To smoke your fish you are going to need a smoking kiln which seems to be the major equipment in this line of business. there are different kind of smoking kilns with different power sources like firewood, sawdust, charcoal, gas, electricity etc.smoking kiln with firewood or sawdust as there powersource is not always advisable because these two power sources generates alot of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) which are toxic materials that can cause cancer when consumed by human. For more information about types of smoking kilns visit http://bethsaidal..com.ng/2014/01/types-of-fish-smoking-oven-avoiding-pahs.html below is a 300kg capacity smoking kiln with dual power source (gas and charcoal) , stainless steel interior , temperature gauge, oil and moisture collector, racks on rollers (trolleys), with a blower powered by DC/solar for uniform temperature distribution in the smoking chamber so your fish can dry uniformly and many more available at bethsaidal farms and agro allied.

lets keep the thread on fish smoking, if you are interested in exportation of Nigerian foodstuffs visit http://bethsaidal..com.ng/2014/01/exportation-business-has-been-around.html for detail information
Etranshub:
okay lets talk about export, Nigeria as a country has alot of her citizens in living abroad to the extent that the Nigerian house of representatives attest to the fact that they have lost count of how many nigerians living abroad .....source: http://saharareporters.com/2014/02/11/we-dont-know-how-many-nigerians-live-abroad-says-chairman-nigerian-diaspora-affairs

This although is not a good thing because it shows we do not have a good data base but on the bright side, its gives room for an increase in the demand of nigerian food stuffs which include smoked catfish. Exportation can be divided into two namely formal and informal export. Formal export requires that you have an export license and its capital intensive compared to the informal export . Although payment is more secure for formal export compare to the informal. Nigerian foods stuffs including smoke catfish can be exported both informally and formally. The type of export you are doing will determine the type of packaging you are going to do for your smoked catfish in other to meet the country of destination standard and also for better preservation before and after the date of arrival to the country of destination. for formal exportation the packaging has to be branded and a couple of test which includeds test for PAH has to be carried out on your product before they can be allowed into some destination countries............To be continued .....plenty work dey tomorrow lol

How lucrative is the business? i am sure someone is asking that question which indeed is one of the most important question to ask before venturing into the business of fish smoking either for local market or the international market which is exportation (we will talk more on that in the future)

Yes i have said it before, the business is lucrative and this is how: In fish smoking business, you either smoke your own farmed fish or buy from fish farmers, either way you will surely make your profit but i usally advise people to smoke their own farmed fish as the profit margin on that is very high but its most easy for people who are full time fish farmers. Lets start with the example of someone that wants to buy from a fish farmer, basically the rampant type of fish that are been smoked are refer to as melunch which ranges from any fish that can be folded through fishes that weigh 400g (i.e fish that weigh 400g and below while fishes that weighs 400g and above are refered to as table size). The melunch presently sells for about 400/kg while the table sizes sales for 500-550/kg.

If you buy 100kg of melunch at 400/kg that means you are to pay N40,000 for the 100kg of fish. follow the steps stated above to smoke, remember you will lose about 70-75% of the weight after smoking for longer preservation which means you will be left with about 25kg of smoked fish after the process. let us assume you made use of 2000 worth of gas or charcoal as power source depending on your type of smoking kiln (2000 naira is way too much for gas or charcoal for 100kg fish though) then you would have spent 42,000 + 3000 for miscelaneous then the total should be around 45,000.

The present market value for smoked fish is 3000/kg (thats why an average 1000pack of smoke fish weighs about 330g-350g) there your 25kg will fetch you 25 multiply by 3000 which will give you 75,000.

75,000-45,000 = 30,000 profit.

Remember the man that sells melunch to you is also making profit, so what if you are the farmer that farmed the melunch? That means more profit.

The business is indeed profitable but there is more......keep following

In other to smoke your fish and preserve it for as long as 12-16 weeks without the fish growing mould or getting spoilt then you have extract between 75-80% moisture and oil from the fish. i.e if you smoke a fish that weighs 1kg after smoking the weight should be between 200-250 grams. this can be easilly archieved by weighing your fish before smoking if possible on the rack of the oven as shown in the picture below.

AgricultureA-z Of Catfish Smoking Business and types of fish smoking kiln by Etranshub(op):
One of the easiest and cheapest cottage agric businesses you can start without stress is a catfish smoking business. There are several catfish farmers in Nigeria today, so getting catfish to smoke is not a problem. All you need to start this business is skill and determination. You don’t have to be a catfish farmer, you might not even have an idea of how fish grows but you can make big money smoking fish for fish farmers. This is a business for both fish farmers and non-fish farmers. Smoking fish can be easy if you follow some basic steps. The four basic steps in smoking fish are cleaning, curing, smoking and drying.

Tips on smoking catfish
The first step in your fish smoking business is to obtain some fresh fish. If it doesn’t look FRESH or smell FRESH or feel FRESH, it probably isn’t, and it will make your finished product taste bad. Use fresh fish. Smoking will not hide old fish. The quality will be reflected.Catfish harvest is categorize into two namely melange (unit weight between 300g-600g) and table size (600g-above),the price/kg of melange is between N350-N400 and N450-N500 for table size as at today. The pocket size of your target audience will determine the type in terms of size of fish to smoke.

After harvesting (as a farmer) or purchasing (as a non farmer) your fresh catfish, put them in a container and add a reasonable amount of cooking salt and cover the container with a lid and place a heavy object on the lid to prevent the fish from getting out of the container.Leave for about 30 minutes after which all the fish must have been dead then you can start the steps mentioned above.

CLEANING
• clean fish, removing the gills and intestine.
• Wash in clean water.

BRINE AND CURE
what is brine? Basically, brine is salt and water. Soaking the fish in brine will achieve a few things:
• It will firm up the flesh to be less mushy.
• It will draw out any old blood, which will improve the taste.
• It will add some saltiness to the fish in the right amounts; this is desired.
• It will add some additional flavoring to the fish.
• The cure will ensure that we are protected from the deadly botulism bacteria, especially since this is a relatively low temperature cooking environment.

(Brine recipe • 1/2 gallon good clean spring water • 3/4 cup kosher salt (or plain salt, but not iodized salt)

SMOKING AND DRYING
• Prepare smoker. Too much smoke will cause the fish to taste bitter. Use just enough wood to maintain a steady smoke (Read my next post for types of oven and there advantages)
• Remove fish from brine and rinse with cold water.
• Place fish, skin side down on oiled smoker rack.
• Keep the fire low, for the first two hours.
• Increase heat after the first two hours. The length of time will depend on the thickness of the fish, and on your preference for dry or moist smoked fish.
• . Continue smoking until fish is flaky and cooked through.

NB:Avoid smoking fish with firewood and sawdust, this is because these two generates a lot of smoke which contains high PAH that is very toxic to human health. Read the next post titled "types of oven" for information's on this

There are many advantages for smoking fish. It prolongs the “shelf life” of the fish once it has been smoked. Many people believe it enhances the flavor when used in sauces and soup. If you harvest a number of fish at a time, you can decide to smoke some to increase your income. A kilo of smoked fish is between N2500 – N3000. You can pack them in bags per kilo by sealing with low oxygen or even sell as fish hampers.
A smoked catfish can be stored in the freezer for sixty days.
Last but not least, smoked fish is a great way to get omega-3 fatty acids. There are numerous studies showing positive effects of these acids on the prevention of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

AgricultureRe: Catfish Farmers Lets Talk About Catfish Smoking by Etranshub(m): 8:18pm On Oct 14, 2015
@ smoking your own catfish means value adding to your harvest which gives you more than 100% profit on your investment if you are selling locally and more if you are considering exportation but just smoking your catfish is not enough for the export market as you have to make sure your fish is smoked and packaged in a very hygienic environment and also the level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)is less than 5mg/kg of the product. Else the product will not be allowed into places like US and EU where you have large populations of customers for the product. PAH can be prevented to the bearest minimum by using the right desight of smoking kiln and the right power source (sawdust and firewood is a no no) call 08167488947 or email olowaolugbenga@gmail.com for the design of smoking kiln with temperature gauge, automatic oil and moisture collector, racks on roller etc

AgricultureRe: Is Fish Farming As Lucrative As People Make It ? by Etranshub(m): 5:59pm On Oct 14, 2015
mekaboy:
THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE BUT SOME DETAILS ARE STILL MISSING I WANTED US TO US THE 1000 PIECES AS AN ESTIMATE TO DO THE CALCULATION, WHICH YOU SKIPPED .

FROM WHAT YOU SAID, YOU DID NOT STATE THE PRICE OF ANY POND TYPE.

ASSUMING ONE FISH COST N30 THE 1000 = N30,000

THE FEEDING AS U SAID IS = N250,000

THAT IS 280K ALREADY

ASSUMING ALL THE FISHES ARE SOLD AT 400 *1000 = 400,000

400K - 280K = 120K

I WILL NOT CONSIDER 120K AS PROFIT YET BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE DETAILS OF THE COST OF THE POND WHICH WILL STILL BE SUBTRACTED FROM IT, AND THE COST OF MAINTENANCE FOR THAT 5 MONTHS.

FROM WHAT I SEE, ASSUMING U SPENT 100K ON POND- 250K ON FEEDING- 30 FOR THE FISHES - OTHER EXPENSES 50K =430K

IF THE FISHES ARE SOLD FOR 450 EACH *1000 = 450K

SO U INVESTED 430K PLUS STRESS -- GOT 450K FROM SALES AFTER 6MONTHS --PROFIT IS 20K IN 6MONTHS .

so let's say for example you set up a soap making factory, do you intend to get the building/rent and machinery money from your first batch of production? It's amazing how people want to get pond money from their first batch of stocking..........fish farming isn't nairabet or baba ijebu but it's indeed profitable and not for people who lacks the passion for it or wants quick /fast money
CareerRe: 10 Professions In Nigeria You Can Still Practice Without Studying them by Etranshub(m): 6:20am On Oct 06, 2015
So mr op, u think it's the work of mechanical and electrical engineers to fix cars, radios, generators etc. Well u are wrong, there is a difference between a technician and an engineer....btw this is an indication that your iq is not that high as indicated by your handle.
HighIQ:
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE TO YOU ALL!!!

You can still be who you want to be!. Checkout the professions you can equally practice without studying it as course in the university.

1)BANKING : This profession is now flooded with workers who had graduated from courses not relating to banking profession. Imaging someone who had studied Yoruba or chemical engineering in the university but later got employed in a bank. This set of people only needed to be trained on some banking activities after they had been employed after which they are good to go.

2)TEACHING- It is very possible in Nigeria for someone who never studied education or any course relating to education emerging as a teacher.Regardless of the course you had studied, the point is- teaching can still be practiced by any graduate even without having an NCE or Degree in Education.

3)PHOTOGRAPHY- Do you know there is a course called photography? Tell me what are they studying in it? Even people who had only primary six certificate can do this job perfectly too.I don't see any reason me studying photography as a course before i can be a guru in it.

4)FARMING- I don't need to learn agriculture as a course in the university before i can own a farm. Anybody can easily be trained in this profession. There are books and handouts out there that can train you on fishery, snail rearing, pig farming etc or even on cultivation of crops. You could also find adequate answers to any question on farming you "Google search" online. Seminars on farming are also common where prospecting farmers are trained in farming. It can also be learned directly too from other farmers. This job can be practiced regardless of whether you are a doctor, lawyer, politician, or a banker. I know of a former president of this country, who owns a mega farm settlement despite the fact he never went to university not to talk of studying agriculture as a course.

5)DRAMA/FILM MAKING: an actor was once asked what he studied in the university and he replied "law". This answer made us to understand that anybody can become an actor, musician or artiste, irrespective of the course he or she had studied. You might have observed that hardly would you see any actor or musician in Nigeria who studied drama or music right back in school. Some of them are graduates of Law, medicine, accounting etc The 'funniest' thing is that those people may even come out better than people who had studied it as a course.

6)CHEMISTRY/INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY- Let me ask you a question. Is Aliko Dangote a graduate of industrial chemistry or chemistry? Of course not.But today he is a proud owner of a multi-billion dollar company in Nigeria that has provided jobs to many Nigerians. Other industries are also coming up in Nigeria today ranging from plastic industry to pure water industry, food, cream, rubber, biscuit, cements, sugar, salt industries and so on. The works performed in those industries can easily be learned from a specialist over a short period of time mostly from someone who had knowledge in chemistry or chemical engineering. You would no longer require the presence of such specialist after you had grabbed and finished up with those training. Meaning, you become a sole proprietor of those works and even train and employ others on it. So regardless of the course you had studied in the university, you too can learn the practical aspect of chemistry too and establish your own industry too. Thank God we have a lot of seminars that are been organized to teach people on how to make soap, nylon, asbestos etc. And from there you can be a millionaire and a proud owner of your own industry without having a certificate in chemistry

7)ICT PROFESSION- Some ICT companies now make huge money training people on computing, web designing, programming etc. The larger percentage of those attending such trainings and seminars are mostly computer illiterates. Certificates may even be handed over to them at the end of the training. This means that a computer- illiterate who had no knowledge in computing before would now turn to an expert making money through ICT and even training others without passing through the corridor of the department of computer science

8_ ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING- If you ask someone to get you an electrician to help you fix the wiring cables in your new house, don't be surprised if you see an o'level certificate holder at your door step ready to do the job.And this set of people would do this job perfectly and to your amazement. You now wonder if someone who had only o'level or even no education could be so perfect in fixing any damage to any appliance how much more a graduate who probably might have read courses like accounting, English etc and courses who had no link to science or electricity. If an illiterate or semi illiterate could be so perfect in it after learning about electricity, it means you can grab and understand such job perfectly too after learning it. Even though you never attended technical college nor learned about electricity or electronic in the university. I know of people who are civil servants and who also ventures in this job as a second-hand or part time profession .

9)MECHANICAL ENGINEERING- This is even worst!! Many people who work as a 'Radionic', car mechanic, generator repairer etc are mostly not graduate of this course. This job can easily be learned directly without holding a pen from the workers of such job who are mostly either illiterate or semi illiterates. Okay, tell me - is that mechanic near your house or that man who often fix your generator for you a graduate?. I'm sure i would have 80% 'No' as answer. This means any person or graduate can do well in this job even without learning it as course in the university .

10)MASS COMMUNICATION- Learning mass communication as a course in a tertiary institution is a tremendous waste of time. A graduate of English language, linguistics, language or even any other course can still become a tv/radio presenter, newscaster, a programme anchor even without having a certificate in mass communication.

It is high time we did something about china products, just yesterday i bought a solar powered power bank, for a huge amount of money because i thought it would save me the stress of carrying phone charger about, so i bought it.

when i got home i discovered something the power bank seems to be photosensitive, as its charging led flashes when under the sun,
but this is just a hoax, it doesnt charge, i left it in the sun for close to 2days now, and it doesnt have any charged voltages for my phone, it just flashes its led when in the sun so the buyer assumes its realy working but its not.
i dont know how they did it, but they did it, its a fake solar power bank,
here is what it looks like, does this happen anywhere else or only in Nigeria?
