I picked Natasha from the airport on Monday. She was excited that she would finally meet my family.Gloria even agreed to come home just to meet her. When we arrived the house,Mum and Gloria were waiting. Jathniel was nowhere to be found since morning and I really didn’t care. We would have stayed in the same room but Natasha claimed she wanted to set a good record for herself.Jathniel came back home late in the night. He was obviously dodging me. Being a mischievous person, I thought of what I would do to really annoy him.
At first,I wanted to tell Mille about Bella but that seemed too wicked a thing to do. I decided to go for something much lighter so I waited patiently for the weekend to arrive. A perfect opportunity presented itself. Natasha’s sister was supposed to be her maid of honour at the church wedding but her exams were preponed. I told Natasha not to worry about a maid of honour since the wedding would be a small one but she insisted I find her a maid of honour. I wanted to ask Gloria to do it but I went for Mille instead. Natasha and I were out one Friday evening when I decided to call Mille.
“Hello Mille.”
“Hello” She replied drily.
“Uhm it’s Elliot.”
“Wow, hi handsome. I thought you would never call” She sounded a bit more cheerful.
“Why wouldn’t I call?”
She laughed “What’s up with you and your wedding plans ?”
“Niel told you?” I was surprised.
“We’re best friends and I’m his bae,he tells me everything.”
“I hope you’re sure about that.”
“I’m positive dear.”
“Hope you’ll be there next weekend for the court wedding.”
“Yes sir.”
“Okay. I need a favour from you Mille.”
“Let’s hear it.”
“I want you to be my wife’s maid of honour.”
“Wow,I’ll be delighted to do that. I have to come see her if that’s the case.We have to know each other better.”
“Yeah. Thank you dear. You’ve just helped me a lot.”
“Glad to be of service. Are you guys home?”
“Nope. Are you in school?”
“Yeah I am.”
“Alright,we’ll come pick you up In a few minutes. I hope you’re done with lectures for today.”
“Yeah. Gloria and I are supposed to spend the weekend at my place but I don’t mind swapping. I’ll just inform Gloria,she’s here with me.”
“Alright. You girls should get ready.” I hung up.
“She has agreed Tasha.” I turned to her.
“Oh thank God” She replied. Her light brown eyes were twinkling in excitement.
Tasha was a real beauty to behold. She was just of average height but her beauty covered up for her. Her hair was jet-black, really curly,shoulder length and soft. She never liked the curly nature,she admired straight hair a lot. No matter how much she straightened it,it always went back to square one. She never plaited her hair since I knew her. Thick eyebrows and eyelashes were given to her from above. Her smooth skin had a caramel colour. She had the body of a model . She was slim but not to the extreme bony side. I always counted myself lucky to have her. She came at the right time. I never believed in dating or marrying anybody younger or older than me. I was indeed lucky to find someone exactly my age. She had her own flaws but the one I hated most was her aggressiveness. Tasha grew up the hard way always fending for herself. As a result,she was used to doing things aggressively. She was too strong for a woman and could be really stubborn if she wanted to. I managed to tame her a bit over the years or so I thought. I could only pray that the spirit that usually descends on her goes on a really long holiday because I loved her,just as much as I loved Bella. In Bella’s casse,Jathniel was faster and I lost her forever.
We got to Uniuyo main gate and picked them up.For a second,I almost regretted picking them up because my ears were suffering from their squeals and laughter. I was able to get to the house a sane man. They stayed with Tasha all evening talking and having fun. All was going well till Jathniel came storming into the house. I was in the living room watching a tennis match.
“Stop raging like a bull Niel,what’s wrong with you?”
“My name is Jathniel. I’ve always told you guys that no one ought to call me Niel apart from Mille.”
“Okay okay. Mille is with Natasha and Gloria upstairs.I asked her to come spend the weekend here and to be my wife’s maid of honour.” I said excitedly. The veins on Jathniel’s neck seemed to become more pronounced as each word flew out of my mouth.
“You did what?”
“Yeah,I’m excited too. She’s such an angel.”
Mille came downstairs. “Hey boo.”
Jathniel just gave her the dumbest smile and said “Let’s go outside.”
I was tempted to eavesdrop but I shrugged off the idea almost immediately.

I knew Niel was angry immediately I sighted him. We went to his car and sat there.
“What’s wrong Niel?”
“Everything is wrong Mille,everything.”
“I still don’t understand you.”
“You told me you were spending the weekend at your place and you changed your mind without saying a word to me all because my brother asked you to come.”
“Niel,I just intended to surprise you.”
“I’m not done yet.You also accepted to be Natasha’s maid of honour without even telling me.You know how I feel about my brother yet you went ahead.”
“I’m sorry Niel. I wanted to surprise you with my presence here. Elliot only asked me about the maid of honour thing today.”
“Mille,I don’t fancy surprises like you do and in a relationship there’s a 13 letter word known as communication.You can’t just change plans as if you’re changing clothes. You know I love an organized life. I went to the house to wait for you only for Aunt Liz to come back and tell me you called her to change plans. I don’t think that was fair at all.”
“I’m sorry Niel. I really am.”
“I’m not happy Mille but it’s okay.”
“You’ll forgive me just like that?”
“Did you expect me to fry your head. I forgive you but you really need to learn how to communicate with me. Tell me anything that’s on your mind. I know you enjoy keeping things to yourself but it just won’t work here.”
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s 7alright love. I’m sorry too for yelling at you. I just got mad.”
I nodded not wanting to say anything more.
“It’s your turn to forgive me hon. I know how much you dislike my madness.”
“You didn’t offend me Niel. I think my brain needed it.”
“No love. You didn’t deserve the yelling.” He took my hand an began caressing it for a while.
“Let’s go inside.” I said.
We went out and he pulled me close as we headed back into the house. I stopped him before we entered. “What are you hiding Niel?”
“What?”
“There’s a look of guilt you’ve been carrying for a while now.”
“Guilt? Don’t be ridiculous Mille. I’m fine,it’s just your imagination.”
“I hope so. How was work?”
“Stressful. I guess that’s what made me overreact.”
“Eya sorry.”
“Yeah thanks.”
I forced him to have a few minutes chat with Natasha because she was dying to talk with him. Previously,he always avoided her claiming he didn’t want to clash with Elliot. He didn’t regret talking with her. Natasha was a lively person.She could bond easily with anybody. Niel ended up being a part of her long list of friends. Her accent was strange to us at first but we got used to it and even mimicked her sometimes.She was bent on learning Ibibio so Gloria taught her. I couldn’t do it because,even though I had spent all my life In Akwa Ibom,the language couldn’t just stick. I only knew some basic greetings and I was content.
Jathniel remained close to Natasha even after the court and church wedding. Elliot went back to Lagos for a while,not before advising me to keep an eye on Niel and Tasha.
I laughed it off when he told me. I trusted Niel completely and I was pretty sure he would never dream of snatching his husband’s wife.Elliot only came home once in a month to stay with Natasha and she was getting worried. It took the words of Niel to convince her that he was travelling solely for his job. A mini quarrel ensued between Elliot and Jathniel. Jathniel consistently reminded his mother that he warned her about letting Elliot get married so fast. After a lot of yelling and fruitless family meetings,they convinced Elliot to carry her with him to Lagos.
Before they left, Elliot and Jathniel seemed to get along a little better than before. At least,that alone made Aunt Charis rest her head a bit. It was slowly getting to Easter. I promised Kara I would pay her a visit so all plans were already in motion. One afternoon,Tessy called me. I thought she was just calling to check on me but life has a way of proving you wrong. She claimed to have a confession to make and she needed to see me urgently. We fixed a date and a venue. I was really anxious to hear what she had to say but when I got there,I wished I never agreed to see her in the first place.
She got to our meeting point before I did.
“Hi Mille.”
“Good evening Tess.”
“You’re looking leaner than the last time I saw you.”
“It’s school stress . I was ill last week sef.Man must hustle my sister.”
She smiled and ran her fingers through her weave. That was when I noticed she had an engagement ring on.
“Tess,you’re bad o.”
“What I do na?”
“So you got engaged and you couldn’t tell this your small friend.Anyway,congratulations to you.”
“Thanks dear. Actually,that’s what I called you here for.” She didn’t seem to be as excited as I expected.
“Is anything wrong?”
“Not exactly. The thing here is the man involved.”
“Who is he?”
“Mille you have to forgive me for not telling you on time.”
As she said that,my mind instantly raced to Jathniel. My heart started beating seriously.
“It’s your father.”
“What happened to my father?”
“He’s the one I’m engaged to.”
I felt like pepper water was poured into my eyes. Everything seemed to stop working for a moment. To say I was shocked was a terrible understatement.

“Because it’s past and gone. Stop reminding me of it.”
“Elliot,I didn’t ask you to remind your brother of his past even though we’re all ashamed of it. Jathniel,you can’t stop your brother from getting married when he wants to.” Mum said.
“Of course I won’t stop him before he insults my life outta me. Congratulations bro.” I extended my hand for a handshake. He hesitated a while before taking it.
“Thank you. She’ll be coming over by Monday.”
“Where is she from?” Gloria asked.
“South Africa.”Mum answered so fast.
“So because she’s a foreigner,mum accepted with the speed of light.” I thought.
“Don’t they pay bride price there?” Gloria asked exactly what was on my mind.
“I guess they do. Natasha is an orphan. She has only a younger sister who’s about your age Gloria. Her parents’ family are not interested in their welfare at all.She has always struggled alone to take care of her sister since she was a teenager.”
“Eya,that’s so sad. So tell me,is she pretty?” Gloria went on and I excused myself,not wanting to listen to Elliot anymore.
Mum followed me to my room. “Son,are you okay?”
“I’m okay mum. I need to rest.”
“No you’re not.”She drew me to herself.
“Mum, you’ve forgotten that I’m a grown man and I can’t be leaning on my mum like this.”
“Let me hear word Jathniel. You’re still my son no matter what and I love you.”
I shifted a little bit from her. “Mum,why didn’t you ever hold me like this when I was a child. I desperately wished you could hold me like this back then but you gave more than half of your love to Elliot only.”
“I’m sorry son. Truth is I never realised it till you were all grown up.Forgive me.”
“There’s nothing to forgive. Funny enough,I never held a grudge against you.”
“Thank you son. I think your brother’s wife will be great,I’ve spoken with her today and I wasn’t disappointed.”
“I have nothing to say to you mum.”
She smiled.”Just wait to know her better. They’ll be staying here for a while before they move to their own house.”
“It’s a relief to know you’ll be having company here.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I’ve been planning on moving to my own house.”
“What?”
“Yes mum. I’m old enough to take care of myself. Almost all my mates are no longer living with their parents.”
“That’s because most of them have both parents alive. You have only me and you want to desert me in this big house?”
“It’s not deserting mum. Elliot and his wife will be here and Gloria too.”
“Elliot will go to his own house. He can’t raise his family here. Gloria barely comes home and you know that.”
“Mum,I can’t stay here forever too and you know how Elliot and I are. I don’t want us to have extra issues.”
“Please son. I beg you in the name of all you hold dear to your heart,don’t go. At least stay until you get married. I’ll die of loneliness Jathniel.” She knelt before me.
“Mum please stand up,don’t do this please.” I pulled her up. “I’ll think about it please.”
She buried her face in my chest weeping and it melted my heart.”I’ll stay okay?”
Her head shot up “You mean ii?”
“Yes mum.”
“ I love you baby.” She threw her arms around my neck.
“I love you too mum.” The ringing of my phone in my pocket made her let go of me. I knew it was Mille because I used a peculiar ringtone for her.
“Hello baby.”
“Don’t baby me oga. You promised to call when you get home and you didn’t.”
“I’m sorry love. I was kinda busy.”
“Alright. How’s everyone?”
“They’re alright.” I answered absent mindedly.
“My regards. Thanks for today.”
“Anything for you ma. I’ll call you before I sleep.”
“Alright bye.” She hung up.
“That was Mille?” Mum asked and I nodded in affirmation.
“Does she know about Bella?”
“Not yet mum. I can’t tell her now. This relationship is too young for such stories.”
“I hope you’re making the right decision.”
“I know I am.” She left my room few minutes later.

Brian came over to my house pleading and begging.He explained everything to me. I wanted to make him suffer but the love I had for him wouldn’t let me. I agreed to forgive him for misleading me. To my surprise,he asked me to marry him. I knew he loved me but I never thought he would propose to me. The fact that he was getting old didn’t deter me. I loved him and that’s all that mattered. I gleefully accepted to be his wife. The only thing that was a source of worry was his daughter. He still insisted on keeping his daughter in the dark for a while. It didn’t sit well with me but I agreed to prevent a quarrel. I decided to let Jathniel know what was going on.
I explained everything to him from start to finish. He was dumbstruck. He insisted on telling Mille. He didn’t want to lie to her at all. I appreciated the fact that he wanted to be sincere with her all the way but I pleaded with him to keep it to himself for a little while I promised to let her in on everything before the wedding but first,I had to win her confidence so things won’t explode badly when she learns that in a few months,I would be her new mother.
I called Jason too and told him the good news. He was excited. He knew better than anyone else to keep his mouth closed. His father drilled that into him so I trusted him too well. I hoped all our plans would not backfire at the end of the day.
