“I had a mini mission here. It’s a really long story.”
“I’m more than ready to listen to you.”
“Jathniel had a wife before and she committed suicide. Her father is,or was not happy with what happened to his only daughter. He had been monitoring Jathiel since so he knew when your sister came into the picture. He wanted to have his pound of flesh.”
“So,you’re the agent of darkness he used to plot the death of my sister?”
No,that’s too harsh. He only wanted me to lure her into the trap he’d set.”
“And you agreed for how much?”
She kept mute.
“So,you came into my father’s life to deceive him and kill his daughter?”
“No Jason. You of all people should know that I truly love your father.”
“We’ll come back to that ridiculous statement soon ma. So what level has your plan to kill my sister reached?”
“There’s no plan anymore.”
“Come again.” I could barely believe my ears.
“Mr. Jackson just kicked the bucket this afternoon.”
“This Mr. Jackson is Jathniel’s former father in law?”
She nodded like a robot. I had never seen her look so guilty ever since I knew her. I was truly shocked that she was capable of doing this to my father.
“So you claim to love my father and you want to kill his daughter. Is that true love or has love gotten another meaning without my knowledge?”
“I swear on everything I have that I never knew she was your sister. As a matter of fact,I was only told what they hired me for,they delayed telling me who my target was. It was only after I knew she was your sister that I was shown my target. I owed Mr. Jackson a favour from a long while ago,I needed to return the favour or he would deal with me mercilessly. The man is very evil and ruthless.” Her eyes showed real fear. She was tapping her foot on the floor nervously like someone whose bladder was about to burst. She kept on telling me long stories but I didn’t care to pay serious attention to her.
“Are you done with your super story yet?”
“Jason have mercy on me. Please don’t tell your father.” She knelt before me tugging at my trousers.
“I won’t have someone who is older than me kneeling before me. Stand up please.”
She hesitated for a while before rising. “Jason just help me and God will bless you. Your father is the only hope of getting married I have right now. I’m getting to 36 years Jason. Please I promise to turn a new leaf. I’ll never agree to such deals again in my life.” She was really desperate but the part of me that would have pitied her died a few minutes earlier.
“I’ll think about what to do next.” I deliberately left her hanging on a thin thread of hope. I had made up my mind to tell dad about my findings already. For two days, I didn’t say a word to dad for two days. Tessy was getting relaxed,thinking I wouldn’t spill. On Monday,after lunch I decided to drop the bomb when she went to wash the dishes not expecting it to backfire. Unfortunately,things took a sour turn. I carefully told dad everything from start to finish. He flared up immediately I was done. He began yelling at me,drawing her attention to us.
I couldn’t believe he would choose this strange woman over me. He accused me of trying to kill his joy. He said a whole lot of hurtful things,I had to ask her to beg him to stop. She claimed innocence and began pleading on my behalf. When he finally calmed down,he made it clear that since I was making his wife to be uncomfortable ,he would have no choice but to ask me to leave. Tessy immediately went on her knees.I wasn’t fooled by her acting. I was simply irritated. In any case,her fake begging made dad revoke his statement. I thanked them both and announced I would be heading back to Benin sooner than planned just to give them space. I was enraged. After the episode, I picked my wallet and headed straight to Aunt Liz’s.

I had been trying to reach Niel for the past two days to no avail. I was genuinely worried about him and not even Kara’s kind words could bring me out of my worries. On Monday afternoon, the door bell rang and I went to open it,only to come face to face with Niel. I assessed him thoroughly. He was wearing a black striped suit. His eyes looked heavy,he obviously hadn’t had enough sleep. His face looked a bit rough compared to the smooth face I saw on Friday. He leaned on the door post and said “When you’re done observing me,remember to let me in.”
“I’m so sorry love. Come in.” I made way for him to move inside.
“Who’s there Mille?” Kara yelled from the room.
“It’s Niel.”I yelled back.
“Niel,why do you look like this?” I asked him.
“I need a bottle of really cold water if I’m to have enough sense to talk.” He answered. I dashed into the kitchen,emerging few seconds later with cold wwateer. He accepted the bottle and glass cup with an inaudible ‘thank you’. He gulped the water so fast that I was scared.
“Jathniel?” Kara called as she came out rubbing her swollen stomach.
“Hey Kara. How’re you?”
‘The question is how are you?” I shot at him.
“Take it easy babe. If I die now,it’ll be this same you that’ll cry. So chill.”
He relaxed on the sofa after dropping the glass on the centre table.
“Finally,my brain has shifted back to its original position,” He made a flat joke.
“How’s Elliot? Is he still alive?”
“Troublesome people like Elliot always live long. He’s alive and on his way to recovery.”
“Thank goodness!” I exclaimed.
“Was there any serious damage done to his heart?” Kara asked.
“Not a scratch.”
“How’s that possible?” I asked.
“Elliot’s body is sort of strange. I can’t remember the medical term exactly but Elliot has his heart on the right side instead of the left.”
“I don’t understand.” I said with my eyes wide open.
“Dextrocardia” Kara put in.
“Exactly,that’s the word for it.”
I turned to Kara,my eyes silently pleading for an explanation.
“Actually,dextrocardia refers to the heart being a mirror image situated on the right side. That’s the simplest of explanations I can give you straight outta Wikipedia.”
“I thought you only stopped at year three. How come you…” Jathniel asked.
“Ask your sweetheart,I read a lot. I still read my medical books seriously even though I’m no longer studying it. I enjoy updating myself.” She smiled. “ I’ll leave you two now. I’m happy for your brother.” She went inside while Niel stared at her till she was out of sight.
“Kara’s a brain.” He remarked.
“Of course she is. She took her studies seriously after she failed her UtME the first time. She became a genius according to Rachel.”
“I see.”
“What happened to your phone? I called till I got frustrated.”
“My dear. This your Niel seated here has suffered. I lost my phone in Lagos because of running left,right and centre to get Elliot to a good hospital.”
“Have you been able to find the person that tried killing him yet?”
“No. Elliot’s hands are not clean Mille,I can see it clearly but he’s forming innocent. I’ll make sure I get to the root of this.”
“Just be careful Niel,please. I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
“I’ll be fine Mille. I came back this morning just to attend the conference. It’s been hectic babe and I’m the very definition of tired.”
“Sorry dear. Let me take you to the guest room so you can have a little nap. No objections sir,you need it.” I used all the energy in me to pull him from the sofa.
