Politics / Nigeria's Military Destroys Niger Delta by ekunokoibo: 8:16am On Aug 17, 2013
The Nigerian government's military crackdown against the theft of crude in the Niger River delta has left more than a 1,000 makeshift refineries in flames, worsening pollution in the area, authorities say.
A military taskforce deployed last year to stop theft and protect facilities in Africa's top oil producer has destroyed 1,819 makeshift refineries, set ablaze 861 boats carrying as much as 20,000 liters (5,277 gallons) each of illegally refined crude and 51 tanker trucks, force commander Major General Bata Debiro said Thursday at a conference on crude theft in Lagos.
The military's actions also contributed to pollution in the delta, Nigerian Maritime Safety Agency Director-General Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi told the meeting.
"Security operatives blowing up things is causing more pollution," he said.
Security forces have been struggling to halt oil theft in the country. Authorities say more than 400,000 barrels of oil are stolen every day. Nigeria pumped about 1.9 million barrels a daylast month, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Debiro's 6,102 soldiers and police are operating in a 70,000 square-kilometer (27,027 square-mile) region of land, mangroves and creeks that is filled with pipelines. That area is bigger than the U.S. state of West Virginia.http://m.naij.com/news/43965.html

Disclosing this development during a stakeholder meeting at the conference room of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Regional Manager, South, West, FederalAirport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. EdwardOlarerin said that the need to relocate the drivers became mandatory due to the dangers the present location poses to the airport community.http://m.naij.com/news/44022.html
Politics / nigeria cannot disintegrate says ibb at 72 by ekunokoibo: 12:43am On Aug 17, 2013
CONTRARY to insinuations in some quarters of the possible disintegration of the country in 2015, former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has said there is nothing in the horizon to suggest Nigeria will go into extinction.
Speaking during an interactive session with newsmen, the former leader who turned 72 today stated that the current political challenges facing the country are not enough for Nigeria to disintegrate.
“Forget about the country disintegrating in 2015, I cannot see it happening. Nations don’t just go into disintegration. Two, three years before that, the signs would have beenthere; the signs would have been ominous. Certainly there are no such signs today and those talking about disintegration are people I think do not know Nigeria,” he said.
The former head of state, who expressed reservation over the happenings in the political scene, stressed that, “my findings have not indicated any serious threat to the corporate existence of the country in 2015.”
He added: “A country that is about to disintegrate does not happen overnight. From the prevailing circumstances on the ground, there is no imminent danger to the continued existence of the country as one indivisible entity.
“I know it will not happen, although people say all sorts of things simply to cause fears and panic among Nigerians”
According to Babangida, Nigeria is one of the most amazing countries in the world. “When you are outside the country, you will think the country is about to collapse only for you to return and see people smiling andlaughing.”
He reiterated his earlier position never to seek elective office again and declared that he would continue to play a stabilising role in the politics of Nigeria
He said the kind of leaders Nigeria need noware those that believe in the unity of the country and promotes peace and stability of Nigeria.
“I will continue to contribute towards stabilising the nation and not seeking for any political office. We should do everything possible to believe in the country.”
He refused to share the view of former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the younger generation of leaders in the countryhas failed Nigerians, pointing out that some of the young leaders are really doing well without mentioning names.
He, however, said that Obasanjo may have made the remark because a lot is expected from the younger generation of leaders in the country, adding: “Our expectation about the younger generation is very high but there are some other young men that have equally done well; they are not doing badly.”
Babangida acknowledged the efforts being put in by Obasanjo for the peace of the nation, saying that Obasanjo is one of the people in the country who believe in the unity of Nigeriahttp://www.ngrguardiannews.com/national-news/130206--ASUU-will-wait-until-fg-gets-money-says-ex-chairman
Sports / Blessing Okagbare Wins Bronze In 200m Women's Final by ekunokoibo: 12:35am On Aug 17, 2013
IT was another moment of joy for Team Nigeria Friday when Blessing Okagbare raced to another medal, this time a bronze, in the 200m women final.
She narrowly missed the silver medal to her fellow African, Ivorian Murielle Ahoure. The duo ran 22.32 seconds, but the Ivorian was credited with the silver for dipping on the finishing line.
Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who led the pack from the start to the finish, won thegold medal. She ran 22.17 seconds to add the 200m gold to her kitty, having won the 100m gold earlier in the week. America’s Allyson Felix got injured midway and could not finish the race Friday.
For Okagbare, it was a sweet victory despite finishing third. She entered the history books as the first Nigerian to win two medals in a particular IAAF World Championship. Her silver medal in the long jump event last Sunday broke Nigeria’s 14-year jinx of long wait for medal in the championship.
Before Okagbare’s bronze in the 200m Friday, the women 4x400 relay team began the day on an exciting note for Team Nigeria.
The quartet, which included Regina George, ran a great race by coming from behind to finish second with a season’s best time of three minutes, 27.39 seconds in their heat.
The girls qualified for today’s final behind Team Great Britain, which won the heat in three minutes, 25.29 seconds. France finished third in that race.
In today’s final of the women 4x400m, TeamNigeria will battle it out with USA, Italy, Great Britain, France, Ukraine, Romania and the host country, Russia.
In what looks like a total failure from Nigeria’s male competitors in the Moscow 2013 World Championship, London-based Tosin Oke failed to show up for the triple jump event yesterday. The country’s only hope in the men’s 100m race, Ogho-Oghene Egwero fell by the way side in round one of the sprint event earlier in the week.
One major highpoint in Friday’s event was the victory by Somalia-born Mohamed Farah in the 5000m for Team Great Britain. As he did in the 10000m, Farah beat a pack of Ethiopia and Kenyans to win yesterday’s event in a time of 13 minutes, 26.98 seconds.
The United States of America won the men’s 4x400 metres relay yesterday, with Jamaica and Russia picking the silver and bronze medalshttp://www.ngrguardiannews.com/home/130214-okagbare-grabs-another-medal-for-nigeria-in-moscow

Politics / Al Mustapha-will Appeal Tear Apc Apart by ekunokoibo: 12:28am On Aug 17, 2013
By AbdulSalam Muhammad

Could the decision by the Lagos State government to appeal the Court of Appeal judgement that freed Major Hamza Al-Mustapha from jail consume the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The question comes to fore given the fact that Lagos State, where the former Chief Security Officer to former military head of state, Gen. Sani Abacha, was tried is under the sway of the APC. So is Kano State, Al-Mustapha’s home base, and also, Yobe State, his state of origin.
Given the common political currency dominating in the three states, the issue of an appeal of a sensitive matter as concerning the former security officer is bound to raise issues.
And so thinks Alhaji Ibrahim Babankowa, a Kano based elder-statesman and former commissioner of police who is credited with discovering the body of Nigeria’s erstwhile prime minister, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa followingthe first coup in the country in 1966.
Briefing newsmen in his residence Wednesdayafternoon, the former security agent explainedthat “the steps taken by the Lagos state Government also have the capacity to rekindle distrust between the Hausa/Fulani extraction on one side and the Yorubas on the other”.
Alhaji Shofolahan, Late Alhaja Kudirat Abiola and Major Hamazat Al-Mustapha
Lagos state Government Tuesday announced ithas filed a notice of appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the acquittal of Al Mustapha and others freed by the court of appeal over the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, wife of thepresumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, late Moshood KashimawoOlawale Abiola.
Alhaji Babankowa who is a close confidant of one of the APC national leaders, General Muhammadu Buhari noted that “the way and manner the north received this serving militaryofficer on his home coming and the caliber of highly placed individuals that received him in audience was instructive that the region and the silent majority are solidly sympathetic to him”.
The former Commissioner of police stressed “from what I have seen so far I have no doubt in my mind that this current step would harm the relationship across borders against the backdrop of interpretation and understandingof a layman who are simply in the majority here”.
Babankowa though admitted that the decisionof the Lagos State Government to go for an appeal at the Supreme Court might not be unconnected to the desire to satisfy the Abiola family.
“I have seen the case file and the ground of appeal by the Lagos State Government, it would be safe to say that they are trying to exhaust all legal means to satisfy the Abiola family in particular and the Yoruba race in general, but the danger inherent in such judicial expedition is the risk of relationship with our people”, Babankowa saidhttp://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/al-mustapha-will-appeal-tear-apc-apart/
