Politics › Re: Power Failure At Abuja Airport: Senate Summons PHCN, Julius Berger by executinal(m): 5:46pm On Apr 24, 2012
talk true: Senate yesterday summoned top managements of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Julius Berger Plc and Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) over failure by British Airways to land and disembark passengers for over one and a half hours last Saturday.
Also summoned is the management of the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP).

The airport was in darkness for the duration after four of its power generating sets packed up after interruption from the PHCN.
They are expected to appear before the Senate Aviation Committee to explain why the airport was thrown into darkness for several hours, necessitating the BA flight to hover around Abuja airspace for one and a half hours.

Committee Chairman, Senator Hope Uzodinma told newsmen after a tour of the facilities at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja that the blackout was the third incident in three months.
He described the incident as unacceptable, adding that PHCN retrieved a dedicated line from the airport and gave it to the host community.

Sports › Van Persie Claims Writers' Prize by executinal(op): 12:03pm On Apr 24, 2012
Arsenal captain Robin van Persie has been voted 2012 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association.

The Holland striker, 28, topped the poll of journalists with a landslide victory ahead of Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney in second place and his Old Trafford team-mate Paul Scholes third, with Fulham's Clint Dempsey fourth.

Van Persie's 34 goals in all competitions has helped propel the Gunners into the top four of the Barclays Premier League, leaving them on the brink of Champions League qualification for next season.

Van Persie - last week named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year - will receive the prestigious FWA accolade, which has been running since 1948, at a gala dinner at the Lancaster London Hotel on May 3.

FWA chairman Steve Bates, chief football writer at The People, said: "Robin was the overwhelming choice of our members this season and deservedly so after a magnificent campaign for Arsenal.

"The quality of his goals, attacking movement and consistency in a turbulent season for The Gunners has been eye-catching.

"The considerable size of his majority in the votes cast by our members reflected the general view that he has been the season's most outstanding individual performer."
