$100k/$50k + a 3-bedroom apartment in the Renewed Hope Estate + a Presidential honorarium for each Super Falcon and technical staff? That's like ₦153 million per player and over ₦76 million per staff No doubt. That's a big-boy move by Mr. President. It's a masterstroke of recognition. It’s thoughtful, it’s bold and of course, it has sent the whole country into a buzz frenzy. Let's mathematically know why. On the current ₦70k minimum wage, a civil servant’s total earnings over 35 years is ₦29.4 million. Comparing this to the ₦153 million figure, the difference is a staggering ₦123.6 million, which is more than four times the gross salary of a civil servant after 35-years. The ₦153 million reward per player would employ 2,185 Nigerians for a year on the current ₦70k minimum wage. Multiply that by 24 players assumably (₦3.67 billion) and you're looking at 52,457 jobs yearly. Factor in the $50k for each technical staff and that figure surpasses 60k jobs yearly. Now, people dey para on two fronts. On one side, you hear things like "This is a pure ostentatious jamboree." On the flip, you've got people clapping that it's a commensurate reward. Yes, both camps may have valid annexures to present in this court of public conscience. As for me, I'm standing in the middle with a gavel in hand and with a few cross-examinations to the table before the house. For avoidance of doubt, I'm not against the reward nor am I jumping on the bandwagon of praise-singers. I’m just invoking logical jurisprudence on how our resources are being allocated. You see, for years now, we've been spoon-fed this endless doctrine that Nigeria is broke. That the Treasury is hemorrhaging. They tell us fiscal constraint is the legal tender for why salaries are epileptic. But once it’s time for optics and paparazzi, dollars go just dey fly like bees. How far nau? Who dey deceive who? If you want to argue this, that's fine. But do so with credible annexures o and not sentiments. Let's proceed to cross-examine a few sacrosanct questions; 1. What's the take-home of a journalist on Grade Level 12 in today’s Nigeria? 2. What's a university professor earning after decades of service to academia? Right now, ASUU is already dusting off to file another strike. 3. How about the Minimum wage of ₦70k? We all know that was a legal royal rumble before it became a partial reality. 6. How much is a nurse earning in a government hospital who stands 12-hour shifts during epidemics with no hazard allowance? 7. What’s the salary of a police officer who is on the frontline risking his life daily only to go home to a leaking one-room apartment with no pension security? 8. How much is a local government worker earning who has not been paid salaries for 6-8 months in some states? 9. How many pensioners are still queueing for months under the sun just to verify their existence before collecting stipends that can’t even buy a bag of rice? Look at the classroom teacher. Three kids, one wife, plus extended family demands dragging ₦20k-₦25k monthly for molding the next generation. Tell me how that's not economic mislaughter. A secondary school teacher after 35 years of meritorious service retires without even a 100x100 plot in the outskirts of town. Their grand asset at best is a face-me-I-face-you as the luxury. But when it's time for PR stunts, Treasury suddenly becomes liquid again. Funds go appear like abracadabra. Don't get me wrong o, I’m genuinely happy for the Falcons. They earned it. They deserve the flowers, the applause, everything. But while we're dishing out presidential gestures for sporting excellence, let's also legislate equity and fairness for the unsung heroes who hold this country’s backbone with no cameras & no incentives. Reward excellence, yes. But remunerate loyalty and lifelong service too. That’s all I'm saying. Make everybody dey alright. Copied |
