Islamic group blasts Akwa Ibom govt for fixing exams on Salah dayPublished on July 20, 2021By John Akinfehinwa

Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has said that the Akwa Ibom State Government has proved that it was not ready to accommodate and coexist with people of other religions in the country by insisting on continuing examinations on a Salah day.

The Ministry of Education in Akwa Ibom State had announced that students in the state will continue with the ongoing graduation examinations for schools.

The State government said the SSII promotion examinations will go on today in spite of the public holiday declared by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

However, MURIC condemned the government’s decision, describing it as Bohemian, arrogant, insensitive and intolerant.

In a statement signed by Prof. Ishaq Akintola, its director and founder, MURIC said it was shocked by the action of the Ben Ayade-led government.

“We are shocked to our marrows at the level of acrobatic religiousity which some state governments are manifesting towards Muslims.

“The government of Akwa Ibom State is fully aware that there is a remarkable percentage of Muslim population made up of both indigenes and non-indigenes in the state. The children of these Muslims are in Akwa Ibom schools,” the group’s statement said

“The fact that the state’s Ministry of Education ignored these people and insisted on continuing examinations on Salah days prove that it is not prepared to coexist with any other religion.

“MURIC also sees it as impunity of the highest order for Akwa Ibom to ignore Federal Government declaration public holidays and to insist on holding examinations. This is Bohemian, arrogant, insensitive and intolerant,” it added.

MURIC wondered what the reactions and comments will be if a core Northern state should do something similar on Christmas day.

Politics › It’s Unfair To Stop Nnamdi Kanu, Igboho While Armed Herders Are Not Checked – Or by Emergingnation(op): 10:34am On Jul 20, 2021
It’s unfair to stop Nnamdi Kanu, Igboho while armed herders are not checked – Ortom

As herders abduct, kill 2 aid workers, Ortom’s relation, 5 others in Benue

…Invaders send message, vow to continue killings until Benue repeals grazing law

Ortom condemns attack on his home town

By Peter Duru

Eight persons including two aide workers and a relation of Governor Samuel Ortom were, Sunday, reportedly killed during a raid on Nzorov and Uvir council wards of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected herdsmen.

Vanguard gathered that the deceased aid workers attached to the 360 Health Systems Diagnostics and Correction, 360HSDC, a Non-Governmental Organisation, NGO, working on HIV/AIDS testing and counselling in the state were earlier abducted by the herders before they were killed.

The workers, according to the source, were said to be on their routine assignment when they were captured by their abductors at Tomanyiin village.

The source disclosed that a call, which was put to the phone of one of the workers, after the news of their capture circulated in the community, was picked by one of the herders, who confirmed their kidnap and killing.

It was gathered that the bandit said such incident will continue in the state until Governor Samuel Ortom responded to their demand to repeal the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches law of the state enacted in 2017.

Contacted, Chairman of Guma Local Government Area, Mr Caleb Aba, who confirmed the killings, said: “Four of the victims were killed in Mbabai village, Sunday evening, including the two aide workers.

“Three others were killed in Nzorov, Governor Ortom’s hometown, and one other in Uvir council ward, all in Guma Local Government Area.

The chairman, who lamented the latest killings, said: “Before now, we had no quarrel with the herders, who came in from neighbouring Nasarawa State to kill our people.”

It's unfortunate —Ortom

Reacting, Governor  Ortom, who also confirmed the attack, said his relation, an undergraduate of Benue State University, was among the eight victims.

He said: “He was a 200-Level student of Benue State University. He was killed by the Fulani militia, including two humanitarian aid workers and the others.

“It is unfortunate, and they even had the guts to send words to the person who called the phone of one of the workers that they should tell me that I should repeal the open grazing prohibition law otherwise they will continue with the killings.

“That is the kind of impunity we are talking about. That is the injustice and unfairness we are talking about in this country and the evil being perpetrated by these people.

“We will continue to cry out to the outside world to see the genocide that is going on here in Benue State and other parts of Nigeria.

“I heard somebody made an unfortunate statement that said the Fulani bandits are like spirits so they cannot be seen. That is why they can arrest Nnamdi Kanu and displace Sunday Igboho but herdsmen cannot be arrested.

“These are people, who are romancing government officials, yet killing people, taking our children hostage, raping our children in schools and our women yet nothing is being done because they are like spirits.

“We see this militia, who come out on videos claiming that they were hired by the government and yet somebody is saying that they cannot be seen. We know that Gumi can go to the forests to see them, come back and negotiate ransom; and somebody is saying that they are like spirits.

“The day that President Buhari wants these killings to stop, they will stop. But for now, I think that this is what they want and it is not strange to me because they have said it before.

“They want to take over the country, but some of us will fight that with the last pint of our blood, that I can assure you. We cannot keep quiet in the face of injustice. If you want us to keep quiet, you must also give us justice, then we can keep quiet.”

Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, who confirmed the attack said the command had received information about three deaths in the attack.

EXCLUSIVE: Bandits’ Leader, Turji, Releases Zamfara Villagers, Reunites With Father
Daily Trust had, on Saturday, exclusively reported the mass abduction by Turji which occurred some two weeks after the arrest of his father...

A leader of bandits in Zamfara State, Turji, has released villagers and travellers abducted by his men over the weekend, in a rampage to draw attention to his father’s arrest by security forces.

Daily Trust had, on Saturday, exclusively reported the mass abduction by Turji which occurred some two weeks after the arrest of his father in Kazaure, Jigawa State.

The father was said to have relocated to Jigawa State after he failed to dissuade his son from his criminal ways.

He was arrested following a tip-off by an informant from a rival gang who told security forces that the father was trading in cattle stolen by the son’s gang.

In attacks on villagers such as Kware, Kurya, Badarawa, Keta and Maberaya, gunmen abducted many residents and rustled a number of cattle.

Informed sources told Daily Trust that Turji also received his father from mediators on Sunday afternoon.

A source told Daily Trust that Turji agreed to release the abductees as part of a wider mediation process initiated by the federal government as an alternative resolution strategy to tackle rural banditry.

“He released the villagers unconditionally because of the pleas by mediators who are bringing key bandits to the table with the government,” a security source who is part of the new process, said.

In an audio clip obtained by Daily Trust, on Sunday, Turji was heard promising to release all the people and animals taken by his men once his father was brought back to him.

“Let them give you my father. Once you brought him to Bayan Ruwa, I assure you every one of the abductees and all the animals in my custody will be released,” he told the caller who is a prominent community leader in Shinkafi.

Politics › Report: DSS Arrests Three Israeli Filmmakers Over Alleged Link To IPOB by Emergingnation(op): 3:19pm On Jul 18, 2021
Report: DSS arrests three Israeli filmmakers over alleged link to IPOB

Three Israeli filmmakers were allegedly arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) for alleged link to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Israelis, Rudy Rochman, a Zionist activist; Noam Leibman, filmmaker, and David Benaym, French-Israeli journalist, were reportedly arrested on July 9 when they visited Ogidi village, Idemili North LGA of Anambra state.

The foreigners were said to have taken off from Ben Gurion Airport, Israel, on July 5 and arrived in Nigeria the following day to film a documentary titled, ‘We Were Never Lost’.

The documentary seeks to explore Jewish communities in African countries such as Kenya, Madagascar, Uganda, and Nigeria.

According to Times of Israel, the arrested persons have not been charged by Nigerian authorities and are without legal representation.

The newspaper said the filmmakers were arrested on suspicion that they had come in contact with Biafran separatists.

The families of the three Israelis were also quoted in a statement as saying local political elements twisted the gifting of a Torah scroll to a local community as constituting support for separatist political ambitions.

In their statement on Wednesday, the families said the filmmakers brought gifts for the communities hosting them but that the gifts were misinterpreted as support for IPOB activities.

“The filmmaking crew thought it would be a nice gesture to bring several gifts with cultural symbolism to the communities it planned to visit,” the statement reads.

“Unfortunately, members of non-state political groups have hijacked for their own purposes images of the filmmakers gifting a Torah to a local community.

“These individuals are distorting the intentions of the filmmakers in an effort to manufacture a connection to local political matters when no such connection exists.

“These politically motivated actors have taken a simple gesture of kindness and twisted it in an attempt to create an alternate meaning.”

The families said the documentary series “are designed to educate viewers about the religious and cultural experiences of lesser-known Jewish communities”.

They added that the goal of the filmmakers is “to interview members of Jewish communities across multiple African countries, along with Jewish communities in China, India, Afghanistan and elsewhere”.

“This documentary is not intended to make any political statements about the countries in which filming will take place, nor does the filmmaking team endorse any political movements. The filmmaking crew acts as a guest visiting the country and its various communities – there are no political overtones,” they said.

“We are working diligently with the US, Israeli and French embassies on the matter, and we greatly appreciate the attention they have given to the situation. Their involvement has helped to improve the conditions of the filmmakers while in custody – including the delivery of kosher meals prepared by the local Chabad.

“We hope that the DSS will quickly conclude what the facts support – that the filmmaking team has no political motives and that the team should be released from custody as soon as possible.”

This development comes amid the arrest and detention of Nnamdi Kanu, founder of IPOB, who is said to have claimed in 2018 that “he owed his survival to the Jewish state”.
