*PROBLEMS*

Return of idle trucks that park on the road for many days cause of traffic/gridlock in Apapa

Return of indiscriminate parking of trucks, tankers, containerized heavy duty vehicles on roads leading to Apapa and its environs
COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown altered the pace of work.

The temporary closure of major transit routes like Third Mainland Bridge, Eko Bridge and several other roads have impacted the Apapa route.

*OUTSTANDING ISSUES*

Other development includes the adoption of a Call-up system for trucks at the Lagos Port which is at advanced stage and will soon be deployed but when deployed no trucks will be expected on the roads unless called up.

The Nigerian Port Authority says it would deploy the use of inland waterways/terminals to evacuate cargo.

To improve cargo inspection, three scanners have been approved by the Federal Government and would soon be procured and installed at Apapa Port to improve the service’s efficiency.

Over 300 more scanners will be installed at other critical entry points of the country when the National Single Trade Window comes into full swing.

*CONCLUSION*

Traffic management and execution is State matter. It is important to note that the Presidential Taskforce has finished its work in Apapa and has handed over traffic management to the Lagos State government.

A petrol tanker has been gutted by fire in the Lacasera area of Mile 2, Lagos State. Some vehicles around the premises, about 5 in total were also reportedly razed by the inferno on Thursday. The driver was said to be conveying the petrol to a destination in the state when he lost control of the vehicle.

It was learnt that the truck overturned, resulting in a spillage that reportedly burst into flames. The spokesperson for the state Fire Service, Jamiu Dosunmu, said the fire had been extinguished, adding that no death was recorded.

The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said some stationary trucks were also affected during the fire incident, adding that efforts were on to evacuate the burnt truck from the road.

Oke-Osanyintolu said, “The Agency received distress calls concerning the above which occurred around 1 am and activated its emergency response plan.
