Police pictured at the Sint-Michielskaai in Antwerp, the location of a possible thwarted terrorist attack in Antwerp.

A French Muslim has been arrested after trying to drive a car loaded with liquid gas, assault rifles and knives into a crowd at high speed on a busy shopping street in Antwerp.

Belgian police, who confirmed the bomb squad had been sent to the area, said the car was being driven at high speed and that pedestrians had to jump out of the way to avoid being injured.

Authorities found knives, a shotgun and a gas can with an unknown liquid in the car prompting officers who usually deal with extremist attacks to take over the case.

It comes just hours after three people were killed in London by a terrorist who mowed down pedestrians and cyclists outside the House of Commons before stabbing a policeman to death.



The suspect was said to be travelling in a car registered in France and that it was a red Citroën

One suspect is in custody, according to investigators.

Authorities took no questions in a brief news conference late Wednesday and gave no details on the four victims or suspect.

The Hyundai 4x4 used by the attacker remains at the scene after it slammed into a fence before the attacker got out.

Moments beforehand, officcers could be seen crowding around the injured man, who was shot by a policeman after stabbing a fellow officer outside the Palace of Westminster.

Two knives have were seen on the ground as a man, believed to be the attacker, pictured, was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

Police have now confirmed that he has died.

The head of counter-terrorism at London's Metropolitan Police, Mark Rowley, said four people have died in the terror incident in London, including an attacker and a police officer.



Acting Commander BJ Harrington of the Metropolitan Police, pictured 2nd, warned people to stay away from parts of central London, now on lockdown as officers investigate and guard against any further attacks that may follow.
