After serving for 23 years at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), 10 of which as Deputy Governor Economic Policy and one time Acting governor of the apex bank, Dr Mrs Sarah Alade bade an emotional farewell to the bank on Tuesday.

Speaking at the send-off dinner organized by the members of the Economic Policy Directorate of the CBN, governor of bank, Mr Godwin Emefiele described Alade’s departure as “not very happy” for him because Sarah Alade was not just a friend but a colleague and a moderating force who pulled him back from losing his cool during tense moments at the bank.

Emefiele described Alade’s 23 years at the bank as excellent and a good representative of ladies at the CBN, noting that it will be difficult to fill the vacuum her departure will create.

The CBN governor commended Alade for bowing out when the ovation was loudest and thanked her for contribution to learning in the apex bank and outside. The bank he said will continue to pray for her in her private capacity and will also seek her expertise from time to time to guide them.

Dr. Sarah Omotunde Alade was appointed Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on 20th February, 2014. Prior to this time, she had served as Deputy Governor (Economic Policy), Central Bank of Nigeria from 26th March, 2007.

Dr. Sarah Alade commenced her working career in 1977 at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Ilorin, Kwara State. In 1991, she joined the University of Ilorin as a Lecturer in the Department of Accounting and Finance. She joined the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1993 as an Assistant Director in the Research Department where she served as Head, State Government Finance Office (1993-1996), Head, Federal Government Finance Office (1996-2000) and Head, Fiscal Analysis Division (2000-2004).

Dr. Alade has served on the teams on major economic policy studies, and has been involved in the preparation of Central Bank of Nigeria’s Monetary and Credit Policy Proposals over the years. She was actively involved in the drafting of the Medium Term Economic Programme (MTP) for Nigeria and the IMF staff Monitored Programme/Standby Arrangement.

Dr. Alade was appointed Director, Banking Operations Department in May 2004. In that capacity, she served as Chairman Board of Directors, Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) as well as Secretary, National Payments System Committee (NPSC).

Dr. Alade was a member of the Technical committee of the Vision 2010 and currently a member of the Technical Committee of Vision 2020 and member of the National Economic Management Team (EMT).

As Deputy Governor, Economic Policy, Dr. Mrs. Alade superintended over the Economic Policy Directorate, comprising the Research, Monetary Policy, Trade and Exchange, Statistics Departments and Financial Markets Department. As Chair of the Monetary Policy Implementation Committee (MPIC), she interfaces with operational departments and coordinates technical inputs for the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

Dr. Alade, who is a member of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), has several publications to her credit and is currently carrying out research into Interest Rate Policy and Monetary Policy Implementation in Nigeria. Dr. Mrs. Alade is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Operational Research (NIOR), Association of National Accountant of Nigeria.

In February 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Alade as Acting Governor of the CBN to oversee the affairs of the bank from February to June 2014.She is the chairman of the board of directors of the Financial Market Dealers Quotation-Over the Counter (FMDQ-OTC), the African Finance Corporation (AFC) and the Nigeria Export Import Bank (NEXIM). Sarah Alade has several publications to her credit.

TRAGEDY struck on Wednesday in Plateau State while the entire Government House was thrown into confusion following a sudden death of the state Commissioner for Urban Development, Architect Sam Galadima.

A source close to the government revealed that Galadima along with other commissioners and political appointees had filed out this morning at about 7:30am for routine physical exercise as directed by the governor to keep them fit and mentally alert.

It was learnt that in the process of the exercise Architect Galadima slumped and was rushed to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Media, Hon Daniel Manjang confirmed the death.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission has seized 220 flats , located in 20 estates , allegedly belonging to one Sanusi Mohammed , a former aide to ex -Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State.
It was learnt that 165 rounds of ammunition, a pump action rifle and other weapons were found in some of Mohammed ’s properties located at GRA , Bauchi .
A source in Bauchi told one of our correspondents that the ICPC made the discovery following a tip - off by a whistle - blower.
He said , “About 10 days ago , we received a tip- off from a whistle -blower about the lifestyle of one Sanusi Mohammed , a former aide to former Bauchi Governor , Isa Yuguda.
“We traced 220 flats in 20 estates to him . The houses range from two- bedroom to three - bedroom flats. Inside some of the properties , we discovered four sophisticated guns with 165 rounds of ammunition, five exotic cars and 15 new air conditioners. “We believe the air conditioners were donated to the Bauchi State Government by China .
“We also recovered some cash as well as 25 designer watches and 20 bales of brocade . ”
It was learnt that Mohammed was arrested by the ICPC and quizzed but was later released on administrative bail.
One of our correspondents visited the residence of Mohammed, a former Senior Special Adviser on Special Duties to Yuguda, twice but was told he was not at home . He was told that the ex - special adviser said he would call him but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report .
When contacted on the telephone, the spokesperson for the ICPC, Mrs . Rasheedat Okoduwa , said she could not speak on the matter .
She said , “According to the ICPC Act , we are not allowed to divulge details of investigation . I cannot deny or confirm any story. In any case , anyone who is under investigation is presumed innocent until proved otherwise.”
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which is also investigating Yuguda , had sealed his multi -million naira mansion at Sir Kashim Ibrahim Street, GRA , Bauchi .
A committee set up by the current Bauchi State Government to carry out forensic audit of all major contracts awarded by the past administration from June 2007 to May 2015 in the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board , Ministry of Local Government Affairs , Bauchi Specialist Hospitals , Ministries , Departments and Agencies , had, in January , asked Yuguda to account for over N 212bn expended by his administration within the period under review .
Over N 100bn was alleged to have been mismanaged by permanent secretaries , commissioners and aides to the former governor .
Yuguda appointed 20 Special Advisers , 94 Senior Special Assistants and 810 Special Assistants.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is once again ready to draw a battle line with the federal government over government failure to implement the terms of agreement with the union, and continuous payment of half salaries to the Polytechnic workers.

The National President of the union, Comrade Usman Dutse told newsmen in Abuja at the weekend that the union can no longer guarantee industrial peace in the nation’s Polytechnic sector, saying the condition of members of the union was going from bad to worse MN on a daily basis as a result of neglect by government.

Comrade Dutse said ASUP members can no longer bear the hardship brought to them by government as a result of receiving salaries in fraction since 2016, adding that even though government promised to address the challenges in the sector which started since January 2016 till date, the situation is getting worst with an increment in the quantum of cut.

He said the union will be holding its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting third week of March 2017 to deliberate on the way forward, stressing that “apart from the outstanding challenge we have with government, there are new development that crop up last year. This is the issue of shortfall in personnel, from January 2016 we started observing shortfall in our personnel this led to our members collecting fraction of their salaries with the promises that it would be ratified.

“They told us by January this year the matter will be resolve, but it has not changed. But in February, we were told the situation is getting worst because the quantum of the cut has increase significantly and it would create more hardship and sufferings for our members.

 “So we want to use this medium to tell government that we have been patient enough as we have been suffering and smiling for too long. And we also want to warn that if these issues continue, we cannot guarantee industrial harmony in the Polytechnic sub sector of the education system.

“Government should keep to their word by fulfilling their promises. This is our right because we have worked for it. Anytime we start agitation, they will talk about no work, no pay. So we want to assure them that if they continue cutting our salaries, we too will cut our services because for every service we render, we deserve to be compensated.

“We are all aware that the economy hardship in the country is biting and so if you get less than what you use to received, the situation will be worst for you. So sincerely, we want to tell government to give us what we deserve and make sure that our members do not suffer any longer because we are not going to allow that to continue. We are going to take action that will protect and defend the interest of our members.
