PoliticsTB Joshua Speaks On 2015 Elections by EngrAbiola(op): 10:00am On Dec 30, 2014
Prophet T.B. Joshua granted a rare interview to Nigeria’s New Telegraph newspaper in March 2014 in which he made several revealing statements concerning the February 2015 elections. With the date of elections steadily drawing closer and tensions arising around the nation, the clerics words appear even more pertinent now than they did nine months ago.

TB Joshua 1

TB Joshua warns politicians not to derail the nation’s democracy. He spoke with TAI ANYANWU. Here is the transcript of the interview:

There are so many troubles in Nigeria today - problems of insecurity, threats to national unity, political manoeuvrings by rival political parties. What are your comments concerning these troubled times in the country?
It is a normal thing for a country that has a bright future, God’s promise. A bright future always attracts persecution, condemnation and enemies who realise that the future is bright - you see a lot of pressure and threats. The country is on the path to greatness; it will compete with any Western nation in the future and the Western nations know that Nigeria is going to be a giant. That is why there support in these trying times is needed. There is no country that has not passed through this.

All the countries that have become great today all passed through turbulence that nearly consumed them. How we manage the situation matters. If we don’t manage it well, we will not witness the greatness. It is not that the greatness would not come but that would not be for our generation. The greatness will still come but for the coming generation.

With the turbulence being experienced in some states of the federation and the election around the corner next year, how do you think this will play out?
Elections will not happen in some states because of the frequent attacks. This could affect between three to four states. The states would be a no-go area due to violence and elections would not take place in those states unless we move closer to God. We must intensify our prayers. This is what God has showed me and you can imagine what would happen if elections don’t hold in those states. It would have a great implication for our democracy.

How should we manage it?
We should not allow the politicians to politicise all the areas of our lives. For example if you want to enjoy anything, you have to be part of their party. For example, unless you are part of their party, you cannot benefit from things that should be available to you as a citizen. Look at electricity, health etc - they have politicised everything. Religion has been politicised. Even Christianity has been politicised. They go to church; the pulpit is where they campaign now.

Now they go to churches and mosques to bomb them. These are people in church who had gone to pray for themselves. Must everybody become a politician? How we handle the situation at hand now matters. If the situation is not well managed, we will find ourselves postponing the great Nigeria. In other words, we would not witness it but it would be witnessed by our children.
Don’t let us politicise every area of our lives. Let us carefully play our politics with keen decency because 2015 matters in the history of Nigeria. It is either we cross the bridge successfully or it collapses. A good Nigerian that wants this greatness should be able to pay whatever proper price that is needed to be paid to make this dream of a great Nigeria possible. If your being in politics will make this greatness come, then join. From now to 2015 is a very important period in the history of Nigeria and if we don’t manage the situation well, our democracy would be rubbished.

What do you mean by 'our democracy would be rubbished'?
A situation where there would be lawlessness in the sense that the law would not be capable of guiding us because of the pros (for) and cons (against) as contained in the law. That would now take so much time which would lead Nigeria to a discussion table. Where would you and I be at that time?

What can you say about APC and PDP?
In body we can call it APC and PDP but in spirit, they are one and the same thing. I am yet to see the difference. I am looking forward to seeing the difference.

With the situation in the country today and the agitation on 2015, what advice do you have for politicians not to create more tension in the polity and what is the way out?
The advice - many of us need to leave politics while many others need to join in order to inject fresh blood. The people that need to leave politics are not the common people. This is in order to avert the disaster that could rubbish our democracy.

PoliticsJonathan’s Government Not Responsible —osinbajo by EngrAbiola(op): 8:58am On Dec 28, 2014
The Vice Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has said poor management of resources rather than the lack of resources has been the bane of nation’s economy.

osinbajo

Proper management, according to Osinbajo, has been dodging the country for a while.

“The problem is management of resources. If we plug the loopholes, you’ll see the resources being pooled together.”

Osinbajo said this on Saturday at a parley with journalists at his campaign office in Victoria Island, Lagos.

He said insecurity would be the first thing his government would tackle as it affected every Nigerian irrespective of ethnic group, class or creed.

“Security is the first duty of any government; you cannot fight a war where leadership is uncertain; where leadership is not sure of itself and its responsibilities.

“The type of leadership we need to successfully fight a war is lacking. The commander-in-chief has responsibility for everything. You can’t continue to say your enemies did this or that. You’ve got to take responsibility and that is what is lacking in the current dispensation.

“The people I talked to in my bus trips, both men and women asked, ‘What are you doing about the Chibok girls?’ I was surprised that people here in Lagos could be that concerned. It shows everyone is concerned. My take is that as the president, you should visit these places, talk to them and let them see that you are doing something. And one of the things to be done is equipping the military.”

Osinbajo added that corruption had become the norm in Nigeria, especially in the civil service.

“We have reached a point where we need to draw a line because this country can’t continue like this. A few days ago, we heard that some billions were missing from the oil fund. You and I know that all this is so because there are no consequences. What is required is an administration where people believe that the number one man will not tolerate corruption. That is the first step.”

The stabilisation contract is another drain pipe. Billons of dollars are being lost every day. But if these loopholes are plugged, we can get something done. When oil was sold for 110 dollars everybody was saving; why didn’t we save?” He said.

BusinessW’bank Lends $200m For Purchase Of Etisalat Towers by EngrAbiola(op): 7:34am On Dec 09, 2014
Etisalat Nigeria on Monday said the sale of 2,136 of its towers to IHS Holding Limited was on course, and confirmed the World Bank lent $200m to IHS to help to fund its purchase

The transaction is the first by a major Global System of Mobile communication operator in Nigeria and is expected to close before December 30, 2014.

To this effect, Reuters reported the IHS had raised $2bn in equity and $600m in debt in November and the money from the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation was part of this.

Under the terms of the transaction, it was gathered that HIS would invest a further $100m in the acquired towers, advanced generators, efficient batteries and alternative energy solutions to reduce diesel consumption and improve efficiency of grid usage.

The Chief Executive Officer of Etisalat Nigeria, Mr. Matthew Willsher, said continued demand for mobile connectivity along with increased consumption of data required reliable and effective networks that were also cost-efficient for the network operators.

The company sold 39.3 million iPhones in its latest quarter and could sell as many as 60 million during the last three months of 2014 with the holiday selling season. Apple also moved 12.3 million iPads and 5.5 million Macs last quarter.

#2 Microsoft

#2 Microsoft

Brand value: $63.0 billion
1-year change: 11%

PoliticsKatsina Governor, Shema, Caught On Video Urging Supporters To “kill” by EngrAbiola(op): 1:37pm On Nov 19, 2014
A video depicting the Katsina Governor, Ibrahim Shema, prodding his party members to physically assault and possibly “kill” opposition politicians in the state, has gone viral on the internet.

The amateur video was first posted on the internet on November 12.

It shows the governor, dressed in white agbada and brown sandals, standing on a red carpet, and addressing a crowd in what seemed like a political rally. He spoke in Hausa.

Mr. Shema likened opposition politicians to “cockroaches” before asking the crowd what to do if they found the nocturnal insect in their apartments.

The crowd chorused “Kill them!”

“Crush them!” the governor responded, agreeing with the crowd.

Similar calls have triggered violence in other countries including the East African country, Rwanda, where the majority Hutus’ description of the minority Tutsis as “cockroaches”, helped fired a 100-day murderous campaign that saw over 800,000 Tutsis killed.

BusinessDangote Reduces Cement Price To N1,000, A 41 Per Cent Reduction by EngrAbiola(op): 7:35am On Nov 03, 2014
Dangote Cement Plc has announced a 41 per cent reduction in the prices of cement, with the different grades of the essential commodity now selling for between N1,000 and N1,150, exclusive of Value Added Tax.

In the new price regime announced on Sunday by the Group Managing Director, Dangote Cement, Mr. Devakumar Edwin, a 50kg bag of the 32.5 cement grade will now sell for N1,000, while the higher 42.5 grade is to sell for N1,150 per bag instead of the current N1,700 that both grades were going for.

Edwin said in a statement that the move was in line with the company’s commitment to the nation, especially the need for the development of infrastructure and boost ongoing efforts to reduce the near 20 million housing deficit in Africa’s largest economy.

“We recognise the need for a dramatic increase in the response to the huge infrastructure and housing deficit in the country, and one of the ways of addressing the issue is bringing the price of building materials down to much more affordable levels, especially cement, which is within our own control as part of our contribution to the transformation agenda of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration and the attainment of key milestones in the Millennium Development Goals,” he was quoted as saying.

Since the commencement of the implementation of the backward integration policy for cement in the country over 12 years ago, the local production capacity of the product had risen from less than two million metric tonnes per annum to about 38 million metric tonnes per annum currently.

During the period, over $20bn has been directly and indirectly injected into the Nigerian cement industry with Dangote Cement Plc accounting for 60 per cent of that expenditure.

Edwin also said that Dangote Cement would continue to ensure the alignment of its corporate social responsibility with its strategic business initiatives, and would continue to evaluate its pricing regime in the country’s best interest.

According to the statement, stakeholders have commended the price reduction and say the cement market is entering the high demand phase as the dry season, which provides the opportunity for increased construction and building activities, is setting in.

In compliance with the directive of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria on the various grades of cement and their prescribed uses, Dangote Cement recently inaugurated its brand of the premium 32.5 grade, which has been restricted to plastering use only.

The largest cement producer in Nigeria noted that the move was to develop a full bouquet of cement types to meet the varying needs of consumers for the different purposes.

The company produces the 42.5 grade for column casting, block making, decking and other general purpose construction works that require high strength, while the 32.5 grade is for rendering or plastering.

The company also produces on demand the 52.5 grade for specialised construction of high strength structures such as bridges, flyovers and sky scrapers, among others.

Dangote Cement said in compliance with the SON standard for cement quality and packaging, the lower 32.5 grade would be clearly labelled in order to minimise the incidence of building collapse arising from the misapplication of the different grades of cement.

[Must Read] Are Youth Corpers educated slaves? (NYSC Equals National Yearly Slavery made Compulsory)

Many prospective corpers might probably be fidgeting to leave for the NYSC camp especially after an epidemic wait. I was reactively excited when

i initially heard the rumour of the camp duration to have been reduced to 3days due to the fear of EVD. Out break. But, I guess its all back to the

usual 3 weeks of camp arrest, after W.H.O. has officially announced that the country now has 0% record of the virus.
Permit me to explain a latent truth some of us as graduates and prospective corpers might not understand. The secret behind this is that we are

only being used as educated slaves for a compulsory duration of 12 months. A brilliant idea by those involved(the employers) to save big time

rather than employ qualified graduates for such offices. The difference save is still used for their own selfish interest. Ok, now you probably have

been called a graduate for say months or even a year and what difference does it make as you are yet to answer the so called clarion call.

After spending 4,5,6 or even more years in the higher institution, you are now limited to an allowance of N19,800 about ($120) every month for a

year. Peanut! After making some of this corpers used to the monthly allowance for such duration of time, they are now given what i call a "go

home letter" making them to start all over again job hunting. I can imagine the frustration conveyed in the heart of the unemployed. Maybe, this

whole thing would have been a better idea if and only if after the conclusion of the service, graduates are certain of a job or better still paid a

reasonable amount that they could use to get self employed. And not for employers to utilise their educated man power and drop them after

365days so as to take in freshers. Chai! Reminds me of what a promiscuous man does to ladies. How many developed countries are known to put

their graduates through such an un-necessary hitch. At this point, someone might say Americans do. America emulated the system from Isreal

who made theirs compulsory. Hence, about 80% Isrealite youth have military training. Yes, no doubt about that but what becomes of the youth

during and after the training. Are they left to loiter the streets for donkey years job hunting?
We say its a service to humanity yet, how many of this corpers are retained regardless of the quality of their degrees, even after their relentless

efforts and services. Simply because they expect another batch of corpers who will replace their services. Hence, the rapid growth of un-

employment seem impossible to be expunged from the full list of problems...

To my own opinion, time is a respecter of no man and to that regards FG. and other employers should permanently employ and not temporary

subject graduates to part time jobs as an anual routine.

A former Head of State and presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has said he is not a religious fundamentalist. He also said he was not opposed to a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2015 elections.

Muhammadu-Buhari-360x225

In an interview with TheCable, an online news medium, which was published on Saturday, Buhari hinted that his running mate may be a Muslim or a Christian.

He noted that he had chosen Christians as his running mate on several occasions, contrary to the belief that he is a fanatic.

Buhari said, “Nigerians will always uncover impossible room for manoeuvre for politicians. I had to face one of the governors during one of our party’s meetings (over the issue of religion).

“In 2003, I chose Chuba Okadigbo as my running mate. He was a Roman Catholic. He was an Igbo. In 2007, I picked Edwin Ume-Ezeoke. He was a Roman Catholic. He was an Igbo. And in 2010, I chose even a pastor, Pastor Tunde Bakare.

PoliticsRibadu Defends Defection To PDP by EngrAbiola(op): 7:54am On Aug 18, 2014
A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Sunday justified his defection from the opposion All Progressives Congress to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, saying the APC was not better than the PDP.

Ribadu 1

Ribadu, who was the 2011 presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, forerunner of the APC, said there was no difference between the PDP and APC, in terms of the character of the people who constituted both parties.

The ex-EFFC chairman, who spoke through his spokesman, Mr. Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, said this while fielding questions from one of our correspondents in Abuja.

He said, “In Nigeria, especially in politics, you can’t say that this is an exclusive party for the people who are thieves or this is for good people.

“It’s just like saying that all Yorubas are this or all Igbos are this. In every group of people, there must be good people and there are bad people. Of course, the good may be more than the bad or the bad may be more than the good in any group.

“But there is no any party that is exclusively for the good people or for the bad people.”

He said that his defection was not borne out of his desperation to realise his political ambition but was based on his patriotic zeal to serve the country and its people.

Abdulaziz said, “It is not true that he (Ribadu) was desperate to realise his political ambition. This is because this decision was taken in the overriding interest of serving the people.

jonathan-in-sokoto-300x234

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission and national security agencies for ensuring that the election was free, fair, credible and peaceful in line with the commitment of his Administration.

He applauded Osun people who came out en masse in all the local government areas of the state to peacefully and freely exercise their democratic right.

The statement said the President believed that the free, fair and peaceful conduct of the election fully reaffirmed his administration’s determination to positively reform Nigeria’s electoral process.

“As Governor Aregbesola prepares to begin a second term in office, President Jonathan looks forward to continuing to work with him and other state governors to further improve the living conditions of Nigerians in Osun and other states of the country.” It stated

HealthEbola Vaccine For Trial Next Month – WHO by EngrAbiola(op): 6:41am On Aug 11, 2014
Clinical trials of a preventative vaccine for the Ebola virus made by British pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline, may begin next month and be made available by 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

WHO

In a statement on its website, the WHO’s head of vaccines and immunisation, Jean-Marie Okwo Bele, told French radio at the weekend: “We are targeting September for the start of clinical trials, first in the United States and certainly in African countries, since that’s where we have the cases.

“We are optimistic about making the vaccine commercially available; we think that if we start in September, we will have the results by the end of the year.

“And since this is an emergency, we can put emergency procedures in place … so that we can have a vaccine available by 2015,” Jean-Marie said.

Several vaccines are being tested, and a treatment made by a San Diego-based Mapp Biopharmaceutical, ZMapp, has shown promising results on monkeys and may have been effective in treating two Americans recently infected in Africa.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s Health Ministry has said that its national who died last week after returning from Sierra Leone had tested negative to Ebola virus, according to initial international laboratory results.

The ministry said that samples submitted to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention came back negative for the Ebola virus, adding that samples were also sent for testing to a laboratory in Germany.

Saudi Arabia is not issuing visas this year to Muslim pilgrims from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea as a precaution to avoid the spread during the hajj pilgrimage, which sees massive crowd of people from around the world.

However, a Nigerian man who was quarantined after he showed Ebola-like symptoms during a trip to Hong Kong has tested negative to the deadly virus.

The southern Chinese city government said in a statement yesterday that the man had “tested negative to Ebola virus upon preliminary laboratory testing”.

The 32-year-old arrived in Hong Kong from Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous city, via Dubai on Thursday, and was hospitalised on Sunday after vomiting and suffering from diarrhoea.

A densely populated city of some seven million people, Hong Kong is particularly alert to the spread of viruses after Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) killed almost 300 people 11 years ago.

On July 30, the Hong Kong government said it would quarantine, as a precaution, all people from Ebola-infected areas who showed any symptom of the disease such as fever, vomiting or diarrhoea.

Nigeria, along with Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have been hardest hit by the latest epidemic, which the WHO has called the worst outbreak of its kind in four decades.

The most populous nation in Africa, Nigeria confirmed two new cases on Friday of the often fatal hemorrhagic disease, bringing the total number of infections to nine, including two deaths.

As a preventive measure, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended Gambian national airline from flying into the country, alleging “unsatisfactory” measures by the airline to contain the spread of Ebola virus, officials told AFP news agency.

In a letter to Gambia Bird Airlines, it wrote, “NCAA has reviewed the measures put in place by your airline as contained in your letter of 30th July, 2014 and have found these measures unsatisfactory.”

“Consequently, your flights into Nigeria have been temporarily suspended with immediate effect until such a time that you are able to put in place, acceptable and satisfactory measures,” said the letter, a copy of which was sent to AFP.

The Gambian national carrier flies to Lagos twice weekly. It also flies to other African countries in the region: Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Senegal.

Meanwhile, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has said it is to equip health workers in the primary health care centres on relevant information on the Ebola virus disease, and the right tools to work with.

The executive director, NPHCDA, Dr Ado Mohammed, disclosed this during the weekend during a sensitization meeting with chief executive officers and Zonal Coordinators, State Primary Health Care Development Agency.

He tasked the states’ health authorities to be vigilant and to quickly report any suspected case of Ebola virus to the national emergency operation centre.

PoliticsAPC Spokesman Lai Mohammed Arrested by EngrAbiola(op): 7:27am On Aug 09, 2014
As the people of Osun State throng the various polling units to cast their votes today, a premonition of what will happen in the 2015 general polls between President Goodluck Jonathan-led federal government and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is in the offing.

But despite the order of the Osun High Court restraining security operatives from arresting APC leaders, the spokesperson of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, was arrested early this morning.

The spokesman to former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Mr Sunday Dare was also arrested.

A statement by Lai Mohammed’s personal assistant, Mr Williams Adeleye, said he was on the phone with his boss when he heard voices saying “you are under arrest, enter this vehicle.” Adeleye added that repeated calls to his lines went unanswered.

Several attempts by LEADERSHIP Weekend to get Mohammed on his GSM numbers were also not answered at press time. It was further gathered that Mohammed and Dare was arrested in front of the Osun State Governor’s Lodge.

It is an indisputable fact that the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have given their all in terms of political muscle flexing to retain and claim the state. This was evident in their respective rallies held in the state recently.

The level of interest shown so far by the two major political parties in today’s election suggests that it is going to be a fierce electoral battle between incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the APC and Senator Iyiola Omisore governorship candidate of the PDP. Besides, the governorship poll will certainly determine who dominates the 2015 elections.

It also tends to be so because Osun State was the only South-West state where APC won landslide in the 2011 presidential poll. According to the results of the said poll, former Chairman of the Economic andFinancial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who was the presidential candidate of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN now APC) ), defeated President Goodluck Jonathan with 299,711 votes (58.46% of the total votes cast) as against PDP’s 188,409 votes (36.5%).

The ACN further crippled PDP in the 2011 polls by sweeping all the federal legislative seats, both at the red and green chambers of the National Assembly. The major opposition party then swept all the

Senatorial and House of Representatives seats in the state. Senator Babajide Omoworare of the ACN defeated the current PDP governorship candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore with a very wide margin in Ife/ Ijesa senatorial district.

Out of 1,407,222 registered voters in Osun State, a total of 986,117 eligible voters are expected to vote today to elect a new governor for the State.

The 986,117 figure represents the electorate who collected their permanent voter’s card ahead of the expiration of collection of the cards on Monday.

The voting will take place at 3,379 polling points drawn from the 3,010 polling units across the 30 local government councils of the state and Ife East Area office.

No fewer than 65,000 security operatives comprising about 15,000 soldiers, 30,000 policemen, 8,000 operatives of Department of State Security Service and 20,000 members of Civil Defence Corps will provide security during the election.

Already, the state is tensed up due to the high number of security operatives in town.

Aregbesola is of the APC while Omisore belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while the next candidate to the duo is former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade of the Labour Party.

The outcome of last month his governorship poll in the neighbouring Ekiti State, which the incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi of APC lost, to Ayo Fayose of PDP has forced the two parties to go into the bunker strategizing over how to win.

The Ekiti result emboldened the PDP to see it as an opportunity to reclaim the zone it lost in 2007 while the APC abandoned the overconfidence it used to have over the zone to become desperate in its bid to retain the state.

Since its grand rally in Osogbo, the state capital during the week, all APC chieftains including the state chairmen nationwide, all members of the National Working Committee and all political office-holders of the party from the councillors to its members in the National Assembly have remained in Osogbo strategizing over how to win today’s election.

From all indications, the battle is dicey for both APC and PDP because of the calibre of their candidates who are both articulate, and down-to-earth politicians. While Aregbesola could boast of his performance in the last four years, especially, the beautification of the urban centres and rehabilitation of some roads, Omisore is a grassroots politician whose political structure throughout the state is as old as the Abacha political dispensation when he almost became the UNCP Candidate.

Both Omisore and Aregbesola hail from the same Osun East senatorial district, Omisore is from Ife while Aregbesola is an Ijesa man.

It is instructive to note that some issues could work in favour of Aregbesola such as the incumbency factor with some landmark achievements especially the road networks and the reform he brought to the education sector in the state which included the free laptop called Opon Imo for the final year students in all secondary schools in the State. The O-YES programme where he provided jobs for many youths is another factor he is banking on to retain the seat.

The defection of some aggrieved chieftains of the PDP like, the first civilian governor of the State, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, former Chief of Staff to Oyinlola, Mr Peter Babalola and Oyinlola could help him in winning more votes.

lai-mohammed_0

But his opponents are using those factors against him. For example, they accuse him of developing the cities at the expense of the rural areas, they also alleged that he had failed to pay salaries of the civil servants and the pensioners, including the beneficiaries of the job creation, as and when due until of recent when the election was coming closer and his government was able to rise up to the challenge.

As for Omisore, his assets include his political structure which has survived all administrations in the state right from the Abacha era to date. The structure was said to have been used by Chief Bisi Akande when he was asked to step down by the late Chief Bola Ige. The same was reportedly used by Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola who has just defected to the APC.

Omisore is a wealthy politician and coupled with the fact that he is of the ruling PDP at the centre, funding of the poll would not be any problem especially having been a senator twice in the recent past aside from his business connection.

But his main problem is the albatross of the alleged murder of Bola Ige which his opponents always used against him. Oyinlola made use of this during the final campaign rally of the APC in Osogbo. Although the court has discharged and acquitted him yet his cynics would not let him be. No sooner he threw his hat into the ring than the poster asking WHO KILLED BOLA IGE resurrected in the state.

The defection of Adeleke, Oyinlola and Akinbade who were in the PDP during the last general election could deny him of some bloc voting where these chieftains of APC are calling the shots.

Both APC and PDP are desperate to win today’s poll and in the process, they have been trading accusation and counter-accusation about rigging but both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security operatives have assured the populace that today’s poll will be the best election so far. Whatever happens, the election monitoring agents, local and international, journalists and other stakeholders are around to ensure the poll is indeed free and fair.

SportsChika Amalaha Tested Positive Because She Drank ‘Zobo’ - Coach by EngrAbiola(op): 7:36am On Aug 08, 2014
Treasurer of Nigeria Weighlifting Coaches Association, Andrew Ekanem has revealed that Chika Amalaha, who was stripped of her gold medal after testing positive to a banned substance at the just concluded Commonwealth Games, might have allegedly got the prohibited substance from her consistent drinking of a local drink called ‘Zobo’

Amalaha, 16, who won the women’s 53kg competition, provided positive “A” and “B” samples that contained prohibited diuretics and masking agents and had to be stripped of the medal she won. Ekanem believes she was the architect of her own misfortune by drinking ‘zobo’. Ekanem said on Brila FM early today that Amalaha had been warned several times against drinking ‘Zobo’, but all the entreaties fell on deaf ears.

The weightlifting coach alleged further that even the medical team warned her against drinking the local drink at the Abuja camp before the Games, but she always sneaked out of camp to have the drink. While expressing dismay over the fate that befell Amalaha, Ekanem who was close to tears alleged thus: ‘‘It was unfortunate that Amalaha was stripped of the medal she won at the Commonwealth Games, I could recall that after she was warned against drinking ‘Zobo’ after the African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana last May where she won three gold medals, when we returned to Abuja for camping ahead of the Commonwealth Games, she still sneaked out to drink ‘Zobo’ again.’’ Amalaha was Nigeria’s first gold medal winner in Glasgow, equalling the Games snatch record of 82kg with her first attempt before lifting 85kg on her third. According to the International Weightlifting Federation, she was the youngest woman to win a weightlifting title in the Games history.

Meanwhile, after Amalaha was stripped of the medal Dika Toua from Papua New Guinea was awarded the gold medal with the India duo Santoshi Matsa and Swati Singh claiming silver and bronze respectively.

PoliticsUS Wins Legal Control Of Abacha’s Half-billion Dollars Loot by EngrAbiola(op): 7:22am On Aug 08, 2014
On Thursday, the US Justice Department said that it has won legal control of nearly a half-billion dollars worth of corrupt gains hidden in banks by late Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha.

A court judgement on Wednesday gave the US title to more than $480million that Abacha and his associates embezzled and secured in accounts in Jersey, England, Ireland and France.

The US is still seeking control over another four Abacha-tied investment portfolios of $148 million in Britain.

On the basis that the corrupt funds were originally moved through the financial system, the department will seek to have authorities in those four jurisdictions order banks to transfer the money to it.

“General Abacha and others systematically embezzled billions of dollars in public funds from the Central Bank of Nigeria on the false pretense that the funds were necessary for national security

The conspirators withdrew the funds in cash and then moved the money overseas through US financial institutions.

Our goal is to repatriate the recouped funds for the benefit of the Nigerian people” said a rep for the department.

Abacha ruled the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1993 to 1998.
