Politics / In Defense Of Choice: Challenging Compulsion In A Democracy by Ezekielibok(m): 7:02pm On Jan 02
While I strive for peace and unity, a recent experience compels me to speak out against the disturbing trend of forced political loyalty in our Oron community. This is not about joining issues, but about upholding the very essence of democracy - the right to freely choose and support the candidate we believe in.

My support for the candidate I endorsed during the Oron Union elections was born from careful consideration and a heartfelt belief in their potential to serve our community best. It was a decision taken after thorough consultation and deep conviction, not coercion or manipulation.

Yet, I have been subjected to unwarranted criticism and scrutiny for exercising this fundamental right. My crime? Daring to back a leader who resonates with not only myself, but also with a significant portion of our youth.

Those who seek to silence dissent through pressure tactics forget that this is not a competition, but a community. There are countless ways to serve, and each individual's contribution, regardless of their choice of candidate, should be valued and respected.

We must remember that even the most celebrated leaders of today once faced rejection and setbacks. President Buhari, Senator Akpabio etc– their paths to success were paved with failed attempts and unyielding determination. Should we then deny others the same right to try, to strive, to learn from past experiences and come back stronger? The inquiry arises: what transgression is committed by endorsing a candidate whom one believes in and who resonates with the aspirations of the majority, particularly the youth?

My role in the Oron Union elections was solely that of a supporter, not a candidate. While I was born in the early 90s, I am confident in my ability to make informed decisions and exercise my democratic right. To those who demand conformity and seek to punish dissent, I ask: Is this truly the democratic spirit we aspire to?

By silencing individual voices, we stifle the very essence of progress. Diversity of opinion is not a threat, but a foundation for growth. Let us celebrate the freedom to choose, to support, and to learn from even those whose paths diverge from our own.

Let us, in the spirit of true community, embrace inclusivity and respect the democratic right of every individual to make their own choices. Only then can we build a stronger, more united Oro for all.

Politics / Oro Rising: A Unifying Breath With Integrity At The Forefront by Ezekielibok(m): 11:28pm On Dec 24, 2023
Oro Rising: A Unifying Breath with Integrity at the Forefront

The air hums with anticipation as Oron Union gears up for its elections. In the midst of the usual campaign fervor, two remarkable voices ring out, not with mere promises, but with a clarion call for unwavering integrity, uncompromising patriotism and a refreshing start for the Oro Nation. This is the pedigree of Dr. Ku'ubra Uya, a man known as "The Unifier," by the majority of Oro young people and Dr. Mrs. Arit Etim, a formidable leader projected for the position of Vice President General 1.

While not running as a joint ticket, both Dr. Uya and Dr. Etim embody the same spirit of integrity, competence, and dedication to Oro's progress. They represent distinct but complementary paths towards a more unified and prosperous future for Oro.

Dr. Ku'ubra Uya: His name is synonymous with courage, character, and an unwavering commitment to building strong representation for Oro people. Ku'ubra is a classic negotiator and a towering social mixer. His choice by the Youths isn't about empty promises; it's about restoring faith in the resourcefulness of Oro's potential. It's about breathing new life into a Nation yearning for revolutionary leadership, transparency, and accountability. Uya stands tall on the pillars of integrity, offering a sustainable way for Oro's survival in the world of inequality.

Dr. (Mrs.) Arit Etim: With her impressive blend of intellect, compassion, and a deep understanding of Oro's needs, Dr. Etim brings a vital perspective to the Vice President General 1 position. Over time, she has been empowering communities, Youths, Students, less privileged, promoting inclusivity, and fostering collaboration within the Oro people of all ages. Working alongside Dr. Uya, promises a future where every voice is heard and every talent is nurtured. Oro deserves the best at this time.

This is a critical moment for Oro. It's time to demand for leadership who would lead with their hearts as much as their minds, who see every Oro citizen as an integral part of a vibrant, unified Nation. So, Oro. Oro let's arise and stop self inflicted marginalisation.

Support Dr. Ku'ubra Uya for President General. His unwavering integrity and commitment to Oro's progress makes him the Unifying Force the Nation seriously needs at this time.

Support Dr. Mrs. Arit Etim for Vice President 1. Her dedication to empowering Student community, the Oro Youths and fostering collaboration within Oro will be instrumental in building a brighter future for all.

Together, these two leaders offer a powerful combination of integrity, vision, and unwavering dedication to Oro's progress. This is not just about electing individuals; it's about choosing a refreshing new direction for Oro. Choose wisely!

Akwa Ibom Assembly Condemns Dilapidated State of General Hospital in Oruko

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has called for urgent intervention at the General Hospital in Oruko, Urueoffong/Oruko Local Government Area. The motion, which was brought by Hon. Precious Selong, was passed unanimously by the House.

Selong, who is the member representing Urueoffong/Oruko State Constituency, said the hospital is in a state of disrepair and is no longer able to provide quality healthcare services to the people of the area. He listed the problems with the hospital as follows:

* Dilapidated structures
* Water shortage
* Epileptic power supply
* Non-functional medical equipment
* Poor health facility
* Shortage of manpower etc

Selong said the poor condition of the hospital is forcing patients to travel long distances to other hospitals, even in emergency situations. He said this is leading to an increase in the mortality rate, especially among pregnant women and newborns.

The House, in its resolution, urged the Akwa Ibom State Hospital Management Board and the Ministry of Health to undertake a visit to the hospital and ascertain the level of dilapidation. It also urged the Budget Office to capture and include the project in the 2024 budget. The House also mandated the committee on Health to embark on an oversight inspection and ensure the implementation of the resolutions.

The motion was received with a lot of support from members of the House, who expressed concern about the plight of the people of Oruko. They said the government has a responsibility to provide quality healthcare services to its citizens, and that the neglect of the General Hospital in Oruko is unacceptable.

The House's resolution is a welcome development, and it is hoped that the government will take immediate action to address the problems at the hospital. The people of Oruko deserve to have access to quality healthcare services, and the government must not fail them.

Engr. Elvis Osung Honours Late Mother with Scholarship Scheme

... Appoints Dr. Monday Dickson as Chancellor

Engr. Elvis Osung, a philanthropist and a prominent engineer who has played active roles in delivering sustainable engineering projects across the globe, yesterday honoured his late mother, Late (Mrs.) Grace Effiong Osung, with a scholarship scheme for indigent students of Oro Nation.

The scholarship scheme, which was inaugurated on Tuesday, May 30, will provide financial assistance to two students from each of the five local government areas of Oro Nation.

Beneficiaries will be selected on merit and will be required to maintain a high academic average.

In his remarks at the inauguration, Engr. Osung said that the scholarship scheme was a way of honouring his late mother, who was a strong advocate for education.

While hoping that the scheme would help to improve the educational opportunities for indigent students of Oro Nation, Osung called on the board to employ a fair and impartial selection process for the beneficiaries.

"My mother was a strong believer in education. She always said that education was the key to a better future.

"I hope that this scholarship scheme will help to make her dream a reality for some of the brightest young minds in Oro Nation", he said.

Speaking at the event, Elder Godwin Okponung, said that the scheme was a "much-needed" initiative.

"There are many indigent students in Oro Nation who are unable to afford a college education, this scholarship scheme will provide them with the opportunity to pursue their dreams."

On his part, the Chancellor of the scheme, Sir. Monday Dickson decried the rate in which Oro students were dropping out from tertiary institutions, due to financial reasons.

According to him "The scholarship scheme is a significant investment in the future of Oro Nation. It will provide educational opportunities to students who would not otherwise be able to afford fees.

"The scheme is a fitting tribute to Engr. Osung's late mother, and it is a testament to his commitment to community development".

He further stressed that Engr. Osung was a true son of the soil who was always looking for ways to give back to his community.

Also speaking, Mr. Sunny Bassey encouraged committee members to show passion for community service.

EMERGING FROM THE SHADOWS: A THUNDEROUS BATTLE CRY FOR FREEDOM AND VENGEANCE

A COMMUNIQUE BY COALITION OF ORO YOUTHS ON THE OBNOXIOUS LEGISLATION AND GOVERNOR UDOM’S CONSENT ON THE ILLEGAL REMAPPING OF AKWA IBOM STATE

DATE: MAY 23, 2023

On May 23rd, 1925, 88 courageous and visionary men joined forces to establish a union aimed at combating oppression, slavery, and marginalization, while fostering community development through education, communal relationships, administration, and commerce. Today, after nearly 98 years, Oro still suffers from severe marginalization. Beyond the realms of underdevelopment and enduring months without electricity, our secondary school students lack an ICT center or e-learning facilities to enhance their education, and the government's presence in our community remains nonexistent since the advent of democracy. As a peaceful and reasonable community, we have watched and hoped for change. Even when our status as an oil-producing community was stripped of its rightful benefits, and our waterways were surrendered through the water resources law, we maintained our composure and placed our trust in the government. We stood firm despite broken promises of mechanized farming, improved healthcare, and accessible roads, even when we were singled out and labeled as "mbon Oron." However, it seems that the government has taken advantage of our commitment to peace. We must remind the government that while we value and “maintain peace”, we will not tolerate injustice and oppression.

Furthermore, it is crucial to note that the remapping process originated from an initial resolution by certain individuals who sought to disrupt peace—a resolution that the court promptly dismissed. Undeterred, they sought to push their agenda through the legislative arm. On April 20, 2023, the governor signed the bill into law. It is against this backdrop that we, the Coalition of Oro Youths, rise as a united force.

Given these circumstances and grievances, we, the Coalition of Oro Youths comprising of all major youth groups in Oro Nation, hereby declare the following resolutions:

1. REJECTION OF THE REMAPPING LAW:
We categorically reject the law for remapping and boundary adjustment that affects Eastern Obolo, Ibeno, Okobo, and Mbo Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State. This law, devoid of popular consultation and the consent of the affected Local Government Areas, aims to marginalize and oppress our communities. We view it as a deliberate and reprehensible attempt to undermine communal ties, disregard the rule of law, and perpetuate oppression.

2. LEGAL INVALIDITY:
We highlight the fact that the law fails to meet the minimum legal requirements for remapping, as outlined in Section 8(4) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The absence of a boundary adjustment request supported by two-thirds of the members of the House of Assembly and two-thirds of the affected Local Government Areas undermines the legitimacy of the remapping exercise.

3. ABSENCE OF DEMAND FOR REMAPPING:
To the best of our knowledge, none of the littoral Local Government Areas—Eastern Obolo, Ibeno, Okobo, or Mbo—has requested a boundary adjustment, nor have their consent been sought. We affirm that the Oro people have neither supported nor initiated any request for selective remapping. The attempt to annex villages from the littoral Local Government Areas into other regions of the state is viewed as an act of greed and a blatant violation of our rights.

4. TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY:
We demand transparency and accountability from the lawmakers and proponents of the law. We seek answers regarding the law’s initiators and their motivations. The lack of sincere answers to these questions raises concerns about the intentions and integrity of those involved.

5. PROTECTION OF COASTLINES AND ECOLOGY:
We emphasize the importance of safeguarding the coastal areas, preserving the ecological balance, and maintaining the tranquility of our beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. Any action that jeopardizes the ecological integrity and the well-being of our intertidal zones will be vehemently opposed.

6. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE:
We draw attention to our history and the valiant actions of our ancestors who defended our territory against encroachments by the British Admiralty in the 18th century. We are resolute in upholding their legacy and protecting our ancestral lands.

7. CALL FOR IMMEDIATE HALT:
We demand an immediate cessation of all activities related to the law and strict adherence to constitutional provisions. We urge the lawmakers to reconsider their position and work towards the betterment of our communities, rather than engaging in actions that sow discord and breed crises.

8. URGENT DEMAND FOR THE IMMEDIATE APPREHENSION OF CONSPIRATORS AND CONSTITUTIONAL VIOLATORS:

In light of the audacious transgressions committed by those who shamelessly endorsed this law, brazenly disregarding the laws of the esteemed Federal Republic of Nigeria, we vehemently demand the Inspector General of Police to promptly apprehend and detain all individuals involved in this unholy act without any delay. The individuals who must face justice are as follows: the Clerk of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, the Surveyor General of the state, along with the dishonorable members representing the following constituencies: Eket State constituency—David Lawrence, Oruk Anam State constituency—Udo Kierian Akpan, Etinan State constituency—Bar. Anefiok Dennis Akpan, Onna State Constituency—Otuekong Nse Essien, Nsit Atai State constituency—Mark Esset, Mkpat Enin State Constituency—Victor Ekwere, Ibiono Ibom State Constituency—Godwin Ekpo, Nsit Ibom State constituency—Otobong Bob, Itu State constituency—Kufreabasi Edidem, and Uduak Udoudoh representing Ikot Abasi-Eastern Obolo. Furthermore, as the expiration of his immunity on May 29, 2023, looms near, we fervently insist on the immediate apprehension of the governor of Akwa Ibom state. We demand swift and decisive action to restore justice and uphold the unwavering integrity of our great nation.

In conclusion, we stand united in vehemently rejecting the law for remapping and boundary adjustment affecting the littoral Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State. We call upon all relevant stakeholders, including government authorities, to respect our rights, safeguard our coastlines, and uphold the principles of justice and fairness.

Politics / Robinson Uwak's Indelible Imprints During Tinubu's Campaigns: A Retrospect by Ezekielibok(m): 10:05am On May 16, 2023
Robinson Uwak has been a household name in Akwa Ibom State. His popularity has spread to the length and breadth of the state, especially in Oro Nation, where he served the Federal Constituency as Member of Parliament in the 7th Assembly. His bold imprints were huge on the ground and denial is impossible.

Although he left the Green Chambers since 2015, Hon. Robinson Uwak cannot escape being featured in the good books of his people. His strength lies in his capacity to address the core needs of his constituents. In doing so, he often reaches out to stakeholders to ventilate ideas before stepping into the ring for implementation.

Uwak's sense of recognition is his greatest strength. As representative of his people, he knew that his principal objective was fulfilling the purpose of his presence, at the Chambers. By so doing, he believed that accommodating the views of his people was paramount. This informed his overwhelming admiration. It also made him a figure, attracting limitless followership, thus validating his value for social capital.

Recall in the last presidential campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Akwa Ibom state. Robinson Uwak as a member of the presidential campaign, he demonstrated his street credibility potentials, through the power of mobilization. As well captured in the media, Robinson Uwak singlehandedly mobilized over 7,000 foot-soldiers as support base for the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu presidency. The endless croud of people that processed with him, arrayed in T-shirts and other customized fabrics, compacted the over-filled 30,000 capacity Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Having been drafted into the Campaign Planning Directorate of the Presidential Campaign Council of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2022, Uwak worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the event. With over 10 political support groups, including Friends of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Akwa Ibom Progressives Mandate, Team Tinubu/Shettima 2023, Robinson Uwak Vanguard for Tinubu, Progressive Canvassers Initiative, among others, the ex-lawmaker took the stage by the storm.

While speaking with newsmen recently, Hon Uwak had said that his positive energy and drive to helping the Directorate rave up the engine of the campaign, informed his appointment's. He described Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a man of capacity and that Nigeria desired none other than Mr Tinubu.

Hon. Uwak who was a member of President Buhari’s 2015 and 2019 presidential campaign council, recalled how he served with the likes of Mr Boss Mustapha, Hon. Abike Dabiri. Gov. Babatunde Fashola, Barr. Ismael Ahmed, among others, to get the job done. As he did twice for Buhari, so has he done this once for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the just concluded general elections.

Indeed, the strong force demonstrated by Hon. Robinson Uwak during the election was a class of its own. It is true that Mr Uwak is not a backbencher in politics. He occupies the centre stage when issues of political strength are discussed. Hence, looking at the energy with which he served during the last election, one would be fair to conclude that Robinson is a man of deliberate and strategic planning. This remains incontestable as he had left indelible imprints during the Bola Ahmed Tinubu presidential campaigns.

The Okossi-Udung Ukpong-Otieke Road being sponsored by the former Member, Oro Federal Constituency, Hon. Robinson Uwak, would soon be completed, as contractors are working day and night to deliver on deadline.

An unplanned visit to the site by a team of reporters, on Friday, May 12, showed an exceedingly high level of progress as the thick layered road had workers in their number, going about their normal business.

Residents of the area who spoke with newsmen, including Mr Frank Edem and Edu Ating were full of praises to Hon. Uwak for his humanitarian disposition, saying the road when completed would be a link between the communities.

The duo said the Okossi-Udung Ukpong-Otieke Road, which links Okobo and Urue Offong Oruko Local Government Areas of Oro Nation, would save the people, the stress of traversing the area through rough and narrow road.

They prayed God's continued preservation of Robinson Uwak, for bringing such a wonderful invitative to the doorsteps of the masses.

The people also thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for his interest in serving the masses and in extending development to the part of the country.

Speaking with journalists on his inspiration to embark on the project, Hon. Robinson Uwak, said it was in his character to attract development to his people.

He recalled his meritorious service, while he was the Member of Parliament, which made the Council of Oro Traditional Rulers to decorate him with a honorary chieftaincy title of Uduonyi Oro.

Thanking the residents of the area for their cooperation, and for protecting the tools of the workers, Uwak assured the people that the Asiwaju Bola Tinubu's administration would be a blessing and would yield enormous dividends of democracy to them.

2023: Robinson Uwak Shines at A'Ibom Presidential Rally

*invades stadium with over 7,000 youths

It was pomp in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital on Monday, January 30, when a former Member of House of Representatives, Hon Robinson Uwak , again showed his capacity in youth mobilization, during the APC presidential rally at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Hon. Uwak retained his well-known character of acceptability and followership, when he led over 7,000 youths and women of Akwa Ibom State to receive the APC Presidential candidate in the 2023 General Elections, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Drafted into the Planning Directorate of the Presidential Campaign Council of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to be part of the planning process, Uwak showed his high degree of competence, after stampeding the Stadium with his followers.

With over 10 political support groups, including Friends of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Akwa Ibom Progressives Mandate, Team Tinubu/Shettima 2023, Robinson Uwak Vanguard for Tinubu, Progressive Canvassers Initiative, among others, the APC chieftain became a shining star, receiving resounding cheers of approval as he processed with endless crowd of followers.

In a chat with journalists, Hon Uwak said the planning directorate of the campaign council was aware of his capacity, competence and acceptability, as a grassroots general, and thus didn't expect any less from him.

Describing the incoming President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the most competent, most prepared and most efficient candidate with the wherewithal to coast to victory, Uwak noted that it was only normal that he made his mark as one of the loudest supporters of Mr Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

"Our party is favourably disposed to carry the day in the upcoming presidential elections. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is a well-known leader and kingmaker in Nigeria. No one else has his track record.

"Tinubu is that man that won't look at your background. He is a leader who won't check your status to give you the privilege of service. He has made thousands of Nigerians, irrespective of their background.

"A dispassionate, detribalised and independent minded thinker, blessed with experience and a standing record of excellent performance as governor of Lagos State, Tinubu is contesting this election against his records and the facts would speak for itself in the next few weeks.

"So, we are here to show our support and to speak very loud that APC is in form, well coordinated, well placed and readily disposed to celebrating victory", Uwak said.

Recall that Hon. Uwak who was a member of President Buhari’s 2015 and 2019 presidential campaign council, had worked with the likes of Mr Boss Mustapha, Hon. Abike Dabiri. Gov. Babatunde Fashola, Barr. Ismael Ahmed, etc, to enthrone President Muhammadu Buhari.

Again in 2015, Hon. Robinson Uwak led one of the biggest mobilization in the history of Oro Nation, his federal constituency in Akwa Ibom State, leading the party to win a seat in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

Speaking with newsmen in Uyo, Hon Uwak said the planning directorate of the campaign council was desirous to take advantage of his positive energy and drive to help rave up the engine of the campaign.

He said the APC presidential candidate was a man of capacity with the requisite potentials to lead the country to higher heights.

Hon. Uwak who was a member of President Buhari’s 2015 and 2019 presidential campaign council, recalled how he served with the likes of Mr Boss Mustapha, Hon. Abike Dabiri. Gov. Babatunde Fashola, Barr. Ismael Ahmed, etc, to work out the victory of the current President.

It would be recalled that in 2015, Hon. Robinson Uwak led one of the biggest mobilization in the history of Oro Nation and indeed Akwa Ibom State, gathering an unprecedented momentum which saw the APC clinching a seat in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in one of the state constituencies in Oro Nation.

Many observers still believe that Hon. Robinson Uwak who was also the candidate of the APC for Oro federal constituency seat, won the March 28, 2015 election overwhelmingly but was denied victory by the then power mongers in the state.

Politics / PDP Support Groups In Uyo Seek Suspension Of Southern Zonal NVC, Dan Orbih by Ezekielibok(m): 12:11pm On Oct 04, 2022
A coalition of support groups of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Uyo Akwa Ibom State has moved against the National Vice Chairman, South South Zone, Chief Dan Orbih, seeking his immediate suspension by the National Working Committee, NWC.

The coalition, through a press release on Tuesday, said the NVC had severally indulged in anti-party activities, causing confusion and distraction in the party.

The groups alleged that Orbih was a spy who was working against the interest of the party and called for his immediate suspension.

The release reads thus in parts: "We frown at some activities that is drawn to our notice which is not in trandem with values and objectives of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, perpetrated by the National Vice-Chairman of the South-South Zone, Chief Dan Orbih.

"However, we would have ignored such impermissible character, but for the sake of the unsuspecting members of the public who might be inclined to believing him because of his position in the party, it is pertinent we let the public know that:

"1. Chief Dan Orbih has dragged our great party to court and has made himself a willing tool to cause confusion, discord and plunge the party into disrepute. This is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated by same minds whose dream is to see that the party regains power and redeem Nigeria from the bondage caused by the ruling APC.

"2. It is reported that he is planted by enemies of our great party to cause confusion, distraction; and to divide the united PDP family in the South South Zone, hence reducing our chances of victory in the zone and indeed Nigeria ahead of next year's general elections.

"3. He has failed in his immediate task of unifying the party in the South South, instead creating unnecessary tension, confusion and faction amongst members who look up to him for direction.

"4. As a party man and a major stakeholder, he is expected to project, protect, promote and defend the party which he subscribe to an oath of allegiance through his office as an NWC member, who is obligated to defending the party at all time. Unfortunately, he has gone contrary by consistently blackmailing and dragging the party in the mud and it's members in the public, through his words and actions which has subjected the party to immense ridicule by members of the public and bought our credibility into serious doubt.

"5. There have been unconfirmed reports of financial mismanagement of party funds and executive high-handedness (some of which are currently being investigated) by Chief Dan Orbih, which has obstructed the progress of the party and rendered it unable to fulfill its financial obligations and promoted executive rascality.

"6. Chief Dan Orbih has been indicted in the well documented, albeit embarrassing debacle of allowances paid to members of the NWC by the party which has seemed to put the party in bad light in the eyes of Nigerians who have hitherto seen the PDP as the only credible alternative to the failure of the APC and has erode the confidence imposed on the party by Nigerians.

OUR RESOLUTION

"Having objectively outlined the unwarranted action of the National Vice Chairman South South, Chief Dan Orbih, we the Coalition of PDP Support Groups in Akwa Ibom State hereby demand his immediate suspension from the NWC of our great party and be brought to face the disciplinary committee. This will serve as a deterrent to others who may follow suit or service as a willing tool in the hands of individuals who have sworn to see the party fall in their mission to redeem Nigerians from current hardship. This will also redeem the party from already disrepute he has brought her into and let the party focus on the major tasks ahead."

Politics / Open Letter To President Muhammadu Buhari. Re: Constitution Of Nddc Board by Ezekielibok(m): 11:25am On Jul 11, 2021
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT GENERAL,
ORON UNION

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI

RE: CONSTITUTION OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD OF NDDC:

Setting The Records Straight

The attention of Oron Union, the apex socio-cultural organization of Oro people has been drawn to a misleading and provocative letter on the aforestated subject matter written by Ekid People's Union to the President and published in some national dailies. The said publication is not only characterised by half truths and outright falsehoods, it is riddled
with inconsistencies, illogicalities, distortions and barefaced misrepresentations. Ordinarily, we would have ignored the tantrums and
lies contained in the said petition challenging the right of Oron Federal Constituency as the largest oil producing community in Akwa Ibom State.

For the avoidance of doubt, what is politically known as Oron Federal Constituency is composed of five littoral Local Government Areas which are all oil and gas producing. The Local Government Areas are - Mbo,
Okobo, Oron, Urueoffong/Oruko and Udung Uko. The oil producing status of the five Local Government Areas of Oron Federal Constituency was confirmed with legislative backing by the National Assembly through
a Resolution passed on Wednesday 16th May, 2012.

The said Resolution was conveyed by the Clerk of the National Assembly to the Secretary to
the Government of the Federation(SGF) through a letter dated 23rd May, 2012 and referenced NASS/CNA/105/VOL. 17/116 (See photocopy of the Resolution attached).
Acting on the Resolution of the National Assembly, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) sent a letter dated 9th July, 2012 and referenced SGF. 15/T/693 to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for implementation.

It is incontestably on record that there are nine oil companies operating in Oron Federal Constituency, namely-

1) MONI PULO PETROLEUM DEVELOPMENT LTD (OPL 230)

2) ADDAX PETROLEUM DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LTD(SINOPEC) (OML 123)

3) SEVEN/ UNIVERSAL ENERGY STUBB CREEK (OML 14)

4) SOVEREIGN /NEXEN /ORIENTAL ENERGY (OML 115

5) ORIENTAL ENERGY (OML 67)

6) SHELL PETROLEUM DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LTD( OML 14)

7) AMALGAMATED OIL COMPANY OF NIGERIA (AMOCON)

cool TOTAL E&P (OML 101 and 102

9) EXXONMOBIL

Despite being the largest oil producing community in Akwa Ibom State, Oron Federal Constituency has never enjoyed a full term on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). From the year 2000
when the Commission was established, no Oro man was appointed into its Board until 2013 when Engr. Etim Inyang Jnr was appointed Akwa Ibom State Representative. Unfortunately, that tenure was cut short in
2015 and he was replaced by Mr. Samuel Frank of Eket Federal Constituency. It is instructive that he was not replaced by another person from either his native Mbo Local Government Area or Oron Federal Constituency.

Interestingly, Ekid People's Union never protested this development because it benefitted them. The next time anyone from Oron Federal Constituency was appointed into NDDC was in 2020 when Barr. Efiong
Akwa was appointed into the Interim Management Committee (IMC). In effect, Oron Federal Constituency is yet to enjoy the benefit of a full term in a substantive position on the Board of the Commission. It is also important to note that Eket Federal Constituency had already produced a full term State Representative in the person of Barr. Bassey Dan Abia, the same Barr. Bassey Dan Abia later became Board Chairman and subsequently Managing Director of the Commission. Mr Ibanga Etang of the same Federal Constituency served as Executive Director, Finance and Administration of the Commission.

Moreso, Mr. Godwin Eyo Moffat and Imaobong Inyang of the same community had previously served as State Representatives in the
Commission. It is pertinent to state that all the names mentioned above are indigenes of the Ekid speaking part of Eket Federal Constituency and by extension, members of Ekid People's Union.

It is laughable that Ekid People's Union is protesting the possibility of a simultaneous appointment of two persons from two different Local Government Areas into the Board of the NDDC, whereas two blood brothers of Ekid origin from Esit Eket Local Government Area - Barr. Bassey Dan Abia and Pastor Godwin Mofatt had once simultaneously occupied the posts of Board Chairman and Akwa Ibom State representative on the Board of the Commission. This is either a case of
hypocrisy or amnesia.

In a fruitless attempt to mislead Mr. President and unsuspecting Nigerians, Ekid People's Union disingenuously listed Oil Producing Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State as Ibeno, Eket, Esit Eket, Onna, Eastern Obolo, Mbo, Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin and Okobo. They dubiously omitted Urueoffong/Oruko, Udung Uko and Oron Local Government Areas from the list. They even went ahead to allocate spurious oil production percentages to each Local Government Area while giving humongous 26% and 20% to Eket and Esit Eket Local Government Areas respectively of Eket Federal Constituency. In the figment of their
imagination, land logged Eket and Esit Eket Local Government Areas purportedly produce a combined 46% of the total production output of Akwa Ibom, a littoral State whose oil deposits are more than 90% offshore.

If the land logged Eket and Esit Eket Local Government Areas were oil producing, Akwa Ibom State would not have lost its oil producing status when the obnoxious onshore/offshore dichotomy was introduced by the administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

Moreover, on July 10, 2012, the Supreme Court ruled that seventy six (76) oil wells which were subjects of a dispute between Akwa Ibom and
Cross River States belonged to Akwa Ibom State. Considering the fact that it is Oron Federal Constituency that shares maritime boundary with Cross River State, the oil wells are now owned by Akwa Ibom State by
virtue of their location in Oro waters.

It is a well known fact that Eket's only valid but fragile claim to being an oil producing community is its historical relationship with, and geographical proximity to Ibeno Local Government Area. It can be recalled that the present Ibeno Local Government Area, an oil producing and littoral community was a part of the old Eket Local Government Area. That relationship with Ibeno automatically conferred an oil producing status on the land logged Eket with the corresponding benefit of hosting a housing estate and the now abandoned airstrip. Ordinarily, with the creation of Ibeno Local Government Area, Eket had ceased to
be an oil producing community. One then wonders where it gets the 26% oil it claims to be contributing to the State.

It is noteworthy that the oil producing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District is made up of three Federal Constituencies, namely Eket, Ikot Abasi and Oron. A review of the spread of NDDC Board appointments among these federal constituencies shows that out of a total of sixteen (16) NDDC Board appointments made in Akwa Ibom State between 2000 and 2021, Eket Federal Constituency takes a whopping eleven (11) slots, Ikot Abasi, three(3) slots while Oron Federal Constituency takes a meagre two(2) slots. Out of the two Board appointments which came to Oron Federal Constituency, one was a State Representative who spent about two years in office while the other is a member of the Interim Management Committee (IMC).

In conclusion, it is clear that the petition by Ekid People's Union is spurious, mischievous, misleading and lacks merit. In view of the fact
that there's no known oil company operating in the environment of the petitioner (Ekid People's Union), its petition is both overreaching and unjustifiable.

Curiously, Oron Federal Constituency with nine(9) oil companies operating in its territory that contribute over 80% of the total oil
production output of Akwa Ibom State has been at the receiving end of unwholesome political marginalisation in terms of appointments into NDDC Board. Time is now ripe for this ugly situation of imbalance to be
redressed by giving Oro its due in terms of appointments into the NDDC Board in the interest of equity, fairness and justice.

Yours Sincerely,
Bishop Etim Ante
