Liz When I got back, the room was suspiciously quiet. Mille was asleep while Brian and Liam were acting strange. “Why are you both acting so cold?” I questioned with one hand on my hip. “Nothing. We’re okay.” Brian answered. “Liam?” “Your brother just told you. We’re just a bit tired and worried.” He replied but his eyes were telling a different story entirely. “You taught the kids that lying is a sin and…” “I better go check on Elliot.” Brian excused himself. “William what is going on?” “Sweetheart, you’ve already heard…” “The truth.” I narrowed my eyes at him . He took a deep breath. “Mille knows that he’s gone.” “What?!” “Liz, it’s not what you think.” “What do you mean it’s not what I think? I knew I shouldn’t have left her side. I’m sure it’s that brother of mine who opened his wide mouth once again. How could both of you do this to me?” “Darling wait…” “I’ll listen to you once I pull off Brian’s ears.” I turned to leave but he gripped my wrist. “We didn’t tell her, she knew already.” My knees went weak instantly. “She…she…knew?” “I think she actually saw it happen.” “Oh no, please it’s not true. Did she tell you that?” “She didn’t say anything after that. She cried herself to sleep.” “My God! Liam why is life like this? When her mother died, it was hell. I don’t know if she’ll be able to make it through this kind of shock.” He patted my hands. “She’ll be fine, darling, she’ll be fine.” I sat beside her all day. When she woke up, she ate very little and cried more, no amount of consoling seemed to work for her. She continued that way for days and days. She cried the most on the day that was supposed to be her wedding day. We couldn’t leave the hospital because her health was deteriorating. Elliot came to her room in a wheelchair once in a while, he kept pleading for her forgiveness.None of us understood why because they never told us what happened that night. She never spoke to anyone. She would just stare at nothing in particular so we were surprised when she spoke about a week and some days after the incident. “I want to go home mummy.” She said. “Sweetheart but you …” “Tell the doctor I’ll die if I stay here any longer. I want to go home.” Fear gripped me. I left to talk to the family doctor. He was reluctant to let her go at first but he later give in. He assured me that he would come over from time to time to check on her. He felt so much pity for her. He said he would discharge her the following evening. “Baby, you’ll leave tomorrow.” I smoothened her hair. “Thank you mum. I could die here.” “Shh, don’t talk about lying my love.” “I want to see him before I go.” “See who?” Jason moved closer to the bed. “Niel.” “Baby, I don’t know if that’s a good idea. You know you’re not feeling well.” “Aunt’s right, Mille. I don’t think I approve of it.” “Approve?” She scoffed. “Watch your words Jay, she’s fragile.” “Mille, I’m sorry but I still stand with Aunt.” “Nobody’s stopping me from seeing Niel, mum, nobody.” “We know you want to see him dear but it’s not good for you. Your health will get worse.” “Then so be it. I want it to get worse, I want to die mummy. I can’t take this anymore. First, mum and now, Niel. Why me?” She broke down again, weeping loudly. “Oh sweetheart, please don’t say that. You want to die and leave your father and all of us broken? You’ll see Niel again someday. I promise you that.” She jerked away from me. “Don’t promise me anything, mum promised me so many things and yet she was taken from me, same happened with Niel. Why didn’t they shoot me? Why him? Why didn’t an angel appear and stop them? Why mum, why? They took my joy, how could they be so cruel?” She yelled. Gloria and Kara came in to console her but she just kept crying. She cried till there were no tears to shed anymore. She leaned on me and I patted her quietly till her sobs reduced to hiccups. The atmosphere in the room was beyond sorrowful. “Mummy, please take me to him.” “That will be tomorrow dear. I need to speak to those in charge. Brian can you do that for me?” “Sure, excuse me.” He replied. “Thank you mum.” Jamille Night was approaching and my fears increasing. Words cannot describe the pain of losing a loved one, not just any loved one but my fiancée. I wish there was something I could do better than crying. I felt like climbing the tallest mountain and screaming to the world that my Niel was taken away unjustly. In the day and night, I always heard his voice around me. I was somewhere near insanity. I wanted him to come back to me. I heard his deep voice and laughter. I saw his face all around me. Elliot made my predicament worse each time he came to my room. I would close my eyes and wish he could transform to Niel just for a few seconds but when I opened my eyes, it was still Elliot. I prayed for death to come for me too but death went on leave. No one could understand the hell I was going through. I needed to see his body once again. I didn’t care if they thought I was crazy. I just want to feel my knight once more. I never thought I would face this type of heartbreak. This heartbreak hurt a lot, it felt like not just a part, but the whole of me had gone away with him. Patiently, I waited for night to pass and a new day to break so I could go and see the remains of the one who took my heart away. “I slept off baby, I’m so sorry.” Mum apologized as she woke up,distracting me from the thoughts of Niel. “Good morning mum.” “Good morning sweetheart. Did you get any sleep?” “Mummy, I want to see Niel.” I could see the sadness sweep through her features but I wasn’t so interested. “Baby are you sure of this?” “Yes mummy.” “Fine, we’ll get ready and go.” Indeed, we got ready and in a few hours I was on my way to see Niel, supporting my weight on Jason. He asked to come along, Kara, Rachel, Gloria, Elliot and aunt Charis came too. His body had been brought out already. Yes, I saw what I went there to see. The body of the one I would forever love as cold as death itself. He looked so calm and peaceful laying there. I stared at the body for a long while and everyone who came along stared at me in turn, waiting to see my reaction. At long last, the tears came gliding slowly down my now bony cheeks. I cried, not the loud cry that left me with headaches but a gentle, soft and painful cry. He was gone. If only, I could take his body with me and stare at it all day, I would have done it. I dropped a light kiss on his forehead. “I’ve seen enough mum, I’m ready to go.” She looked at me as if she was expecting me to act a little drama before leaving. “Hold on sis.” Jason pulled me close to him once again as we turned around to leave. I halted and turned to the attendant. “He’s the one I love, handle the body with care.” The middle aged man nodded and I continued on my way. “Aunt, have you fixed a date for the burial?” I asked aunt Charis. “No,my daughter. He was your husband to be so I want you to pick a date.” “Niel wasn’t my husband to be. He is and will always be my husband.” |

Liz The minutes of waiting soon turned into hours. I sent Kara and Rachel home with the two sleeping children. I tried to make Charis and Liam go too but they wouldn’t budge. I didn’t even bother asking Brian to leave because I knew he wouldn’t move a muscle. My whole body was tired, my mind was too. I didn’t quite understand why life would keep throwing stones my way. “Sweetheart, what’s running through your mind?” I hesitated a bit. “Don’t even try saying you’re only worried about Mille and Elliot because I can see there’s more to it.” “A thought crossed my mind.” I paused. “Go on darling.” “Do you think God let this tragedy fall on Mille to punish me for the life I once lived?” “My goodness! Where did that come from?” “I don’t see any other reason why she should suffer like this. Even if she’s done a couple of wrong things in her life, she’s not a bad person. I think she’s the sweetest girl I’ve ever known.” The tears came again. “I think the same goes for you too, darling. You may have done a couple of wrong things in the past but you’re not a bad person. You’re the sweetest woman I’ve ever known. I don’t think God is punishing Mille because of you. He had a reason for taking Jathniel and if he pleases, he’ll tell us that reason here on earth but you know he could still decide to tell us why when we get to heaven. So don’t torture yourself wifey.” He pulled me closer to himself. “Thank you Liam.” “Mille and Elliot will be fine. I’m sure of it.” I nodded a response. I saw two doctors walking towards us. I searched their faces for something I could hold on to but they maintained a blank look. We all rose to our feet at the sight of them. “We apologise for taking longer than we informed you. The truth is that we almost lost the gentleman but I’m pleased to tell you that for now, they are both doing fine.” I think everyone in the room released their breaths simultaneously. I sat down and buried my face in my palms, rendering my silent thanksgiving to God. “We still need to watch the knee of the gentleman really well. The shot he got to his knee must have been from a super trained hand.” “Doctor, when can we see them?” Brian asked. “You can see them just as soon as they are taken to their rooms. They should be awake by tomorrow.” “ I suggest you all go have some rest after you see them. We wouldn’t want to admit a whole family please. It’s almost midnight” The other doctor spoke up with genuine concern in his eyes. “Thank you doctors. We appreciate your help. May God bless you for us.” I said to them. “Glad to be of service ma’am. Excuse us.” The second doctor replied. After some minutes, they were wheeled out of the operating room to their respective rooms. Luckily, the rooms were just opposite each other so we didn’t have to cross country to visit the next person. I forced Charis, Brian and Liam to go home while Jason, Gloria and I stayed on. “Don’t take Charis to her house please. She just lost a son and the other isn’t awake yet.” I told Liam. “I know. She’ll sleep over tonight then I’ll take her there tomorrow to freshen up before we come back. Take care okay? We’ll come as early as we can.” “Thank you darling.” “I’ll call at intervals. If anything comes up, let me know.” “Yes dear.” I escorted them outside before going back to Mille’s room. “Aunt, let me check on Gloria since you’re here.” He got up as soon as I walked in. “Okay son.” For the remaining part of the night, Jason moved between the two rooms. I also went to check on Elliot a couple of times. Sleep was very far from my eyes. I spent time looking at Mille’s gentle sleeping face. More than once, I checked her pulse to be sure my baby was still alive. I couldn’t close my eyes for one minute because I feared she would die on me. It felt as if her being alive depended on me staying awake to watch her. Daybreak met us still afraid, hanging on to a loose thread of hope. Everyone came back around 7 am. They all looked horrible except the kids. They didn’t understand the gravity of what was going on and for a while, I envied the peace they had. Only me, Brian and Kara were in the room when Mille opened her eyes. The others were with Elliot who was still unconscious. “Mille? My baby.” I called to her softly as she turned her head to face me. The doctor came in at that moment. “She’s awake doctor.” He smiled as he greeted us and walked to her side to inspect her arm. He examined quietly for some minutes. “How are you feeling Miss?” He asked. “Arm.” She replied weakly. “We performed surgery on you to remove the bullet that lodged in your arm so you’ll be feeling pains there for a while okay?” She nodded in understanding. “You’ll be fine, trust me.” He smiled and exited the room. Kara dashed out and came back with Rachel and the rest. “How are you feeling sweetheart?” I asked. She scanned all the expectant faces awaiting her reply. “My arm aches and I’m weak, very weak.” “I’m sorry sugar.” Everyone was all over her, pretending their ‘sorry’ was for the bullet wound, leaving the main reason untouched. I saw Charis slip out of the room, I was guessing she couldn’t hold back the tears. She couldn’t say much, she only managed a smile that bore pain and sorrow. After a while, I decided to go freshen up and bring some food for them. Jason and Gloria accompanied me. We stopped at Gloria’s so she would get some things before we moved on to my house. Liam Brian and I sat beside Mille quietly. I would have loved to engage her in a conversation so that the worried expression would leave her face but she obviously didn’t want any conversation. Rachel was seated on the other side of the bed. “He’s awake.” Kara burst into the room. “Oh thank God.” Rachel said as she stood up to follow Kara out of the room again. “Tell him I’m fine.” Mille spoke up, loud enough for them to hear. They halted in their tracks for a minute. “Okay, I will.” Kara finally replied and they stepped out. “Won’t both of you talk to me?” She questioned. “I… erm…we…” Brian was stuttering badly. “We just want you to know that we love you Mille and we’ll always be here for you as long as God keeps us alive.” I came to his rescue. The words were so heavy but they eventually came out. Her expression became more sorrowful and I wished I didn’t say anything at all or I had stuttered like Brian. “He’s gone, isn’t he?” None of us could find the courage to raise our heads. “I can feel it. He’s gone with my whole heart.” Her voice broke as she let down the tears. |
Shewrites writes in simple words. It's very easy to relate to all her works. More grease to your elbow ma'am |
