*NAICOM just dropped a serious warning to insurance companies* 📢

*The directive*
NAICOM says: *"Companies with outstanding claims will not be relicensed"* under the ongoing recapitalisation exercise.

They sent a letter titled _“Regulatory Directive – Settlement of Discharged Claims as A Precondition for Re-Licensing Pursuant to the Ongoing Recapitalization Exercise”_ to all MDs/CEOs.

*Key points from NAICOM:*
1. *Mandatory settlement*: All insurance companies must _fully settle all outstanding duly discharged claims_
2. *Deadline for report*: Submit a report of reconciled claims signed by MD/CEO + evidence of payment *on or before 21st July 2026*
3. *Re-licensing condition*: Compliance is _a critical regulatory criterion for eligibility, confirmation, and re-licensing_ after the recapitalisation exercise.

*Why this matters now*
The *recapitalisation deadline is July 31, 2026*. Under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025 NIIRA 2025, new minimum capital is:
- *Life insurers*: ₦10bn, up from ₦2bn
- *Non-life insurers*: ₦15bn, up from ₦3bn
- *Reinsurers*: ₦35bn, up from ₦10bn.

NAICOM has also said *no extension* will be granted — "it is the law". Any company that fails will face liquidation, merger, or other regulatory action.

*The bigger picture*
NAICOM is trying to fix the "trust gap". For years people complained that insurers collect premiums but delay/fail to pay claims. Now they’re saying: _clear your claims first, then we’ll talk recapitalisation_.

Commissioner Olusegun Omosehin said by July 30, 2026 Nigerians will see "new insurance companies that have met the requirements, are stronger, better managed, and have the financial capacity to meet their obligations".

Analysts expect mergers and acquisitions to spike as smaller firms struggle. Some companies are already dropping business lines to survive.

*What this means for policyholders*
Good news: If your claim was "discharged" but unpaid, the insurer now has until July 21, 2026 to pay you or risk losing their license.
Also, there’s now an *Insurance Policyholders Protection Fund* — like NDIC for banks — to pay claims even if a firm becomes insolvent.

NAICOM is basically saying: no more running away with people’s money.

Look at what is happening in banks today. So many bankers being caught stealing millions of Naira from money deposited or invested by their clients, both those dead, And those still alive.


Stockbrokers are only regulated. And also checkmated by the fact that the traders and investors keep track of their money, Portfolio, and investments, almost on a daily basis. Unlike what happens to our bank account deposits, where we keep it there and forget to check it from time to time.

Despite all checkmates and regulatedness, never forget for a moment that Stockbrokers and Registrars still have Nigerian criminal blood in the veins.

As a young individual, I desperately wanted to travel out for studies, but I had nothing financially, being from a poor home. My mom had a shop selling palm oil, and there was a time when a university from the UK came to Nigeria for an admissions fair. The entrance fee at the Sheraton was N5000.

I had no shishi on me, so I rushed to my mother's shop and explained that I needed money. She opened her container, where she kept money, and emptied it for me. Some of the money already had a palm oil stain, and I was not even aware of it. I rushed down to the Sheraton for the fair, brought out and started counting the money at the entrance, and realised the palm oil stain. Most importantly, I realized my mom had emptied her container of cash for me that morning. That was an experience I would never forget.
