1. Agbogbloshie, Ghana

Dubbed “Sodom and Gomorrah” by the citizens of Ghana, Agbogbloshie is the second largest electronic waste processing site in West Africa andimports 215,000 tons of consumer electronics annually. While half of this imported waste can be resold for parts, the rest must be recycled. One of the primary (and most detrimental) methods for recycling the copper from wire cables is to burn off the protective covering. Since the wire cables contain harmful metals commonly lead the result of burning them is the spread of harmful metals into the soil, the fumes of which are also carried over by the smoke in the air during the burning process. These harmful chemicals affect as many as 250,000 people. High levels of lead are known to cause vomiting, muscle weakness, seizures, and in severe cases, comas . The Blacksmith Institute, along with partnering organizations, have implemented wire stripping tools and are currently working on introducing workstations with wire-stripping machines. These corrective efforts are but a few of those already in action. The toxic threat is real and we’ll need just as a great an erosive force to combat it.

2. Chernobyl(Chernobyl Disaster).

Chernobyl was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the city of Pripyat, then located in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union(USSR). An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of the western USSR and Europe. That unleashed 100 times the radiation seen in the nuclear bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, marks Chernobyl as one of the most polluted places on earth.
About 270,000 people live in areas classified as strictly controlled zones. Among the long-term repercussions of so devastating a calamity, thyroidcancer (some 4,000 reported cases), leukemia, solid cancer, and death have been the most prevelant. To help ease the strain on the Ukraine peoples, Green Cross Switzerland has implemented medical, psychological, and educational aid programs as well as medical staff visits to affected sites.

3. Citarum River, The Most Polluted River On The Planet And The People Who Swim There.

At 13,000 square kilometers, the Citarum River comes into contact with up to 9 million people. Both domestic and industrial waste and contaminants are deposited into the river constantly, resulting inhigh levels of lead, mercury, and other radioactive chemicalsin the water. The Citarum is essential one great landfill where hundreds of industrial plants and thousands of people discharge their waste, contaminating the water used for irrigation and drinking, resulting in numerous illnesses. The Indonesian government has implemented a 50 billion-dollar restorative effort to decontaminate the Citarum river over the course of 15 years.

Citarum river is extremely dirty, yet it flows into rice paddies and families there use it for cleaning and cooking, for washing and drinking.

4. Dzerzhinsk, Russia.

Located about 450 kilometers east of Moscow, Dzerhinsk was historically a top site for chemical manufacturing during the country’s Soviet epoch. Between the years 1930 and 1998, about 300,000 tons of toxic waste were deposited into the soil. Due to the toxic levels found in the city’s ground water and air, residents run the risk of eye, lung, and kidney cancers as well as lowered life expectancy to an astonishing 47 years for women and 42 for men. The Russian government has taken measures to close several of the chemical manufacturing plants in an effort to relieve the levels of contamination.

5. Hazaribagh, Bangladesh.

The city of Hazaribagh is home to over 200 leather tanneries within a concentrated area of land, which contaminate the water, soil, and air after 22,000 cubic liters of toxic waste are deposited from these tanneries into the Buriganga river daily. Among the numerous harmful chemicals swimming in the river is hexavalent chromium, which is known to cause cancer. The over 8,000 workers employed at these tanneries are afflicted with rashes, itchiness, and prematurely aging skin, among other diseases.

6. Kabwe, Zambia.

The city of Kabwe was once aggressively mined for lead deposits throughout the 20th century. The mining and smelting operations that took over the city inevitably dispersed large quantities of lead in the form of dust particles to the surrounding areas. Despite the fact that these major mining operations are now closed down the aftermath lingers, affecting children who play in the soil the most. The children of Kabwe have up to 10 times the recommended level of lead in their blood.

7. Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Gold-mining is the source of income for over 40,000 people in Kalimantan, and annually, over 1,000 tons of mercury are released from this process and spread to the surrounding environment. This accounts for 30 percent of human-produced mercury emissions on earth. To help address this problem, the Blacksmith Institute in collaboration with other organizations have introduced educational programs to better train miners to reduce their level of toxic emissions and strengthen their own protection against harmful toxins.

8. Matanza Riachuelo, Argentina

As many as 200,000 people live near the Matanza Riachuelo river in areas considred uninhabitable. That’s because over150,000 industries are currently releasing chemical wasteinto the river. This exposure to toxins has affected the residents near the site with respiratory diseases and cancer. Currently, the World Bank is funding a billion dollar restorative effort to remove industrial waste from the river and improve sanitation in the neighboring communities.

9. Niger Delta, Nigeria.

The Niger River Delta has been a primary site of petroleum operations since the late 1950’s and has experienced almost 7,000 oil spills in about 30 years. The oil and hydrocarbons deposited into the river are known to cause infertility and cancer in humans. These repeated oil spills are attributed to old and poorly constructed infrastructures and general underinvestment in machine and pipeline maintenance. In 2008, the Nigerian government introduced a Petroleum Industry Bill which imposes provisions on the oil industry for its impact on the local communities and the environment. The results and effects of said bill are yet to be determined.

10. Norilsk, Russia.

Historically an immense mining site, from 1935 to 1956, much of the mining in the city of Norilsk was done through the forced labor of prisoners. Today, workers still extract large quantities of nickel, copper, and cobalt. As a result of the mining and smelting operations, up to100 tons of nickel and copper oxidesare emitted into the air every year. For people in Norilsk, this has resulted in numerous ailments and with the average life expectancy of factory workers 10years shorter than the Russian average, the growing health risks are hard to ignore. It’s estimated that over 130,00 of the city’s residents are currently exposed to the harmful chemicals in in the air that lead to increased risk of respiratory diseases and lung cancer.

With oil spills, nuclear plant meltdowns, chemical waste dumped and buried beneath towns, the truly toxic threat of environmental pollution is the stuff of horror stories. Along with the abstract, academic knowledge of the long term harmful effects of pollution that will continue to affect our future generations, we’re also beginning to see the immediately obvious impacts such as diseases, shortened life expectancy, and environmental degradation. A report conducted in 2013 by the New York-based Blacksmith Institute, in conjunction with Green Cross Switzerland two environmental non-profits provides a list of the most polluted places on earth. Apart from increasing awareness of the widespread and spreading problem of toxic pollution, both organizations also offer solutions, suggesting preventive actions to remedy existing toxic threats and, perhaps more effectively, prevent them. This includes financial and infrastructural support to better equip these polluted regions and their communities with more advanced systems of reducing toxic emissions and repairing the damage done. The report estimates that globally, over 200 million people are affected by toxic pollution which is responsible for 23% of deaths in developing nations, with 80% of regularly reported diseases also attributed to environmental risk factors, these being caused primarily by the toxic chemicals released into the environment through industrial waste. And with mostly low-income communities inhabiting these waste-filled regions, it’s not just an environmental issue; it’s unavoidably, a socio-political one. With 33% of diseases affecting children caused by deplorable living conditions aggravated by a toxic and polluted environment, it’s imperative that actions to address and prevent toxic pollution be taken, and while it may seem a tough battle to win there’s hope in knowing that any great, corrective effort first begins with the awareness that it’s needed. The following places listed here have been dubbed by the Blacksmith Institute as “The Top 10 Toxic Threats”, which are notorious for their degraded environment, high level of emissions of toxic chemicals, and the unfortunate symptoms these cause the communities that reside in them.

12. Soccer.

Soccer is one of those games that you’re either mad about. But the game takes physicality to another level, running for over 90 minutes while moving a ball with only your feet and avoiding tackles is no easy feat. With no protective gear, players are at the mercy of ruthless forms of defense including the infamous studs-up challenge and aerial body checking. Concussion, bruises and bloodied limbs, torn ACLs, shin splints etc, are some of the common injuries in soccer. Apart from a widespread occurrence of concussion and sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) among soccer players, the sport also ranks high for the amount of former players who suffer CTE due to repeated concussion. Since 2001, there have been 67 footballers who died while playing a game, died from injuries sustained while playing, or died after contact on the pitch.

This picture does not make sense. I hope those bloggers and picture distorters are not at it again. It might be the angle of the camera but with the length of those rods, the rods should be dragging on the road normally making it difficult for them to enter the car that way.
Ive been trying to figure out how it happened like that but do you know that these rods comes in different sizes, in thickness? Some are 2, 3, 4 times thicker, most especially those used in constructing skyscrapers or bridges.
In the picture, the rods looks very thick making dragging somehow difficult. Far on that truck, like something was holding the rods and that thing broke. The rods will slide backwards, the car was driving so close behind, on high speed, and it pierced through like that.

If the car was parked and truck was making a reverse, the rods wouldn't have pierced through the car like that. Piercing through the front&rear windshields, seats like that. Would have stopped after breaking the front windshield because a truck reversing will move very slowly or what do you think?

11. BMX.

Bicycle motocross, or BMX, is a cycle sport, and there are special kinds of bikes, known as BMX bikes, which are ridden in this sport. Whilethe sport in its basic form involves racing, its offshoots include bicycle stunts on vertical ramp and flatland. It requires the cyclist to perform a combination of acrobatics while he is astride the BMX bike. As the bikers strive to do a trick no one else has ever done before, they are likely to face injuries or even concussions, besides cuts, scrapes and bruises.

10. Rugby.

With 13 burly players on either team smashing against each other for 80 minutes, there’ll definitely be sickening injuries. With the only protection being a mouth guard and spiked boots, players have to carry the ball down the field. Rugby players use their whole bodies to play the game, leading to the controversial use of shoulder barging, body checking and the lifting tackle. These plays contribute to the concussions, torn ligaments, dislocated shoulders and even tetraplegia, that players can end up with. Recent data shows that the repeated concussions also puts players at risk of developing Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), brain damage and dementia. Since 2001, collisions and rough tackles in rugby have led to the deaths of over a dozen professional players.

9. Football.

No list of dangerous sports would be complete without including football. Hard to believe but a century ago, the sport was even more brutal than it is now. Those games often left dozens dead on the field. With rudimentary protective equipment, players had their spinal cords compressed, crushed skulls and broken ribs piercing soft tissue. This was due to the practice of spearing and helmet-to-helmet collisions. The situation was terrible till President Roosevelt intervened and urged teams to curb excessive violence.

While rules have been changed to reduce fatalities, excessive tackles still happen and have led to broken bones, concussion, head and neck injuries etc. In recent times, only nine players have died on the field (but a ton of gruesome life-changing injuries), but there’s a more disturbing trend emerging. Research has found that pro football players are at risk for earlier death and dementia by 10 years, over their peers.

8. Cave Diving.

Cave diving is an unusual sport which involves underwater diving in caves with at least partial water content. Besides the use of regular scuba equipments in specialized configurations, it uses a varied range of equipment, depending on the circumstances. Major hazards of this sport are caused by lighting failure and low visibility, which can lead to separation from the partner. Air loss is another peril, especially because one can't just rise to the surface to catch air, or he might smash his head.

7. Motorcycle Racing.

Sending your body down hurtling down a track at over 100 mph is insane in a car; imagine doing it on a crotch rocket. With only a few layers of Kevlar and a helmet for protection. Broken bones and third-degree abrasions are the most minor of accidents in motorcycle racing. Yet, in what is considered the oldest race in motorcycle history, thousands descend on the Isle of Man for six days, every year. The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy is the most dangerous race on earth. For one, there is no dedicated course. The race snakes through the town on a narrow 37 mile journey, with 250 corners. Riders average 120 mph on public roads with hedges, stone walls, and homes, mere feet away. In its 107 years of existence, 240 riders have died taking part, 48 of them since 2001.

6. Bull Riding.

Bull riding is a sport, in which the rider mounts a large bull and tries to stay atop the bull, while it attempts to buck off the rider. This sport is considered a great favourite with the extremely macho men who like to boast about their high testosterone level and are ready to take on any pain for the sake of it. While the fallcan cause severe injuries and concussions, thebull, which can weigh up to 1800 pounds, may trample the fallen rider. But, for some, beyond the pain and fear lies an art.

5. Street Luge.

Street luge is a lot like skateboarding, except the rider is in a supine position on the luge board or sled, as he dashes down a paved road or course at extremely high speed. The legality of this extreme gravity-powered activity is a shady issue. Participants are required to put onprotective leathers and helmets, or the chancesof getting smashed by vehicles that will most likely not notice the riders, will go higher. The chances of collision on road are high, short of which, only the feet work as brakes.

4. Ice/Mountain Climbing.

It is not too hard to comprehend that mountain climbing essentially involves the risky activity of climbing up and down the highest of natural rocks, i.e. mountains. Every element of this activity is risky. The climber can receive different physical injuries like twisted ankles, sprained muscles, torn ligaments, broken bones, back injury, concussion, or frostbite, during the heavy physical activities or from falls. Weather changes can be lethal, one can lose path easily, and deaths are quite common when they fall off.
