President Barack Obama slipped into the role of a late night talk show host on Monday, nudging Stephen Colbert away from his perch during an appearance on the comedian’s satirical programme. The president even poked fun at himself in the process. “You’ve been taking a lot of shots at my job, I’ve decided I’m going to go ahead and take a shot at yours,” Obama said before sitting down alone behind Colbert’s desk. “As you know, I, Stephen Colbert, have never cared for our president,” Obama proceeded, pretending to be the comedian. “The guy is so arrogant, I bet he talks about himself in the third person,” he said to laughter and applause. The president has appeared regularly on daytime and nighttime talk shows to reach specific constituency groups, including young people, who are a key Colbert demographics. http://mygramnews.com/2014/12/obama-displaces-comedian-colbert-on-popular-show/ |
The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has instituted a law suit against Lagos state Governor, Babatunde Fashola over the state government’s plan to demolish the Lagos branch of his church, Word of Life Bible Church, situated on Plot 21E, Abdulrahman Okene Close, off Ligali Ayorinde Street Victoria Island Annex. According to court papers obtained by The Nation, Pastor Ayo alleged that after applying for a building plan approval from the state government and it was not forth coming within the regular period, he made due enquires personally by writing several letters and holding meetings with the former and present governors, Bola Tinubu and Fashola respectively but his efforts yielded no results. read more http://mygramnews.com/2014/12/oritsejafor-drags-fashola-to-court-over-plans-todemolish-his-lagos-church/ |
The Federal Government has released the Russian cargo aircraft which was intercepted by operatives of the Nigerian Air Force at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano on Saturday. The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu, announced the decision of the government during a press briefing he jointly addressed with the Defence Attache of France to Nigeria, Col. Mark Hubert, in Abuja on Monday. Amosu said that the Federal Government decided to release the controversial aircraft following a clearance with the French Government that the content of the aircraft belonged to the French military. The CAS said that it became necessary for the government to release the aircraft because of the long healthy relationship between Nigeria and France which according to him remained very cordial. He added that the French had been very supportive to Nigeria and their relationship with the country was valued. He said that security forces at the Aminu Kano Airport had to resort to the standard procedure of conducting checks on the aircraft because it had no clearance to operate at the airport even though the French Government was given an annual block clearance by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to operate in the country. http://mygramnews.com/2014/12/fg-releases-impounded-russian-cargo-plane/ |
A former Nigeria captain, Sunday Oliseh, believes the glory days of the country’s national team will not return unless they “get their house in order.” Nigeria have been on a downward spiral in the past year and capped it all when they failed to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations despite being in a group adjudged as fair. Oliseh who spoke with the BBC Sport said, “We have got technical problems and administrative problems – it is too much for one nation, even if you are Nigeria. “At the moment, it is bleak. We need to face up to the job and get organised.” Oliseh was part of the Nigeria squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and the Olympic gold medal two years later. He also played at the World Cup in 1994 and 1998, helping the Super Eagles to the last-16 at both tournaments. In those competitions, Oliseh played with other great players referred to as the “golden generation” of Nigerian football. Some of those players were Austin Jay- Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Finidi George. http://mygramnews.com/2014/12/oliseh-fears-for-nigerian-football-future/ |
Maku, Wogu lose • Ribadu, Wike, Folarin win Barely four months after joining the Peoples Democratic Party, a pharmacist and an entrepreneur, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, on Monday emerged as the PDP governorship candidate for Lagos State. He defeated a former Minister of State for Defence and Nigeria’s ex-High Commissioner to Ghana, Musiliu Obanikoro, who was touted as the leading contestant in the primary. Agbaje scored 432 votes as against the 346 by Obanikoro. The other aspirants, Babatunde Gbadamosi got 21 votes; Tokunbo Kamson, 46 votes and Adedeji Doherty, 21 votes. The exercise was nearly marred by violence following a controversy which surrounded the number of votes cast by the delegates. When the voting started, the Chairman of the electoral committee, Senator Shehu Kumo, announced that there were 806 delegates. But when votes were being sorted, it was discovered that the number of votes cast were 863. All efforts to get the number of votes and the number of delegates to tally proved abortive but Kumo insisted that the exercise should continue. Amid the resistance by supporters of some of the aspirants, about 60 armed policemen formed a barricade around the ballot boxes and ensured that the counting continued. When tables and chairs were overturned at the centre, Obanikoro immediately stormed out. Immediately after the announcement, Agbaje commended the committee and promised to work with other aspirants. As the tension heightened, about 200 policemen and operatives of the Department of State Service stormed the venue. Agbaje was whisked away before policemen began firing gunshots into the air. It was however victory galore for many of the PDP governors as most of their preferred candidates triumphed during the race in their states. But the Acting Governor of Adamawa State, Bala Ngilari, had a shocker as he was beaten by a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu, at the old Parade Ground, Abuja where the exercise for the state took place. There were however boycotts and protests by many aspirants in states like Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Oyo. http://mygramnews.com/2014/12/966/ |
A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone II, Abuja, has granted an order restraining former President Olusegun Obasanjo from going on with plans to publish or have someone publish on his behalf, his new autobiography titled, ‘My Watch.’ Request for the order was made by a member of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Buruji Kashamu, in an ex parte application. Justice Valentine Ashi made the order on Friday as he agreed with Kashamu’s lawyer, Alex Iziyon (SAN), that part of the content of the book related to the subject matter of the N20bn libel suit instituted by the PDP chief against former President Obasanjo. The court restrained the former President from publishing the book, pending the determination of the libel suit instituted against him. The content of the book was said to be related to a letter dated December 2, 2013, written by Obasanjo to President Goodluck Jonathan, claiming that Kashamu was wanted for drug- related crime in the United States of America. Iziyon had argued on Friday that since part of the content of the autobiography related to the December 2, 2013 letter, which is the subject matter of the libel suit, it was wrong for Obasanjo to be allowed to proceed to comment on, write books about or make publications on the issue yet to be decided by the court. Justice Ashi, in his ruling, restrained Obasanjo from either publishing the book or have it published on his behalf by anybody, pending the determination of the main suit. http://mygramnews.com/2014/12/court-stops-obasanjo-from-publishingautobiography/ |
The Boko Haram sect has reportedly abducted over 20 girls in Lassa, a town in Borno State. Quoting a member of the community, Daniel Ibrahim, SaharaReporters stated that the Boko Haram sect also killed many people, mostly old men and women, before they kidnapped the women. SaharaReporters also stated that a security source confirmed the report. “They [Boko Haram] abducted more than 20 girls from our town and killed many people, mostly old men and women,” the online medium quoted Ibrahim. Ibrahim, who said he survived the attack, revealed that the insurgents had been advancing toward Lassa since late November but had met stiff resistance from local fighters until Wednesday. He said the insurgents attacked the town last Wednesday with a variety of heavy weaponry, including tanks and explosives. They were finally able to overwhelm the local opposition and capture the town. “They burnt almost half of the town before they left. Those of us who were lucky fled, but they massacred aged ones and the younger men they could catch,” the source stated. http://mygramnews.com/2014/12/bharam-abducts-20-more-girls-in-borno/ |
