Jobs/Vacancies / 10 Proven Ways To Impress Your Boss by femilek8(m): 6:51pm On Aug 16, 2013
Source: Nesburg School of Business & Management. www.nsbmedu.com.ng

No.1 Take the initiative
Most people in the workplace don't struggle to get their work done, they struggle for recognition and new challenges. If you see a new project, go after it. If you see something that needs doing, do it. The higher you go in a company, the more you're steering the company, and that means taking risks. Fortune favors the bold. So, as long as you're handling all of your current duties well, overstep your boundaries a little bit and start a new task that's valuable to the company. Let your boss know what you're working on. They may take the task away from you, but they won't forget your vision.

No.2 Come prepared
If you're showing up to work prepared to work, you are on the right track. You should show up prepared and you should stay on top of your work throughout the day. You should be prepared with all the information you need for each meeting or project. A promotion or expansion of your current job are both ways the company gives you more responsibility. If you're not handling what you have on your plate currently, how do you expect to be given more?

No.3 Have an informed opinion
Know the state of your division and know the state of the marketplace you work in. Then, develop an opinion about how to improve -- realistic ways your team could try something new. Having an opinion is the most common thing in the world in business, but having an informed opinion is depressingly rare. If you take the time to develop a viewpoint, you should also share it when it's appropriate. A great way to share your opinion with your boss? When you're having a one-on-one discussion about something, say these magic words: “I disagree.” Politely and sincerely present the information you have and your interpretation of how your company could act on it. Of course, if your boss overrules you, abide by his decision. Sharing your opinion (your informed opinion) shows your boss you're not just a "yes" man. As a bonus, once your boss knows you don't automatically agree with whatever he says, the times you do agree will carry more weight.

No.4 Save the company money
Ever wonder why your company is in business? To make money. Oh, you work for a nonprofit? It's trying to make money to give it to people and causes that need it. Either way, making your employer more money is a contribution to the central goal of your company (it is, quite literally, the bottom line). Just like your personal finances, a company can have more money in two ways: 1) Earning more; and 2) Spending less. While you can contribute to the company's profits in many ways, you have direct control over cutting expenses. Keep an eye peeled for ways the company can spend less, and share your ideas early and often. Found a cheaper vendor for one of your company's needs? Share it! The day may come when the company passes the savings on to you in the form of a larger paycheck.

No.5 Dress up
You know the old adage, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have”? No? Well, learn it well. Look at what the boys on the next rung of the ladder are wearing, and dress like that. Even if you're not trying to get promoted, but just want to expand the job you have, dressing well and grooming properly is a nice way to do it. You want to give the impression you're pleased to be at work and take it seriously. Wearing a belt that should have been retired years ago just gives the impression that you don't care. If you're clean-shaven, shave daily. If you have facial hair, keep it groomed.

No.6 Read
Yes, read at work. We're not talking about putting your feet on your desk and reading the latest newspaper. But do keep a relevant book or industry magazine on hand, and pull it out whenever you have a few minutes of downtime. Read a few pages after you complete a task as a short break from work and you'll find it easier to refocus on your next task. You are developing your mind and your outlook, though, and turning yourself into a more valuable employee. So, you are developing one of the company's assets (you), and done in moderation, this is an incredibly efficient way to increase your value.

No.7 Come in early and leave late
Hear that? It's the sound of your fellow readers frantically scrolling down to the comments to whine, “It's not about how much time I put in at work, it's about the quality of work I do!” That's a valid point. Quality is more important than quantity. Know what else is completely true? As long as the quality's there, the quantity helps too. Nobody's asking you to stay an extra four hours. In fact, don't do that as it can actually make it look like you're falling behind or not managing your time correctly. Instead, look at it from your boss' perspective: Two employees are due in at 9 a.m. One arrives at 8:40, the other slides in like clockwork at 8:59. The second employee is at work because he “has to be.” He is following the rule, true, but the boss may well assume that if the rule wasn't there he'd be late every day. The first employee, on the other hand, gives the impression that he's excited to be at work and is there to tackle his goals. Not a bad return on 15 minutes of your time

No.8 Keep a clean work space
This one is a bit of a balancing act. Basically, you want your space to look worked in: not too cluttered, but not totally bare. If you have no paper on your desk, it doesn't look like you're working. But if you have no desk visible under all that paper, it doesn't look like you're working either. Why is your work piling up on you like that? We know, we know, you need all that paper. Well, if the stuff you have out is that important, it's worth having it organized and usable. Put your filing cabinet to work or, if it's really bad, look into getting a document scanner and digitizing your files. Lastly, when you leave work for the day, take 60 seconds to spruce up your area.

No.9 Highlight relevant industry innovations
Even if you're in an industry that you don't plan on being in forever, you should know your business. It's what you do every day, so you may as well be the best at it. This includes knowing the industry. When a news story covers your industry, clip the article and e-mail a scan of it to everyone on your team, boss included. Showing that you're aware of your business' place in the larger world shows you have your eye on the big picture -- that's a good message to send to your boss.

No.10 Complete the tasks everyone forgets
There are little things in every workplace that everybody forgets, from specific work processes that get overlooked to maintenance issues like turning the fans on in the morning. We're not saying you should be the one who cleans up the coffee station every morning, but you can pitch in and take some pride in your work area. Looking for an easy way to implement this? Learn how to unjam the copy machine. Check out the steps online, and next time you head over to the machine and discover that one of your coworkers has thoughtfully jammed it in zones A, B and C without clearing it, you can roll up your sleeves and solve it. It won't take long for this type of etiquette to be noticed.

Jobs/Vacancies / 5 Reasons Employers Will Hire You. by femilek8(m): 2:22pm On Aug 15, 2013
Source: NESBURG School of Business and Management, Lagos
https://www.facebook.com/Nesburgafrica

You’ve made looking for your next job, well… your job. Are you looking for a new job or you want to change your present job to a better one, maybe for the financial benefits or career prospects? Most times we spend so much time looking for what is not lost! We need to take sometime out to consider a lot of factors which inder us from getting what we want. Let me open your to the top 5 Personality Traits Employers Hire Most.

1. Intelligence.
In every study, it has been found that fully 76 percent of the productivity and contribution of an employee will be determined by his or her level of intelligence. Intelligence in this sense means the ability to plan, to organize, to set priorities, to solve problems, and to get the job done. Intelligence refers to your level of common sense and your practical ability to deal with the day-to-day challenges of the job.

2. Leadership ability
Leadership is the willingness and the desire to accept responsibility for results. It’s the ability to take charge, to volunteer for assignments, and to accept accountability for achieving the required results of those assignments.

3. Competence and Professionalism
Competence is the ability to get the job done. It is the ability to set priorities, to separate the relevant from the irrelevant tasks, and then to concentrate single-mindedly until the job is complete. It is really the foundation of everything that happens to you in your career.

4. Self-monitoring personality
Self-monitoring personality type is to adjust resume language to call attention to work experience where you’ve worked independently or excelled without the guidance of direct leadership. “In interviews, chose anecdotes that show how you’ve saved, made or achieved in previous positions… and how self-motivation was critical to that success.”

5. The right skills and experience
In this economy, you will struggle to find someone willing to hire a candidate that needs training. Think about it, would you want somebody shadowing your work and asking questions for the first 6 months? Or would you want somebody that knows the score and gets busy contributing to your targets from day one? Having the right skills and experience is more important than ever and unfortunately not something you can work on overnight.

So you’re thinking of starting a business?

If those who have already done it are to be believed, the years we spend at university are the best days of our lives. The freedom, the intellectual stimulation, the drinking, the sheer wealth and diversity and unusual levels of willingness of members of the opposite sex – it’s all yours for the taking.

It’s not just about money – starting a business is great for your CV as well

How’s a student to enjoy their time at uni with all that on their shoulders? Start a business, we say – and the great news is, it’s easy.

Why you should start a business

If you’re at university or you’ve just graduated, now is the best possible time to start a business. Think about it: what do you have to lose? It’s unlikely you’ll own property, have a job to hold down or have a family to support – when will you get another opportunity to do this? This may be the only time in your life you have the freedom to make mistakes – so take advantage.

Businesses don’t necessarily cost a lot to start – and they don’t have to take up all your time.

It’s not just about money, though – starting a business is great for your CV as well: think about how impressed prospective employers will be if you tell them you’ve started a business. During a time when graduates are finding harder and harder to get a job, starting a business will give you the edge over other candidates, providing you with skills from accountancy to sales to management and teamwork – and you’ll be able to demonstrate to employers just how self-motivated you are.

So what are you waiting for? Get started!…..To be Continued

Sports / Emenike Promises Eagles $50,000 If Nigeria Qualifies For 2014 World Cup by femilek8(m): 7:20am On May 11, 2013
Source: http://www.punchng.com/sports/emenike-promises-eagles-50000/

Spartak Moscow striker Emmanuel Emenike has promised to give the Super Eagles $50,000 if Nigeria qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Golden Boot winner, who is out of next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Namibia due to a fresh injury, believes the money will boost the team.

“I promise the whole team $50,000 if they qualify for Brazil 2014,” the Eagles star told MTNFootball.com on Friday.

“I’m doing this from the bottom of my heart to motivate the team. I am not doing this to intimidate anybody but just to show my total support for the team because I grew up supporting the Super Eagles.

“I don’t want my teammates to miss me because there are other players who can score goals for the team.

“Before I decided to play for Nigeria, even before I dreamt of becoming a professional footballer, which I am today by God’s grace, I have been a passionate fan of the team.

“I never knew I would play for Nigeria. This is a reward for what I have done in Europe and it is time I supported my country even more.”
Politics / FG May Declare State Of Emergency In Borno, Yobe, Others by femilek8(m): 7:06am On May 11, 2013
source: http://www.punchng.com/news/fg-may-declare-state-of-emergency-in-borno-others/

Indications emerged on Friday that the Federal Government might declare a state of emergency in five states in Northern Nigeria, as a last-ditch measure to check the rising killings and insecurity.

The states are Borno, Yobe, Nasarawa, Benue and Plateau.

A pointer to this emerged as President Goodluck Jonathan held an emergency meeting with security chiefs and some other top government officials in his bid to address the spate of insecurity in many parts of the country, with the latest being the killing of 47 policemen and 10 State Security Service operatives by the Ombatse militia in Alakyo forest in Nasarawa State on Tuesday.

They also destroyed nine patrol vans.

Jonathan, who rushed back to the country from South Africa late on Thursday, was said to have reviewed reports from the security chiefs on recent violence in Baga and Bama in Borno State; Alakyo Village in Nasarawa State; and Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

Among those at the meeting that lasted several hours were the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Said; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Alex Badeh; Director-General of State Security Service, Ita Ekpenyong; representative of the Chief of Army Staff, Maj-Gen. Emmanuel Bassey; and Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar.

The IG wore a black arm band to the meeting as a sign of mourning for the slain policemen.

Others at the meeting were the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.); Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (retd.); Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim; and the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe.
At a point, Olubolade, Anyim and Oghiadomhe stepped out of the venue wearing gloomy looks while Jonathan and the security chiefs continued with the discussions.
By the time the meeting finally ended, none of the government or security officials was willing to speak with journalists.
They also shielded Abubakar from journalists who sought an interview with him on the killing of the policemen.
He simply described the killing as “a sad development.”
A source at the meeting however described it as “a stormy session.”
The source said “far-reaching decisions,” some of which would be made public soon, and others which would be kept under wraps for security reasons were taken at the meeting.
Olubolade, who was moved to tears, managed to answer reporters’ questions on the murder of policemen.

•State of emergency

Asked to confirm speculations that government was considering the imposition of a state of emergency in some states, he said, “That is not within my purview. They (security chiefs) have the right to call for whatever they want. At the end of the day, the President will take a decision.

“It was an emergency security meeting at the instance of Mr. President. He had to cut his journey short because of insecurity and loss of lives; he was supposed to have been in Namibia. So, he summoned the security agencies to have a quick meeting with us and as you can see, they are still there. The Chief of Defence Staff and other service chiefs are still with him.
“He is looking at how we can put an end to all these troubles we are having and I think that at the end of that deliberation, you will get to know the outcome.”
He advised policemen against revenge, saying such would not help the nation.
“The security agencies particularly the police will not want to go and revenge. It is not going to help us because they are supposed to protect lives and property. Going to revenge will not douse tension. It will bring about a lack of confidence in the system. So, we will strictly discourage that,” he said.
On the allegation that policemen killed nine of the Ombatse cult members in Nasarawa State first before they retaliated, the minister said, “I wouldn’t know what is true about that. All I know is that the police have a duty to perform and as such, they must not be afraid, they must be equipped, they must be trained, they must do their job because they are under instructions. The police will not just wake up and pick their leaders if nothing has gone wrong.

“The populace must know that anybody can be brought in by the police for interrogation depending on the intelligence the police get; and that is what happens elsewhere.”

Meanwhile, security sources said on Friday that government was considering the military option to dislodge members of the Ombatse cult from their hideout in Alakyo forest in Nasarawa State.

This follows the inability of the police and SSS to accomplish the task.

•Death toll now 47

Saturday PUNCH learnt that 28 riot policemen who survived the attack were released by the militia and returned to their base in Akwanga.

Some of them returned to base without their rifles which they lost to their attackers.

The Public Relations Officer, Nasarawa State Police Command, Michael Ada, confirmed the return of the policemen to one of our correspondents on Friday.

He said that 17 others were still missing, adding that they had been presumed dead since they were yet to be seen two days after.

“The 17 missing policemen are presumed dead because they have been missing for over 48 hours. So this brings the number of the dead to 47. But the search and rescue teams are still searching for the missing officers and they have yet to report back to the headquarters,” Ada explained.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abayomi Akeremale, also confirmed the return of the 28 policemen.

Akeremale told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lafia that some of the policemen held hostage by the group during the attack were released on Friday morning.

He said 17 corpses of the slain officers were yet to be recovered. He explained that a total of 93 policemen were deployed for the operation, out of which 43 were suspected to have been killed.

Akeremale said that a suspected member of the militia had been arrested and was in police custody, adding that investigations on the incident were going on.

Akeremale also said he would visit the Squadron 38 Mopol Base in Akwanga to appeal to spouses and children of the slain policemen, who blocked the Akwanga-Lafia highway on Friday in protest over the killings.

•Protesters block expressway

Meanwhile, no fewer than 200 people travelling through Nasarawa State were on Friday trapped in a village near Akwanga, in an attempt to avoid a roadblock by protesting women and children.

NAN reports that the women and children were protesting over the killing of policemen and other security agents at Alakyo village by the Ombatse militia on Tuesday.

Following the blockade, vehicles tried to go through bush paths but the protesters blocked the paths, saying they were enforcing a restriction of movement through the state.

Some of the travellers told NAN that they were trapped in a remote village off Akwanga, near a local government area primary school and had no protection.

They said the women, who blocked the road, carried big sticks and were already burning car tyres on the bush paths to demonstrate their anger and dismay over the killings.

Commercial transporters and private vehicle drivers were trapped in the blockade.

One of the passengers, Mrs. Victoria Dzeremo, trapped with her daughter, Erdoo, said their vehicle, a commercial bus, had been stopped from further movement few kilometres off Akwanga.

“We have been here in this bush for more than an hour; these women have blocked the road and are demanding for government’s explanation over their husbands’ killings.

“They are here with their children, we have been begging them since to allow us passage but to no avail, the situation is quite serious.
“Now, they have started burning the nearby bush and we are afraid the fire might escalate and affect the vehicles,” Dzeremo said.
The Police Public Relations Officer in-charge of Nassarawa State, DSP Michael Ada, said Akeremale had directed the Area Commander to go and persuade the protesters to open the road.
NAN learnt the protesters insisted that they would only leave the road when their delegation to Governor Tanko Al-Makura returns and gives them a feedback on government’s position.

Education / How To Build Your Vocabulary by femilek8(m): 9:04am On Mar 29, 2013
Vocabulary size is the best single predictor of language competence and exam success, says Ed Cooke. Here's how to build yours.

Possession of a rich, nuanced vocabulary is one of the fundamentals of language skill, vital to your capacity to speak, read and understand. Indeed, research has consistently shown vocabulary size to be the best single predictor of language competence and exam success. Which is to say, to succeed in language exams, make sure you know all the words. The trouble is, GCSE and A-level students learn words ruinously slowly. Studies have shown that a speed of two per hour in the course of our school careers is the norm for learning speed: the mnemonic equivalent of taking 30 minutes to eat a crisp.

How to optimise this process? How to nail down a vast vocabulary in time for your exams? How to learn much, much quicker?
These are the questions we've been developing answers to the last three years at Memrise. Forgive me for talking directly about my own company on this blog, but we've now seen half a million people learn tens of millions of words, and we're beginning to gain a deep understanding of what you can do to learn words faster. While we'd of course encourage you to check out the site, the below description of the techniques our community benefit from are equally applicable to your offline learning, and general revision management.

Mems
Mems are visual mnemonic devices. They make a vivid connection between the form of a word, and its meaning. As an example, let's say you're trying to remember that "Caber" means "to fit" in Spanish. It's quite an easy word, but that doesn't stop it from being easy to forget too. You'll probably have forgotten it by the time you've finished this article - unless, of course, you're about to see a mem for it.
"You can barely FIT a BEAR into a CAB". Note the explicit association, the comic image. Think of this CAB-BEAR just about FITTING in, and you'll triple your chances of learning this word in the long term.
Mems are so effective both because they engage and amuse, but also because they create richer, less confusable, more robust and visual memories. They're best when they make special sense to you, or, even better, when you create them. So you should look at several mems and pick the best one for you, or create your own.

Spaced repetition
We forget most of what we learn – it's part of the design of human memory. We're tooled to remember things that recur, that are important enough to happen more than once. By circling back to the words you've learned, with increasing intervals the better you know them, you can catch memories before they fall into oblivion, and ensure you keep all the words you've bothered to learn fresh in memory. This kind of systematic review, where you don't cram but space your reviews out between other learning, is called Spaced

Repetition.
By using Spaced Repetition proactively you can ensure all your good work never goes to waste, and right there you've probably boosted your speed of learning by a factor of two.

Testing
When reviewing words, don't just look at them. Test yourself. When you look at a word and definition and tell yourself "I know this one" you are indulging in the mnemonic equivalent of asking your mother for a reference. By actually testing yourself, you quickly get a more realistic picture of what you truly know.
But the importance of testing goes much beyond this. When you recall a word from a test, your memory for that word actually improves. This is because you are strengthening the habit of recalling the word by practising doing so. And the habit is the meomy. Ideally the tests should be as difficult as possible, to give yourself the most powerful practice. Adding this habit to your overall learning technique is again worth a huge boost to overall speed of learning.

Religion / 12 Amazing Facts About Easter. by femilek8(m): 8:44am On Mar 29, 2013
12 Amazing Facts about Easter.

1. The name Easter owes its origin from Easter, the Anglo-Saxon goddess who symbolizes hare and egg.
Easter always falls between March 22 and April 25.
2. The original date of Easter was first fixed in 325AD.
3. In the Christian calendar, Easter marks the rebirth of Christ and the end of the 40 days of Lent.
Good Friday is an official holiday in 12 US states (and if you’re in one of those states, enjoy the long weekend).
4. Easter is celebrated at different times by Eastern and Western Christians. That’s because the dates for Easter in Eastern Christianity are based on the Julian Calendar.
5. There’s a link between Easter and Passover and in some countries and languages, the words for the two feasts are related.
6. Eggs are associated with Easter because they are a symbol of starting new life. It’s believed that eggs have been given to celebrate the spring equinox for more than 2 millennia.
7. Easter is now celebrated (in the words of the Book of Common Prayer) on the first Sunday after the full moon, which happens on, or after March 21, the Spring Equinox.
8. In medieval times, a festival of egg throwing was held in church, during which the priest would throw a hard-boiled egg to one of the choirboys. It was then tossed from one choirboy to the next and whoever held the egg when the clock struck 12 was the winner and retained the egg.
9. The custom of giving eggs at Easter time has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans, to whom the egg was a symbol of life.
10. The date of Passover is variable as it is dependent on the phases of the moon, and thus Easter is a movable feast.

11. Next to Halloween, Easter holiday paves way for confectionary business to boom.
12. Americans celebrate Easter with a large Easter egg hunt on the White House Lawn.

Sports / New Date For Kenya V Nigeria Return Leg Match...june 5 by femilek8(m): 8:40pm On Mar 28, 2013
The match was originally scheduled to be played on June 9 (Saturday) but has now been rescheduled to June 5 (Wednesday) according to communique from Fifa.

The World Cup qualifier return leg match between Harambee Stars and Nigeria’s Super Eagles will now be played on Wednesday (June 5) and not Saturday (June 9), at Moi Kasarani.

This new date has been communicated to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) by Fifa World Cup Organising committee after a meeting held in Zurich last week.

The match was originally scheduled to be played on June 9 (Saturday) but has now been rescheduled in order to allow Nigerian team travel to Brazil to represent Africa in the Fifa Confederations Cup starting on June 15.

The new change of date will affect the other teams in the Group Malawi, Namibia as they will now play on June 7, two days later.

Stars then travel away to Malawi on June 14, before ending their campaign at home against Namibia on September 16.

Due to the new set dates, the Nigerian team is scheduled to arrive in Nairobi possibly on April 1 and depart on 6th to Brazil.

However, despite the match being played on a weekday, Kenya FA International Match Organising Committee members will start early preparations for the game which is expected to attract a big crowd buoyed by the impressive draw against the African Champions away in Calabar.

“We are ensuring Kenyans that we shall win our three next fixtures and get the nine points and eventually qualify for the Brazil 2014 World Cup and we urge total support from all fans as we appeal them to turn out in large numbers for the two key matches,” said Kenya FA President am Nyamweya.

Harambee Stars have to beat Nigeria in Nairobi if they are to keep alive their chances of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. Kenya are currently bottom of the table with 2 points and a loss against Nigeria will mean they are out of contention.
