrations, in turn, provide jobs and sales for artisans. However, this is not to say that artistes who do a different genre of music don’t make money too.

Meanwhile, there is a new wave of money making party on the continent now and it’s called FESTIVALS. According to David Scowsill, President and CEO of World Travel and Tourism Council, music festivals are an important income stream for local communities and host countries.
“Events bring people together, get infrastructure built, create jobs and help galvanise communities into action around a common purpose, and if executed rightly, local businesses are at the centre of the creation of these types of events.”
“In Africa, the total contribution of travel and tourism in 2015 was $180.0bn, which made up 8.1% of GDP, and the sector supported 7.2% of total employment, which is 22 million jobs,” Scowsill says.

According to CNN, The Lake of Stars Festival – which is an annual festival in Malawi – generates over $1 million for the Malawian economy every year..........continue read here http://farabaleweekly.com/2016/09/22/why-partying-is-big-business-for-africa/

‘The Legend of Abioye’ is a story of an earth bender (Abioye) whose sole companion is a Zebra Lion, a beast that protects Abioye like a mother protects its child and Abioye himself looks after the animal like a man looks after his brother.

A hundred years have passed since Avatar Korra. From the lush jungle lands of a hidden continent yet to be documented on any known map comes rumours of a powerful young earth bender named Abioye.
He lives his life on the run as he is a coveted prize of the ruling Earth bending King that resides over the lands for his unprecedented ability to bend gold. Why run from a life of luxury and riches for all your days you ask? Simple, Abioye dreams of travelling the world and using his gifts to bring fortune to downtrodden lands under oppression from selfish and greedy rulers.

Art, Graphics & Video / How Instagram Is Creating More Jobs For Nigerian Illustrators by ekog: 7:46pm On May 25, 2016
“Your social media profile is an extension of your personality… be it an illusion or reality…for me instagram has really helped promote my works so much that I get commissions and responses in real time. I never knew Nigeria had so many illustrators (good ones at that) until i joined the social media platform, Instagram. However, on facebook some illustrators have been active there too, displaying their fine works, but how come some of us don’t see them? Why is it easier to spot their handiwork on Instagram?

Romance / Balancing Your Work, Life And Relationships by ekog: 5:29pm On May 17, 2016
Managing your Life, Work and Relationship is not an easy task, in fact some people think it is not possible, some part would suffer, maybe work or relationship, but I personally think it is possible to balance your Life, work and your relationship.

Balancing life and relationships is totally different from balancing work and relationships.
Talking about balancing life and relationships, when you get into a relationship, both of you are coming from two different worlds, each bringing your goals, dreams, individual needs and combining to make one. In this situation, as time progresses in the relationship, however, one or both individuals might discover that they’ve sacrificed too many of their own personal needs in order to please the other, and in doing so, they’ve lost themselves in the process. This is sometimes avoidable:
There should be a You, Me and We;
The You and Me Part works like this, in a healthy relationship, each partner works to develop the best Self that they can be; they devote time to their individual hobbies, focus on their own personal growth and goals, and maintain friendships outside of their relationship. Creating goals for yourself and finding outside activities that bring you joy and a sense of fulfillment is vital to the health of your relationship. When couples each have a strong sense of Self, and then create the space to come together to share themselves with their partner, they enhance each other. In this case, they create a relationship in which the whole of their relationship is bigger than the individual parts.
The We part is different, do you carve out time to be with your partner? Or are you caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life? I can’t emphasize how important it is to make time for your relationship a priority. Relationships are like plants; if we don’t feed and water them, they will wilt and die. Engage in individual activities that you each and make time to connect with one another on a daily basis in meaningful ways, however brief. Being mindful of balancing your personal needs with your identity as a couple can go a long way to keeping both of you happy and connected.
Extensive research on the subject of relationships and careers shows that people in successful relationships not only make more money, they’re healthier, live longer, and get more promotions than singles do. So how can you juggle your relationship, Life and your career?
Talking about balancing work and Relationship

Prioritize:
Both your work and Relationship should be prioritized, that is do not let one fail for the other, do not have to give one up for the other. if you are at work focus on work, if you are with your significant other focus on your significant other, after all what is the fun of a promotion if you don’t have someone to share it with. Let work and your relationship have their own time........ Continue read here.... http://lagosmade.com/lifestyl/balancing-your-work-life-and-relationships/
Politics / Brace Yourselves, Some Things May Never Change Under This Change Government by ekog: 5:17pm On May 17, 2016
Change has become a dirty word in Nigeria, especially when you consider the fact that the country is under a government that vehemently preached "Change" during its last campaign. But have things really changed? A large section of Naija Twitter doesn't think so.

The tag #Somethingsnodeychange, which basically means, 'Somethings Really Don't Change' has been trending for some days now on Twitter, mostly in Nigeria, and citizens of the country have used it to highlight the unchanging nature of some the country's inherent problems. We compiled some of the most shared comments from the discussion. Check them out below:

Romance / Side Chick, Know Thy Place by ekog: 3:25pm On Apr 13, 2016
Before I start, I believe we all know who a side chic is or what it means to be one, but in case you don’t know, ‘side chicism’ dated back to the time of the Bible when Mother Sarah didn’t have a child and asked father Abraham to sleep with her maid Hagar, who later bore a child who was named Ishmael, and when the maid started to do “gra-gra” she was promptly reminded of her status as a side chic and shown the door before matter go come spoil. Well, I guess we now know the origin of side chic at least as recorded in the Bible. Good!

I know some of you ladies are thinking right now why a guy in a relationship or marriage would have a side chic; and the only thing I can say to that is, many ladies simply love to be side chics. I know there are so many ladies out there who are proud to say, married men are more romantic and responsible than single guys, and they are actually dating the married guys, thereby effectively restricting themselves to side chics’ status. Some would tell you, there are no longer single guys, so just date whoever you like and shove some other babe out of his life to become the number one. So, whichever way you look at it, there have been side chics, there are side chics, and there will always be side chics. And if you are among those reading this and saying “Over my dead body, I can’t be a side chic and my boyfriend cannot have a side chic” but your mum is the second or third wife in your family, Biko! Take several seats.

Now, let’s talk about staying in your lane as a side chic; before you start claiming some non-existent rights, and embark on some gra-gra spree. Truth is, if you’re a side chic who wants to keep up a relationship with a guy who has a main chic; then you have to know the rules of the game. You can’t expect the relationship to be more than what it is and you are not expected to worry about where the relationship is going, because the minute you start to question your status as a side chic, or ask for something more, all of the fun will go out the window. So if you want to be a good side chic, you have to stop stressing out and learn to have a good time with your man, or else you’ve gotta get out. You dig?
So, here are few things to do to help you stay in thy place and maintain thy lane.

1. Give Us Space.

You don’t have to always be the first to text or call, give some breathing room please. In short, don’t call first, if we want to get in touch with you, we’ll send you a text or call you; if you try to call or text anyhow, you could be putting us in an awkward situation because we may be with the main chic; and since we don’t plan to have more than one wife/girlfriend, it’s advisable you stay on your own job function, which is to be something different, and to be fun. You even have the right to do your own thing most times, so go out with your girlfriends, have a good time, but don’t worry about checking in with us every five minutes.

2. Don’t Ever Have “The Talk”

When you start having the “What are we doing?” “Where is this going?” “What are we now?” kind of talk, you are actually pushing us away. You have to know your lane, stay there and quit all the serious talk that only the main chic has an exclusive right to. Yeah, some side chics do somehow end up as mains, but you don’t upgrade yourself, and you don’t force it, we decide when you should be upgraded; and that is, if there is ever going to be any upgrading in the first place.

3. Go With The Flow.

There should never be a reason you should get into any disagreement or argument with us. That is the main chic’s responsibility. As a side chic, you should always be cool and should never be the one who stresses us out. You are our vacations, our time off, and our ‘go-to guy’ when the main chic is acting up. So, if you start bickering, criticizing us, or complaining about everything, there won’t be any reason to stay with you for a minute more.

TV/Movies / 10 Nigerian Books That Should Be Blockbuster Movies by ekog: 12:09pm On Apr 13, 2016
It’s always a trip when characters from a favorite novel finds reality on the silver screen. Harry Potter. The GodFather, The Notebook, No Country For Old Men, Shcindlers List. The list is endless. But what about our own African Novels? When will Nollywood realize the storied gems we have in our past and current literature and start making them into blockbuster movies? Yes, there was that Netflix adaptation of Uzo Iweala’s ‘Beasts Of No Nation’ and then Biyi Bandele’s realization of Chimamanda Adichie’s ‘Half Of A Yelow Sun. But we need more.

In Nigeria that is still struggling with it’s reading culture, wouldn’t it make more sense for some of the amazing homegrown books and stories adapted into Nollywood movies? And with At least, it’s obvious that the cinema culture is growing.

To get ahead of that conversation, we decided to put together our own wishlist. In Hollywood and some parts of the world today, quite a number of books which are best sellers (or not) have been adapted to the movie screen for movie lovers and the general populace. Movies like, Die Hard, Casino Royale, No country for old men, The God Father and Harry Porter are some of the numerous books which have been made into films.
Anyway, enough of the blabbing, here are 10 Nigerian books that should be made blockbuster Nollywood movies.

1. The Famished Road

The prize winning novel is written by Ben Okri, the book is about a spirit child (Azaro) and the real world, some people described the book as magical realism, some say its African Traditional Religion Realism, and we may as well just call it JUJU. Anyway this book makes good for an African horror movie.

2. The Last Duty

The Last Duty is a war Novel, set during the civil war, this story revolves around six main characters, Ali, Toje, Ogenehovo, Aku, Odibo, and Oshevire. This is well written fictional story written by Isidore Okpewho, probably the best war fictional novel out of Nigeria.

3. Americanah

This is a book written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, It’s a book that explores the nature of race in America and the military troubles in Nigeria. Its set not only in Lagos, but in London and, as its title implies, America. It’s both thoughtful and funny, an ideal formula for adaptations.

4. Arrow of God

A novel that completes the trilogy (Things Fall Apart, No Longer At Ease, and Arrow of God), should definitely be made a movie. If not for anything but to complete the trilogy, as the other two have been adapted already. It is a book that centers on Ezeulu, the chief priest of several Igbo villages during the colonial days, where he battled with Missionaries just to maintain the Igbo traditional religion.

Politics / 10 Shocking Fuelscarcity Photos That Will Make You Rethink Your Citizenship by ekog: 11:50am On Apr 13, 2016
One thing has been made certain for me during this #FuelScarcity period. The fact that Nigerians have the most incredible coping abilities in the whole wide world because if it wasn’t for this unique quality how can you survive the recent weeks in Nigeria?

The things that people have had to do, the lows they’ve had to stoop, the inhumanity of it all pales away when you realize its all done in aid to survive. And survival is something Nigerians are adept at. I tried to capture the harsh scenes around the country during this trying period, sometimes funny, sometimes sober, sometime downright scary.

Music/Radio / Can Show Business Redeem Nigeria’s Economy? – Rapper Poe Shares His Opinion by ekog: 10:45am On Apr 13, 2016
Nigeria’s economy is in crisis. The naira has fallen over 50% in the last year alone. Oil revenues, the mainstay of Nigeria’s foreign earnings are at their lowest in the last two decades.

On the flipside, Nigeria’s entertainment market, powered mostly by movies and music has developed by 19.3% to achieve US$4 billion value. According to PwC the entertainment business in Nigeria would have expanded with approximately US$8.1 billion by 2019. Job creation in the entertainment industry is at all-time high – Creators, Writers, Directors, Producers, PR, Bloggers etc.

However, despite major growth, the potential in show business is vastly untapped. In the bid to diversify, should the government be looking to show business as one of the saviours of the economy?

We posed this question to Nigerian rap artiste Poe and he shares his opinion on the issue in the video in the link below.

TV/Movies / ‘no Scripts Or Written Dialogue. Improv Acting Is The Best Way To Make Movies by ekog: 7:30pm On Mar 31, 2016
Hollywood Director and erstwhile actor James Omokwe thinks writing dialogue in scripts makes movies boring. Letting the actors determine for themselves what to say and how to say it during a scene makes it more believable, according to the AMVCA nominated movie director.

Scripts are good, he says, as long as it ‘guides’ the actors in the right direction, but not telling them exactly how to feel when acting. Actors do better when they’re ‘Improvising’.

Culture / 10 Things Nigerians Are Born Knowing How To Do by ekog: 12:33pm On Mar 25, 2016
1.Every Family Has a Routine Meal

Growing up in Lagos, my family had a special meal for weekends, on Saturday mornings we had Ogi and beans for breakfast, while on Sunday morning we had rice (it could be jollof, white or fried). But the little time i spent in Ibadan, i was on a 24 hours amala diet….lol. Anyway we all have that routine meal.

2. Show Off Masters

Show off is Nigeria’s middle name, from the latest clothes we buy to the designer shoes we wear, every individual wants to stand out with a touch of class. It’s inborn, we love the show off game. If i buy a new car today the people must know even when i buy a multi-million Naira bag, my brother you will not ear word oh!

3. We Are Religious People

Nigerians are holier than thou, if you like believe, if u like don’t believe. The number of Nigerians that go to church on Sundays and visit the mosque on fridays are almost uncountable. Truly the issue of corruption is still a mystery nobody seems to have solved. We are quick to rebuke everything bad in the name of God and quick to say prayers to the most high for a better tomorrow, even when we don’t work for it.

4. Nigerians Have Major Trust Issues

Everyone’s a suspect. As a Nigerian every nice stranger that comes into your life has an ulterior motive, he/she has to be up to something. I mean u can’t just be nice like that you must be up to something. As a matter of fact in the mind of a Nigerian, no government has the best interest of its citizens at heart.
