Samsung’s new flagship smartphones might have been the main stars of its New York launch event this week, but it should probably be viewed as a concern for competitors like Microsoft or forked Android platforms like Remix OS.

If you missed the unveiling, DeX is a dock intended to be left sitting on a desk, or next to a TV, that you can place an S8 or S8+ into for a PC-like, desktop Android experience.

Now, while Samsung isn’t necessarily aiming at really ‘disrupting’ the PC market in sales terms, the DeX is a seriously tempting proposition for anyone looking for a truly workable single platform future, or people that tend to use work computers for most of their demanding tasks, and a phone or tablet at home.

When you plug your phone into the DeX and an external display – bearing in mind, this is being taken at Samsung’s word until I’ve used it for myself – the UI changes to adapt for the larger form factor, which has always been one of the key challenges for companies trying to crack this approach. Microsoft, for example, still hasn’t released the ability to run multiple apps at once, despite first showing off Continuum in April 2015. It is coming with the Windows 10 Creators Update in April though.

One of the best implementations for me is Jide’s Remix OS, which provides a better, though not entirely perfect, docked/desktop Android experience than some rivals, and certainly better than screen mirroring your standard phone display. Multiple windows is a must, and Remix delivers that.

The Android notifications menu sometimes fills up so fast, it’s easy to close it without properly checking it. If you’ve done this, and think you might have accidentally swiped something important into non-existence, you can still get it back. Here we show you how to recover lost notifications on your Android device by finding the Android notification history.

The notifications log was first introduced all the way back with Android 4.3 Jellybean, and is still accessible from Android Lollipop through Android Marshmallow and Android Nougat. The Notification Log enables you to view deleted notifications (in fact, you can see all system notifications), but it is only accessible through an almost-secret widget. It seems that you need to enable the Developer Options first to unlock the widget on some phones. To unlock the developer options, go into your phone Settings > About Phone and then tap on the Baseband version several times. THE ERROR MESSAGE

How to fix this error message on Android “Application not installed”. What happened? All you were trying to do was install an Android app. That should be simple.


Receiving this error message is a common problem when downloading APK files.

APK stands for Android Application Package, and it used by the Android operating system as the package file format for the installation and allotment of mobile apps.

If for some reason, your Android device is unable to access Google Play, APK files offer another option for installing and downloading mobile apps. APK files are designed exclusively for Android devices.


Before getting into the details of the ‘Application not installed’ error message, let’s take a look at Android and its development and success over the years.

ANDROID

Android is an operating system that was developed by Google. It was originally designed mainly for touch screen devices such as phones and tablets. It has since developed further to Android TV, Android Auto, and Android Wear.

Android initially received a lukewarm reaction when it was released in 2007. Many were impressed with the operating system’s design but were unsure if mobile manufacturers would be prepared or willing to replace their current operating systems.

In July 2013, the Google Play store had over one million published Android applications, with more than 50 billion applications downloaded.

As of October 2016, more than a billion Android devices have been sold with an activation rate of 1.5 million per day.

The first Android phone was the T-mobile G1, introduced in October 2008. Since 2008, Android has developed and released many updates that have consistently improved the operating system by adding new features and addressing previous issues/bugs.

Each significant release was named, in alphabetical order, after a dessert or candy. The first was the “Cupcake”. This was followed by “Donut”, “Honeycomb”, “Ice Cream Sandwich”, “Jelly Bean” and “Kit Kat”.

Applications for Android devices can easily be installed from the Google Play Store. In recent years, Android has a growing availability of third party applications. These can be acquired by downloading and installing the application’s Android Application Package (APK) files.
