ok done thanks ahmedsaniadamu: |
No mostly UX/UI...most times the gigs requires 4-6 connects to apply. I learnt somewhere to always apply early once a job has been posted. Most times I apply to gigs with less than 5 proposals to increase my chances of getting the job but from the look of things it doesn't seem to be working. qtguru: |
Ok boss...Thanks at least I know I'm still on the right track but this buying of connects is really draining me. qtguru: |

TheManOfTheYear:Product design interview mad bro(Europe o coz I don't apply to naija jobs) I mean the task sometimes goes beyond the ordinary. I was given a design task last week to be submitted in 2-3 days. I feel some candidates already submitted but nobody seem to get the scope. I know this because till now the employer hasn't stop adding clues and hints on how to solve the problem. I had to reach to out to few designers that are close so we can work on it together. Till now bros no hope. Another interview like that begins with the design task, then interview with company hr. It was remaining two, one with the lead designer and a junior ux. The last one will be with the CEO. Like I normally do I sometimes check these individuals profile on LinkedIn to know the wereys I'm up against. The lead designer happens to be a chinko babe like that and her profile scares the sh*t out of me. I mean I was just seeing Cambridge, something Harvard I can't even remember. Fast forward to interview day na. Interview with hr and lead designer was the same day, I hour each. To cut the long story short, the chinko babe drill me no be small. As a naija boy, I know I can't carry last so I try giving it all it takes. Sometimes during the interview I will just smile and try not to Bleep it up with my responses but that babe is either a saddist or racist. Why? I've had interviews in the past where the white babe will smile and even joke about my name and country. Now I understand why a naija employer will offer you N70k monthly and their European counterpart go dey beg you with N800-N900k (as long as you are very good). And yes, the job the chinko girl interviewed me for is a remote job in Poland and its 900k monthly. Though I'm confident I will get a job soon. All the interviews and design tasks have done are well documented so I keep working on them. Though design tasks come in different dimensions so it's difficult to really tell what to expect next. Currently, I have one naija job(remote) which I'm using to sustain. If i mention the pay you will weep for me. I remember telling the CEO I'm only doing it to build my resume, work experience and recommendation afterwards. Bottom line bros, no be only you o we all share similar challenges. |
Willmichael:lost the job. Can I reach you on WhatsApp? |
qtguru:Thank you very much for the review boss. I will put in the work and keep you informed |

I'm a self-taught UX/UI designer but I've also gone through Google Professional UX design certification course. I started applying to international jobs last month and since then I've gotten only 3 interviews in few European startups. The problem is I haven't gone past the 2nd stage of each interview process. The interviews and assessments often come in different folds depending on the recruitment process of each company or recruiter. I've watched different interview videos and practiced all possible interview questions. And I barely fail any because I always put my best into each and every interview. Some assessment questions sometime go beyond everything I know as regard UX/UI. I've applied mainly to Internship and Entry level jobs, so I'm definitely not running faster than my shadow. The funny thing is I don't randomly apply to jobs, I always take out time to glance through the job requirements before applying. As regard Naija employers, well majority would love to get the job done for free. It seems most of the them don't really understand the importance of UX when building a product. They think you just get on figma and start doing all sort. During the course of my learning's(and I'm still learning), there was a period I didn't open the figma app at all. I was deeply rooted in trying to understand the basis on how you make choices when selecting the features for a project. Which as far as I know is the basis of UX design. I feel bad haven't failed those interviews but I've not lost hope. I've decided to work on my portfolio for the rest of the month. I want to believe its completely normal. I've also tried freelancing but I've only been comfortable with upwork. I got a $30 job once (All l ever did) which i think earned me a verification badge I guess. I'm not exaggerating but I would have spent close to and if not more than 400 connects applying to jobs still no joy. At some point, I was worried but lately I had to let the thought slide. I want to believe there are nairalanders that I've been through similar experiences. I will also love to know if there's something I'm not doing right. Please help a brother. |
