Amosun has finally waved Governorship Bye-Bye He made the worst choice of his entire life! Politics is a game of compromise. ACN gave you the highest position despite having a long lists of Gubernatorial Aspirants. They 'Imposed' you on their people, and also made 4 of your followers to be House of Assembly members. What else do you want? |
2011: Senator Ibikunle Amosun Dumps ACN, Joins CPC | Print | E-mail Written by Olayinka Olukoya, Abeokuta Saturday, 12 February 2011 The governorship candidate of Action Congress of Nigieria (ACN) in Ogun State , Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on Friday dumped the party for the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). Speaking with Saturday Tribune, Amosun’s media Aide, Alhaji Bola Adeyemi, in a telephone interview, confirmed the development, saying that circumstances surrounding his action were beyond his control. Adeyemi said Amosun’s defection was as a result of the hard stance of ACN leadership on some party issues. He said, “Amosun was ‘stripped naked’ as the leadership of the party gave him only the governorship slot while all other elective posts were given to a faction of the party who were members of old Action Congress (AC) that formed ACN with a faction of ANPP where Senator Ibikunle Amosun originally belonged.” Adeyemi said that some of the candidates presented to INEC were unknown personalities who could not win election, but were favoured by ACN leadership at the expense of credible and sellable ones. He contended that the leadership of the party had it in mind to impeach him after six months in office. “They gave him only four House of Assembly members, no Senate or House of Representatives seat and the deputy governor, Prince Segun Adesegun, was also imposed on him. All they want is to strip him naked, they don’t want him to have a say in the government, they want him to be a toothless governor,” he added. Efforts to speak with the leaders of the party in Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba and the Secretary of the party, Alhaji Abimbola Awofeso, were futile as sources close to them claimed they were attending a meeting. Meanwhile, the leadership of the ACN in the state may replace Amosun with Honourable Ishiaq Abiodun Akinlade, a member of the House of Representatives representing Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency of Ogun State. Reacting to the development, National Publicity Secretary of the ACN, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, said it could not be true that Amosun had defected from the party. “I don’t think it is correct, that cannot be true, the party is unaware of that,” he said. |

5 killed in Ekiti over site for varsity | Print | E-mail Written by Sam Nwaoko, Ado-Ekiti Friday, 11 February 2011 FIVE people were killed, on Thursday, while many others were injured in Ikole-Ekiti, in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, when a protest in the town over the location of one of the nine new federal universities went awry. Nigerian Tribune gathered in the town that the march started as a peaceful protest around Ikole town over the announcement by the Federal Government in the media, on Wednesday, night, that the federal university meant for Ekiti State would now be sited in Oye-Ekiti as against an earlier announcement that the university was meant for Ikole-Ekiti . Witnesses told the Nigerian Tribune that the protest, which saw people of different ages and sexes take to the streets, started peacefully at about 7.30 a.m. before the arrival of a detachment of policemen who allegedly shot and killed two of the protesters instantly at Iloka area of the town. The killing caused confusion among the protesters and the people of the community, in response to the action, attacked and burnt the Idi-Ose police station in the town along with two cars and three motorcycles parked on the premises of the police station. Nigerian Tribune gathered at the scene that the bodies of two of the victims were taken away by the fleeing policemen, who were members of the Swift Response Squad (SRS) of the state police command, in their van, while two others were seen at the mortuary of the State Specialist Hospital, Ikole, where they were deposited. The town was covered in smoke as large bonfires were ignited in several parts of the town by the angry protesters while they blocked most of the roads, thereby preventing travellers from Abuja and other parts of the country from driving through the town. |

What started as a peaceful protest over the purported relocation of the new federal university in Ekiti State from Ikole to Oye, turned bloody after two of the protesters were shot dead. The protest, which involved people of different ages in Ikole, started around 7:30 am. But the arrival of a detachment of policemen attached to the Swift Response Squad (SRS), charged the atmosphere. The policemen shot and killed two of the protesters at Iloka area of the town. Following the killings, the protesters attacked and razed down the Idi-Ose police station. Two cars and three motorcycles parked within the premises were also destroyed and burnt. The bodies of the deceased were allegedly taken away by the policemen, who retreated when the people confronted them. The protesters lit bonfire and blocked most parts of the town thereby preventing travellers to and from Abuja from driving through the town. Governor Kayode Fayemi sued for peace and called on the people to remain calm. He described the announcement of Oye as the site of the new university as an attempt to undermine the authority of the state government. Fayemi attributed the latest crisis to the subterranean moves of some politicians from the state who are using their political connection with President Goodluck Jonathan to throw the state into chaos ahead of the the general elections. Fayemi urged Jonathan to respect the principles of federalism, due process and the rule of law. He described Ekiti as part of the Nigerian federation which should not be on fire because of the politics of the elections. The governor said Ikole remains the location of the university as announced by his administration last November, saying the purported announcement of Oye as the site of the university would not be allowed to stand. Fayemi said the latest crisis is not a fight between the two communities of Oye and Ikole. The governor displayed expended live bullets used by riot policemen before reporters. He said they were brought to his attention by Ikole community leaders. He described the shooting of defenceless protesters as "unacceptable and unnecessary". Fayemi met with the leaders of the two communities who were led to his office by the caretaker chairmen of Oye council, Mr. Akindele Ogungbuyi and Ikole council, Chief Biodun Akin-Fasae. "I have received no information on the relocation from the President, the Minister of Education, the Minister of State for Education. Whoever is purporting that the university has been moved from Ikole is only following the figment of his imagination. "This is an attempt to undermine the authority of this state; the pronouncement had been made on the location by the state government long ago and if there will be any change, it will certainly come from Ekiti State government. "It (the relocation) is null and void as far as we are concerned. This university is for our people and we must have a say on where it will be located and how it should be run. We shall not allow our people to be distracted. "These elements are behind this because of their vanishing interests and whether they like it or not, they will be gone in April". The governor also appealed to the people of Ikole to be calm. He warned them against venting their anger against the regent of the town whom he said is not opposed to the university being sited in her domain. Fayemi said he had been in touch with Jonathan adding that he was ready to visit Abuja to ensure that proper things were done to prevent the breakdown of law and order in the state. The Ikole council boss Akin-Fasae said it was the rumour of the relocation that prompted the protest alleging that the policemen who fired the gunshots that killed the people came from outside his council area |

Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN) Three respected lawyers, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Mr. Emeka Ngige, (SAN) and Mr. Bamidele Aturu yesterday described the plot to ‘promote’ the Court of Appeal President Justice Ayo Salami to the Supreme Court as “an act in extreme bad faith.” Sagay, Ngige and Aturu, in a joint statement, said the plot, if allowed to succeed, would weaken the judiciary. The statement reads: “The attempt by the Chief Justice of Nigeria to remove the Hon. Justice Ayo Isa Salami from the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court is an act in extreme bad faith, which will weaken the Judiciary and compromise its integrity, dignity and effectiveness. “When the Court of Appeal was first established in 1976, a Supreme Court Judge in the person of the Late Hon Justice Dan Onwura Ibekwe was posted to head the Court as President. When Hon. Justice Dan Ibekwe died in office, another Supreme Court Judge in the person of Hon. Justice Mamman Nasir, who was earlier posted to the Court of Appeal as Deputy to Hon. Justice Dan Ibekwe, was appointed to replace him. It was after Justice Nasir’s retirement, that a serving Justice of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Mustapha Akanbi, who was more than qualified to be appointed a Supreme Court Judge, was appointed President of the Court of Appeal. He was succeeded in 1999 by Hon. Justice Umaru Abdullahi. “It is important to stress the fact that Justice Umaru Abdullahi was also very qualified to be a Supreme Court Judge, before he was appointed President of the Court of Appeal. “Hon. Justice Umaru Abdullahi was in 2010 succeeded by Justice Ayo Isa Salami. Again as in the cases of the other holders of the office of President of the Court of Appeal, he was more than qualified to be appointed Justice of the Supreme Court at the time of his appointment. The following Justices of the Supreme Court were not only his juniors at the Court of Appeal, but he in fact recommended some of them for appointment to the Supreme Court. “These include: The Hon. Justice Olabode Rhodes-Vivour, the Hon. Justice Suleiman Galadima. It is instructive to note that both Hon. Justice Isa Salami, President of the Court of Appeal and Hon. Justice Aloysius Iyorgyer Katsina-Alu were classmates at the Nigerian Law School and were called to the Bar on the same day, namely, 28th June 1968. So too was Hon. Justice Dahiru Musdapher. Hon. Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar was called to the Bar on 26th June 1967. Apart from the three Justices named above, Justice Isa Salami is senior at the Bar to all other members of the Supreme Court. It is therefore invidious to expect him to take his queue at the Supreme Court behind them. “Although technically, the President of the Court of Appeal and a Justice of the Supreme Court are supposed to be equal in status, the President of the Court of Appeal is higher in status because he has vast executive and administrative powers, which the ordinary Supreme Court Justice does not have. Effectively, the President of the Court of Appeal is next in rank and authority to the Chief Justice of Nigeria. “To establish that the practice of posting a Supreme Court Justice to head the Court of Appeal in Nigeria was not an accident or a fluke, but a deliberate matter of policy, we wish to point out that on the 28th of April 1972, the Hon. Justice Charles Olusoji Madarikan left the Supreme Court on appointment as the President of the then Western State Court of Appeal. Consequently, the line of seniority between a Justice of the Supreme Court and a President of the Court of Appeal is clear.” |
