GOVERNORS of the South East met in Enugu yesterday behind closed doors in continuation of previous meetings, which reportedly centred around addressing economic and infrastructure development of the region. Although the governors did not address newsmen nor issue a communique at the end of the meeting, the forum was believed to have considered the best ways the states could pool resources to move the region forward. The governors, who met with other elected political office holders were said to have further deliberated on an earlier decision to send a delegation to the Presidency to discuss infrastructure de­ cay especially the bad condi­ tion of federal roads in the South East. They have also expressed desire to discuss the best way to approach recent pro­ tests by pro-Biafra agitation sparked off by the detention of the Director of Radio Bi­ afra, Nnamdi Kanu, just as they urged groups agitating for his release to be cool. A close source revealed that the governors watched a video projection by develop­ ment experts believed to be an economic blueprint to boost South East. Only Governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State alongside Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu were at the meeting. Consider the following: Sir Tafawa Balewa, who was the Prime Minister of Nigeria from 1960 till 1966, was from the core North and he was killed while in office. General Murtala Muhammed, who was Head of State of Nigeria from 1975 till 1976, was from the core North and he was killed while in office. Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who was President of Nigeria from 1979 till 1983, was from the core North and he was removed by a military coup d’etat while in office after which he was detained for two years during which he almost went blind. General Muhammadu Buhari, who was Head of State of Nigeria from 1983 till 1985, was from the core North and he was removed in a military coup d’etat while in office after which he was detained for four years. General Sani Abacha, who was Head of State from 1994 till 1998, was from the core North and he died under mysterious circumstances while in office. Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua, who was President from 2007 till 2010, was from the core North and he died while in office. No one deserves to be killed or to die in such mysterious circumstances and no one deserves to suffer incarceration unlawfully. I am saddened by what each and everyone of these respected leaders suffered and by what they were forced to go through. I deplore murder, violence, bloodshed and the unconstitutional removal of democratically elected Presidents and Prime Min­ isters. I do not relish what happened to any of them and neither do I endorse what befell them. However, it is clear to me, as it ought to be clear to any discerning reader, that there is more to all this than meets the eye. It is not a coincidence. There is a clearly established pattern of sad and unfortunate events here that cannot be ignored or wished away and that must be critically exam­ ined. In short, there is clearly a bigger picture in all this and a concise message that many of us fail to appreciate, acknowledge or recognise.

IS it any wonder that my friend and brother, Governor Nasir El Rufai, once warned the Nigerian military against what he considered to be their excesses in the fight against Boko Haram and told them that “anyone, whether soldier or otherwise, that kills a Fulani must consider it as a debt that will be repaid?” Is it any wonder that in 2001, some unscrupulous and irresponsible leaders in the core North invoked “political sharia” as a secret weapon in their attempt to discredit, destabilise and destroy President Olusegun Obasanjo, a southern Chris­ tian President? Is it any wonder that in 2001, President Muhammadu Buhari, a core northern Muslim, said: “What is the business of Christians if we Muslims chop off our limbs in the name of sharia” and went further by saying that it is his intention and desire “to spread sharia all over the federation.” Is it any wonder that the same man said in 2014 “an attack on Boko Haram is an attack on the North?” Is it any wonder that Governor Bello Masari of Katsina State said that there was a link between Boko Haram and the Fulani militants/herdsmen and that they both “kill people and rob them of their property?” Is it any wonder that virtually every single notable southern leader in our political history that has ever aligned with the North, including MKO Abiola, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Isaac Boro and many others ended up secretly regretting it because after all their noble efforts of regional and ethnic bridge-building, they ended up being cheated, insulted, marginalised, humiliated, maligned, misrepresented, used, dumped, jailed or killed? Worse still in the case of Saro-Wiwa, after he was hanged, acid was poured all over his body in order to remove all trace of him. Is it any wonder that Dr. Junaid Mohammed, one of the leading apostles of northern hegemony, said that Nigerians should “let the Biafrans go” and that “they need Nigeria more than Nigeria needs them?” Is it any wonder that Chief Bola Ige of blessed memory once referred to the Fulani as “the Tutsis of Nigeria” and that Mohammed Yusuf, a leading core northern civil servant, once referred to the Tutsis as “the Fulani in Diaspora?” Is it any wonder that virtually every single courageous, moderate, honest, liberal and truly progressive core northern leader, like Abubakar ‘Dangiwa’ Umar, Nuhu Ribadu, Kashim Ibrahim Imam, Halilu Akilu, Tanko Yakassai, Sule Lamido, Lawal Batagarawa and many others that sought to build bridges of peace and understanding with the South throughout his life and career, that insists on equity and fairness between the ethnic nationalities, that refuses to describe his tribe as the “master race,” that resists racial and religious bigotry, that deplores injustice and wickedness and that stands up against the excesses of his own leaders and people is persecuted, viewed with suspicion, misrepresented and not allowed to achieve his full potentials by the deeply conservative and reactionary leaders of the ultra-conservative core North? The Bible tells us, “God works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform.” When the misguided and ultra-conservative leaders of an ethnic nationality in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic state prides itself on building an empire, enslaving others, occupying their land and hold­ ing on to power by consistently using violence, religion, subterfuge, lies, deceit, manipulation and the shedding of blood, a terrible price has to be paid. God is not mocked and neither does He sleep. He will ask the murderer, where is your brother, Abel, and He will tell him that “his blood cries out to me from the ground for vengeance.” For those that doubt the veracity of my earlier assertion that every single core northerner that has ever ruled this country has either died in office or been removed from power and detained for a number of years permit me to enlighten you. Kindly note the fact that General Yakubu Gowon, General Ibrahim Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who were also Heads of State of Nigeria and who were also from the North were not core northerners but Middle Belters. That is what set them apart and made the difference. We are talking about core northern leaders here and the bitter and tragic end that each and every one of them suffered after being Head of State, President or Prime Minister.

A former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), has linked the renewed agitation for the Biafran state with what he described as the conspiracy of the elite. According to Agbakoba, what the pro-Biafran protesters were agitating for was not the creation of the Biafra state but the government’s attention to the years of neglect and the manipulation of the people of the region by different political leaders. Agbakoba, who suggested that the pro-Biafran protests were being sponsored, warned President Muhammadu Buhari to be on the lookout for the elite who, he said, were working to sabotage his government. According to him, the said elite were dissatisfied with Buhari’s pro-people agenda and were working to sabotage it so that they could continue to enrich themselves at the expense of the less privileged. “The elite include people in high position in the churches, traditional institutions, professions and businesses. They represent a small percentage of Nigerians but exert tremendous influence, with a view to capture the state. “This class is very dissatisfied about the ideological change of government. They see the new agenda as a threat to their privileged position,” Agbakoba said while speaking with journalists last week on the state of the nation. He urged Buhari to address what he called the cracked political foundation of the country handed down by the British, saying it was the only way to address ethnic agitations in the country including Boko Haram and the pro-Biafran agitation.

statement in Kaduna noted
that it was most sad and
unfortunate that 45 years
after Nigerians ended the
war and resolved to unite
for the nation’s progress,
“some people are instigating
innocent youths to stage
irresponsible protest.”
The forum called on Igbo
youths and all Nigerians to
channel their energy into
useful venture rather than
allow themselves to be used
for futile agitation.
The statement read in part,
“The meeting noted with
serious concern the
continued spate of protests
by the members of the
Indigenous People of Biafra
and the Movement for the
Actualisation of Sovereign
State of Biafra in the South-
East and South-South states
agitating for a Biafra
Republic. The issue of Biafra
was settled in 1970 after the
Civil War.
“It is therefore sad and

now united in a democratic
system of governance, some
elements are now busy

tension created by this
unwarranteed protest that
could have some ripple
effects in other parts of the
country,” it added.
The forum also expressed
concern on the alarming rate
of kidnapping of innocent
persons for ransom by some
unknown gunmen in various
parts of the country and
urged the security agencies
to redouble their efforts in
arresting the perpetrators of
this crime and bring them to
justice.

i have always asked myself, what is it that the ikwerres have that other igbos dont have? Is it nearness to the ocean? Thank God we(ndoki) are nearer to the ocean via azumini than ikwerre. Is it oil? The three ndoki LGA of ukwa east(abia),ukwa west(abia) and oyigbo(obigbo,rivers) are very rich in it,infact,obigbo is one of the largest single oil producing LGA in Nigeria.

Well i wont judge the entire ikwerres just because of few riffrafs and online imposters since all my friends ikwerre friends are proud of their identity

First of all, Igbo people don't produce the Oil that runs the nation, you guys need to stop saying that. South south people produce the oil...And they sure don't speak the Igbo language, so how would they go with you guys? Secondly, Yoruba people also have to score higher in cutoff point just as igbo children...And this is because the northern children are a bit behind when it comes to general educational level.

i am from oyigbo rivers state. We produce oil likewise our brother in ukwa east and west lga of abia state and we are igbo. Porthacourt belonging to ikwerres is oil producing and is also and igboland. Ohaji/egbema and oguta lga of imo state were my mum comes from are all oil producing. Anioma in delta state and aguleri in anambra state are all oil producing.

I am asking this because the current agitator for Biafra, Nnandi Kanu, in most of his interviews is always saying that the North can't keep on enjoying their oil. And this makes me think...Is the oil for the South Easterners or for the South South people? I have asked a lot of my friends from the south south (both online and offline) and none of them is interested in leaving Nigeria and being a part of a predominantly igbo speaking Biafra.


Another reason Nnadi Kanu always gives is that Hausa/Fulani are killing Igbo people. I don't know how true that is. All I know is Boko Haram, a terror group in Northern part of Nigeria has been killing NIGERIANS of all tribes and religions.


My argument is...since Igbo people always say they are the most hardworking people in Nigeria (I think this is somewhat true, as I sold CDs and DVDs for about 8 years at a point, and the hustling spirit of igbo people in Alaba always marveled me), then why do they clamor so much for position in the government of the zoo? We all know that even if Fashola becomes the president tomorrow, it won't automatically better my life as a Yoruba man. Most politicians care solely about themselves. So, why can't Igbo people stay with Nigeria, and make their millions from all part of Nigeria as they have always done? If they break free, will they also leave all the parts of the Zoo they have their businesses in?
