There is usually a flat 1500Naira for international ATM withdrawals and 3AUD charged by the OZ bank whose ATM machine I used. From my experience living elsewhere, I think there are slight differences in the exchange rate across banks. For instance, GTB has been rumored to have slightly higher rates.
Rumored? Rumored!!! angry
That darn bank will cut your head with machete!
Bossladymo, have your internet banking active on all your accounts so you can transfer to any bank's card with ease but know this, a Visa card will incur less charges than a master card and Diamond/Zenith charges are more reasonable than GTB.
So when you add Diamond's good rates and the fact they favour Visa cards vrs GTB rates and the fact the favour Master cards, the disparity in rates become more pronounced.

Has anybody bought PTA here?

Diamond says they can't sell to me as I don't have a visa label...even though I informed them Aus doesn't make it compulsory to have one.
that isn't even the problem, CBN rules say PTA can only be sold to someone who has a return ticket(I assume you have just one way bah)
Just buy minimal usd, Thats what I'm doing

Does anyone know the current exchange rate GTB charges to the AUD?

Na God I take beg you, no use GTB oh! Those guys are not smiling. If you have a diamond bank acct, you will get lower rates and better card fees.

my people please i have been trying to get a return ticket from Lagos to Sydney but the price i am seeing online for a family of four is really crazy. Please is there any one who has gone through Asia i.e from Lagos to Malaysia and then to Australia. I don't mind exploring this route if someone conversant with the route can explain it well to me. I understand there are several low cost Asia carriers that ply the route to Australia. Please anyone with details i would appreciate. Would i require transit visa to transit through Malaysia and how much would it cost

Keep your commendation to people who kept this thread going, starting a thread means nothing if i don't contribute meaningfully to people's questions. I take no credit for that.

You are just too chicken to use that patronizing commendation to cover up your silliness.

So, lets all lay down our atomic weapons, kiss and make up. And focus on that far, far land they call Australia.

its really boggles the mind when you hear people talk like that is all. Same person says I have no job, but God will watch over and protect Nigeria/Nigerians, HELLO!!! You still have no job! And it wasn't God you elected president/governor!

Thank you for that explanation. All you said is right. Nigerians were created by God and he will not let them down. we have been in a situation more dangerous than now during military regime and we all survived it and many people keep on keeping on. Some white peolple still leave their country and working, living comfortable in Nigeria.
this is exactly why we will fail as a country.
So satan created Afghanistan and Syria?
Olumbaolumba created Yemen, Somalia and the likes?
Which god are you refering to by the way? The Nigerian one of bokoharam that they are so willing to slaughter for? Or the one of that pastor in blings who used your money to acquire a private jet so he could use it to ferry your money to South Africa?
Nigerians are sooo gullible and easily deceived.
In my time in the industry, I have seen all comers try to launder money, men of the cloth, men of the turban and men in suits and ties, there are no saints here, only sinners! Lucky for you that you are clueless about it, I am not, its the life I have lead for 8years now.
Gogochocolate, I would love to tell you how on point you are, only you have no idea how deeply it goes, the rot in our system!
Anyways, for does who would put their trust in the religious sanctity of their leaders, I can only wish you guys goodluck in febuhari!(hehehehe, yeah, I couldn't resist that), but I would sooner live under a gay president who professes no faith than stay in this den of suffering and smiling sheep Nigeria is minting on a daily basis!
There is a God, and I believe in him fiercely! But I also believe he left Nigeria a while ago and now resides in Australia, Canada, America, UAE and the likes. Their quality of life attests to the fact God is there, ours attests to the fact that.... I won't even bother to finish that statement for you man

Kokolobi, leaving Nigeria exposes people to various global opportunities available globally. Several years ago, i got a stable job and refused to go for a masters in engineering abroad and that is a mistake that has hunts me till date. My classmates whose parents had vision pushed them to go and acquire knowledge first and come back later for money . Some went as far as getting Phd's in various fields of engineering. To me then, it looked like they were foolish but today i feel i am at the silly one. Some got jobs excellent jobs in global corporations round the world. Some of them earn crazy salaries today . They are both rich and fulfilled and leading in their various fields of endeavor. Have you tried looking for a top class job where you realize that your competitors for the same job have attended various conferences, training globally and you have one Nigeria Certificate in your bag hoping to get the job. I realized that one mistake people can make is limiting your world view to Nigeria. It is one of the worst thing that can happen to any young man. Look at most people in Nigerian government you will see that the key ones are those who have western worldview and education. For you to see global opportunities you must immerse yourself in a global competitive environment and get yourself to compete with the best. Nigeria has a way of stagnating one if you are not careful. Have you lost your Job in Nigeria and tried getting one again . It is very difficult because the opportunities are very limited.
lemi tell you my story
young engineering grad who could not find an engineering gig, since I was good with number, I took this finance analyst role when it came up and you know what I have learnt?
Me, my colleagues, we are all petrified of loosing this job! After 8years, you want more! More in earnings, more in responsibilities, more in life experiences, just more! But you can hardly get that here! Everyone says how lucky you are to even have the one you do.
So this colleague of mine, real smart dude thinks his certificates will sell him in Nigeria, he starts to antagonise the boss, thinks with his wealth of experience and masters degree, another job was just waiting to be had. Anyways, boss engineers his sack. Two/three years ago. No job. Wife's left him, landlord's left him, car's left him, where are the vacancies man!huh
Like you said man, loosing your job on these shores is a nightmare situation. Ofcos you can lose a job anywhere in the world, but the ability to find something that gives you something akin to the dignity you had before, it could be a pipe dream here man!

So I leave! Now! On my own terms!
If Nigeria gets better, all of us leaving now will return! And take your jobs from you! Cos we shall be better qualified, and better exposed! If it doesn't, well screw all of you that stayed men!
Australia isn't our home land, if somewhere else is better tomorrow, that is where we will go, that is what it means to have a worldview.
This world is your home, go where its happening and you will be appreciated.

Ladies and gentlemen, I jet off 4th February to my base in Perth!
It hasn't been easy in Nigeria, life!
A country where nothing works, my prayer is for my kids to never have to go through what I went through to get where I am.
Anyways, thanks to all who started and kept this forum running, the dictator justwise(take a joke for once in your life man), my mortal enemy jenny(gone offline, still with us in spirit), bossladymo and all the others to numerous to mention.
its a long trip and an even longer life plan(2years msc at my age no b beans men), but having waited for sanity to come to Nigeria, and with no end to that wait in sight, I now leave that wait to more able people like that character that says husband and wife for your unborn children is one of the reasons to stay and wallow in the mediocrity my country has become.
I'm so fecking excited, this is probably the biggest life decision I will ever make, but its time to leave my comfort zone, do something new everyday of my life and actually live!
I will always come here to update all of you of the wonders my eyes will see from the moment I arrive and as I tour Australia,
Viva Oz...

Another advice for people coming over here. If you have any medical (especially dental issues) please get it treated and sorted out in naija before coming over NO MATTER HOW EXPENSIVE it may seem. Cost of dental services here is killing. Imagine a lot of my asian friends having to defer their dental checkups and treatments till school holidays so that they can get cheaper services back home. As has been suggested, if you can stay clear of obtaining a credit card. Banks here have a way of making money out of you when you get one. For those coming to Sydney, get ready to hustle for jobs you probably didnt envisage yourself doing. Job opportunities are getting tighter by the day. For the guys, buy a clipper and learn how to shave yourself (or get someone to teach you). you can potentially save a couple of bucks that can be of great help towards other necessities like accomodation and transport.
omo!
Thanks for this info men, lemi go and scatter my employer dental plan now here in naija before jet out men.
but seriously tho, cost isnt an issue for me, can I upgrade my school negotiated health plan to cover dental matters too? Cos while I hate visiting the dentist, one of the 1st things I wana do when I land is get a total health make over! No be only we politicians foreign health checks good for na! Abi?

Hmmm....imagine! I feel it all depends on self-control though. Where most people gork is where they spend money they don't habe, just because it is available on their credit card. I know people who are not in any debt (except of course the unavoidable mortgage)...cos they treat their credit card like a debit card. They don't spend what they don't have in their account, and they pay up on time to avoid the interest accruing on it.
true
been a banker/finance advisor for 8years now, your credit is as bad as you make it.
credit cards are actually very vital for credit rating tracking in mature economies, not nigeria.
take one, buy small(and I mean small vital) stuff with it!
You have to actually use it to get the benefits of the ratings that come with it. Then be seen to be paying it off properly and promptly.
Its one of the 1st things I would advise anyone to get once you leave these shores, IF YOUR HEAD IS SCREWED ON RIGHT THAT IS!!!

Both of you are correct but i will still maintain my word, if i am in her shoes with all this millions am hearing i will not think of leaving this sweet country. I also want to travel because i dont have job if not, i cant go to a foreign land and start life afresh. How many years remaining for me on earth. I have seen people who won american visa and still ignore it that they are better off in Nigeria. In your university count how many lecture you have, most of them studied abroad but they are living in Nigeria, you didnt ask them why because you want quality education for your children while some even have children in abroad and bring them back to Nigeria for quality training. Even if i eventually travel, its for temporary though.
