Traditional worshippers demand stoppage of Reps hijab bill

The global head of Ifa priests, otherwise called the Araba Agbaye, Chief Owolabi Aworeni, on Tuesday cautioned the Kwara State Governor, Abdualrahman Abdulrazaq, against actions that might incite violence in the state.

Also, Aworeni urged the House of Representatives to halt a bill which sought to institutionalise the use of hijab in the country.

The issue of hijab has spurred heated reactions in Kwara State with Christian mission schools shut down in resistance against the move by the state government to enforce the use of hijab by Muslim students in the schools.

However, the Araba, represented by his deputy, the Araba Oluisese of Ibadan, Ifalere Odegbola, in an interview with journalists in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, said, “We are appealing to the Governor of Kwara State to caution against steps that are capable of turning Kwara State and the entire country into crises.

“Peace will reign supreme if religions generally are given pride of place. Let the Christian schools be, same for Muslim schools and schools for the traditional worshippers, without any religion lording it over the other.

“A traditional worshipper who decides to attend Christian school should imbibe the Christian practices and principles and ditto for a Christian child who chooses to attend a Muslim school. If he decides to attend the school, he has to abide by the practices.

“It is wrong for a child who belongs to another faith to want to force his way through. The governor should desist from acts that can incite violence or civil disorderliness. Academics should not continue to get interrupted as we have it at the moment.

“In the same vein, we are appealing to the National Assembly to drop the issue of use of hijab; we are warning that religious intolerance should not be allowed to polarise us as a people. Nigeria as a secular nation should be receptive to all religions and people should be free to practice their own faith without any interference.”

Fact about Mission Schools in Ilorin DON'T LET THEM FEED YOU WITH LIES CONCERNING THE CRISIS IN ILORIN.
TAKE TIME TO READ THIS.
1. Hundred % funding by government is a blatant lie. Enter C&S college and you will see the names of individuals and groups that put up the structures ditto for other Churches who may not put names on their own contribution. You may wish to know too that where there are shortage of teachers, the churches hire voluntary teaching staff and pay them among many other contribution.

2. The practice of the proprietors being the one that appoints the principal of the school from among their denominational members lend credence to the grant aiding status of the schools which this government is trying very hard to take away.

3. These government in 2019 awarded the renovation of 29 Schools in Kwara State, not a single Christian mission Schools was on the list, whereas 5 Islamic/Arabic schools were included. If the government has been funding Christian Schools 100%, why then the omission or will the present administration be comfortable to agree that previous administrations were so generous to Christian Schools as to maintain them at a standard that does not deserve the attention of the current administration? When a clever man put up is case, he should know that the judge too is not a foolish mind. The Churches have being contributing heavily to maintain their schools.

4. If the government owns the school then it is fraudulent for KWIRS to continue to collect exorbitant grant rent from the Churches on annual basis over the land on which the schools were built.

5. The case before the court is on the ownership of the schools but the appeal court judges granted obiter on use of Hijab which was not the substantive case put before it.

6. The judgement was appealed and presently in the supreme court. While wouldn't the government await the final pronouncement of the supreme court before implementing sections of the appeal court judgement?

7. Where there are no sinister religious motives, the matter is a straight forward one. If Muslim students must use hijab in all kwara Schools linked to the government of Kwara State, then return the schools to the original proprietors who are not willing to compromise the standard of their own faith too. You don't make another child to cry because you want the one that is doing the needless cry to stop.

8. More so, the case is not new and the status quo has resolved by the Kwara State Committee on Religious Matters as far back as 2008 is that proprietors of faith-based schools should determine mode of dressing and devotion in their respective schools. Why is this government hell bent on changing the resolution that has giving us peace over the years?

9. The narrative to classify the mission schools as full fledge public schools and not grant aided school is to follow up the hijab issue with complete change of the character of the school including changing the names to government secondary school or anything that suit their ill motive thus erasing Christian Missionary signatures from Kwara State schools.

10. The lies contained in the SSG release and CPS tvc interview are one and the same and should be disregarded.

KWARA STATE SCHOOLS BOARD
 
Speech delivered by His Excellency, The Military Governor of Kwara State, Colonel D. L. Bamigboye, at the Official Launching of the Kwara State Schools Board in Ilorin, State Capital, on 3/7/72

 
Civil Commissioners, Distinguised Ladies and Gentlemen,
 
I am delighted to be here this morning to launch officially the Kwara State Schools Board which came into being on the first day of June, 1972. This is a practical demonstration of the importance which my Government, among other Governments of the Federation, attaches to education.

It is gratifying to see the large assembly here this morning among whom, I understand, are proprietors, education secretaries, chairmen of boards of governors, principals of various grant-aided post-primary institutions and a lot more people from many walks of life. They are all welcome to Ilorin, the State Capital. It is my earnest prayer to wish everyone a pleasant stay in Ilorin and safe journey back home.
I want to start by acknowledging the depth of gratitude we owe to the Voluntary Agencies for the pioneering roles they have so far played in the progress of formal education in Nigeria, most especially in Kwara State.

Brief Historical Review
Some of the earliest primary schools in the country were opened by the Missions in what is today Kwara State. For instance, in 1865 the first primary school was opened at Lokoja. By 1918 similar Voluntary Agency schools were already opened at Offa,  at Ilorin and in Ogori. Gradually all the Christian Missions, Muslim Missions and Native Authorities, now Local Government Authorities, and communities became involved in establishing primary schools.
Today we have over 550 primary schools in the State. The Missions, the Native Authorities and the local communities have also contributed a great deal to the development of post-primary education in the State. As at date, there are 78 post- primary schools in the State. Of these only 3 are owned and run directly by the Government while the remaining 65 are Voluntary Agency, Community and private schools. I have gone into this aspect of the history of education in the State to show the value of team work among the Voluntary Agencies. Local communities private interests and the Government in the great task of educating our children. I hope that this tradition of team work will continue.

As many of you know, the proposal to establish Schools Board dated several years back. The National Joint Negotiation Council of 1964 under the distinguished Chairmanship of Justice Adefarasin and the Committee on the Grading Duty Posts in Voluntary Agency Institutions recommended it. Above all, the teachers themselves support it. These are concrete proofs of the desirability of the scheme hence my Government’s spontaneous reaction to it when due for consideration.

Full Scale Consultations
In my last Budget Speech I mentioned the intention of my Government to create the State Schools Board and the Local School Boards. I made good this promise in respect of one when on 18th May, 1972, I signed the Education Law ( Amendment) Edict, which gave birth to the State Schools Board on 1st June, 1972, the official launching of which we are all witnessing here today. The Board comprises seven able personalities, including a woman, to run the affairs of the Voluntary Agency grant-aided post-primary institutions. Before establishing the Board my Ministry of Education went into full scale consultations with the major Voluntary Agency institutions in the six Northern States, namely, the Protestants, the Roman Catholic, and the Islamic bodies as early as February, 1970. I am glad to announce that all the Voluntary Agency and community schools were fully in agreement and that the five “Part-time” members at this Board virtually represent these agencies although they are expected to function as individuals and according to their own best judgement.

Aspects of Education Administration.
While it is the main purpose of the State Schools Board to implement Asabia Recommendations, The Board has come in the nick of time to give concrete expression to Government thinking on certain aspects of the administration of education in this State. Of particular concern to the Government in this regard are the followings needs:-

(a) The need to have job security for teachers in Voluntary Agency Schools.

(b) The need to improve as well as unify service conditions of teachers in all Voluntary Agency Institutions.

(c ) The need for uniformly high standards between Government and Voluntary Agency institutions.

(d) The need to narrow, with the ultimate aim of closing, the gap in educational provision amongst the various areas in the State.

(e) The need to ensure adequate staffing for all schools.

The Edict establishing the Board clearly spelt out the functions of the Board which include 'power to appoint teachers (including power to make appointments on promotion, conform appointments and effect transfers) and to dismiss and exercise disciplinary control over teachers in all post – primary schools which are in receipt of Government grant-in-aid.

No Schools Takeover Yet.
It is appropriate for me at this juncture to clarify some misgivings about the State Schools Board. The term ‘take-over’ has become very current in our newspapers that it needs to be clarified in respect of our establishment of the Schools Board. I mentioned in my Budget Speech that my Government has not yet decided to take over Secondary Schools. What will now be taken over is the staff management in grant-aided post-primary institutions and NOT the institutions themselves. A total take–over of schools by Government means, among other things, a change in ownership of schools. In this connection, I want to remind the Voluntary Agencies that they are still the owner of their schools and therefore retain the rights over as well as responsibilities for them. For avoidance of doubts, let me mention some of your rights as proprietors under the new dispensation:-

   (a) The right of ownership of institutions. Proprietors still retain the greatest of proprietory rights namely, ownership of their grants aided institutions.  It should be noted that the existence of the Board will in no way detract from this.

(b) The names of schools remain as given by proprietors.

(c ) Religious orientation and practices in the schools remain generally undisturbed.

(d) The right to nominate Board of Governors with responsibility for the day-to-day management and welfare of the institutions remain unchanged. The Board of Governors will continue to function normally except in regards to staff matters which responsibility is now taken over by the State Schools Board. Finally,

(e) The total tone of the institutions remains the responsibility of the Board of Governors as the main organ of the Proprietors.

Proprietors’ Continued Participation
At this point, I want to emphasize the importance of proprietors’ continued participation. Under the new scheme the institutions whose staff management is being taken over should continue to be virile and progressive with bouyant financial support from community and Missions both for proper maintenance and necessary developments. By this I mean the mistake of the past should not be repeated whereby people misunderstood the role of the Local Education Authorities for ‘a total take-over’ of the transferred schools and consequently washed off their hands financially. I am here reiterating that proprietors still owe large duties to their institutions and these they should continue to discharge through their Boards of Governors, for example:-
the regular maintenance of the school buildings, housing of institutional staff, provisions of school accommodation, the general tone of the institution, appointment of Board’s own administrative staff and anything to do with the academic work of the school, other than teaching staff.
I hope that the Missionary as well, as the community spirits which engendered these institutions will continue to enable them to run without any financial hardship.

Finally I want to remind the State Schools Board of the enormous task ahead of it. I am sure that the Board is fully aware of the various problems which it is set up to solve I expect the Board to give the schools the best services possible and to demonstrate that with prudent management of the existing scale of financial provisions the teachers' lot can be greatly improved. The Board is set up to improve, standards and services conditions of teachers. It is also its major role to maintain discipline in the noble profession.
In Conclusion, I wish the Kwara State Schools Board many years of useful services to this State and to the country as a whole.

9 Nigerians You Probably Didn’t Know Have Won Grammy Awards

The Nigerian music industry has witnessed exponential growth over the years and with this growth has come a rising hunger for international visibility and dominance.

Over the years, different Nigerian artistes have promised to bring home a Grammy award as the prestigious award is considered music’s highest recognition.



From Skales, Terry Apala, Vic O, 9ice and Blackmagic are some of those who have promised but failed to deliver a Grammy to Nigerians.

In 2020, African Giant, Burna Boy became the latest Nigerian music act to be saddled with the responsibility of bringing home the honour. Although he didn’t promise fans a Grammy, music lovers all over Africa rejoiced when the “Killin Dem” hit maker scored a Grammy nomination.

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences that oversees the Grammy Awards released its 2020 Grammy awards nominees and Burna Boy got a nod thanks to his “African Giant” album under the “World Music Album” category. The singer was nominated alongside other music stars like Altin Gün for “Gece”, Bokanté & Metropole Orkest Conducted By Jules Buckley for “What Heat”, Nathalie Joachim With Spektral Quartet for “Fanm D’ayiti” and Angelique Kidjo for “Celia”.

A win by Burna Boy would no doubt be a win for African music as a whole but sadly, he lost out to Angelique Kidjo in 202. However, in 2021, he came back stronger and won in the same category with the album “Twice As Tall.”

He was not alone in his Grammy win as Nigerian superstar singer Wizkid also clinched a Grammy the same night thanks to his feature on the Beyonce led song “Brown Skin Girl.”

Interestingly, the music video for “Brown Skin Girl” video was co-directed by British-Nigerian filmmaker Jenn Nkiru, which means she also gets to have a Grammy!

In light of Burna Boy and Wizkid becoming the latest Nigerian Grammy award-winning entertainers, let’s take a look at a list of Nigerians who have won a Grammy award.

Sikiru Adepoju is a percussionist and recording artist and plays primarily in the genres of traditional African music and world music. He plays a variety of instruments and styles. He first won a Grammy in 1991 as a part of Mickey Hart’s group Planet Drum, whose title album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album. That was the first time there was a Grammy in that category. He won again on 8 February 2009 as a part of Mickey Hart’s latest group Global Drum Project, whose title album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album at the 51st annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel (Seal)

In 2006, he became Nigeria’s first Grammy Award winner for his work on Ali Farka Touré‘s In the Heart of the Moon which he was credited in three tracks. He also won a second Grammy in 2009 for his work on Cassandra Wilson‘s 2008 album titled Loverly.

Olusola is a musician, beatboxer, cellist, rapper, record producer, singer, and songwriter best known as the beatboxer of the vocal band Pentatonix. He has three Grammy awards to his name. On February 8, 2015, Pentatonix won a Grammy in the “Best Arrangement, Instrumental or a cappella” category for their song “Daft Punk”, a medley of songs by Daft Punk. On February 15, 2016, Pentatonix won a Grammy in the same category, this time for “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” from their “That’s Christmas to Me” album. On February 12, 2017, Pentatonix won a Grammy in the “Best Country duo/group performance” category for “Jolene” which featured Dolly Parton.

Honourable mentions of Nigerians artists who have received Grammy nods include King Sunny Ade who is the first to ever receive a nomination in 1983. Femi Kuti has four nominations to his name and Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichie-Ngozi also has a nomination thanks to her feature on Beyonce’s 2015 album.

Burna Boy‘s big win in the Global Music category with his Twice as Tall album is no little achievement. When he lost to Republic of Benin’s Angelique Kidjo in 2020, many felt he was still deserving. Even Kidjo publicly acknowledged the talent, genius and greatness that Burna typifies.

The African Giant didn’t retreat into his corner to sulk. He dropped a no-skip album before the end of that year, which ultimately put him in the frame for consideration this year. And on Sunday night, a Grammy win cemented Burna’s African Giant status.

Wizkid’s win came via his feature on Beyonce’s Brown Skin Girl video. Wizkid has skirted around the edges of a Grammy win for a few years. Although “One Dance,” his monster hit collaboration with Drake was snubbed by Grammy, “Views“, the album on which the track appears was nominated for the Album of the Year. Wizkid has a producer and featured artist credits on the album.
