Foreign Affairs / How Russian Media Mocked Uk's Trident Missile Failure by Emmaxx: 3:22pm On Feb 22 |
By George Bowden BBC News The failed test of a Trident missile from a Royal Navy submarine has led to a wave of ridicule in global media. Defence Secretary Grant Shapps was among those on board the HMS Vanguard when the incident happened off the coast of Florida last month. After news of the failed test leaked, Russian media wasted little time in mocking the UK over the incident. "Nobody was hurt, apart from the Royal Navy's reputation," said Rossiya 1's main news bulletin on Wednesday. The host of the top TV channel's 60 Minutes talk show, Olga Skabeyeva, said earlier in the day that "an attempt by the Royal Navy of formerly Great Britain - now we call it little Britain - to demonstrate its power ended in failure". And Alexander Kots, the star war correspondent of Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda, said on his Telegram channel that the incident "once again underscores that Great Britain has finally lost its status of 'ruler of the waves'". In China, Xinhua news agency's website ran an article with the headline: "British Navy botches test: Missile crashes into the sea with a 'thud', nuclear submarine hovering underwater". The website of China's state-run nationalist newspaper the Global Times went further. "Embarrassing! Royal Navy nuclear submarine Trident II missile fails for a second time in a row," its headline said. Xinhua's website with a Chinese-language report citing the BBC and The Sun from Haiwai Net, a state-run news website affiliated with the CCP-run People's Daily Overseas Edition newspaper Image caption, Xinhua's website carried a report citing UK media with the headline: "British Navy botches test" The Global Times article recalled earlier failures of the Trident programme, including when a missile "flew mistakenly towards the US" during a test in June 2016. That missile was reportedly intended to be fired 3,700 miles (5,954 km) to a sea target off the west coast of Africa . What went wrong remains top secret, but the Sunday Times quoted a senior naval source as saying the missile suffered an in-flight malfunction after launching out of the water. The Global Times piece added: "It is worth mentioning that not long ago, the Royal Navy's HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier also encountered an embarrassing malfunction." It noted that the HMS Prince of Wales, which replaced the Queen Elizabeth carrier in a series of exercises, "experienced a minor incident" of its own, causing a further delay. Elsewhere, Turkish media outlets have widely covered the failed Trident test. "The UK almost shot its own minister," the pro-government Aksam newspaper website said. "Fiasco during missile test: British Defence Minister barely escaped death," the pro-government Milliyet newspaper website reported. There have been no suggestions from UK officials or media reports that Mr Shapps came to any harm at all. "British nuclear missile test fails, again," was the headline on the New York Times's report, which added this raised "questions about the state of Britain's nuclear deterrence capability". "Britain's Navy has suffered a string of problems in recent months with its fleet," the article said. Research and additional reporting by BBC Monitoring

Politics / Nigeria Cost Of Living: People Turn To 'throw-away' Rice For Food by Emmaxx: 5:21pm On Feb 14 |
By Mansur Abubakar BBC News, Abuja As the rising cost of living continues to bite, many in northern Nigeria are turning to rice grains that millers normally reject after processing or sell to farmers to feed their fish. These are referred to in the Hausa language, widely spoken in the north, as afafata, which means "battling" because they are literally a battle to cook and eat as the grains are so hard. "A few years ago, people didn't care about this type of rice, and we usually threw it away along with the rice hulls, but times have changed," Isah Hamisu, a rice mill worker in the northern city of Kano, told the BBC. Despite the grains being broken, dirty and tough, afafata's cheaper price has made it more attractive for humans and helped poorer families to be able to afford to eat one of the staple foods in the country. Fish farm owner Fatima Abdullahi said her fish love it but because people are now eating afafata, its price has risen. Prices in Nigeria are increasing at their fastest rate for nearly 30 years. On top of global pressures, President Bola Tinubu's cancellation of the fuel subsidy plus the devaluation of the currency, the naira, have added to inflation. A standard 50kg (110lb) bag of rice, which could help feed a household of between eight and 10 for about a month, now costs 77,000 naira ($53; £41). This is an increase of more than 70% since the middle of last year and exceeds the monthly income of a majority of Nigerians. Many more families in the north are now opting to buy afafata In the face of this many are struggling to cope and in some states there have been cost-of-living protests. Earlier this month in Niger state, central Nigeria, protesters blocked roads and held placards saying that they were being suffocated by the rising prices. A few days later there was a similar demonstration in Kano in the north-west. In the aftermath, Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf admitted there was starvation in his state and said a solution must be found. The solution, for now, for some is found in afafata. Hajiya Rabi Isah, based in Kano state, told the BBC that if it were not for this type of rice her children would go hungry as she cannot afford the normal kind. "Normal rice is 4,000 naira ($2.70) per bowl which is beyond my means, I can only afford afafata which is 2,500 naira ($1.69) now," she said. One bowl of rice from the market can feed an average family in Kano for a day. "Without afafata, feeding my family would be a major issue for me." Market sellers have also noticed a difference. Man standing next to a bowl of rice IMAGE SOURCE,SANI HAMISU Image caption, Market seller Saminu Uba has noticed afafata becoming more popular Saminu Uba, who works in Kano's Medile market, said the afafata side of his business is booming. "Most people can no longer afford normal rice and they come for this which is cheaper even though it tastes less good," he told the BBC. One of his customers, Hashimu Dahiru, admits people are having to find ways of adapting. "The cost of goods is alarming - in just two months the price of everything has doubled,'' he said. "Our wives spend hours removing stones and dirt from the rice before cooking and even then it ends up tasting not nice, but we have to eat to survive." The presidency has said it is doing all it can about the situation, including the distribution of more than 100 tonnes of grains such as rice, millet and maize in the hope that it would cushion the effects of inflation and help lower the market price. But the president's aide Bayo Onanuga upset many recently when he said that Nigeria still had one of the lowest costs of living in Africa. The increasing price of rice is not a new problem though. President Tinubu's predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, banned the importation of rice to encourage more Nigerian farmers to grow the crop, but local producers have been unable to meet the demand. Before then Nigerian markets were filled with rice from Thailand at an affordable price for many. Mr Tinubu has lifted import restrictions, but now the shortage of foreign currency and the falling value of the naira has made bringing in rice trickier.

Sports / Ireland Women's Basketball Team Refuse To Shake Hands With Israel by Emmaxx: 6:30pm On Feb 09 |
Ireland women's basketball team refused to shake hands with Israel before their EuroBasket 2025 qualifier in Riga. Israel player Dor Saar said on Wednesday that the Ireland team is "quite anti-Semitic". Basketball Ireland said the comments were "inflammatory and wholly inaccurate". Ireland players also lined up for their anthem beside the team's bench rather than the centre of the court before the game, which Israel won 87-57. Basketball Ireland said in a statement before the start of the match that the team would not take part in "traditional pre-match arrangements". In the lead-up to the game Israel coach Sharon Drucker said Ireland "did not respect" what the game symbolises after Irish players expressed concern about playing. Basketball Ireland has reported Saar's comments to European basketball's governing body Fiba Europe. The match, which was moved to Riga because of the ongoing war in Gaza, went ahead despite Basketball Ireland facing pressure to boycott the fixture. Irish Sport for Palestine had called for the boycott over the Israel-Gaza war. Earlier in the week, Basketball Ireland chief executive John Feehan said the Irish team would face heavy fines and expulsion from the competition if the team boycotted their fixtures with Israel. He suggested a boycott would "destroy our women's international game for the next 10 years". Basketball Ireland's statement prior to the start of the game read: "Basketball Ireland informed Fiba Europe yesterday that as a direct result of recent comments made by Israeli players and coaching staff - including inflammatory and wholly inaccurate accusations of anti-Semitism, published on official Israeli Federation channels - that our players will not be partaking in traditional pre-match arrangements with our upcoming opponents. "This includes exchanging of gifts, formal handshakes before or after the game, while our players will line up for the Irish national anthem by our bench rather than centre court. "Basketball Ireland fully supports our players in their decision." In an interview on the Israeli Basketball Association's website, United States-based student Saar said: "It's known that they are quite anti-semitic and it's no secret, and maybe that's why a strong game is expected. "We have to show that we're better than them and win. We talk about it among ourselves. We know they don't love us and we will leave everything on the field always and in this game especially." About 1,300 people were killed during the Hamas attacks on southern Israel on 7 October last year. More than 27,700 Palestinians have been killed and at least 65,000 injured by the war launched by Israel since then, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Source: BBC.COM

Politics / Driver Killed As Abducted Ekiti Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom by Emmaxx: 4:46pm On Feb 04 |
Driver Killed As Abducted Ekiti Pupils, Teachers Regain Freedom The schoolchildren were released earlier on Sunday. However, the driver, who was also among the abductees, was killed and burnt by the assailants. By Godwin Osubu Updated February 4, 2024 The pupils and teachers of the Apostolic Faith Montessori School in Emure Ekiti kidnapped on January 29 have regained their freedom. The schoolchildren were released earlier on Sunday. However, the driver, who was also among the abductees, was killed and burnt by the assailants. Efforts to reach the police spokesman in Ekiti State, Abutu Sunday, were unsuccessful, but sources in the community confirmed their release to Channels Television. A senior police officer also confirmed the release of the victims to Channels Television. While the abductors had demanded N10 million each before releasing the 10 victims, he was however silent on whether any ransom was paid. When asked about the driver, the officer said his charred remains were recovered in the bush. The Ekiti State Government has also confirmed the release of the victims. The Special Adviser (Media) to the Governor, Olayinka Oyebode, said the pupils and their teachers were released on February 4 and brought to the Elemure Palace around 4 am. “However, the driver of the school bus was reported killed in the custody of the kidnappers,” the governor’s spokesman added. Timely Release Describing their release as timely, the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support that led to the rescue of the victims. “The Governor while congratulating the children and their families, expresses his profound appreciation to President Tinubu for giving specific directives that put the search and rescue mission on top gear. “He also thanks the security agencies for their collaborative efforts during the search for the students, just as he extends appreciation to Ekitikete home and abroad for their support during the security situation experienced last week,” the statement read. “Noting the traumatic experience of the children in the kidnappers’ den, Governor Oyebanji has directed the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani to take the children to the state Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti for proper medical treatment and post-trauma therapy. “The Governor, who kept vigil with Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele till 3.00 am to ensure the release of the children, acknowledges the solidarity shown by his colleague governors, former governors of the state as well as religious leaders, and traditional rulers.” The governor also restated the determination of his administration to stamp out crime and criminality from the state by making the environment unbearable for criminals operating under whatever guise. He stated that the killers of the two Ekiti traditional rulers would be fished out and made to face the maximum weight of the law, urging the people of the state to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement in their communities to the authorities.

As I tried to lift up a piece of rock on the site yesterday, these king and queen scorpions suddenly came out. I was so terrified that I jumped over them and sprinted away shouting Jesus..,thank you Jesus. Those things looked so big and scary! I had never seen scorpions that big in my life until yesterday. I thank God for His protection over His children.
