As the countdown to the most anticipated match between Nigerian vs Argentina ticks away. A crucial match and a must win for Nigeria to qualify for the round of 16. Hmmm! a scenario where a pastor near our home, unlike every other tuesdays where his church programes starts by 6 to end 7pm. hmm, but the case of today was a different case he started at 4pm and ended at 5:20pm, i think people of Nigerians are very patriotic and so loving. There is more to football than we think. up super eagles.

SOCCER IS IDOLATRY
Exodus 20:2 “….Thou shall have no other gods before me” Idolatry is the worship of a deity (demon/person) or the devotion or commitment to a concept or device originated by that deity which is not God. It’s also a way of worshipping God which is not through Jesus Christ. God doesn’t want us to worship anything, concept or personality, except him. Any personality, concept you give the honor, affection you are supposed to give to God is your idol. The game of football is idolatry because it takes the place of God in the heart of men.

The following point expresses idolatry in the game of football…
THINKING AND DISCUSSING FOOTBALL: - Lovers of football think about it always, and they discuses it all the time any where they found themselves. Do you think about God (or his word) as you think about football? Some people do not even create time to study the bible, talk-less of meditating on it. When walking on the streets, their minds are on football but they will not spend adequate time to mediate on the word of God. They don’t even remember the scriptures while walking on the streets. Football fan discuss football anywhere they go but will not discuss the bible or preach the gospel of our Jesus Christ to others. They are shy to discuss Jesus but bold to discuss UEFA Champions-league and football league match.
WATCHING OR PLAYING FOOTBALL AT THE EXPENSE OF WORSHIPPING God: - Instead of missing important football match, football lovers miss church service. Some Christian will not attend weekly church program if the day of the football match which is crucial, falls in the same day and time period of the service. Some might even go to the church but their mind will not be at the service, wishing the preacher to finish on time so they can go and watch the match or gather gist on the match played. There are some people who don’t have time to observe personal prayer, evangelism and bible study but must create time to watch or play football. You are an idol worshipper if you are in this category.
IDOLIZING PLAYERS: - Idolizing players by chanting their praise makes you an idol worshipper, Only God are we to give praise. Wearing jeans that bear their images and names makes you a worshipper of man.
IT DOES NOT GLORIFY GOD: - 1 Corinthians 10:31……”whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” Soccer glorifies Satan and self. All who are therefore involves are under the anger of God. All the practices in football are against the word of God.
IMMORALLY: - The game of football fosters all forms of immorality. Here is a comment on net about the Sweden female football team “69% of women soccer team are lesbians. 72% have sex, when gathered as a team with one another” A Christian who is void of worldliness and who possesses the spirit of God can not enjoy or love the game of football. It is dirty sight to behold. Why should you fall in love with football? Point black, you are not of God because you are void of the Holy Spirit. Its high you repent before you perish with multitude of football fans.
OTHER SINS ASSOCIATED WITH FOOTBALL
A. ANGER AND BITTERNESS: - The manner a player or team plays sometimes can annoy you; maybe you expect a long kick from player and he gives a short one which now debars the team’s chance of scoring a needed goal. This can result to anger and bitterness. A player might even miss a penalty, or your favorite team loses a match you expect it to win, the coach might even parade a wrong selection of players for a crucial match. All these and many could get you angry. If the rapture happens at that time, are you going? No, because no one with anger and bitterness can make Heaven.

Galatians 5:19-21“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

B. ABUSING AND CURSING: - If you will be sincere to yourself, there’s visually no match you watch without abusing or cursing a player, coach, team, referee or linesman. Even when you don’t open your mouth to abuse or curse. Your heart does it. There is no one who abuse or curse that will make Heaven, Matthew 5:22 “But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire”
C. GAMBLING: - Some players and fans go to the extent of gambling as they predict the result or out-come of matches.

D. DRUNKENNESS/TAKING OF ALCOHOLIC DRINKS: - In the quest for relaxation or merriment during a match, celebrating victory and trying to get over the hurtful feelings of defeat, people take alcohol or get themselves drunk, Taking of alcoholic drinks is a sin. Ephesians 5:18 “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

E. VIOLENCE: - Fighting and violence. It’s a pity that the church of God is also in love with the spirit of football. Some so called pastors even make provision for members to watch football matches in the church premises. What a profane activity in the house of God. In fact, some churches have football teams. This speaks volume of the depravity of modern Christianity. Some pastors have been deceived or manipulated to think getting involved in football is a means of evangelism.

Youth who are gathered in the church through football are just church-goers; they are not born again but are in the church to please the pastor who is sponsoring them. It is the concept of the world. The Lord is against it, it’s of the enemy of the Lord. The game of football l is idolatry because it is from the enemy of our Lord Jesus Christ. If you are in genuine friendship with Jesus Christ, you will not accept and love a concept that originates from his enemy.
