Visa update

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The British Deputy High Commission in Lagos is currently experiencing a backlog in processing visa applications due to severe failures in their Communications Systems. They are working hard to fix the systems problems, clear the backlog and resume normal service.

Following these technical problems the VACs in Victoria Island and Ikeja have been closed from accepting visa applications till further notice.

The VACs in Abuja and Ibadan are still fully operational and you can make your application there if you need your visa urgently especially in case of a medical emergency.

They appreciate your patience and understanding at this time.

This Day (Lagos)

Lagos

Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, came alive last night when music and fashion industry icons from across the world kicked off the THISDAY Music and Fashion Festival with their scintillating stage performance.

Abuja residents who had been waiting for the show for weeks started trooping to the Central Business District in Abuja where the THISDAY Dome is located for the concert as early six o'clock yesterday evening for what was billed as the greatest show ever to be staged in the city.

Security was on hand to ensure orderliness in spite of the large turn out of people running into several thousands. Dignitaries from the public and private sectors were also present for the epoch making event.

The show started with comedian par excellence, Basket Mouth thrilling the audience with his rib cracking jokes which kept them asking for more.

The first act of the night, Caribbean Pop star, Rihanna sent the crowd into a frenzy as she sang her first hit which brought her international fame, 'Pon de Replay' with her powerful vocals and electrifying dance routine.

Rihanna showed Abuja residents what has kept her on top of the charts by reeling out hits after hits from her various albums. 'Turn me On Boy', 'Shut Up and Drive', two of her most popular hits had the crowd yelling for more.

Her rendition of Bob Marley's classic, 'Is This Love', got the audience singing along with her enthusiastically and drowning out her performance. But the ecstatic response was like a drug for Rihanna who gave them the thrill of their lifetime.

Just when it seemed like she was retreating, Jay-Z joined her and spurred the crowd into leaving their seats. The duo fed the crowd with Rihanna's biggest hit to date and obviously a crowd favourite, 'Umbrella', which stayed atop the US music charts for several weeks after its release last year.

Jay-Z, who was performing for the second time at the THISDAY Music and Fashion Festival, stayed on and proved why he has remained a favourite of music lovers in Nigeria over the years.

He performed his hit single, 'Show Me What You Got', which showed that the Hip-hop/Rap music genre definitely has a huge fan base in Nigeria.

Perhaps missing his longtime heartthrob Beyonce, to whom he recently got married, he gave a one sided rendition of their duet, 'Crazy in Love'.

After Jay-Z's performance, the R&B/Pop crooner and ladies idol, Usher had the audience eating from the palm of his hand with his popular hits and incredible footwork as he danced on the stage tirelessly.

As he sang his new single hit from his latest album, 'Love in the Club', the audience went wild singing and dancing along to his performance. All modesty was thrown to the wind as everyone reveled in the moment.

In attendance were the Minister of the FCT, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar and his Minister of State, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, along with other members of the federal cabinet.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Dimeji Bankole, Senators Gbemi Saraki and Smart Adeyemi, who represented the Senate President, several members of the House of Representatives, former National Labour Congress president, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, members of the diplomatic community and other high ranking government officials, were also at the show, live and present.

The Chairman/Editor-in-Chief of THISDAY Newspaper, Mr. Nduka Obaigbena thanked the FCT Minister who made it possible for him to get a good location for The Dome which was put up in just two weeks.

The fashion show which was to parade supermodels Naomi Campbell, Alek Wek, Oluchi, and designers - Chris Aire and Ozwald Boateng would be held today at the same venue from 7 - 9 p.m. Fans are allowed to re-use their tickets.

Earlier in the day, some of the world stars participating at the THISDAY Music and Fashion Festival joined the administration of the Federal Capital Territory in its bid to protect the environment through a planting campaign targeting one million trees to make the city green.

British supermodel, Ms. Campbell and bespoke fashion designer, Oswald Boateng, were among the stars who planted trees at the Abuja Botanical Garden yesterday.

Accompanied by Obaigbena, the supermodel expressed her delight to be a part of the laudable initiative which is meant to combat the consequences of climate change on the planet.

Campbell who is an ambassador of the United Nations on Climate Change decried the widely held notion in Europe about Africa being a land of poverty, where famine and epidemics ravage the continent.

If your British, you would only have the option of North Ireland anyway beucause you have the wonderful NHS, lol
I think your question should be what the best hospital to have my child in the UK?? Were do you have family that can support you during this time that should be a factor.
Further,Why would your brother in law suggest ireland, something sounds fishy here??

Let  start off  by  saying  what  are  you talking about. What  has  the  job  you do  got  to do  with anything. Even the Queen is  feeling  the pressure  of  the  credit  crunch.

I  tell you straight, I  was  born  in the UK(lived  and  work in Nigeria, USA and  other  Europe counties) and  I  have a  very good job in top FTSE  company. I  work  hard and  I  have  been  bless  by God.  I  no get problem of visa.

I have  seen a difference in London over the  last 15 years and  trust me my friend  it getting worse.

People are still  coming  to UK  in there  thousands and  I wish them luck.  Let  them come,  it  good.  My dad  help so many  people  (family and  friends ) come to the UK. The  reason  he  use  to do this was  he  said  let  them come and work and help there  own  family. After all his name is not  Bank of  England. When  you  send  money  to people, they rely on you too much.

London,is  hard  work.

I  remember years  ago someone  said  to me  if  you  can make  it  in  London, you can make it  anywere.

The  advantages of London  are as  follows,
It is  very  diversity lot of  people  from  different  walks of  life.
You  have Peckham,Dalston, Brixton which create a  sense  of  community.

Calling  cards-cheap international cards what  would  nigerians  do  with out  corba, nigeria tel, unity
You have the NHS,  don't knock  when I lived  in the  US that  when I apperiate  it.
The  government helps  you  out  when you  fall on  hard times.
You can fly  to  anywere in  the  world from London
Free  transports  for  the  under  18 and  over  65
Free schooling
Opportunities  are  there  for  everyone  to  take

Disadvantages,

High  cost  of  living-  house price  to buy  and  rent  sky  high
Transport  cost- they are  having  a  laugh
London life is  destorying  famlies, parents are  overworked.
Petrol  cost is  high
We  are not in our  motherland
Gun crime  is  on the  up

Nigerian  in UK needs  to stop  showing  Nigerians  at  home  that  it  easy because let  face it, it  is not. There  a credit  crunch on.

Here’ s a chance for aspiring models to achieve that life long dream, as the search for Nigeria’s best model 2008\2009 has began with the first lap of screening of the Nigeria Model Awards 2008 coming up in Benin & Abuja on Thursday 26th & Saturday 28th of June. The next screening after Benin & Abuja will be Lagos which is scheduled for the 5th of July.

The Nigeria Model Awards 2008 comes up on the 26th of July at the Muson Center. It’s organized by Legendary gold Limited in collaboration with Ford Models New York. The winner of the NMA will be picked by Robert Knapp, Chief Scout of Ford Models who flies to Lagos from his New York base.

The winner of NMA joins 53 other girls from 53 countries to compete for the Ford Super Model of the world contest in New York City. Prizes ranges from $250,000, $150, 000, & $100,000 worth of modeling contract for the top 3 winners .There is also $50,000 contract for 5 other girls, Also Maybelline New York gives additional girls exclusive global contracts worth $100,000 each.

The Ford Supermodel of the World Contest is the biggest and most reputable models contest in the World.

Ford Models was ahead of its time when it launched an International Model search in 1980. In the last 28 years, there have been many attempts to replicate Ford’s innovative and successful global search but none matches the size, quality and prestige of the Ford Supermodel of the World contest whose money guaranteed contact is about a million dollars annually.

The partnership between Legendary Gold limited & Ford Models is a perfect match. Through the Nigeria Model Awards, Legendary Gold Limited tends to create opportunities for young Nigerian girls who wish to build career in the international modeling industry.

The first edition of the NMA was staged in 2004 with the Paris based global Fashion TV winner of the NMA since 2004 are Bisi Sowemimo, Hilda Nevoh,Ifeoma Yolanda Jones, and Blessing Bassey.

Partners & sponsors include Kenya Airways, Ovation International, Noah Ark Hotel & Suites & Muson Festival.

As Eileen Ford once said “You never know when or where you will find the next new supermodel, but you can bet that someone from Ford Models will be looking” We hope that Robert Knapp picks the next supermodel from the NMA 2008.
