@ FBS

You are missing the point. We are not saying NIGERIA played well against TAHITI, what we are saying are as follows:

1. Goals of 20-0 or 50-0 will not make any difference to our cause. Our objective is to qualify for the next round, and for that they needed a win of 5-0 minimum.

2. In football, if your opponent decide to place all their men in front of goal, there's no way you can score. When BARCELONA played against CHELSEA during the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Semi-finals in April/May 2009, the match ended in a goalless draw. We all saw clearly that BARCELONA came out to play football, but CHELSEA was defending right, left, center therefore not given room for BARCA to penetrate. I remember PEP GUARDIOLA (Barca's coach) was dismissive of CHELSEA's performance saying they played negative football.

Hope you get the point now. TAHITI did not come to lose that match. Their goal was to frustrate NIGERIA and damage our qualification credentials. They fought dirty.
Any difference from saying that was our worst performance till date? Forget the scoreline abeg. It was more than expected.
You are clearly missing the point. Chelsea and Barca and two completely different clubs (no need to go into details) but I make it bold to say that playing for clubs is not the same as playing for your national team. Swimming is NOT necessarily the same as Deep sea diving. Do you understand what I mean?
@FBS

Consistency is key here. When they lost you never said they played well, you had every reason to explain that since they did not score they were woeful. You only blamed the ref a bit thats all.

Now they have managed 5 goals past TAHITI and by your assessment , that is the worst performance (May be worse than losing). Someone came now to say they played well against spain and venezuela , but yeterday they played badly and you are saying that is what you expect people to say. HOW?
Apparently you did not follow or read my previous posts and in that case I demand an apology. cool grin
If anything, I believe I'm one of the few (or maybe many) who still want this boys to progress and show the world the very best in them because in case you don't know, last night maybe the end of the road for most of them. However, that is not to say that I'm impressed with their performance and being the person that I am, I call a spade a spade.
You will agree with me that on the overall balance of play our first two matches were "better" but we "lost" and against Tahiti we just had to win.
Winning by 20 goals would have settled a lot of nerves because by winning THAT BIG, you are setting a record. And if by chance they do not progress, there will be something positive to remember. As it stands, I'm afraid, the future looks bleak for the FE.

You just said it. Thanks.

Came out more determined. . .stayed back more determined.
Are you saying they didn't do same against Venezuela?

Arsenal have a history in the CL even if its recent history, we also have European history in case you don't know having won the UEFA Winner's Cup. Our history in the premier and english leagues as well as the local cup competitions is something the Chelsea wannabes can only dream of.

We are competitive right now on all fronts, as our record in the UCL in recent times is only surpassed by a few clubs of which Bayern is not numbered among.

You can be content with being a big fish in a small pond of your bundesliga, but your team's stature in European affairs and your league's status contracts with each passing moment and at present you are simply a mini fish in a micro pond.

And i will simply repeat myself, Venezuela had space to play against Tahiti in their (tahiti's) third, Nigeria did not.
You folks make me laugh honestly. Answer the question, how come Venezuela had the space to play against Tahiti and Nigeria did not? Because they came out more determined against us? mehnnnnnnnn, I rest my case.
If you are ready to label failure a wonderful display simply because they beat Tahiti, na you sabi. I rest my case.

saworoide:
The boys played better against Venezuela and Spain but they lost. The performance against Tahiti was poor but they got close to the desired result. However, if we do advance, they need to do something drastic as there are no Tahitis left in the round of 16. I just hope they do not take us further only to disgrace country big time against a more serious opposition.
Thank you. This is what I've been saying all along.
Bros na wa o. So you now  mean they played better when they lost those two matches?
There is about no differrence between a +2 and +20 for the FE now, reason being that of four teams we were hoping would lose their last match, egypt had the highest goal difference of +2 which would have dropped to +1 or below if they lost yesterdays match.

For the others Cameroon -1,costa rica -2, hungary - (neutral), which means that the only way any of them can qualify ahead of us is if they make 4 points by getting a draw.

One the Nine man issue, yes if is was bad they scored only 1 goal with 9 men , it then means they scored 4 goals with eleven men. So someone else can decide to give them credit four doing 4 goals in the first half and not blame them for just 1 goal in the second half.

On the tactical side however when TAHITI was reduced to nine men, they sacrificed their attackers and asked everyone to fall to defence hence, our team still had thesame number of defenders to contend with(if not more) as in the first half.

We played well against Venezuela and Spain but did not win. We needed 5 goals against Tahiti and got it. END OF STORY.
You guys should remove sentiments from this discussion ok? Thank you.
Now, when SE drew against Tunisia, did they play well or bad?
Brazil (U-20) played a goalless draw with Czech Rep. Tell me who played better?
In our first match (first half) against Venezuela . . .how do  you rate our performance? What about the second half?

Besides, who said we needed ONLY 5 goals against Tahiti? That was the minimum requirement to have any chances but no one ever said we shouldnt or couldn't have gotten more against a team that had 9 men?
If you ask me, I honestly think Tahiti won last night. Sounds ridiculous innit?
If you say the boys played well especially in the second half, then I'm sorry no point discussing this topic further. How can you see right and call it left.

Not excusing the finishing of the our boys but against Spain and Venezuela , the tahitian boys came out to play. Against Nigeria they just sat in front of their goal. 8 men crammed into a penalty is tougher to score against than 10men who come out to play and give you required space.
If that was not an excuse tell me what it is?
They also played against Venezuela with 9 men and still conceded 8 goals. Venezuela you will agree with me are a weaker team compared to Spain, innit?

@TexMex,

You know we all saw the boys played and we are by no means trying to shout Siasia and his boys down.
Agreed, a win is a win but even before the match I said that Tahiti should not be the yardstick for rating their performance as we all knew that Nigeria would win it. Forget those you thought they wouldn't. They were only joking.
What we are saying is this, how good do you have to be to score 10 goals against 9 men in a match that is a must win for you? How good do you have to be to covert 5 chances out of 31?
Ok, Chrisantus is injured, are you now saying there are no other strikers in the country? give me a break abeg.
Did you see their wayward shooting?
Osanga had 3-4 good assist in the first half but turned to a complete waste in the second half. How do you explain this? Have they no idea of what is at stake?
Look, I support both the FE and SE but let the truth be told, last night was the worst performance in this tournament.
Sometimes, criticism should and does act as a form of support because if you fail to condemn such displays then believe me, there will be no improvement.

PS: Goals difference could have been +5. Don't you think so?
Sports › Re: Nigeria Vs Tahiti (5-0) Thursday 1 October 2009 by FBS: 6:57am On Oct 02, 2009
The FE found themselves in such a position due to lack of goals and if you don't score you cannot win matches. Why is this very hard for some people to understand?

They played against 9-man Tahiti and yet they could only score 1 goal?

Forget what the commentator is saying that we are the best team. Didn't we all watch the match? One question, how do you judge the best team? I'm pretty certain you know the answer.

In football, finding the back of the net is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. Passing to one another is ONLY part of it.
