The Super Eagles of Nigeria moved up three steps up to 63rd in the monthly FIFA world rankings for January released on Thursday. Sunday Oliseh’s side, despite failing to impress at the African Nations Championship, chalked up three points for the whole of last month to finish 543 on the ranking after three wins, a draw and a defeat last month. They are also the 12th best team in Africa.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champions are currently eight places adrift of Egypt who they host next month in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers next month in Kaduna.

The Pharaohs are ranked 55th in the world and are eighth in Africa.

Meanwhile, Belgium, Argentina, Spain, Germany and Chile are the top five teams in the world. The next FIFA rankings will be published on 3 March.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, has said that the institution admitted only 12,225 for the 2015/2106 academic session.

No fewer than 103,000 candidates applied to study in the university in the session, according to Ambali.

Of this number, 73,023 scored the minimum admission requirement of 180 marks and above.

The VC, while giving the break down, noted that 62,224 candidates registered for the post-UTME, with 30,384 candidates scoring 50 per cent and above; and 12,225 candidates representing 11.9 per cent securing admission.

Ambali, however, added that 11,051 candidates, representing 10.7 per cent of the applicants, registered in the university for the session.

He spoke during the institution’s matriculation on Friday.

Noting that the university would continue to offer quality education, the VC urged the fresh students to be of good behaviour and be committed to their studies.

Ambali said, “There are two basic factors for success in life. These are doing what is right and eschewing what is wrong. What is right includes being serious with your studies as well as obeying the rules and regulations.

“What is wrong on the other hand includes violating the extant university rules and engaging in unbecoming conduct.”

THERE has been so much speculation and guess work on the na­ture of Coach Sunday Oliseh’s illness that there are even insinua­tions that it could be the “handiwork of his en­emies”

Since he assumed of­fice as coach of the Su­per Eagles, the former Super Eagles star has­dnot spent quality time with the team due to an ailment that had seen him going in and out of hospital

On Sunday we report­ed that the coach who led the Eagles to a disas­trous outing in Rwanda did not come back with the team because of what close associates termed “fear for his life”

Today, Daily Sun­Sports can exclusively report that if Coach Oliseh was a player, he would not have been signed by Nigeria for “chronic injury” prob­lems.

A very authoritative source told us yester­day that the NFF did not investigate properly before signing Oliseh as he is “not fit”

“During the World Cup in Brazil, Oliseh was part of the techni­cal study group, yet he did not write down one sentence because he was reported ill while he was in Brazil.

His colleagues virtu­ally helped him to write his report.

“At one stage he was vomiting so much that we thought he will die. It was okay for us to ask him to take time out to treat himself while cov­er up for him.

“Am sure the NFF did not know he was not medically fit, if not they would not have gone for him, “our source insisted.

This exclusive rev­elation has put paid to insinuations by sympa­thizers who laid his ill­ness on the doorstep of “enemies” who want to eliminate him from the national team job.

With CHAN out of the way and the Na­tions Cup preliminar­ies in March, the NFF will need a fit Oliseh to take charge of the chal­lenging double header against Egypt.

The immediate past governor of Kogi state, Idris Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party, was absent at the inauguration of his successor, Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress, on Wednesday.

He was not available to perform handover formalities or make a speech at the inauguration ceremony.

Mr. Wada’s whereabouts remained unknown but those close to him said he might have travelled out of Nigeria.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State on Monday named the only Model School in Ikenne and the recently-completed PlainField Estate at Oke-Mosan in Abeokuta after the late Chief Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo.

Amosun made the announcement in his address at Sagamu International Stadium, where he hosted eminent personalities as part of activities organised for the burial of the late HID.

The governor, who eulogised the deceased, described her as “a pride of womanhood,” promised that his administration would uphold the legacies of the Awolowo dynasty.

Despite the fall in global crude oil prices, its harsh impact on Nigeria’s revenue and the current petrol scarcity in many cities, the Federal Government is still subsidising by N10.58 for every litre of the product consumed across the country, latest figures from the Petroleum Pricing Regulatory Agency have shown.

This is coming as fuel scarcity in Abuja and neighbouring states of Kaduna and Nasarawa continued on Monday. The queues by motorists at the few filling stations that had the product to sell stretched farther than they were previously.

Experts in the oil and gas sector have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop subsidising petrol, explaining that aside from the fact that it would check the illegalities in the system, the removal of subsidy would also help address the issue of fuel scarcity.

They also noted that the fall in oil prices was another reason why subsidy on petrol should be stopped as the government’s revenue from crude sales was being badly hit by the plunge in the product’s cost.

Available data from the Central Bank of Nigeria on Monday put the crude oil price at $42.42 per barrel. The price of crude oil has continued to fall in the past one year, shedding about $100 during this period.

The latest figures from the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, based on average Platts prices for November 20, showed that the Expected Open Market Price of petrol, which is the summation of the landing cost plus the subtotal margins, was N97.58 per litre.

This is against the approved retail price of N87 per litre, indicating that the Federal Government is subsidising the product by N10.58 for each litre sold to consumers.

Figures from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation also showed that an average of 40 million litres of petrol is consumed on a daily basis throughout the country.

By implication, the Federal Government will be paying about N423.2m to importers daily as subsidy on petrol sold in the nation.

The continued payment of subsidy to oil marketers by the government has been a contentious issue among stakeholders in the sector.

Last week Tuesday, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director, NNPC, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, stated that the Federal Government might review the fuel prices by January and explained that the subsidy regime was no longer sustainable.

Kachikwu had said, “Frankly, sustaining subsidy based on the rate that we have now is a major problem for the country and is only happening through the magnanimity of the President. We are looking at the price modulations.

“By January, we will have a price modulation dynamism that will enable us to address the critical issues with the marketers. But the issue of price reduction is not in the horizon at all.”

Similarly, a former Governor of the CBN, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on Thursday advised President Muhammadu Buhari to remove the controversial fuel subsidy and privatise the nation’s refineries immediately.

According to him, Buhari has the moral authority and legitimacy to quickly remove the subsidy and privatise the refineries.

“The fundamental case against subsidy removal is not economic: it is the fact that the citizens do not trust the government to optimise the use of the proceeds for their welfare. If PMB does not deal with these issues now, I wonder when, if ever,” he said.

Kachikwu told journalists in Abuja last week that the fuel scarcity across the country was largely as a result of the non-payment of the N413bn subsidy claims of the oil marketers, adding that they all stopped importing petrol because of the debt.
