Nigerians have been alerted of an alleged infiltration of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC by elements loyal to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Reacting to the nomination of Lagos State University, LASU don, Prof. Abubakar Momoh as the Director General of the Electoral Institute, Afenifere Chieftain and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, in a release issued on behalf of Prince Adedayo Adeyeye Movement (PAAM) Sunday, stated that Prof. Momoh was one of the notable support for Senator Bola Tinubu and governors of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in South West States.
Adeyeye said: “Momoh was one of the partisan elements disguised as Election Observers during the Ekiti State governorship rerun election in 2009, who were caught in Oye and Ifaki-Ekiti, with electoral materials.
“Momoh was caught alongside one ACN chieftain in Lagos State, who was then a Commissioner in the Lagos State Civil Service Commission, Fuad Oki and other chieftains of the party. When they were caught, already prepared election results were found on them with telephone contacts of top leaders of the defunct ACN.”
The PDP governorship aspirant noted that, “Prof. Momoh was also one of the witnesses of the ACN candidate, Dr. KayodeFayemi, current Governor of Ekiti State at the election tribunal.
“He (Momoh) had also served on the Board of Governor Fayemi’s Non-Governmental Organisation, the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD.

Elimination of state of origin and enthronement of state of residence would go a long way to cement relationship in the country, otherwise repatration of destitutes and beggars from state of residence to their states of origin remains legal.

On Wednesday, no fewer than 200 beggars were arrested in and around Anambra state capital by a combined team of social workers and security agents led by the Ministry of Women Affairs, Anambra state.
That day, beggars who ordinarily were “blind,” “deaf” and “dumb”, saw, heard and spoke while running for their dear lives. At Abagana, a blind woman with her guide was arrested. Thesupposedly blind beggar had suddenly “regained” her sight, tearing race andwould in fact have beaten those that came to arrest her but for the timely intervention of some vigilante operatives.
At Amawbia, a man from Nise, who allegedly built a house and trains his children even up to the university education level with proceeds from his begging, was arrested. The man, apparently in his early 70s, claimed that he can’t leave begging until he dies. Hewas, however, picked up by the Women Affairs Ministry team.
At the popular UNIZIK junction and Eke Awka axis, beggars ran as far as their legs could carry them. Two boys, apparently in their mid-twenties, were seen begging with all tenacity of purpose. They were bold.
When the two were accosted by the social workers, they fiercely resisted arrest but for the collective effort of the security operatives. They were well dressed wielding phones and carrying a laminated picture of a woman called Chizoba from Nsukka who was purportedly suffering from stomach cancer. The two boys were begging in the name of this cancer patient who, according to them, was at Enugu.
These “special brand” of beggars had not the least remorse for the trade they had chosen, wondering why on earth anybody should arrest them when they were running a legitimate charity venture registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The two “corporate” beggars gave their names as Anichebe Okwudili from Eziaguin Enugu State and Onyebuchi Ona (who initially gave his name as Ekene) from Udi, Enugu State. They were purportedly begging for certain Humanitarian Welfare Rescue Mission with headquarters in Abuja. However, the documents they wielded while begging bore the name “Good Seed International Association.” They gave the name of their boss as one Mesika who they claimed lives at Enugu and known to every social worker.
On the other hand, they identified their boss at Onitsha as a Pastor with Office atIsabella Hotel in the town. Effort to get the said pastor was, however, still confronting confusion as at the time of filing this report. The man at Enugu switched off after initially begging through phone that his boys be released as his organization is registered by the Corporate Affairs Commission for begging. The beggars said their lowest daily earning is N11, 000 which is usuallydivided among them, the organization and the patients they were begging for.
Confirming the arrest, Director, Social Welfare, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Rose Udeagbara, said the beggars were takenoff the streets during an operation to clear the streets of the capital city of beggars and destitutes but the arrested persons have been sent to the vocationaland rehabilitation centre at Nteje.
Mrs Udeagbara informed that at the vocational centre, the social workers took documentation of the arrested persons to enable them either rehabilitate them in any of the skill acquisition centres in the state or repatriate and reunite them with their families.
She admitted that some will be sent to psychiatric hospital before reintegration.Udeagbara affirmed that the Governor Peter Obi administration, since coming on board seven years ago, has not closed its eyes on any of the sectors or segments of the society, including mad people.
In her remarks earlier, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Lady Henrietta Agbata, insisted that families should takecare of their member, that are challenged mentally or otherwise to avoid beggars constituting nuisance in the state.
Agbata reiterated that Anambra state indigenes are not known for begging andthat most of the beggars came from neighbouring states, influencing Anambra indigenes to start learning to beg.
“You can see that many of these beggars are from outside Anambra mainly Enugu, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom states. We have most people from the Northern Nigeria and other states based on the previous raids; even some came in from Niger Republic.
“They are causing nuisance and littering the streets even when Anambra state indigenes are not used to begging. We would repatriate non-indigenes and rehabilitate those that are in that category by empowering them with skillswithin six months. They should stop molesting people and people should try and contain their family members.”
But Useni Mohammed from Niger Republic, who said he is 16 years, has a father who is a driver at Onitsha that gives him minimum daily target to meet from begging. He said he has a twin sister and that the two are known as”Emeka” and “Amaka” and that theywere born at Onitsha.
Another beggar, Mr Joseph Eze from Achi, Enugu state, informed that he was a businessman based in Yola before he had an accident that forced him into begging sequel to lack of assistance. He appealed for N300, 000 to be given to him by the Anambra state government toget himself fixed in a business but warned that nobody should give him anything less than N300,000 as such would not be enough for him.
Similarly, Alice Okeke, 37, from Nimo, Anambra State and a staff member of Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) who uses her disableddaughter to beg, claimed they got N500 everyday as transport after her sweeping job.

In the heat of the power sector reform back in 2010, the masses thought their prayers for stable power supply had been answered. Their elation knew no bounds because, over the years, they had been used to a culture of darkeness for weeks and sometimes months - with astronomical bills coming their way by the dozen.
Three years after, the story is no different. Consumers still pay through the roof for inadequate or zero power supply with many questions asked but little or nothing by way of answers. phcn-cartoon When the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, came on board, a new tariff was introduced commencing from June 1, 2012, pegged at N500. Before then, Nigerians were only paying a fixed, basic access charge irrespective of electricity consumed.
Today, that fixed charge has been increased to N750 - leaving one question on the lips of many: where is the electricity to justify the hike? Defending the increase, NERC chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi, at a recent media briefing, maintained that the new tariff was fair, reasonable and necessary to guarantee continual improvement in electricity supply to Nigerians. He asserted that power supply had "improved significantly" and the new N750 charge was not too much, being one of the lowest in the world.
But that makes no difference to the masses whose lives have been drastically affected by the increment. Indeed, it runs foul of NERC's initial payment plan which recognised different classes of consumers such as the poor, wealthy and corporate organisations. Pre-paid meters, once believed to be the much-awaited solution to power supply hiccups, have not measured up. Earlier, the Federal Government came out with a policy that the meters be issued free of charge to consumers, but that policy was later reversed and the public constrained to pay.
So the reality of the situation is that today, electricity charges have been arbitrarily hiked while power generation has drastically dropped. Irked by this development, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has rejecting the new tariff, insisting there is no justification for the hike following government's failure to check epileptic power supply and the low earning status of most workers. NLC president, Abdulwaheed Omar, described the tariff as exploitative since the review had not been accompanied by commensurate improvement in power supply: "If anything, electricity service delivery has plummeted over the years, with consumers being compelled to pay exorbitant tariffs for incompetence, poor services and fraud."
He added that the review, whether carried out suddenly or in advance, was without justification or rationale and would negate whatever gains were expected from the much-vaunted power sector reforms. According to the NLC, the multi-year tariff structure, as designed by NERC and tacitly approved by government, only protects the interests of investors in the power sector and has little or no consideration for consumers, most of whom are poor and incapable of paying. Meanwhile, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, which is on the verge of being unbundled, has been accused of fleecing Nigerians of several billions of Naira through obnoxious electricity bills.
Nearly N3.5 trillion is believed to be generated by PHCN annually, most of which is alleged to be misappropriated by officials. Amidst all this, the average household pays between N5,000 and N10,000 monthly as electricity bills despite only having power supply for a week, and sometimes two or three days a month. David Ejike who resides off the Lagos/Badagry Expressway told Saturday Vanguard he is only sure of power supply once a week or an average of 3/4 days a month but continually gets a N6000 bill monthly.
"All our complaints have fallen on deaf ears. You complain, they won't listen. They have marketers with revenue targets running into millions of Naira to be met. At times, electricity bills are sent before the end of the month. Customers are threatened with disconnection if they don't pay on time," he lamented. In Ejike's estimation, the billing system is exploitative and arbitrary. This is worsened by the fact that when the cables are cut and seized due to non-payment, consumers are still expected to pay an extra sum of money for retrieval without which the confiscated cables could get missing.
Another consumer, Kate Omare, who resides in Aguda, Surulere, asserted that PHCN officials were frustrating the pre-paid metering system by deliberately delaying delivery to consumers. "Pre-paid meters will prevent them from cheating and defrauding customers, hence they are blocking the introduction of these meters. At the beginning, it was to be given out free, but now they are saying it will cost between N30,000 and N50,000. Yet one cannot get them."
Indeed, NERC made a U-turn on this when it announced that consumers would now pay for pre-paid meters under the Credited Advance Pay for Metering Implementation, CAPMI, scheme. The pilot initiative will involve about five distribution companies unbundled from PHCN, starting with Eko (Lagos) Ibadan, Benin, Kano and Abuja. With this system, the mantra is that some states such as Abuja will enjoy 24 hours' power supply, Lagos 22, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, Kaduna, Benin and Calabar 20, to be followed by Aba, Nnewi and Onitsha which are business centres. Amidst all this, consumers wait with bated breath for the day power supply will finally be regular and payment equal to services rendered

Three Lebanese suspects, Mustapha Fawaz, Abdullahi Thahini and Tahal Roda, accused of complicity in the illegal importation of arms into Nigeria, yesterday, persuaded the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to transfer them from the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, to Kuje Prison.
The accused persons, who made the application on a day one of them mounted the witness box and narrated before the court how he got involved with the operations of the alleged Lebanon based terrorist organization, Hezbollah, said they no longer feel comfortable being left in the custody of the DSS, alleging interference from foreign agents.

Begging the court through their lawyer Chief Raji Ahmed, SAN, the co-owner of Amigo Supermarket Limited and Wonderland Amusement Park Resort, Mr. Mustapha Fawaz, who is the 1st accused and the 2nd accused, Mr Abdullahi Thahini, told the court that the DSS earlier left them at the mercy of foreign mercenaries who they said interrogated them for 14 days.
They argued that considering their resolve to testify before the court pertaining to their involvement in the activities of Hezbollah vis-à-vis the 16-count terrorism charge preferred against them by the federal government, “we apply to be transferred to a neutral place, possibly the police headquarters or Kuje prison,” they pleaded.
Sequel to a no-objection stance by the defence counsel, Mr. Simon Egede, Justice Ademola Adeniyi, ordered that they should be transferred from custody of the DSS to the prison forthwith, even as he adjourned the case till Monday for the two accused persons to give their own testimony.
Besides, the accused persons, yesterday, told the court that they intend to call a top member of Hezbollah to appear and testifyabout the organization, its operations in Nigeria and their involvement in it.
Meantime, the 3rd accused, Roda, who wasarrested inside the house where a large cache of arms and ammunition were discovered by the Joint Military Task Force, JTF, in an underground bunker at No 3 GayaRoad, off Bompai Road in Kano, in his testimony yesterday, narrated in the open court, how another Lebanese, Abdul Hassan Tahir who is currently at large, told him about a plot to assassinate Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Nigeria.
Roda, told the court though he didn’t believe the plot, he said Tahir, insisted that Hezbollah had already mounted surveillance at the Saudi-Arabia Embassy inLagos with a view to monitoring the movements of the Ambassador.
