Dangote Industries Limited has said its crude oil refinery is expected to produce 65.4 million litres of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and kerosene daily when it comes on stream. The company, in a statement on Sunday, described it as the world’s largest single-train refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

It said the high volume of petroleum products from the refinery, located in Lagos, would transform Nigeria from a petrol import-dependent country to an exporter of refined petroleum products. According to the statement, the company’s plan is to satisfy Nigeria’s demand for petrol, aviation fuel, kerosene and diesel, leaving a surplus for export.

The Group Executive Director, Strategy, Capital Projects and Portfolio Development, DIL, Devakumar Edwin, said the refinery was being designed to accommodate multiple grades of domestic and foreign crude, and process them into high-quality petrol, diesel, kerosene, and aviation fuels that would meet Euro V emissions’ specifications, plus polypropylene. He said the refinery would also include a crude distillation unit, single-train residual fluid catalytic cracking unit, diesel hydro-treating unit, continuous catalyst regeneration unit, alkylation unit, and a polypropylene unit.

“The project will provide thousands of direct and indirect jobs and add value to Nigeria’s economic development. It will lead to significant skills transfer and technology acquisition opportunities in the country,” he added.

Edwin said the company was also constructing the largest fertiliser plant in West Africa with the capacity to produce three million tonnes of urea per year. According to him, the Dangote fertiliser complex consists of ammonia and urea plants with associated facilities and infrastructure.

“Dangote fertiliser project is planned to possess unique features like having the largest granulated urea fertiliser complex under development in the global fertiliser industry, with an investment of $2.0bn and a capacity of three million tonnes per annum, covering some 500 hectares of land,” he added.

Edwin said Dangote fertiliser would guarantee a substantial saving of foreign exchange in Africa and create surplus urea for farmers to enhance production of food grains and vegetables. He noted that the fertiliser plant’s core indication included a massive employment generation, which would lead to a reduction of migration of people from rural to urban centres.

Nigeria plans to double oil production and triple its refining capacity within six years, reviving previous pledges that turned out to be too ambitious.

The OPEC member is looking to pump 4 million barrels a day by 2025 and increase refining capacity to 1.5 million barrels daily, Maikanti Baru, managing director of state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corp., said at a conference Thursday in the capital, Abuja.

“Nigeria needs to unlock new barrels as quickly as possible,” he said.

Africa’s biggest oil producer pumps 2.2 million barrels a day and previously set a 4-million target for 2010, before successively delaying it.

The country, where output peaked near 2.5 million barrels a day in the middle of the last decade, has grappled with militant attacks, leakages and theft at its oil installations.

“Targets such as these are not new to NNPC,” said Cheta Nwanze, an analyst at Lagos-based SBM Intelligence. “Nigeria has not met a single production target for at least a decade now, in many cases because of security concerns.”

Self-Reliant

Nigeria also wants to be self-reliant in meeting its fuel demand and cut imports that put a strain on foreign reserves. Oil Minister Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu told the BBC in 2017 that he’d step down if the country doesn’t achieve that goal by the end of this year.

The target is likely to be missed as the four state-owned refineries struggle to fully utilize their combined 445,000 barrel-a-day capacity following years of neglect and mismanagement .

Baru said part of the additional refining would come from a 650,000 barrel-a-day complex being built near Lagos by Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest person. NNPC is working with private investors for the remainder, Baru said.

“The desperate need for an improvement in local refining capacity has been obvious for decades,” Nwanze said. The 2025 plan is “extremely optimistic.”

NNPC, which pumps crude from the country’s fields in partnership with international companies like Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Exxon Mobil Corp., returned to profit in 2018 after reporting losses in at least the three previous years, according to statements on its website. That was mainly due to the strong performance of its oil and gas production unit. Its refineries had a $365 million operating loss.

Two suspected cult members were killed as viral members of the secret cults attacked themselves at Imalete Alafia and Igbojiya communities in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos state on Sunday April 22nd. This attack comes barely a week after three suspected cultists were beheaded after their members clashed in Lagos.

According to reports, one of the suspected cultists identified as Focus, was killed and mutilated by the group about 10a.m. yesterday at Igbojiya community.oga it is bojige not igbojiya and malete not imalete

Focus, who is said to be a member of Eye confraternity, sat at a joint where a security man guarding one of the houses, sold cooked noodles, bread and egg. He was seated with the man waiting for his egg and bread when the cult members circled him and shot him.

However, the gunshots had no effect on him, so the cult boys attacked him with machetes and axes as he tried to escape. He became weak, having received severe cuts on his skull, neck and several parts of the body. He died near a popular spot in the community.

The cult members also killed another person in the neighbouring Imalete Alafia town. Prior to the latest cult killings, one person was butchered in like manner on Saturday at Imalete Alafia.

2 sisters have explained in details to an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Special Offences Court, on how a driver, Gabriel Ogbar, who is their father raped them serially for years. 

They told told Justice Abiola Soladoye that the incidents occurred from when they were 10 and 12 years old, at their home at Oke-Ogbe, Atura area of Badagry, Lagos State, Guardian reports.

They testified against Ogbar at the continuation of his trial for the offences. Sister A, now 23, told the court that she endured sexual abuse from her father for five years from the age of 12 until she was 18. She said: “When I was 12, I was living with my mum and dad, my mum is not always around because she is a businesswoman and my father was a driver at the time.

“Whenever my mother was not around, he would come to me at night with a knife or screwdriver or something harmful to threaten me to open up to sleep with me, because I was scared at the time, I gave in to his requests to sleep with me. It continued for a very long time, I could not tell anyone about it because I was scared. When I got to the age of 18, there was a night he came to me but I ran to my mum’s pastor, Mrs. Ochiegbu and reported the incident to her.

“I hid in her church and my dad came and was saying that I should start coming home but unknown to him, I had explained everything to them at the church, I waited until my mother returned and I went home with her. The next day, the pastor called my mother and told her everything I told her, she was upset and did not know what to do.”

Sister A said that her father continued to ask her for sex and she had to run away from home for a year.She said she thought the abuse at home had stopped until her older sister (Sister B) caught their father defiling their 13-year-old sister.

The press and members of the public were asked to leave the courtroom during the third sister’s testimony because she was a minor. Following the sisters’ testimonies, Justice Soladoye adjourned till May 23 for continuation of trial.
