PetsAmazingly Rare: Crow Hitching Ride On Flying Eagle (photos) by fctguy(op): 9:33am On Jul 04, 2015

Phoo Chan was photographing a bald eagle hunting for food in Seabeck, Washington, when something very curious and highly unusual happened: A crow approached the flying bald eagle from behind, landed on its back and hitched a free ride.

Being in the right place at the right time, Chan managed to click off a series of once-in-a-lifetime photos of the rare event in nature.

“At first I thought the crow was going to chase away the eagle,” Chan told Daily Mail. “I have seen crows harassing a hawk by swooping back and forth in order to drive it away from their territory. I was completely awed to see the crow actually land on the back of the flying eagle.

“It was as if it was taking a short break and at the same time a free ride.

“What’s more surprising was the eagle didn’t seem to mind and kept flying as if nothing happened.”

“Eventually the crow flew away and the eagle continued to hunt for its breakfast,” he said. “They both flew in different directions and it looked like they became friends.”

PoliticsIt’s Time To Move On, Atiku Tells Tinubu, Other APC Leaders by fctguy(op): 8:23am On Jul 04, 2015
A former Vice President and chieftain of APC, Atiku Abubakar, has urged leaders of the All Progressives Congress to shift from “extreme positions to a centrist one for the interest of democracy and the party, the new administration and the country at large”.

https://s6.postimg.org/dgyi9i0i9/atiku.jpg

The former Vice President made the call Thursday against the backdrop of the APC NEC meeting in Abuja on Friday, 3 July.

A statement released by his media office in Abuja on Thursday, 2 July quoted the former Vice President as calling for the concentration of positive energies on building unity, cohesion and harmony among party leaders and other stakeholders.

“We can resolve our differences when our leaders individually and collectively shift ground from extreme positions and move to the centre in the interest of our party and our country.”

Atiku, who was outside the country to perform Lesser Hajj (Umrah) in Saudi Arabia, said that he was deeply concerned that, soon after capturing power, the APC is torn apart at a time more energy is needed to attend to the objectives of the change agenda for which it was voted into power.

The APC has been rocked by crisis over the election of National Assembly leaders.

Atiku is believed to supports the emergence of Senate President, Bukola Saraki, against the wish of the party’s leaders, including the chairman, John Oyegun, and a former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu.

The former Vice President said it was high time the party overcame its current crisis of confidence arising from the National Assembly election of principal officers.

He said the current blame games targeted at individuals was an unnecessary diversion of energies at the expense of the urgency of the mission of the party to make life better for Nigerians.

According to the former Vice President, the vilification of individual party leaders and members in the face of challenges facing the country was painful to him, adding that the party should learn the lessons and move ahead.

While restating his commitment to the party and its change agenda, the former Vice President advised the party leaders not to allow people of bad faith to fuel division and acrimony among the party, adding that all positive energies should be directed towards sustaining the morale of the voters who look forward to the APC to make their lives better.

He reminded party leaders that any division could be exploited at the expense of the party. He extended his goodwill to the party for successful deliberations and assured the party of continued support and loyalty at all times.

AgriculturePhotos - Rubber Tapping In Nigeria by fctguy(op):
Rubber is grown in Edo, Delta, Ondo, ogun,, Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Ebonyi and Bayelsa States where the amount of rainfall is about 1800 mm to 2000 mm per annum

https://s6.postimg.org/jlgdbywwh/rubber_tapper.jpg

Natural rubber performs three main functions in our national economy; these are the provision of raw materials for the agro- based industries, it provides foreign exchange earning and places Nigeria in the world map as a net exporter of rubber and lastly, it offers employment to a sizeable segment of the Nigerian farming rural population.

https://s6.postimg.org/s4zr9q58x/Rubber_plantation_5.jpg

Natural rubber takes five to seven years before the commencement of tapping.
Tapping is defined as the controlled wounding of a matured rubber tree with the aim of extracting from it the economic fluid called latex while at the same time ensuring that the economic life of the tree is preserved.16 to 25 years( age of plantation) is considered economical and if not rehabilitated would lead to decline in yield hence reduction in income.

https://s6.postimg.org/uau2488pd/rubber_products.jpg
It is unfortunate that this art of rubber tapping has become obsolete and relegated to oblivion because Nigeria embraced the sudden riches of the black gold. We must go back to our roots of cultivating the soil.

AgricultureThe Forgotten Groundnut Pyramids Of Northern Nigeria (Photos) by fctguy(op): 5:37pm On Jul 03, 2015
The groundnut pyramids of Kano were a sight to behold and told a wonderful story of agricultural sufficiency and of a fruitful nation. It revealed a country that knew the way to sustainable development, through agriculture, self sustainability and hard work.

https://s6.postimg.org/axykk7tox/groundnut_pyrammid.jpg

Over the years Nigeria has gone away from farming as we started to over rely on oil, a resource with a finite life shelf. The land of Nigeria is blessed, sow a seed and it will surely grow. We have the potential to be the food basket of all of Africa. When we produce our own food as we used to do in the past to a larger degree than we do today we can rest assured that no matter the global economic outlook, inflation would always be under control because we would have more than enough internally generated food to feed the population. As our imports grew and grew so did inflation.

https://s6.postimg.org/5l9q635sh/Ground_nut4.jpg

https://s6.postimg.org/hpozn2ioh/groundnut3.gif

It is appropriate to look back and remember the things that made us great back then and agriculture was certainly one of them. As the picture shows, the groundnut industry alone provided employment of many youths, youths today are easily enticed into militancy because of the lack of jobs yet we have resources to create thousands of jobs off the God given fertile land we sit on.

https://s6.postimg.org/o4slxhes1/groundnut1.jpg
They were viewed as both a tourist attraction and a symbol of wealth. In the 1960s and 70s, as production in Nigeria shifted from agriculture to oil, the groundnut pyramids disappeared.

I am reflecting on the Groundnut Pyramids of Kano and I’m wondering; would we be able to recreate something like this again?

BusinessCBN Alleges Illegal Trafficking In Foreign Currency Across Nigeria’s Borders by fctguy(op): 6:05am On Jul 03, 2015
AS the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) battles to arrest the waning value of the Naira against major currencies of the world, particularly the United States Dollar; the British Pound Sterling and the Euro due to scarcity of the foreign exchange to match the high demand locally, it has announced that some unscrupulous Nigerians have been arrested trafficking in large volume of forex across the Nigerian borders without declaration to the appropriate authorities.

https://s6.postimg.org/9valwg6q9/Emefiele_CBN.jpg

As at yesterday, the Naira was trading between N225 and N230 to a Dollar both at the interbank and the Bureau de change segments of the market.

This is owing to dwindling forex exchange from crude oil sales, Nigeria’s main product.

The apex bank yesterday issued a stern warning to the Bureaux De change operators to be reminded that they are duty bound not to sell forex either by cash or electronically to any customer beyond the recommended threshold of $5,000.adding that the operators must also adhere to rules under which the sale must be carried out.

The alert from the apex bank yesterday said: “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to the misunderstanding arising from its circular in respect of import items recently classified as “Not Valid for Foreign Exchange” in any of the segments of the Nigerian foreign exchange market. “

It continued: “The misconception has to do with the fact that some importers believe that they can access Bureau De Change (BDCs) segment for funding of those classified items.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Central Bank of Nigeria has directed that BDCs are not authorised to fund import transactions in any form whatsoever, either by cash or wire transfer.

Accordingly, authorised dealers are hereby barred from effecting wire transfers from the account of their BDCs’ customers henceforth.

“The bank however, stated that the BDCs are only authorized to deal in foreign currency cash and to sell not more than US$5000.00 to an individual customer and strictly for the following transactions: i)Business Travel/Personal Travel Allowance ii) Monthly mortgage payment iii) School fees abroad iv) Credit card payment v) Utility bills vi) Life insurance premium payment

“Meanwhile, the apex bank has noted the unwholesome practice of movements of huge foreign currency cash across Nigerian borders by individuals and corporate bodies without compliance to extant law of declaration to the appropriate authorities. The Bank is already collaborating with other relevant agencies of government to ensure compliance to the provisions of the law, “ the alert further stated.

The Guardian’s findings at the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) headquarters yesterday confirmed the development.

A very senior Comptroller, who confided in The Guardian on condition of anonymity, said several seizures and arrests of currency traffickers have been effected particularly at the airports.

The officer however denied knowledge of the CBN’s latest alert, promising to find out details from the desk officer.

It would be recalled that recently two children of former Governors of Jigawa and Osun States were caught with huge sums of hard currencies at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport and the Aminu Kano International Airport respectively.

PoliticsArmy Not Owing Troops Operating In N’east, Set For Week-long 2015 Celebrations by fctguy(op): 5:55am On Jul 03, 2015
THE Chief of Army Staff, Lt. – Gen. Kenneth Minimah, has said the Nigerian Army is not owing troops involved in the ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the North-East their allowances.

Minimah, represented by the Army Chief of Civil Military Affairs, Maj.-Gen. Donald Oji, made this known while briefing newsmen on the activities lined up for the 2015 Army Day Celebrations (NADCEL) scheduled to hold from July 1 to July 6.

https://s6.postimg.org/nmf2ynvo1/Soldiers.jpg

According to him, the allowances of the troops are being promptly paid, and the soldiers are adequately taken care of. “The Nigerian Army is not owing any soldier any allowance, every soldier is paid his allowances as at when due and the soldiers are well taken care of. The main focus of the Army has always been to maintain the territorial integrity of the country, and safeguard the lives of law-abiding and loyal citizens.”

He said that the 2015 Army Day Celebration with the theme: “Equipping the Nigerian Army to enhance Operational Efficiency in Combating Threat” would be celebrated low key. “The choice of Maiduguri to host the closing activities of NADCEL 2015 was informed by the need to further raise the morale of our troops in the area of operation by showing solidarity to them,” the Army boss said.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Minimah also noted that the theme and concentration of activities in Maiduguri, were informed by the srelocation of the Military Command and Control Centre (MCCC) by President Muhammadu Buhari. “It is also to further reassure the people in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria, particularly Borno, of the renewed determination of the Nigerian Army to end the insurgency in that zone,” he said.

He said the army would use the NADACEL week to reflect on its achievement or otherwise in the previous year, for more effective planning and performance in the next year, based on the lessons learnt from the previous year’s activities.

As part of activities for the celebrations, he disclosed that wounded soldiers in the NA 7 Division Hospital in Maiduguri, would be visited, while Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state would also receive free medical treatments. Minimah listed other activities lined up for the week to include Juma’at prayers on Friday, July 3, at all the Nigerian Army Formation headquarters nationwide and an inter-denominational church service to hold on Sunday, July 5, at all formations and units of the Army.

During the celebrations, there will be a two-day free medical services for the IDPs by the Nigerian Army Medical Corps. ‘’There will also be wreath-laying ceremony at the Military Cemetery, and visit to hospital patients at the 7 Division Hospital and Medical Services. The grand finale of NADCEL 2015 will be the Chief of Army Staff’s address to troops and decoration of troops with medals.”

HealthLagos Urges ‘highest Possible Hygiene Standards’ To Prevent Ebola Resurgence by fctguy(op): 5:48am On Jul 03, 2015
FOLLOWING reported resurgence of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in some neigbouring West African countries, including Liberia and Sierra Leone, the Lagos State government has asked residents to maintain adequate personal and environmental hygiene at all times to prevent re-entry of the disease into the state and the country at large.

A report by Agence France Presse (AFP) confirmed yesterday that two more cases of Ebola have been confirmed in Liberia. A teenager was reported to have died from the viral infection on Sunday in Liberia.

Liberia had been declared Ebola-free more than seven weeks ago, just like Nigeria was declared free in October 2014. Liberia Ministry of Information said the two new cases were in Nedowein, the same village where the teenager died. Liberia’s authorities quarantined the area after the boy’s death and said his funeral was carried out safely.

Health official, Cestus Tarpeh, told AFP that the pair had been in physical contact with the 17 year old before his death. He added that a herbalist who had treated the boy had evaded the authorities and was on the run. It is not clear how the teenager who died was infected.

There has been some confusion about whether one or two extra cases have been confirmed. People are infected when they have direct contact through broken skin, or the mouth and nose, with the blood, vomit, faeces or bodily fluids of someone with Ebola.

Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Modele Osunkiyesi, yesterday outlined strategies put in place by the government to prevent resurgence of the disease in the state after being certified free of Ebola on the October 20, 2014, by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Osunkiyesi told journalists that the government, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, is maintaining relevant surveillance through Port Health Services and community surveillance activities in all local government areas.

While noting that prevention of Ebola remains a shared responsibility by all citizens, Osunkiyesi stated that although there has not been any reported case in Lagos State or Nigeria, there is need by residents to take responsibility for their health. She urged residents to observe the highest possible standards of personal and environmental hygiene through regular washing of hands with soap and running water; avoiding close contact with people who are sick; ensuring that objects used by the sick are decontaminated and properly disposed of, and avoiding touching or washing of dead bodies if not trained to do so.

Osunkiyesi explained that the Ebola disease can be spread through close contact with the blood, body fluids, organs and tissues of infected animals, and handling sick or dead infected animals like monkeys and bats.

https://s6.postimg.org/43ahpawwh/Ebola_Virus.jpg

According to the permanent secretary, “Early symptoms of EVD include fever, headache, chills, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, backache, and arthritis. Later symptoms include bleeding from the eyes, ears and nose, bleeding from the mouth and rectum, eye swelling, swelling of the genitals and rashes all over the body that often contains blood. It could progress to coma, shock and death.”

Osunkiyesi said there is no specific treatment for EVD, stressing that infected persons will need to be admitted into the hospital for specialized care and treated in isolation. She listed those at the highest risk as health-workers, families and friends of an infected person in the course of feeding, holding and caring for them.”

She advised Lagos residents to remain calm. “Your government remains committed to protecting your health. Health workers are also enjoined to keep observing the universal safety precautions when dealing with patients. For more information or clarification about the disease; please call 08023169485 or 08052817243”, Osunkiyesi said.

CrimePhoto - Housewife Dumps Day old Baby Into Toilet! by fctguy(op):
Residents in Okpoko of Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State were, on Thursday, shocked when the news broke that a housewife in the community, names withheld, had dumped her newborn baby into the toilet.

She was said to have a protruded stomach, a peculiar nature that made many people in the area, not to be aware that she was pregnant.

She decided to dump the newborn baby into the toilet, to save her the agony of nursing a baby, which, she said, could disturb her business.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that when a member of the family, her brother-in-law, wanted to use the toilet, he discovered that water could not flush the waste, as his faeces remained floating.

Her brother-in-law, a source revealed, therefore, decided to deep his hand into the toilet, and discovered, to his surprise, that a placenta had been dumped into the toilet, a situation which made him to scream, attracting other residents to the scene, who in utter disbelief, removed the lifeless baby from the toilet.

When the whole family met shortly after the incident and summoned other family members, some of them saw traces of blood stain on the woman’s clothes, the wife of their elder brother, but she refused to give details of the bizarre act, and even denied knowledge of what happened.

She was thereafter taken to a maternity home where it was confirmed that she had given birth to a baby, but when the husband was contacted, he said his wife was in police custody and declined further comments.

PoliticsDon’t Cut Civil Servants’ Salary, Labour Tells FG by fctguy(op): 8:56pm On Jun 21, 2015
Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has cautioned the Buhari- led Federal Government against pay cut for civil servants as part of the moves to reduce the cost of governance.

In a statement in Lagos by the National President, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, and the Secretary-General, Comrade Alade Bashir Lawal, the ASCSN stated that it is criminal to contemplate cutting the salaries of civil servants.

“Any attempt by the new government to reduce the salaries of workers will be viewed as an invitation for war by the labour movement. As we speak, many states owed civil servants bulk of monthly salaries and other rightful entitlements and yet, these workers are expected to come to work by magic, feed their families, stay healthy, pay children school fees and rent”, the statement said.
