RESHARPENED: Concerning Bitcoin
Some months ago, I withdrew proceeds from a domain sales on Dan.com via BTC. Before it arrived in my wallet, BTC already appreciated. So much, in fact, that the value of BTC that landed in my wallet was greater than the gross value of the domain sold.
With this taste of the exponential increase in BTC value over a short time, I was hooked. I decided I was going to diversify my investment portfolio and delve into Bitcoin.
Without wasting time, I invested a percentage of my profit from subsequent domain sales in BTC via LUNO. The transaction was smooth.
To monitor my portfolio, I set an alert for when BTC goes below #3.150M and when it goes above #3.2M. At the time of purchase, Bitcoin was around #3.170M.
With that amateur system in place, I noticed two things:
1. I received way more alerts of BTC going below #3.150M than beyond #3.2M. In other words, BTC has a tendency to drop significantly in value than increase.
2. LUNO seems to have a slightly lower value of BTC quoted on its platform compared to other platforms.
Despite my observations, I wasn't bothered in the least. After all, I was in for the Long haul and my people believe that "a patient man would eventually cook stones to an edible consistency." So I was determined to make a meal of the stone called Bitcoin and I remained undeterred.
The past couple of days, however, have made it glaring that "BITCOIN IS NOT AN IDEAL STORE OF VALUE." Over 50% drop in value. And all that percentage decrease within a matter of days. Right now, I can't even muster the fortitude to check the value of my BTC portfolio.
My conclusion is that Bitcoin is a wonderful means of receiving payments but makes for a lousy investment. I will retain my BTC holding long enough for it to return to its original value at the time of my investment, then it's Au revoire, la Bitcoin.
So, guys, what do you suggest as an alternative investment that guarantees capital safety and appreciation? I'm no expert by any means but why not double down on what you already know - domain investing? |

1Dray: Maybe because you didn't submit with SH coin. Names submitted with SH coins are charged 30% or less. I submitted with coin. They showed 35% commision for the last 2 domains of mine that were accepted. |

Abeg what will make SH charge 35% commission on a domain? Is it that the domain is bad or there are high hopes of it being sold? they charged 30% for the others i've been submitting. |

terrymason: Is it advisable to register a org name extension that the net, co, com, info has already be taken? Nikul Sanghvi said: ↑ Ledger dot org ... $30k Inbound email via hypernames.co Bought on Sedo for $6k on 16/11/17 (seller began an auction using my counter-offer, but no other bids) --- 22nd Nov: I got the domain into my account and set up a landing page on hypernames.co - with an asking price of $45k. Had a couple of inquiries within the first few days, but nothing serious. 28th Nov: I had a five-figure inbound offer (via a broker). I countered at $30k, which was accepted. The Escrow transaction recently completed, and the buyer was revealed as a well known crypto brand, manufacturing hardware wallets. It's a great fit for them, so I'm surprised they didn't bid against me when the domain was on auction. My guess is that it was flagged to them after my purchase price was published on Namebio. Could have pushed harder but the returns are satisfactory in relation to the timeframe (six days). --- Sharing my research process (for pre-purchase rationalisation) with everyone here: - I downloaded the ICOTracker database from Coindesk to analyse the use of different TLDs and keywords within the crypto space (which gave me confidence to risk the .org extension) - Manually scraped LinkedIn, Twitter and Crunchbase to reference the use of the term 'ledger' and 'distributed ledger' in company names and descriptions - Used a keyword tool for search data and SERP ranking difficulty for those same terms - Manual parse through Google using 'site: ledger' for existing domains that contain the word ledger - Namebio, DnJournal and Namepros for seeing the crypto niche trending for domain sales. - Usual searches to see what's happening on www.ledger.* (about 25 other extentions) - A few days of deep reading, using CTRL+F to keep an eye out for the word (50+ articles across BBC, FT, Medium, Wired, Coindesk, Blockgeeks, etc) My counterpoints for arguments against the investment (or for limiting the investment) mapped out as: - Namebio data for .org sales (within the last year), showed low probability of selling above $15k. - I had no experience of ever buying and selling .org beforehand. My early expectation was to hold the domain for at least a few years. - The term ledger exists as a trademark within publishing - theledger//com (ledger media group), patriotledger//com, etc - I was actually nervous that the company called Ledger was already using ledgerwallet//com. They also own ledger//fr and ledger//co. At the time, I saw this negatively as a potential UDRP threat and not as opportunity. - Google Trends showed no significant uplift patterns for the search term over either the last 12 months or five years - Although SERP difficulty was 59/100, KWFinder showed that PPC competition and resulting CPC were both very low. Final profits also took a small hit because I hand-regged around 100 other related .COM and .CO domains throughout the above process. Would love to claim some special intuition or foresight - but the truth is that I did a little bit of homework, took the chance and somehow got incredibly lucky on timing! Congrats to the buyer and a big thank you to the broker - not sure if I'm allowed to name them but they were super professional. |

Thanks. Make it 3k man. Doesn't hurt to try and make more cash. Edit: Make it 5k, if the buyer doesn't have 5k, he/she can contact you via mail with their best offer. |

codemaniacs: you can't submit unregisitered domains with SH coins, at least on my screen there is no "You would need 1 Squadhelp Coin to submit the domain" on the "SUBMIT AN UNREGISTERED DOMAIN" button.
but there is "You would need 1 Squadhelp Coin to submit the domain" on the "SUBMIT A DOMAIN YOU OWN" button. You can submit an UNREGISTERED domain with SH coin. You have probably submitted some and they are reviewing them. |

therealMcCain: When there is a story behind a sale, there are things I learn. but telling me Gwarimpacarpetcleaning sold for x amount, hold time 5days does me no good. I dont come here for such sales report. I come here for the Q & A.
This is your model to learn from sales to be able to come up with names. it works for you, stick to it. I dont subscribe to it, I learn from news articles, comments on forums etc Pls go to Namebio, Its a robust database of sold domain name by niche, category, tld, date, year etc it will help you alot since sales report motivates you.
For Newbies: Define your objective, what do you want out of this business? The answer to this will determine how you go about it and save you from frustration.
I made a decision mid last year, not to register Geo names again and not to renew them when they expire.(I renewed just one). I didnt like the time i was putting into getting enduser contacts and time to send outbound mails. it was serious work for me. So i resolved to stick to brandable and list them on SH,BB,BP thereby relying on their marketing strategy to do all the work for me.
I am ok if the names dont sell or if it takes 3years to sell. My brandables will be renewed for 2-3yrs, then i will drop it if it doesnt sell, for names i acquire for $250 above, hold time will be for 5yrs, before I allow it drop. This was my resolution and i have stuck with it.
To reduce my Renewal Fees, I decided to focus on SH owned names by submitting unregistered names, I get a lower commission if the name sells but I dont have any business with renewal for 3yrs. I am also very ok with this.
I have also made a decision to stop handreg, Now i want to focus on Reseller market on Namepros, BB slack channel and GD closeout. I cant compete with the white folks on GD auctions for now.
This doesnt mean that I wont change or make modifications to the above plans but it shows I have a clear cut objective, so there are so many things that will never apply to me or that I will bother myself about. are you stopping handreg because of the time involved in finding good names too? |
