Can there be a case where more than 3 countries qualify from a group? I mean if every team in a group makes 4 points , will they all qualify considering the best loser proviso? @one mopol, Groups A & C are the tightest though It's hard to predict now. Perhaps after the second round matches we may get a clearer picture. |

Siasia takes blame, defends Ighalo
Flying Eagles coach Samson Siasia has accepted responsibility for the team's poor showing so far at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in Egypt.
Siasia's team have lost their two games against Venezuela and Spain, failing to score in the process, and the former Nigeria international says he had very little time to build a good team. "I know that three months to the World Cup was quite a short time but I thought I could try some things to make it happen. But it didn't happen. "We had a lot of issues like players not coming to camp on time and all that but I am not going to blame anybody about anything. It is all my decision to come back and whatever happens I think it is all my fault," Siasia said. The Flying Eagles have also failed to find the back of the net despite creating a truckload of opportunities, and although the coach came down hard on his strikers immediately after the Spain loss, he was quick to defend captain Odion Ighalo, who has been disappointing so far, and his decision to keep faith with the misfiring forward. "I think our captain is one of the best players we have in this tournament but he is just having a bad tournament. When you have strikers that can score goals but fail to do so in two games, it becomes a problem. "If you believe in strikers sometimes it works out but this time around I think it is not working out. Ighalo is the biggest striker we have around and the smaller ones couldn't have done better any way. "What I did was to take chances but it did not work this time around and I accept responsibility for what happened," Siasia stated. With four best losers advancing after the group stages, Siasia and his wards will hope that they can sort out their scoring problems against Tahiti, and pray that other results go their way. http://www.kickoff.com/static/news/article.php?id=11341 This is better from Siasia. Just what I expected and simply what we have all been saying. |

Last train calls for goalless duo Tahiti and Nigeria have similar objectives going into their Group B finale at Cairo's International Stadium on Thursday. While the Nigerians need a big win to press their claims for a place in the last 16, Tahiti are looking to collect an unlikely three points and sneak in through the back door themselves. The game Tahiti-Nigeria, Cairo, Thursday 1 October, 18:45 (local time) The stakes Though logic dictates that both sides are staring elimination in the face, the Nigerians can at least harbour realistic hopes of scoring a big win and sneaking into the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams. To do that, however, they will need to improve the wayward finishing that afflicted them in their opening two games, in which they failed to score. For their part the Tahitians are still in with a mathematical chance, but simply making life difficult for their opponents would represent an achievement in itself. The stat 24 - The number of years since Nigeria recorded their first win over an Oceania side in the competition. By way of coincidence, current coach Samson Siasia was a member of the side that defeated Australia 3-2 on that occasion at USSR 1985. The words "We are well aware of the differences between the two teams on an individual level, but my players have been gaining in confidence despite the results and they know we can still qualify if we beat Nigeria. Of course it's going be very tough to do that, but anything can happen in football." Tahiti coach Lionel Charbonnier "We have absolutely no margin for error now. We need to start doing all the things we've failed to do so far, and that's winning and scoring goals. And even then that might not be enough. So what we need to do first and foremost is concentrate on getting the win." Nigeria coach Samson Siasia. http://www.fifa.com/u20worldcup/matches/round=253217/match=300090158/preview.html |

Sports › Re: FIFA U-20 World Cup: Nigeria Vs Spain (0-2) On 28th September 2009 by FBS: 10:09am On Sep 30, 2009 |
How deadly was Van Basten prior to and after Italia 90? Mind you word was that the team had some internal problem. These boys are young and they are on the center stage. If they cannot do it now, I'm sorry it may be too freaking late. Do you get my point?
Van Basten's talent was already noticed at a young age and he was called up for the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship. He made his senior debut that same year. At the UEFA Euro 1988, van Basten scored a total of five goals, including a hat trick against England, the winning goal in the semi-final against West Germany, and a spectacular volley in the final against the Soviet Union. He was the tournament's top scorer and was the only player to score more than two goals.
Yes, things may not go well, but at least you will see the"touch" of a finisher there. Forgive me but I'm yet to see it. If you say the strikers are good . . .its ok. I will take your word for it. But you will also agree with me that it will make everyone of us happy if they start scoring, innit? meaning that, no one is against these players. If they have the talent, this is the time to show it. |

SMSguru: They were all ready to frustrate Siasia. They are all laughing at him now because they never wanted him to succeed but he who laughs last laughs best.
Siasia will certainly laugh last and shame all his destructive critics.
I won't tell you what happened before and during those two matches until after the tournament. You don't have to tell us what happened before and during the two matches. We all saw what happened. It's really funny why y'all taking this as if someone is attacking Siasia. Show me a single post on this thread saying, Siasia is a bad coach! You won't find such. But take sentiments aside if a coach comes out and say "My strikers were asleep" what does that tell you? It's either they are NOT good enough or they couldn't live up to the expectation or well, they are yet to show up. They have one more chance (and also depending on what happens in other matches. How pathetic is that?). . .we will all find out soon! |

one mopol: If our first match had been against tahiti, we sure would have seen a better FE by now. For their age and exposure the boys seem to be playing under a lot of pressure, hence a first goal even against the weakest side in the world would help shore up more confidence for the strikers in front of goal. Reports have it that fatai is an exceptional striker that the coaches expected to shine in the competetion.
The truth is we may not get up to 8 goals past tahiti like spain and venzuela did. Tahiti will atleast be more cautious in their defending now, besides they had 2 red cards against venzuela. I just believe 5 goals might just be enough to get us through. Reports? Can you post them online for us to read? IF, maybe. . .are you saying the quality of the opposition should determine our strength? |
