A Masquerade and six persons have been killed in Okene and Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State respectively by yet to be identified gunmenThe killing in Okene which involved a Masquerade and three of his followers occurred yesterday at Idare district in Okene Local Government Area of the state. Vanguard gathered that the masquerade and three of his followers were gunned down by two men on motorcycles during the “Eche-Anee” festival which is normally celebrated annually by the people of Kogi Central. The source further disclosed that immediately the masquerade and some of his followers were gunned down other people at the scene took to their heels to avoid been attacked. Meanwhile, the state government has banned the festival celebration to avoid further crises. The Government statement issued yesterday by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo warned that, “Any masquerade or masquerades caught parading the street will be arrest and those behind the masquerade.” In another similar development, three members of the Vigilante group in Ofu Local Government Area of the state were allegedly killed by yet to be identified bandits on Monday night at Ahi village. The deceased who were conveying three suspected criminals they earlier arrested who later escaped after the attack were said to have been ambushed by some assailants on their way to Ugwolawo Divisional Police Office at the LGA headquarters. According to a relation of one of the slain vigilante, Musa Abuh said they suspected that there was communication between some people in the community and the bandits; giving them information on the movement of the vigilante group and arrested suspects. “This is a serious setback to the community policing which we all embraced as a panacea to the upsurge of crime in the rural areas” Musa Abuh lamented. Meanwhile, the Administrator of Ofu Local Government Area, Sule Abuhegbiti who confirmed the killing to newsmen said investigation into the matter has commenced in earnest. However, effort to confirmed the two attack from the Police Public Relation officer, Mr. William Aya proved abortive but sources close to Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident saying the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu is on top of the situation.

About 14 years after his installation, the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, on Monday appeared in an Ikeja High Court in a suit challenging his emergence as the paramount ruler of Lagos, saying he is the bona fide monarch. “I am here to justify my appointment, you cannot build something on nothing, it will be broken. “By native law and customs and by law, I am the bona fide Oba of Lagos,” said Akiolu, who was accompanied to the court by 10 white cap chiefs. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akiolu’s installation as the Oba of Lagos is being challenged by Prince Adedoyin Adebiyi and Prince Rasheed Modile, two members of the Lagos royal family. Joined as respondents in the suit are the state governor, the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Prince Babatunde Akitoye and Chief Junaid Eko. Both Adebiyi and Modile are claiming that Akiolu is not entitled to the throne because he is not a member of a ruling royal family by not being a direct descendant of Oba Ado, the first Oba of Lagos. According to the claimants, only members of the Ologun Kutere and Akinsemoyin ruling houses are entitled to the throne. They also alleged that proper customary rules and procedures were not followed when he was appointed as Oba in May 2003. While being led in evidence by his lawyer, Mr Adetokunbo Mumuni, Akiolu told the court the procedure he followed before being installed. “After I made my intention known to my family that I wanted to be Oba of Lagos, I applied for the throne. “In May 2003, the head of the kingmakers and the then Sole Administrator of Lagos Island Council called at my residence. “At that time I was preparing to go to the mosque and I was told that I received a letter from the state government and the State Executive Council. “The letter accepted my nomination that I have been approved to be a worthy successor of the late Oba of Lagos. “It will be exactly 14 years tomorrow (May 23, 2003) that the my appointment was approved. “By the grace of Almighty Allah, there is nothing like rotation in the succession to the throne of Oba of Lagos,” Akiolu said. Before cross-examining Akiolu, lawyer to the claimants, Mr Babatunde Fashanu (SAN), told the court that for the purpose of the trial, Akiolu should be addressed as the defendant and not as the Oba of Lagos while in court. “I apply that all referrals to the defendant as the Oba of Lagos should be expunged from the records of this honourable court. “Within the walls of this courtroom, he is a defendant and when we step out of the courtroom, I will lie down and greet him as ‘kabiyesi’ because I am like a son to him,” he said. Akiolu also told the court that he had a prior relationship with Fashanu’s father when he was working as a lawyer during his early years of legal practice 32 years ago. “I know your father, I used to carry files for him when we were working together.” Fashanu’s request to expunge referrals of Akiolu as Oba of Lagos was, however, not granted by the court. In responding to Fashanu’s question whether proper customary procedure was followed when he became Oba, Akiolu said he was installed according to the customs of Lagos as Oba by kingmakers. “Akiolu is a direct descendant of Oba Ologun Kutere, there is no registered declaration for the throne. “It is the old customs and the recommendations of the Price Commission which is over 100 years ago that is still valid till today.” Akiolu also debunked claims that Akiolu royal family was not one of the ruling houses because it was non-existent. He said: “Despite the letter from Lagos State Government confirming my appointment as Oba and stating that I am from the Akiolu royal family, I want to make it clear that a royal family and ruling house means the same thing. “My appointment as the king is the first time in history that kingmakers will be unanimous in selecting an Oba of Lagos.” Justice A. Candide-Johnson adjourned the case until June 19 for continuation of trial.

WAKE-UP CALL TO NIGERIAN YOUTH!!!! Someone said if you weren't in Minna yesterday for IBB's daughter's wedding, you are just a tenant in Nigeria. The landlords gathered to wine and dine. Someone complained about the number of private jets flown into the city yesterday as the Abuja-Minna road isn't motorable. Another one argued it doesn't matter. It was a class thing and it is rare seeing a JSS1 boy play ludo with someone writing UTME. Someone also wondered why suicide bombers ignored these enemies of Nigeria and decided to attack University of Maiduguri, a citadel of learning where dreams are being built and nurtured. Someone somewhere close to the wedding venue said he strained his eyes looking for the leaking PDP umbrella and the tiny APC broom yesterday and had to go home disappointed when he saw all of them hugging and smiling without talking about their parties. Someone faraway in Abeokuta decided to analyze their sitting positions and nearly ended up in the hospital. His blood pressure rose. Another one, a popular PDP apologist in Enugu, broke down in tears yesterday. He saw 'Bola Tinubu, the man behind his hero's political and electoral fate who still lambasted him days ago in Lagos, seated beside Goodluck Jonathan smiling sheepishly to the cameras. Someone, an unrepentant APC loyalist, saw Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Markafi stand together. He had always prayed for the total collapse of PDP. He couldn't eat yesternight anyway. Someone watched Channels Television news and saw Governor Ganduje and his sworn enemy Kwankwaso seated inches apart. He is still praying to God to wake him from his nightmare. Another one made sure he followed the news on radio waiting for any divisive religious matter to be raised only to hear voices of Bukola Saraki, a muslim, and Yakubu Dogara, a christian, screaming for those expensive wines. He is still changing stations with hopes. Someone checked online media outlets yesternight and saw pictures of Yorubas, Hausas, Fulanis, Igbos all under one roof with their different tribal wears. There was no tribal statement. No tribal war. He broke the screen of his phone. Here we are. Continue defending these people who have divided you along religious, ethnic and tribal lines. Continue with your gullibilty. Continue with your nonsense. What we need is just your brain. Don't bother asking us why. #Copied. Wishing you a lovely Sunday. |
