Four suspected kidnappers of a four-year-old-boy, Steve Kanu, in Abeokuta have confessed that a ransom of N1m was paid to them before they released him.
Steve who was kidnapped at his parents’ home at Laderin Estate, Abeokuta, on Monday, November 2, 2015 was fortunately rescued alive last Friday by the men of the Ogun State Police Command in Nsukka, Enugu State.
Dr. and Mrs. M. Kanu, arrived at the state police command headquarters, Eleweran, on Monday with their son in tow and full of gratitude to the Policemen.
The suspects arrested for the crime were named as Kenechukwu Amoke (21), Anayo Amoke (35), Oluchi Asadu (20) and Maureen Uchenna (25).
Maureen, who was a staff nurse in Dr. Kanu’s hospital in Abeokuta for over three years before she resigned in July this year, was said to have been the mastermind of the abduction of Steve with her boyfriend, Obinna Amoke, who is currently on the run.
The nurse said:
“I learnt that Doctor paid N1m ransom to one of our members in Abeokuta before the police detectives arrested us in Enugu.
“I regretted my action, but it was my boyfriend, who wanted to travel abroad and wanted to pay my bride price, that put pressure on me to commit this crime.”
The commissioner, while parading the suspected kidnappers, said the manhunt for Obinna was still on. He said:
“The boy was kept for eight days in Anayo Amoke’s residence in Isale Ibefun in Abeokuta, before he was moved to Nsukka, where they kept him in Oluchi Asadu’s house,” the CP said.
He said he would work with the Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, to ensure that Obinna’s house in the village was demolished.

As the fuel scarcity continues to persist with no solution in sight, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to take urgent steps to put an end to what it called the “mass suffering” of Nigerians.
The NLC said no group of cartel, no matter how powerful, should be allowed to box government into a corner, to do its bidding.
In a press statement entitled: “Fuel Scarcity: Mr. President, Please Stop Mass Suffering of Nigerians”, the NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, said a situation where a few individuals hoarding petroleum products with a view to arm-twisting government to removing subsidy on petroleum products, would be rejected by Nigerians.
Wabba said the NLC would not allow any group to distract it from its struggle to have control over the operations of the sector, especially as it relates to full sufficiency in refining the petroleum products.
The statement reads: “The Nigeria Labour Congress is outraged by the continuing incidences of fuel scarcity, resulting in skyrocketing prices and long queues spreading to different parts of the country.
“We note that this is happening despite assurances from government and its agencies that there is enough fuel being distributed around the country and that citizens need not go into panic buying.
“That the situation has not visibly improved after more than 72 hours of such assurance means that the marketers and other groups that have held the country hostage over the years for their unearned profiteering from the petroleum sector are still determined to continue as if it is business as usual.
“It is completely unacceptable to us that Nigerians are forced to go through the perennial hardship, especially towards the end of the year, and now have to cough out between N130 – N300 per litre of petrol in different parts of the country, instead of the official N87 per litre price.
“This for us shows a clear determination of the unpatriotic operators in the petroleum sector working to circumvent government regulation through blackmail and other unorthodox methods”.
The NLC, therefore, called on government to urgently address the issue of hoarding by marketers and others, accusing them of canvassing for deregulation in which government would hands-off regulating prices of petroleum products.
“Given that petroleum products continue to be the artery of our economy, indeed our existence, it is naïve and foolhardy to expect that government will hands-off the downstream sector and allow for those whose sole purpose is profit-making to take over full control of determining the prices of these critical products.
“They have done this and succeeded in the past, most particularly in the governments of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, through blackmail and deliberate hoarding of petroleum products”, the statement said.
The NLC further appealed to government, through the regulatory agencies like the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), to impose punitive sanctions on the perpetrators of the “artificial scarcity”.
Wabba added that the NLC was prepared to partner with the relevant regulatory and enforcement agencies to enforce the N87 per litre price regime just as he called on state governors to join in enforcing the official price of products in their domains.

Mr Abdullahi Muhammadu, Commandant-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has ordered the deployment of 5,000 personnel and sniffer dogs for the Kogi governorship election.
This is contained in a statement by the NSCDC spokesman, Mr Emmanuel Okeh, and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.
The statement said this was in line with the NSCDC mandate of providing security before, during and after elections.
It said the NSCDC also had the mandate to monitor activities of political parties as well as political actors through surveillance and intelligence gathering.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Kogi governorship election has been scheduled to hold on Saturday, Nov. 21.
The statement assured that robust measures had been put in place to guarantee the security of lives and property.
It quoted the NSCDC boss as charging politicians to play by the rules and not to take the law into their hands.
He advised parents and guardians to caution their wards not to involve themselves in any form of electoral violence, saying that anyone caught fomenting trouble would be dealt with according to the law. (NAN)

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has vowed to resist any form of downsizing in the industry by the federal government and International Oil Companies (IOCs).
While declaring it is not averse to removal of subsidy on petroleum products, PENGASAN said it will not back any policy that will have negative effects on ordinary Nigerians.
The association also called for immediate passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), saying it will save the nation about $15 billion revenue annually as well as address other challenges facing the oil and gas industry.
PENGASSAN national president, Olabode Johnson, made the body’s position known in Abuja at the end of its National Executive Council meeting.
He said the PIB, which has been in the National Assembly for about nine years, will be in the overall interest of the nation.
Johnson, who said PENGASSAN will support any move by government that will better the oil and gas sector, however, stated it will resist deliberate attempts by IOCs to make members redundant.
He also decried the IOCs penchant for bringing in expatriates to take over the jobs of Nigerians in the name of falling oil prices.
The labour leader said: “If our local refineries are working optimally, we can then look and see what subsidy we need. If you say we are consuming 40 million litres, when our refineries are working, the level of importation will be very minimal and that will save us some money for either levels of governance.
“We should also diversify the economy. The government should behave as if there is no oil and gas in the country and focus on other mineral resources and agriculture and therefore remove pressure on oil and gas”.
