In its bid to meet the high expectations of Nigerians, the President Muhammadu Buhari government is said to be working on a figure of between N7tn and N8tn for the 2016 bugget. The figures are much more higher than the 2015 budget of N4.4tn.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo disclosed this in a paper entitled: ‘The economy – Where we are today’, which he delivered at a presidential retreat organised by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for ministers-designate on Thursday.

The Senate on Wednesday kicked against the N64 billion contract for the construction of a second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The Senate, at its plenary declared that the contract sum was “too high’’.

In a three-point motion by Sen. Dino Melaye (APC Kogi West), the Senate acknowledged the urgent need for a second runway at the airport, but that the contract sum was “just too exorbitant’’ . The Senate also urged the Federal Government to ensure that due process and diligence was followed in the design, award and procurement of the contract, while the cost should be “drastically reduced’’.

“The Federal Government should reduce this unrealistic cost and duly monitor the award process,’’ Melaye said. Melaye noted that the proposed cost of the runway far exceeded the cost of constructing some airports around the country and even abroad.

He noted that the terminal 5 in Heathrow Airport, with four lanes of 4km runway, cost less than N25 billion, while the entire Gombe Airport, with 3.66km runways, cost N8.2 billion. He said that the Jigawa Airport cost N11 billion, Bauchi Airport, N12 billion, Enugu Airport, N13 billion, while the Akwa Ibom Airport cost about N18 billion.

He, therefore, wondered why the proposed construction of a mere runway at Abuja Airport would cost N64 billion. Melaye recalled that the contract had been cancelled earlier by the Jonathan’s administration over its high cost, and urged President Muhammudu Buhari to similarly reject it.

The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, in his remarks, acknowledged that the second runway was necessary, but added that it could only be executed “at a reasonable price’’. “It is important, but we cannot continue with such reckless expenditure.

“We have to let all the MDAs know that those days of recklessness are over and these kinds of figures will not be accepted. “`In fact, it is not just in aviation, but in all other sectors of the economy,” he declared. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Senate thereafter continued the screening of ministerial nominees.

Jails in Brazil's Pernambuco state are lawless dens of iniquity being run by inmates who sell crack cocaine to prisoners and murder anyone who owes them money, an investigation has revealed.

Bosses in the state's overcrowded prisons are frightened of inmates and give the most dangerous ones called 'chaveiros' - or 'keyholders' - control over their cell block for them to 'maintain order'.

The authorities give the job to convicted murderers, rapists and drug dealers because they 'command respect from fellow inmates', a jailbird told charity Human Rights Watch (HRW), who reported on the four Pernambuco prisons, where there is one guard for 31 inmates.

It found chaveiros-run jails are hell holes where disease is rife, vulnerable ones are gang raped and relatives outside are blackmailed into paying off inmates' drug debts.

He noted that the Giesi Ruling House Ruling House has not disqualified any applicant from all the 8 royal families under it and that interested princes from the ruling House were still submitting their

A four-man gang of armed robbers, weekend, invaded the residence of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, members serving in Abeokuta , Ogun State, and robbed them at gunpoint.

The NYSC lodge is located behind Develop-ment Centre, Presidential Boulevard, Abeokuta.

According to Vanguard the robbery, which occurred on Saturday at about 3a.m., was the third in five months.

Some of the victims, who spoke said the four-man gang escaped through bush path after the operation.

Two of the bandits moved from one room to another, while the other two stood guard outside.

Meanwhile, efforts to get the Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Police Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, on the issue proved abortive. But sources said efforts were ongoing to provide adequate surveillance in the area.

The West African Examinations Coincil, WAEC has released the May/June 2015 results and witholding the results of students in 13 states that are owing the Council.

The Head of Nigerian Office, Mr Charles Eguridu who disclosed this at its Yaba Office said:”Out of 1,593,442 candidates who sat for the examinations, only 616,370 candidates, representing 38.68% obtained credits in five subjects and above including English Language and Mathematics.”

Justifying the slight improvement in the results from previous years Eguridu said that in 2013, a total candidates who obtained five credits in English and Mathematics were 639,760 representing 38.30 per cent.

He said, in 2014, 529,425 representing 31.28 per cent obtained five credits in English and Mathemstics.
