Histories of the idea of liberalism usually begin in the seventeenth century with the philosopher taken to be its patron saint, John Locke. In the aftermath of the wars of religion, the story goes, liberals waged a battle against the arbitrary powers of the church and absolutist monarchies. Philosophers began to promote the cardinal liberal virtues of toleration, private property and individualism. The Lockean vision of liberal society was one based on consent. Free individuals would accept a social contract in order to protect their natural rights to life, liberty and property. After centuries of struggle with less enlightened doctrines, this vision was institutionalized in the governments and constitutions of many Western (and now non-Western) societies. Former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro has urged his supporters to do their best to ensure President Goodluck Jonathan is re-elected in 2015 as the presidential candidate of the opposition party, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) lacks the capacity to take Nigeria to the promise land. “When Buhari was in his 40’s, he couldn’t govern Nigeria. Buhari was Number 1, a Muslim, Idiagbon Number 2, a Muslim, Chief of Air Staff, Chief of Army Staff, a Muslim. They were all Muslims. We don’t want that kind of Nigeria anymore. We want a Nigeria where everyone will have a sense of belonging. We have seen it all and we know that Buhari does not have the capacity to build Nigeria of our dream,” Obanikoro said. He therefore enjoined his supporters to work hard and ensure victory in the forthcoming elections for Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He also asked his supporters to ensure the candidate of the PDP in Lagos, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, who he lost the PDP primaries to, wins the governorship seat in the state. He urged them to forget the pains of the past and move on with determined zeal ensure victory for the party at all levels. “Let me tell you one of the reasons why we initially agreed to go on. Battle for Oyo Governor’s Office intensifies In this piece, FEMI ATOYEBI examines the issues surrounding the controversial governorship primary conducted by the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State as the race to Agodi Governor’s Office intensifies That the Peoples Democratic Party conducted a governorship primary in Oyo State on December 8, 2014 is no news. Also, the emergence of a former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, as the party’s governorship candidate is no news. But the intrigues thrown up by the primary have changed the political equation in the state in the countdown to the 2015 governorship election. The emergence of Folarin at the former Liberty Stadium, now Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, on December 8, 2014, took not a few by surprise because, hitherto, the Ibadan-born Folarin was largely overlooked as standing no chance in the race. In a masterstroke, Folarin coasted home to victory as the party’s statutory delegates chose him as the party’s candidate even as major aspirants eyeing the ticket, former governor Adebayo Alao-Akala and 47-year-old businessman, Seyi Makinde, kicked. A fresh dimension was added to the race when Alao-Akala dumped the PDP for the Labour Party on whose platform he is set to contest the election. Similarly, the defection of Makinde, who is seen as a young grassroots politician, from the PDP to the Social Democratic Party is seen as capable of diminishing the electoral chances of the PDP in the election. Makinde, who said he would realise his governorship ambition on the platform of the SDP, insisted that none of the aspirants within the PDP and outside it is better equipped to lead Oyo State than him. - See more at: http://nairaland.com/battle-for-oyo-governors-office-intensifies/#sthash.JYky49Ve.dpuf http://nairaland.com/battle-for-oyo-governors-office-intensifies/ |

I lost 3,000 books to Boko Haram – Othman Othman made the declaration while delivering a keynote address, titled Creative writing and the challenges of globalisation – The mediating role of residency, at the 4th anniversary of the Ebedi International Writers Residency in the Oyo State capital. It was a really special collection. Sadly, all the books were vandalised by the insurgents.” Othman said his home was looted and virtually nothing was left behind, in addition to the destruction of his personal library and its priceless cultural contents. I had fully attuned myself to the fact that our Owu retiree soldier and prolific author is an infliction that those of us who share the same era and nation space must learn to endure. However, it does appear that there is no end to this individual’s capacity for infantile mischief, and for needless, mind-boggling provocations, such as his recent ‘literary’ intrusion on my peace. Professor Wole Soyinka today Sahara Reporters Media Perhaps I ought to interrupt myself here with an apology to some mutual acquaintances – ‘blessed peacemakers’ and all – especially in this season of ‘peace and goodwill to all men’. Please know that your efforts have not been entirely in vain. I had a cordial exchange with Obasanjo over the phone recently – engineered by himself, his ground staff and/or a chance visitor – when I had cause to visit his Presidential Laundromat for the first time ever. During that exchange, I complemented him on making some quite positive use of landed property that was acquired under morally dubious circumstances, and blatantly developed through a process that I denounced as ‘executive extortionism’. That obscene proceeding has certainly set a competitive precedent for impunity in President Jonathan’s recent fund-raising shindig, editorialized in THE PUNCH (Dec. 23, 2014) as “Impunity Taken too Far”. So much for the latest from that directions – we mustn’t allow Handing-Over notes between presidents to distract us for too long. To return to our main man, and friendly interventionists, you may like to note that I went so far as to engage him in light banter, stating that some of his lesser sins would be forgiven him for that creative conversion of the landscape – a conversation that he shortly afterwards delightedly shared with at least three mutual acquaintances. I promised a follow-up visit to view some mysterious rock script whose existence, he informed me, was uncovered by workers during ground clearing. The exchange was, in short, as good as ‘malice towards none’ that any polemicist could hope to contribute to the ongoing season of peace and goodwill. Obviously that visit will not now take place, any more than the pursuit of vague notions of some creative collaboration with his Centre that began to play around my mind. That much I do owe you from my report card. Perhaps you will now accept that there are individuals who are born incorrigible but, more importantly, that some issues transcend one’s personal preferences for harmonious human relationships even in a season of traditional good will. The change in weather conditions sits quite well with me however, since we are both acquainted with the Yoruba proverb that goes: the child that swears his mother will not sleep must also prepare for a prolonged, sleepless infancy. The President of Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has felicitated with Christians on the occasion of the Christmas celebration but said the citizenry should be vigilant and secure their environment. The CAN President however expressed optimism that better times were ahead “despite the challenges of fundamentalism, terrorism, natural disasters, disease, epidemics and other forms of societal challenges in the year.” Oritsejafor in his Christmas message issued in Abuja said, “There are signs of hope, both in the Church and in our society.” He said, “I congratulate all Christians on the occasion of Christmas and urge all Nigerians not to lose sight of the challenge of securing their environment even as they rejoice during the celebrations; we must all be security conscious and assist constituted authority in securing our property. “Nigerians must realise the fact that the true essence of this celebration lies in the sacrifices that we make in the interest of a better and more prosperous Nigeria. This season is one that inspires sacrifice which gives hope to the down trodden in our midst. “The joy that Christ brought to the world many years ago through His birth and still brings to our hearts today at Christmas should be shared to all. I remain confident that good will prevail over evil, as we genuinely reflect on these issues and renew our vows to God through the celebration of Christ’s birth at Christmas.” He said 2014 had been a year of mixed fortunes – for individuals, for the Christian family, other faithful and the entire society but that “we have sailed through these trying times to the very moment we have found ourselves at present.” - See more at: http://nairaland.com/oritsejafor-wants-nigerians-to-be-vigilant/#sthash.NTCmU2Cq.dpuf |

ABUJA — With less than two months to the general election, the campaign posters of President Goodluck Jonathan are yet to be mounted in many northern states considered crucial for his re-election victory, concerned loyalists ofthe president have revealed to Vanguard. The situation is in contrast to the pre-2011 season where the promotional materials for Jonathan had sprung up in virtually all the northern states many months to the presidential race. Unlike the situation which presided the last presidential poll, many states appear cautious in openly canvassing support for Jonathan given the preponderance of most of their leaders to throw their weight behind Buhari. The fear in openly identifying with Jonathan, according to competent sources, stems from the fact that some radical elements, who feel disappointed by the present administration’s handling of security challenges in the North-East are on the prowl waiting to unleash violence on suspected backers of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. http://nairaland.com/buhari-vs-jonathan-2015-presidential-unlike-2011-fear-grips-northern-pdp-to-identify-openly-with-jonathan/ |
