Northern Leaders Responsible For Insecurity In North – Matawalle Zamfara State Governor, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, on Sunday, said northern leaders are responsible for the insecurity ravaging the region. Matawalle made the observation while delivering a paper titled “The Fight Against Banditry in Northwest Nigeria: Challenges and Solutions” at the inauguration of the new executives of Arewa Media Writers Association in Kaduna. He said the northern leaders were responsible for the plight of their region, which includes horrible crimes like rape, killings of women and children, kidnapping, highway robbery and other gruesome atrocities in the northern region. According to him, the north lacked responsible leadership to steer it through the uncharted waters, adding that the ruling elites have no vision for the region beyond gaining political power. The governor said when he took over as governor on May 29th, 2019, the State had already been mired in a serious security crisis for over a decade, marked by banditry, livestock rustling, kidnapping among other crimes. He said the State was in the news for bloodletting, fire, pillage, and significant displacement of people, particularly those living in rural areas, on daily basis. Matawalle, represented by the State’s Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Magaji, said the historic, economic, social and cultural ties between the dominant communities of Fulani and Hausa were ruptured; farming activities across the State halted, and commercial activities crippled. He said: “With poverty on the increase and food security seriously affected by the crisis, the State was on the verge of a catastrophic social eruption capable of destabilizing our communities and the northwest sub-region. “Shinkafi and Zurmi LGAs are the hot spot of banditry even though there is no mining activities going there. “Rural banditry in Zamfara and other parts of the north, in my opinion, is a result of the progressive degradation of our moral standards and a culture of greed fed by an unfettered need for material goods. As shown in this presentation, the culture of cattle raiding by pastoralist groups is not something new. It was practiced in the days gone by to demonstrate courage and bravery, and no violence was used.” He said the major challenges to peace efforts in the region included reluctance by the affected states to embrace peace dialogue, which would have deprived the recalcitrant bandits currently tormenting the people of safe corridors across the region. Lack of support He lamented that there was a lack of support from a section of politicians who wish to take advantage of the situation to achieve political gains, noting that there was a need for the federal government to key into the peace initiative so that appropriate resources can be allocated to achieved that. He added, “We have all seen how the elites in the South-East and Southwest responded in unison to all matters concerning their regions’ development. We have seen how they have a defined agenda and are relentless in their pursuit of regional development.” According to him, the war against banditry in the North West would remain a significant security challenge that has the potential to swallow the region and the country. He appealed to leaders of the region to wake up from their lethargy and unite in combating the grave challenge, saying there was the need to stop politicising the situation. https://dailytrust.com/northern-leaders-responsible-for-insecurity-in-north-matawalle

No aircraft is safe – Reno Omokri reacts to shooting down of NAF jetPublished on July 25, Reno Omokri, former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has expressed worries that bandits terrorizing many parts of the country may resort to attacking commercial aircrafts. Omokri stated this on Sunday while reacting to the recent military plane crash which occured on Saturday last week in Zamfara State, Northwest. Recall that a Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet was shot down by bandits. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, was rescued. Reacting to the development, Omokri said if the criminal elements can possess “surface to air missiles that can bring down a military jet”, even commercial aircraft may not be safe. The socio-political activist made the remark in a post on his official Facebook page. The post reads, “The cavalier manner the Buhari regime is taking the downing of an airforce jet by bandits does not augur well for Nigeria’s national security. If bandits now possess surface to air missiles that can bring down a military jet, then how safe is civilian aviation in Nigeria? “I urge General Buhari to snap out of his Igboho fixation and acknowledge the reality that no plane flying over Nigeria is safe. The jet that was shot down is an Alpha Jet and costs close to $1 million. It flies at 50,000 feet above ground. If bandits can shoot it down, they can shoot any jet in Nigeria down, military or civilian. “Nigerians are going to see a dramatic rise in costs of tickets for both international and domestic flights, because flights are going to reduce as a result of this incident. And those flights that continue to operate will be forced to take out very high hazard insurance premiums. “While these bandits may be from a particular ethnic group, they are not necessarily from Nigeria. Many of them are disaffected Fulani from Mali where they have been fighting the government there. They are rugged and war hardened. They can bring Nigeria to her knees if we continue ignoring them. “And we must note that the plane that was shot down was shot down at night. These guys are trigger happy and according to reports in the media, they also use drugs. What if a commercial plane flies over their hideout at night. Are they not paranoid enough to shoot it down thinking it is a military jet?” https://dailypost.ng/2021/07/25/no-aircraft-is-safe-reno-omokri-reacts-to-shooting-down-of-naf-jet/

Only best students from North used to get admission into federal schools: Lai Mohammed Mr Mohammed Mr Mohammed stressed that in his time, only the very best from the 13 Provinces in the North made it to the college and not by any other consideration. Information and culture minister Lai Mohammed has recalled how academic prowess, rather than religion or ethnicity, served as the criterion for admission into federal unity schools during his days as a student. Mr Mohammed made the comments on Saturday in Abuja at a book presentation and 75th birthday celebration of Dr Bamigboye Ogunbiyi. Mr Ogunbiyi is a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist from Ilofa, Kwara State who married retired Supreme Court justice Clara Ogunbiyi, who hails from Borno. Messrs Ogunbiyi and Mohammed are both Alumni of Federal Government College, Keffi, though the former is the senior. “From the book, we learnt that the celebrant attended Federal Government College (FGC), Keffi and that is why I am not surprised he ended up marrying Justice Clara from Borno. “In Keffi, we were taught at a very young age that this country is one and the same and that religion, ethnicity and social status do not matter but rather one’s academic prowess,’’ he said. Mr Mohammed stressed that in his time, only the very best from the 13 Provinces in the North made it to the college and not by any other consideration. Unlike Mr Mohammed’s acclaimed experience, admission criteria for federal unity schools have been varied to favour weak students in the North. Admission criteria, nowadays, are often lowered for northern candidates “to encourage northern students to embrace education.” While the cut off mark for students who sought admission into federal schools in the 2020/2021 was put at an average of 140 points, some students from students in certain northern states were admitted with a cut off of as low as 4 points. Speaking on the inter-tribal marriage of the celebrant, the minister said the foundation for national unity had been built a long time ago by the nation’s forefathers and what the people needed to do was to sustain it. Mr Mohammed however noted that some elements in the country were exacerbating ethnic and religious differences to tear the country apart for their selfish reasons. The minister said the things that unite the country were more and significant than those things that the divisive elements were escalating for disunity. He implored Nigerians to emulate and revive the ‘Keffi spirit de-emphasising ethnicity, religion and social status and co-exist as Nigerians.’’ Mr Mohammed noted that the school was a leveller where children of peasants mixed freely with the children of the rich, adding that Christian students fasted along with those of them who were Muslims during the Ramadan. https://gazettengr.com/only-best-students-from-north-used-to-get-admission-into-federal-schools-lai-mohammed/?utm_source=ReviveOldPost&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ReviveOldPost

We are ‘not aware’ of Buhari’s tweet deleted by Twitter – FG The respondents maintained that despite the ban on Twitter, Nigerians have continued to use the site every day. The Nigerian government has said it was not aware of the controversial tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari last month that was deleted by the microblogging site. In a counter-affidavit filed before the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court in response to a suit instituted by a human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the federal government said they were unaware of the tweet. Joined as first to third respondents in the suit are the AGF, the Minister of Information, and the Federal Government. “The first and third respondents are not aware of any tweet purportedly emanating from President Muhammadu Buhari which Twitter investigated and found that it violated Twitter rules and that Twitter did not consider it proper to inform the third respondent of such,” read the counter-affidavit deposed to by Ilop Lawrence, a litigant at the Federal Ministry of Justice on behalf of the AGF and FG. In the wake of the rampant insecurity in the south-eastern part of the country, the president had responded by tweeting that “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.” Two days after Twitter deleted Mr Buhari’s post, the Nigerian government announced it had banned the microblogging site for allegedly promoting insurrection in the country. “The mission of Twitter in Nigeria is very very suspect,” Information Minister Lai Mohammed said in a statement. “Has Twitter deleted the violent tweets that Nnamdi Kanu has been sending? Has it? The same Twitter during the ENDSARS protests that was funding ENDSARS protesters, it was the first to close the account of former president of US, Trump. In its counter-affidavit before the court, the Nigerian government argued that “Twitter had become a platform of choice for a particular separatist promoter who constantly use the platform to direct his loyalists to kill Nigerian soldiers and policemen, run down government structures and destroy all symbols of Nigeria’s sovereignty.” “Every attempt by the defendant to persuade Twitter to deny its platform to this separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and was not (sic) taken seriously.” The government also said the violence that erupted during last year’s #EndSARS protests was sponsored by Twitter and its founder, Jack Dorsey. The respondents maintained that despite the ban on Twitter, Nigerians have continued to use the site every day. They added that they would not continue to suspend the use of the microblogging site in the Nigerian cyberspace once Twitter is able to and has complied with Nigerian laws as required for it to inter alia to be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/475362-we-are-not-aware-of-buharis-tweet-deleted-by-twitter-fg.html

Unemployment rate under Buhari worst in Nigeria’s history: World Bank The World Bank said unemployment rate particularly rose acutely since the 2015-2016 economic recession. Anew World Bank report has indicated that the unemployment rate in Nigeria has risen more than ever in the history of the country under the Buhari led administration. For a nation, unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of the labour force population who could not find at least 20 hours of work in the reference period. The report says the rate was significantly higher for Nigerian youth (42.5 per cent) compared to non-youth (26.3 per cent). The current rate of unemployment in Nigeria has risen five fold from 6.4 per cent in 2010, hitting 33.3 percent as of the last quarter of 2020, per National Bureau of Statistics’ report. The Washington based organisation said the unemployment rates which started rising sharply in 2015, when President Muhammadu Buhari assumed power, has been worsened by COVID-19, leading the country into recession. “The rise in unemployment rates has been particularly acute since the 2015- 2016 economic recession and has further worsened as COVID-19 led to the worst recession in four decades in 2020” the paper read in part The report which was published in collaboration with Rapid Social Response trust fund (RSR) and Korea World Bank Partnership Facility ( KWPF) puts the rate of employed male in Nigeria at 46.4 per cent while that of women stood at 40.6 per cent. The World Bank opined that the growing numbers of Nigerian citizens seeking asylum in other countries is as a result of economic issues faced in Nigeria. It states that from 1990 to 2019, migrants from Nigeria has risen from 446, 806 to 1,438, 331. A World Bank projection in March, 2021 had predicted that no fewer than 20 million Nigerians would have plunged into poverty before Mr Buhari leaves office. In a report in June, the World Bank warned that Nigeria’s 10 years economic gains could be reversed under the Buhari regime. Though Mr Buhari claims his regime has lifted 10 million Nigerians out of poverty, the World Bank maintains that seven million Nigerians became poor under Buhari in 2020. Mr Buhari in an interview with Arise TV crew in July blamed youths for worsening rate of unemployment. He asked the youths to be of good behaviour so that foreign investors can come into the country. “Nobody is going to invest in an insecure environment. So I told them [his ministers], I said they should tell the youth that if they want jobs, they will behave themselves,” Mr Buhari said. https://gazettengr.com/unemployment-rate-under-buhari-worst-in-nigerias-history-world-bank/?utm_source=ReviveOldPost&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ReviveOldPost
