Music/Radio / Meet Harteez, A Rising Afrobeats Star by EmmanuelDaralo: 2:28pm On Apr 14, 2023
“Attention everybody,” this catchphrase welcomes you to the Instagram handle of Harteez and to most of his songs. The Nigerian singer who just released a dazzling new extended play “Signature,” EP. With close to a decade in the music industry, the youngster has experienced the swinging pedals of life. These various experiences formed a large chunk of the content of music.

Harteez is street, Street is Harteez. While at this, the Kogi State born singer has been able to carry along the people who don't have any connection with the streets.

With collaborations with the likes of Idowest, Seyi Vibez, Zinoleesky, to mention just a few, Harteez still makes sure that he shows the fans the mettle that he's made off on all this song.

“Scripture,” EP is an animated, crude attempt at telling stories. No doubt, Harteez knows what's at stake. On this sonic voyage, he calls on Martinsfeelz, Moscow Peller, Mohbad, Otega and Bella Shmurda. They all brought their arsenal to fore, Harteez, also came through with his impeccable cadence.

With close to twenty thousand monthly listeners on Spotify and about ninety nine thousand followers on Instagram, Harteez is slowly gathering all the attention he wants. The streets are listening, likewise the world.

Music/Radio / Meet Ifeoluwa Akinfolarin, The Next Gospel Music Superstar by EmmanuelDaralo: 8:35am On Aug 16, 2022
By Emmanuel Daraloye

Music runs in the family of Miss Akinfolarin Ifeolouwa, my brother who happens to have mastered the art of drumming sent me the link to two of her songs two weeks ago. I was hooked on the first I song I streamed. Titled “Mo Duro," (Wait), Iyanya's “Kukere," might have served as inspiration in the opening seconds; the production took on a life of its own later on. It's a boisterous melange of guitar strings, piano chop, and talking drums. While she attributed the inspiration of the song to God, she was quick to add that it was also based on her personal life experiences.

Nigerians are known for their tenacity, so, I could understand Ifeoluwa's state of mind when she tells me “she was ambitious, driven, principled and doesn't like to be idle.” For anyone eager for success, these ingredients are veritable tools.

The church has been responsible for the development of artistes in Nigeria. Ifeoluwa joins that expanding list. According to her, her singing skill was noticed while she was in the choir “I am only enjoying God's Grace, though it's been from childhood as a little girl in the choir who always caught the attention of people while singing”. With two singles and numerous unreleased songs under her belt, she hopes to take singing to the next level with the help of God.

While comments and encomium have been on the rise for Ifeoluwa, she has been humbled about this, when I asked her how she felt, she was restrained, she attributed everything to God “I am created to worship God and this is the only way I can expressly do it more, It's a God's given gift, I don't own it, it has always been about God's love, His promises, personal messages, and message to others ....so that's the only means to express and connect with the supreme Being who's the owner of all (God)”.

Gospel remains one of the genres in the music industry, while Afrobeats dominates the scene, the gospel is still making headway, and the likes of Tope Alabi, Bola Are, Mercy Chinwo, and now Ifeoluwa Akinfolarin are topping the list.

When I asked her about the state of the gospel scene, she said “It is a powerful force in our culture and a cornerstone of the Christian Media. It has helped in soothing bleeding souls, freeing from slavery, gives hope from constant reminder of a promising future”. However, she appealed to the promoter to make life easier for independent artistes.

Ifeoluwa wasn't forthcoming with an answer when I enquired about her debut album, however, it's glaring that she is taking her time before formally announcing herself to the audience.

Health / Olumbe Akinkugbe Foundation Offers Free Medical Treatments To Rural/indigent Pat by EmmanuelDaralo: 6:11pm On Mar 01, 2022
Many rural dwellers with either serious or minor ailments in Ondo East and Ondo West local government areas of Ondo state have received free medical treatments courtesy of Olumbe Akinkugbe Foundation in partnership with a nongovernmental organization, Heart Doctors Foundation of Greece.

This is in line with the United Nations MDG's goal of good, qualitative, and free healthcare delivery to the rural communities across the world.

To implement the MDG's goal in Ondo state, Heart Doctors Foundation of Greece, (a group of medical volunteers) in collaboration with Olumbe Akinkugbe Foundation embarked on the free medical outreach to the communities in Ondo East and Ondo West Local Government Areas, Ondo State, southwest Nigeria.

By protocols and traditions, the medical team led by the Founder of Olumbe Akinkugbe Foundation, Barr. Olumbe Akinkugbe who is also the Chairman, Ondo State Information Technology Agency, SITA, paid a courtesy visit to His Imperial Majesty, Oba Dr. Victor Adesimbo Ademefun Kiladejo, Jilo the 111, CFR, the Osemawe and Paramount Ruler of Ondo Kingdom for his royal blessings.

The medical outreach tagged 'Ilera Loogun Oro' train later moved from Osemawe's palace to Bolorunduro, the administrative headquarters of Ondo East Local Government, and from there to Erinketa, Bagbe, and other rural communities where people who are in dire need of medical attention trooped out in large number to receive free treatment from the world-class medical experts.

Interestingly, the turnout was not only massive and encouraging but words are also insufficient to caption the excitement and happiness of the beneficiaries as they kept praying for the medical volunteers and the facilitator. Olumbe Akinkugbe Foundation.

Speaking with the press at the end of a week-long program, the facilitator, Barr. Olumbe Akinkugbe simply went philosophical as he asked, what more can I say, seeing my people, mostly the aged, women, and the children asking for more ?.

Over 2,000 people benefited from the medical outreach.

Music/Radio / A Timeout In Sapele Courtesy Gavin Cracck by EmmanuelDaralo: 2:02pm On Feb 02, 2022
By Emmanuel Daraloye

The expansive Obule School Auditorium in Sapele (South South of Nigeria) was filled on December 24, 2021, as the second edition of the Southern Groove was held. When I got to the venue at about five in the evening, the DJ was on deck ditching out old school tunes and new tunes to put the fans in the right mood. The sound guy was putting finishing touches to the system while the artists which I later got to know were backstage prepping up for the show.

While the regular section had an enormous influx, the gold and silver section of the hall were not left behind in their bid to have the best time of their life.

From kukere master, Iyanya, down to Jay Willz, to the hilarious Aproko, Kenny Blaq, and others, it was a night that will always ignite fun and ecstasy in the mind of the attendees.

Rave of the moment, Jay Willz had a swell time as the fans sang his song verbatim, while some wanted to touch him, others brought out their phone to capture the epic moment.

The show promoter Gavin Cracck has never been a greenhorn when it comes to organizing shows. Right from when he was an undergraduate at Delta State Polytechnic, he has been renowned for bringing the biggest artists to campus. From Kizz Daniel, Erigga, Oritsefemi, and more.

Three years after he graduated from school, Gavin Cracck made a return in 2019 with the first edition of Southern Groove which had Dr. Dolor's signee, Teni, as the major artist. She was supported by the likes of Skiibii, Mc Edo Pikin, and many more.

Having reintroduced himself to the public via Push The Limits which had the input of rapper Vector the Viper in June 2020 and also the follow up single Motiri featuring Brickz in 2021, Gavin Cracck is mute on what he working on for 2022, however it seems he has a lot in stock judging by his resurgence and recent 12 bars Tuesday freestyle.

With the successful turn-up and excellent feedback from 2021 editions of Southern Groove attendees, the organizers look forward to bringing the top three African artists for their 2022 edition.

Music/Radio / A Time Out With Lucia Dottie, The Botswana Superstar On A Global Journey. by EmmanuelDaralo: 1:16pm On Jan 25, 2022
By Emmanuel Daraloye

Lucia Dottie is one of the brightest stars from Botswana. I came across her music in October 2021 via recommendation from a friend. Her emotion-driven album “Libonile” served as my exposition into her craft. Artists all over the world are known for leaving some fragments of themselves in their music, Lucia Dottie is not an exception.

In a 47 minutes spin, Lucia Dottie explored topics like love, betrayal while also sampling South Africa's deep house music genre called Amapiano. She made a return with another Amapiano driven song towards the end of last year.

Born in Borolong village in the northern part of Botswana, Lucia Dottie has always been a culture and tradition, conscious soul, no wonder she got her break via a collaboration with her childhood idol “Culture Spears,” —a Tswana traditional music group. On social media platforms, she has embodied these elements. It ranges from her costume, language, and the cultural placement of her brand.

With about a six-hour distance between Nigeria and Botswana, we had to make use of the internet for an in-depth interview with this superstar. Lucia Dottie bares it all as she revealed what she has in the work for 2022, the reception “Libonile” has gotten so far, childhood music hero, and more.

Enjoy.

Emma: I listened to your last release “Nkhanyisele,” it is Amapiano driven and I love it. What is the inspiration behind the song?

Lucia Dottie: This song is deep and inspired by real-life situations, I have helped people in their music industry, and some turn out to be enemies but all I want is grace and protection from above and strength to keep me going

Emma: Your second studio album “Libonile” is a fusion of sounds, what's the concept behind the album?

Lucia Dottie: Libonile is fusion, yes, most of the songs in the album talk about love, betrayal, the sweetness o,f it, and hope. Every person have once been hurt and some gone due to depression so my music is therapy on its own

Emma: What was the creative process like for this album?

Lucia Dottie: My mood drove the whole concept, the instrumentals, were being driven by the emotions which were in the song. My produTheatie Sghubhu had to put Afrisoundsound so that people can easily attach to the emotions, doing night sessions at the studio, while people are asleep, no extra sound to destruct was an amazing process that them the sound so unique

Emma: How has the reception been like so far?

Lucia Dottie: So Iar I am receiving positresponsesonse from people both in Botswana and outside Botswana and that to me is a sign that my music is taking a different direction

Emma: For the new audience, who is Lucia Dottie?

Lucia Dottie: Lucia Dottie is a Kalanga lady from Botswana who hails from a small village called Borolong in the north part of Botswana. I pride myseonith my culture, tradition, norms, values and my strength lies in using different African languages, strong voc,als and Fusion in my music

Emma: Growing up in Botswana, what kind of music did you listen to and how has that shaped your sound so far?

Lucia Dottie: Growing up in Botswana I use to listen to Culture Spears which is one of the best traditional dangroupsoup in Africa aId I ended up collaborating with them in 20nd the songs we performed very well liLevantente, bare ngwana ga se wa, aka and malebeswa. I looked up to the late legend Oliver Mthukuzi by following himlearnedrnt never to give up in life, and that talent can never be taken from you, explore and believe in myself, I also grew up listening to Zahara from South Africa, Flavor from Nigeria, and also a lot of South African gospel musicians, Benjamin Dube, joyous celebration this legends shaped my sounds, the use of African sound that brings African feel in my music and the vocal notes

Emma: Do you have anyone you might like to work with in the future?

Lucia Dottie: I would like to work with international

Music/Radio / Why I Changed My Name...mimoe by EmmanuelDaralo: 7:53am On Dec 28, 2021
Why I Changed My Name...Mimoe

A week before Joshua Levites AKA Mimoe released his brand new extended play, I had a conversation with him. We talked about the reason for the change of name, what to expect from his new project, and many more.

The edited version is down below

How are you feeling right now and where are you?

Mimoe: I'm in Lagos, in my studio precisely. Being an indoor person that's where I am most of the days, working my ass off and doing what I love most. I'm feeling positive and motivated, you know, about the future and everything.

Close to a year after the release of your EP, You are back, what's up?

Mimoe: Yeah, not like I left though, been around. Working, making music, staying motivated, and going with the flow because I don't like to do things on impulse, I'll only do it when I know the time is right. No pressure.
What's up? I just changed my artist name to 'Mimoe', and a new EP will be out in a few days. That's what's up.

Why did the name change and how did you come about that name?

Mimoe: Firstly, I've always wanted a unique artist name that no one else has and at the same time represents what I am.
And secondly, the songs I released in 2018 under the name "Joshua Levites" when I started do not perfectly represent me anymore in terms of quality of production and genre. It's almost impossible to take down those songs, so now is the right time to do that name change and continue what I started with my EP last year.

Mimoe is an acronym for "Most Influential Musician On Earth". That's what I call myself, and it's who I want to be. Those close to me are familiar with this name.

Do you think it was necessary?

Mimoe: Absolutely. It was. Like I said, I don't like to do things on impulse. This is something I have been thinking about since 2019 and I know it's the perfect time to do it.

Moving up, what's the next thing

Mimoe: Okay, you're the first to hear it; I'll be releasing my EP on Christmas day. And I also have some major projects planned for next year. I can't say much about them now but expect 'hooge' things from Mimoe going forward.

Tell me more about your forthcoming EP?

Mimoe: The EP has six songs on it and I promise you it's nothing like you've heard from me. People who are close to me know me for being versatile and creative when it comes to songwriting. It's intentional because I don't like being predictable and restricted to a particular flow. Yes, I have my unique sound but I am not restricted. So watch out for this one.

How has your music career been since you started?

Mimoe: There's been a lot of unfolding. I've had to evolve from one phase to another phase and with each release, each project I feel like I'm just starting, the energy is always fresh. I feel like people have not even seen or heard enough of what I am capable of yet and I want to keep that vibe. Because as long as I feel this way I won't have any reason to be complacent or feel like I have arrived no matter what I achieve. There's always something next.

When did you start music?

Mimoe: When did I start releasing music? 2018. I released about four gospel songs before taking a break and going to music school. That was where I knew exactly what I wanted to do with music and what kind of music I wanted to make.

Who were your influences while growing up?

Mimoe: My family. I grew up in a family where everyone sings and understands the rudiment of music. Even my dad and mum met in the choir, lol. So it was quite easy for me to pick up music. I joined the children's choir at 4 and joined my first band with my brother at that age. And living in a mission house where my dad was the senior pastor of the church, music was everywhere. We had every kind of musical instrument around.

My dad loved playing records from Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade, Baba Ara, and so on. Growing up in a musical environment helped me a lot.

I observed you rarely collaborate, do you have a problem with that?

TV/Movies / Ayinla: Tunde Kelani Returns With A Bang by EmmanuelDaralo: 9:51am On Aug 12, 2021
Tunde Kelani broke his hiatus from movie-making with a semi-biopic movie titled "Ayinla". The movie which was released last month has generated reviews from fans and critics alike.

At the end of my appearance on Empire 104.5FM Akure yesterday. I got a free ticket courtesy MrLummie at Film House, Akure. While I have read numerous reviews on the movie. To watch it has been top on my agenda but my itinerary has been the stumbling block.

Set in 1980 in Itoko, Abeokuta. The movie chronicled the final laps of Ayinla Omowura's existence.

Four cogent narratives were central to the movie "Ayinla". His relationship with his manager. His love for beautiful women. His keen learning spirit. And also his lackluster relationship with the media.

Ayinla Omowura prefers to rehearse with his band members, record songs rather than speak to the press. At a press conference organized by Ajala in one of his promotional runs toward his London concert. He replied to questions about his kidnap with a song. This was after he had tongue-lashed the journalist.

Jaye (Adejoke Laoye), the journalist attached to him, finds it difficult to get across to him. It took the intervention of Ayinla's girlfriend to finally book an interview which was slated for the day he passed on.

Ayinla was illiterate. Baiyewu, who goes by the name Bayowa in this movie, was his right-hand man when he found any English words or expressions difficult to understand. Tunde Kelani through this movie reveals how showbiz works. In some of the scenes, Ayinla was more concerned about the music while he left the business aspect for Baiyewu to execute.

The blossoming of a musician career comes with other problems. One of which is the women. The women sometimes want to have a piece of them. Ayinla Omowura was in this imbroglio in the course of his life. Women flock at him while he sometimes has his eyes for some.

After a lot of initial resistance. Fali (Jumoke Odetola) falls into his romantic trap. She was already a fan as she revealed she bought his newly released song when Ayinla offered her one. The transition from a fan to a girlfriend could have been difficult for Fali due to the number of women around him: women don't like to share.

His love for women lead to the face-off between him and Bayowa. The domino effect of this disagreement was his death at a beer parlour.

Credence was given to other musicians who were in vogue then: Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, and The Bettles.

There were remarks by the fans on how his works serve different purposes in society: correct, educate and entertain. Beyond the lip-synching and the inconsistent mouth position while the music is played by Lateef Adedimeji. He gave a good account of himself: his expression, mannerism, With Ayinla, he looks set to join the iconic cadre of the industry.

41 years after the demise of Ayinla Omowura. Tunde Kelani has via this movie brought the artist back to the consciousness of the people. To his fans who were alive when he was making waves, this movie is nostalgic. The new school fans will through this movie have a slight feeling of what it takes to be Egunmogaji or Haji costly.

Music/Radio / OSO: Brymo’s Philosophical Traipse By Emmanuel Daraloye by EmmanuelDaralo: 9:42am On Aug 12, 2021
Brymo, the Nigerian alternative artist has been described via a lot of adjectives. The descriptions are mostly based on when the describer got to know him.

If he/she was lucky to listen to him during the formative R&b/Brymstone eras. The descriptions wielded would be different from when he voiced the career-changing Oleku's hook in 2011. Likewise, he/she won't employ the same words to describe him after 2013 rebellious moves against his then record label, chocolate city music, or the post-Chocolate City music years.

The artistic freedom Brymo fought for in 2013 has been paying off so far. The fans are happy, rather than mime and jump on stage like some of the mainstream artists do. Brymo has been performing on stage with a live band: Lagos Tout. He has headlined shows at Freedom park and Terra culture, not forgetting his appearance at Ake Book festival, Afropolitan Vibes, and others.

In 2018, Brymo released his fifth studio album. His third body of work since his infamous exit from Chocolate City. The album titled OSO (Wizard) contains eleven tracks and runs for 38 minutes.

If the album art cover is anything to go by. The dark content should be expected. It was designed by Fela Anikulapo's album maker Mr. Lemi Ghariokwu. A stern-looking Cat (an African black magic mascot), adorns the art cover with a red stripe separating the title and artist name. Some fans dub the art cover scary but the messages were hopeful, philosophical and sometimes like the art cover, they were dank.

Brymo thrives on controversies. From calling himself the greatest artist in Nigeria to his reply to a tweet by the undergraduate who requested for school fees. However, Brymo has been able to back it up with his music. His artistic prowess always works for him.

He took his controversial art to another level on the day he released the Oso album with the premiere of Heya's video ( the lead single off this project). He was semi-unclad in the Ayomikun Oludoyi directed music video (who has shot ads for the likes of Remy Martin, Hennessy, and music videos for underground artists). Brymo reveals his nether region while he plays a grand piano. Just as expected, the music video elicited frenzy comments from fans and critics. In retrospect, I think the essence of the Heya video flew over the heads of the people: The video was a nod to the primitive state of blacks before civilization.

With the right momentum already set by Heya's video. The fans had a good time with the album if online and offline comments are taken into consideration. Although the debate on where Oso stands on Brymo's discography rages on. This article is an annotation of the album.

On the opening track "No Be Me", Brymo flickers on four different themes. He dedicates four lines to each theme: relationships, the citizen's hypocrisy, politicians' antics, and his self implicating last verse. In the journey of life, everyone strives to make ends meet without regard for one another. The airy guitar strings enlarge the track. It gives each theme a deeper meaning.

No Be Me is a nod to the hypocritical state of mind of the citizens. While they complain about the corruption in the society. Consuming the national cake remains top on their agenda.

The place of a mother in a child's life can't be understated. Some artists dedicate tracks to this deity. On this album, Brymo pens an epistle to his mother. He Intimates her on his depressive state, the dishonesty in the society, while he is lucky to go farther than his dad. He is confused about the next step to take. Mama could have been the opening track but Brymo knows better.

Brymo's gravelly voice grates the ears on Heya but the piano string was the soothing balm. He returns to the formulae on "No Be Me", this time around, a line was added to each verse. Themes like love, Ignorance comes top while the artist self implicate himself on the third verse:

I don dey stubborn since the time I be small pikin

Na me dey always first see the problem
