Since you broke up, your stomach has felt like a hollow pit of emptiness, but you still can’t work up an appetite; your heart feels as if it’s clamped in a vice and you haven’t slept a wink all week. We’ve all been there before and there’s no question about it: losing the love of your life is a miserable experience. But it’s time to stop romanticising the past and agonising over what you’ve lost on the outside, because the real pain is coming from inside your head. The brain hates being dumped. The same area that’s active when you’re in physical pain also goes haywire when you suffer personal rejection, says psychiatrist Dr Marcelle Stastny – evidence, she says, that your head is the one telling your body that being dumped hurtsand not the other way around. When you’re in love, certain areas of your grey matter are awash in dopamine and oxytocin, hormones that give you feelings of pleasure and contentment, says Stastny. But when your love is lost, so to speak, your supply of these natural feelgood chemicals dries up, leaving you more vulnerable to stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Under normal circumstances, your brain churns out cortisol, adrenaline and other stress hormones in response to a threatening experience. In limited quantities and the right context – like when an overtaking car nearly takes your bumper off on the freeway – these hormones help you react quickly to dangerous situations. The problem is that the organs responsible for producing them can’t always tell the difference between a stimulus that’s life threatening and a stimulus that’s emotionally threatening. What’s more, emotional threats like heartbreak tend to last longer than the physical variety. As a result, these hormones accumulate and can become harmful to your health. An overabundance of cortisol, for instance, tells your brain to send more blood to your muscles, causing them to tense up for swift action. But you’re not running anywhere or hitting anything. As a result, you’re plagued with swollen muscles that can cause headaches, a stiff neck and that awful squeezing sensation in your chest. Cortisol also diverts blood away from your digestive tract, leaving you with some serious gastrointestinal unpleasantness. And to make matters even worse, an overabundance of stress hormones can suppress your immune system, making you more vulnerable to infections – hence the all-too-common post relationship health meltdown. The precise way your body will react to a break-up is similar to the way your body reacts to stress, says Stastny. So if you have a sensitive stomach, you could be prone to cramps, appetite loss or diarrhoea. If you have asthma, you might reach for your pump more often as stress hormones send your bronchial tubes into overdrive. And if you happen to have an addictive personality, you may feel as shaky as a heroin junkie in rehab because the area of your brain that processes cravings and addictions is also activated by emotional loss, according to recent research by the US Albert Einstein College of Medicine. How to deal with heartbreak The good news: although you may feel emotionally trampled for a while still, you can do something to ease your physical pain – and we don’t mean late-night clubbing, pizza binges or other indulgences. Instead, try de-stressing herbal remedies like kava-kava and a good B-vitamin complex or, better yet, teach yourself some relaxation techniques like deep breathing to calm your nervous system. You can also curb those wild stress hormones by dragging yourself to gym for some aerobic exercise, Stastny advises. Working out prompts your brain to release uplifting endorphins. And take a friend with you: camaraderie can induce a much-needed boost in your dwindling oxytocin levels. “One thing you should avoid doing is locking yourself in your room and hiding from the world,” says Cape Town-based psychologist Mark Connelly. “Turning into a hermit will only make things worse.” He advises getting back into some of your favourite pastimes and activities, since doing anything enjoyable can help rev your brain’s dopamine system. If you can’t dissociate your old passions from time spent doing things with your ex, take it as an opportunity to try something new: take a drawing class or join a jogging group – you’ll never bump into that lazy slug there. As Connelly says: “Whatever clears the mind could actually cure the body.” Wallowing is one way we work through what went wrong… If theories of evolutionary psychology hold true, drawn-out pity parties began as a defence mechanism that kept our female ancestors from exposing themselves to further hurt by jumping into the next Neanderthal’s cave too quickly. Since then, wallowing has also become a tool we use to keep love alive – in our minds, at least. Sifting through old photos makes you feel linked to your ex, even if you no longer see him. And gorging on sad, heartbreak-heavy movies and songs makes you feel understood and not so alone. “one benefit of self-pity is that when you wallow, you tend to go over (and over)what you’ve done well – and what you could have done differently,” says Cape Town-based psychologist Mark Connelly. “And that could prepare you to handle things better in your next relationship.” Why we cry The biology behind the "snot en trane": Crying is healthy. When we’re severely overwhelmed, we can’t help but weep, says neuropsychologist Dr Jodi de Luca. Our bodies use crying to defuse bottled-up stress that can wreak havoc on our immune systems. Tears Attract Kindness It’s likely that human tears evolved so we could send out a clear non-verbal message: I need attention! So, De Luca says, “They elicit a sympathetic response in others.” It’s A Girl Thing Young males and females cry roughly the same amount, but one biological reason grown women cry more than men: after puberty, women’s bodies contain much more of the hormone prolactin, which is a main ingredient of emotional tears. So, experts infer, women are able to form and shed tears at a much faster and more frequent rate |
Many would call it a leap of faith, some service to humanity, while others see it as plain stupidity for former NFL Star Jason Brown to give up his career for a dream, but he is convinced it was the right thing to do. The 31-year-old NFL Star, who was once ranked one of the best players in the league and consequently offered a $35 million contract to play for the St. Louis Rams, gave all up to start a farm near his home in North Carolina, growing sweet potatoes and distributing the crop among the poor. Read more from CBS. When Brown first decided to make the move back to his home county of Louisburg, his agent told him that he was making the biggest mistake of his life. But he was convinced that this was the right thing to do. “I looked right back at him and I said, ‘No, I’m not. No, I’m not,’” Brown said. “God revealed to me that he had something greater in store for me and that my family should move back to my home state of North Carolina and start a farm,” Brown wrote on his website. “This really caught us by surprise because we knew nothing about farming. Yet, out of obedience, we started looking for available farmland.” Despite never have done farming work a day in his life, Brown ended up buying a 1,000-acre property. He and his wife Tay named it ‘Fruits First Farm’, making a promise that his people would receive the first fruits of whatever is produced from the land. He then watched a ton of tutorials on YouTube, got a bunch of advice from local farmers, and started cultivating sweet potatoes and cucumbers on his plot. He put in years of work to restore the land to arable condition, and recently gave away his first successful crop – 100,000 pounds of sweet potatoes. “When you see them pop out of the ground, man, it’s the most beautiful thing you could ever see,” he said. |
A Saudi man has divorced his wife after she ignored his Whatsapp messages despite reading them. The husband, in his 30s, was frustrated by his wife’s seemingly endless interest in using her phone for chatting with friends and family. “She spent most of her time on the phone to the point that she neglected looking after their home and taking care of their child,” he said. On asking why she didn’t answer him or acknowledged his messages, the wife said that she was busy talking with her friend. The man claimed that his wife is too busy with her friends to answer his messages. He claimed that his best efforts to find remedy to the situation has failed as his wife needed to be on her smartphone to keep in touch with her family and friends. “I sent her messages on Whatsapp and knew she had read them because of the latest update on the application but still she didn’t answer him or acknowledged his messages,” he was quoted as saying by the Gulf News. A recent survey has seen a rise in the number of divorce cases because of social networking sites. A 2011 UK survey by Divorce Online, a legal services firm, says more than a third of divorce cases contain the word Facebook |
Getting a tooth extracted is never a fun occasion, what with the massive needle, the dribbling and the general indignity of it all. And that’s just for one tooth. Now imagine if you had to have over 100 teeth pulled out. That’s what faced one little girl, who presented at the dentist with 202 teeth fighting for space in her mouth. The seven-year-old from New Dehli in India visited All India Institute of Medical Sciences where Dr Ajoy Roychoudhary, head of oral and maxillofacial surgery spoke about her situation: ‘It was shocking to see such complex situation in the minor’s mouth,’ he said. ‘Normally we see a few abnormal teeth-like structures in such patients; 202 of them inside the mouth of a seven-year-old is shocking. Our prime task was to get rid of it.’ The girl was found to be suffering from compound odontoma – when a complex tumour forms of normal dental tissue that has grown in an irregular way. She had to endure two hours of surgery to remove all of the extra teeth. Dr Roychoudhary explained that the operation was very delicate as a jaw fracture would have led to permanent deformation. According to the girl’s family, she is recovering well and is able to chew again |
The Obama administration started 2012 with an important rule change that will reduce the time that the spouses and children of undocumented immigrants are separated from their citizen relatives while applying for legal status. Latino and Hispanic groups, immigration lawyers and immigrant advocates praised the move. The change eliminates the requirement that illegal immigrants leave the United States for long periods before they can ask the government to waive its ban on legally re-entering the U.S. The ban typically lasts 3-to-10 years, depending on how long the undocumented immigrant has stayed in the United States without the government’s permission. The new rule would allow family members of U.S. citizens to petition the government for the so-called hardship waiver before the undocumented immigrant returns home to formally apply for a U.S. visa. Once waivers are approved, immigrants can apply for green cards. The net effect of the change is that families will not endure long separations while immigration officials are reviewing their cases. Separations that lasted years now will take only weeks or less. Only immigrants without criminal records can apply for the waiver. See Also:Explaining the Filibuster Rule Change of 2013 Before the change, applications for hardship waivers could takes as long as six months to process. Immigration officials believe that the processing time could drop to a matter of days once the change takes effect. Under the old rules, the government received about 23,000 hardship applications in 2011 from families that faced separations. About 70% were granted. Continue Reading Below Because the administration is changing an administrative rule and not U.S. law, the move does not require the approval of Congress. Alejandro Mayorkas, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services director, said the move underscores “the Obama Administration’s commitment to family unity and administrative efficiency” and will save taxpayers money. He saidthe change would increase the “predictability and consistency of the application process.” The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) applauded the change and said it “will give countless American families a chance to stay together safely and legally.” Hard numbers are difficult to get, but based on census data and anecdotal evidence, hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens are married to undocumented immigrants, many of them Mexican and Latin American. Many of those families are likely now to come forward and stop living in the shadows. “Although this is just a small part of dealing with the dysfunction of our immigration system, it represents a significant change in the process for many individuals,” said Eleanor Pelta, the AILA president. “It’s a move that will be less destructive to families and bring about a fairer and more streamlined waiver process.” Pelta said she knows of applicants who have been killed while waiting for approval in dangerous Mexican border cities that are riddled with violence. “The adjustment to the rule is important because it literally saves lives,” she said. The National Council of La Raza, the nation’s most prominent Latino civil rights group, praised the change, calling it “sensible and compassionate.” Republicans criticized the rule change as politically motivated and further weakening of U.S. law. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, said the president had “granted back-door amnesty” to potentially millions of illegal immigrants. Latino and Hispanic groups have criticized the Obama administration for aggressively pursuing deportations during its first three years. A solid majority of Hispanic voters has favored Obama in election polls taken during 2011, though many of these same voters have expressed disapproval of his deportation policies. Obama won two-thirds of the Latino vote in 2008, and it figures to be the country’s fastest-growing voting bloc for the 2012 elections. Latino voters are especially critical in swing states such as Florida, Colorado and Nevada. Obama had campaigned on implementinga comprehensive immigration reform planduring his first term. But he said problems with the worsening U.S. economy and stormy relations with Congress forced him to postpone plans for immigration reform. In 2011, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the administration would use more discretion before deporting undocumented immigrants. The aim is to concentrate on immigrants will criminal records rather than those who have violated only immigration laws. |
Some people have a gene defect in the co-receptor for HIV and live a completely normal life. This gene defect is probably most common among people living in Northern Europe. “Just like the Norwegian army manages perfectly well even though a little handgun goes missing, the body manages without the CCR5 receptor,” explains Kvale. Paradoxically, the defective gene does not make you ill, but prevents you from contracting HIV. Since the CCR5 gene is non-functional, the HIV virus cannot bind itself to it. And it is perhaps here that the key to overcoming the virus lies hidden. By genetically manipulating this gene in HIV patients and making it defective, researchers can perhaps eradicate the virus. “We have two copies of every gene,” says Kvale, and continues, “People with defects in the co-receptors in both genes do not become infected by HIV. Those who have one healthy and one defective gene are infected more slowly and contract a HIV infection that develops far less rapidly. The virus that disappeared The goal is to find a cure for HIV. And this is no longer a Utopian dream, according to Kvale. One possible path is by genetically manipulating the stem cells in the bone marrow of a HIV-positive person so that they acquire the gene defect that gives protection against HIV. The case of “The Berlin patient” is unique in HIV research. This relates to a HIV patient who actually got rid of the infection. The patient was HIV positive, and was also stricken by leukemia. As part of his cancer treatment, he underwent a bone marrow transplantation. After being treated with large doses of cytostatic drugs and radiation to kill the cancer cells, he received bone marrow transplanted from a healthy donor. The donor belonged to the small percentage of people who possess the above-mentioned co-receptor with a defective CCR5 gene. The healthy bone marrow with the defective gene was transplanted into the patient, and the doctors stopped giving him HIV medication. And the result? The HIV virus disappeared. |
