Women could be fined for revealing too much flesh. In this image, Washington policeman Bill Norton is seen measuring the distance between a woman's knee and bathing suit at the Tidal Basin bathing beach. His boss, Col Sherrill, who was Superintendent of Public Buildings and Grounds, had issued an order stating that suits not be over six inches above the knee.

An intriguing new picture set reveals what acceptable beach outfits looked like in the period between 1900 and 1922. In 1919, 20 special deputies called "Sheriffettes" were sworn in to monitor the swimwear of the bathers. If a woman was found to be revealing too much bare skin, she could be forced to pay a $10 fine, although many of these modesty rules were lifted by the mid-1920s. A 1921 Hawaiian law was enacted that no one over 14 years of age could appear in a swimsuit unless "covered suitably by an outergarment reaching at least to the knees." Women began to wear towels around their waists or wrap raincoats around themselves. http://mashable.com/2015/05/27/swimsuit-police/#8R1VcEvyUgqd http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4760792/Fascinating-pictures-beach-fashion-changed.html Lalasticlala, Mynd44

A woman in Guatemala had a tumour growing in her uterus for seven years before it was removed weighing an incredible 70lbs (32kg). Doctors in the Central American country performed a complex but successful operation on the 40-year-old. The patient went to hospital with the huge abdominal mass which made her look pregnant with multiple babies and gave her stomach a staggering circumference of 137cm. The woman, who is not named, was diagnosed with a leiomyoma, also known as fibroids a benign tumour that very rarely becomes cancer. However, despite being diagnosed with the problem seven years ago she previously declined treatment due to cultural reasons. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4756672/Woman-looked-pregnant-7-YEARS-70Ib-tumour.html

The Torch Tower is the fifth tallest residential building in the world and stands at more than 330 metres (1,105 ft). It became the tallest residential building in the world in 2011 but lost the record the following year to the neighbouring Princess Tower. In February 2015 hundreds of residents were evacuated from the same building after it was engulfed in flames in the early hours of the morning.

Fire 'spread rapidly' through a skyscraper in Dubai's world-famous Marina in the early hours of this morning. Alarming footage showed flames climbing up the79-storey Torch Tower, a residential building popular with expats in the United Arab Emirates tourism hotspot. Burning debris could be seen spiraling down to the ground below as firefighters desperately tackled the blaze. The same skyscraper was devastated by fire in 2015 and the building's flammable cladding, which was similar to that used in Grenfell Tower, was blamed for fuelling the flames. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4759064/High-rise-residential-block-Dubai-bursts-flames.html Lalasticlala, Mynd44

A ban on travel by U.S. passport holders to North Korea will take effect on Sept. 1 and Americans in the country should leave before that date, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday. Journalists and humanitarian workers may apply for exceptions to the ban, the department said in a public notice. The U.S. government last month said it would bar Americans from traveling to North Korea due to the risk of "long-term detention" there. The ban comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and North Korea, which has been working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the United States. North Korea will become the only country to which Americans are banned from traveling. American student Otto Warmbier, sentenced last year to 15 years' hard labor in North Korea, returned to the United States in a coma on June 13 after being released on humanitarian grounds, and died June 19. The circumstances surrounding his death are not clear, including why he fell into a coma. North Korea has said through its state media that Warmbier's death was "a mystery" and dismissed accusations that he had died as a result of torture and beating in captivity. The State Department issued a notice in the Federal Register on Wednesday declaring U.S. passports invalid for travel to, in or through North Korea. The restriction takes effect in 30 days, and applies for one year unless extended or revoked by the secretary of state. "Persons currently in North Korea on a U.S. passport should depart North Korea before the travel restriction enters into effect on Friday, September 1, 2017," the department said in a statement. Professional reporters or journalists, representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross or the American Red Cross traveling on official missions, those traveling to North Korea for "compelling humanitarian considerations" and those whose requests are "in the national interest" may ask for a special validation of their passports in order to travel to the country, the State Department said. North Korea is currently holding two Korean-American academics and a missionary, a Canadian pastor and three South Korean nationals who were doing missionary work. Japan says North Korea has also detained at least several dozen of its nationals. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-sessions-idUSKBN1AJ026 Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Since these photos were taken, Jamaican police have evicted the Gully Queens from their storm drains. Geoghegan has since found it difficult to contact those he interviewed and photographed, but hopes to return to Jamaica soon to follow up on their stories.
|
As explained in the documentary, Jamaica’s gay population is divided mainly into two groups: the Rich Queens and the Scary Queens. The Rich Queens possess more wealth and stability, thus providing them insulation from the most violent outbursts of homophobia. The Scary Queens, or Gully Queens as they call themselves, are impoverished, often without the support of their families and without prospects offinding a job. With no where to hide, they are constantly subjected to hateful acts of violence, enacted solely on the basis of prejudice and animosity. They live in the dark corners of public spaces, where resources are scarce and danger is a constant threat.
|
London-based documentary photographer and journalist Christo Geoghegan chronicled the lives of these self-described Gully Queens, the abuse they’ve endured, the bonds they’ve formed, and the steps they’ve taken to bring an end to Jamaica’s rampant homophobia.

Daggering is one of the gay and trans youths who, after being expelled from their homes and rejected by their families due to their sexual orientations, took up residence in the city of Kingston’s storm drains, a place they refer to as the gully. “Right now, we all want to leave the gully because you don’t know what might happen,” Daggering continued. “Who will jump down. The gully is cold, mosquitoes bite you. So, in the gully, it’s like hell down there.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/christo-geoghegan-gully-queen-photos_us_57c09c34e4b085c1ff29586f Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Money is scattered across the side of the road after the security van was blown up by the men. It is not known if passing motorists helped themselves after the gang drove off and before the police could arrive and seal off the area to call in a forensics team.

The £1.5million rand raid saw tens of thousands of rands in 50 and 100 rand notes blowing in the breeze on the other side of a fence which was out of reach of the gang. Part of the roof or side of the van was photographed wedged high up in a nearby tree. It is not known if passing motorists helped themselves after the gang drove off and before the police could arrive and seal off the area to call in a forensics team. The gang escaped with cash and firearms belonging to the security guards. Limpopo Police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe said the road would be closed for at least four hours while officers searched for clues to the gang that carried it out. He said: 'There are about 10 men in three vehicles who shot at the van and blew the tyres out to make it veer off the road and then they blew it up with explosives.' The gang escaped in two Mercedes Benz and a BMW with dozens of cash boxes. The Provincial Tracking Team has been called in to try and track the gang who are believed to have struck a number of times in the region over the lastfew months.

Money fell from the sky when a gang of armed robbers blew up an armoured security van to get at the £1.5million in cash locked inside. Ten criminals in three cars forced the Cash Solutions vehicle off the road on the R71 near Gravelette, Limpopo, South Africa by dramatically shooting out the tyres. They then attached explosives to the van then dragged the guards off to a safe distance and detonated the charges blowing the side and roof completely off the vehicle. Such was the power of the explosion, parts of the van ended up at the top of nearby trees. https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2017-08-01-robbers-blow-up-cash-van-in-limpopo/?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C5741760790 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4752962/Money-falls-sky-robbers-blow-security-van.html Lalasticlala, Mynd44

Ishilove:They will think more than twice when they know there's instant death if caught. That's why corruption will never cease in some countries where they just detain offenders for few weeks and recover from them 50% of what they've stolen. |
"Soon around four shots were fired, and people realized that it was done, they rushed to the place and tried to take the body, but the police were able to take the body to the van and drove through the crowd out of the square." Yahya al-Matari, the father of the murder victim, Rana al-Matari, told reporters after the execution he was satisfied. "This is the first day in my life," he said. "I am relieved now." A man convicted of raping and murdering a three-year-old girl was executed in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Monday in front of hundreds of onlookers, the first public execution there since 2009. "Security was very tight, because authorities were fearing a revenge attack by armed men from the Bani Matar tribe to which the girl's family belong," said Reuters photographer Khaled Abdullah who witnessed the scene. The police van transporting Muhammad al-Maghrabi, 41, to Sanaa's Tahrir Square was escorted by five police patrol vehicles. The execution drew a large number of onlookers, some perched up telegraph poles and many watching from rooftops. The crowd started to shout "Allah is the greatest" when Maghrabi arrived." The man was escorted from the van to the middle of the square, and then the place turned to a complete chaos and I fought for a position to take pictures," Abdullah said. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/yemen-man-muhammad-al-maghrabi-rape-murder-three-year-old-girl-machine-gun-paedophile-a7868866.html https://widerimage.reuters.com/story/execution-in-yemen?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C9491709022 Lalasticlala http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4756442/Father-watches-man-murdered-girl-executed-AK-47.html Lalasticlala, Mynd44
