Nigerian Government To Review Resumption Date For Schools, Says Education Minister

The Nigerian government says it is currently reviewing the January 18 resumption date for schools across the country, following the rise in COVID-19 cases.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, stated this on Monday at the resumed briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

On his part, the Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, spoke about the ongoing enrolment exercise being conducted by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

A boy, Oyeachonam Okonkwo, 10, has become the youngest king in Igboland after he was crowned following his father's death.

His father, Igwe Akuebisi, the Olame 1 Of Iyiora Anam. Anambra state, was buried in December 2020 and the boy was crowned on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

No moon sighted, fasting continues tomorrow – Sultan

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has announced that the Ramadan fast would continue on Saturday.

This was followed by the report of the National Moonsighting Committee of the NSCIA stating that no moon was sighted in the country on Friday.

It said the Ramadan fast would reach 30 this year as against preparations earlier made by Muslim faithful to celebrate Eid-el-Fitri tomorrow (Saturday) in Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement by the Chairman of Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of Sultanate Council in Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Junaidu, on Friday.

The statement quoted the Sultan as declaring Sunday, May 24, as the 1st day of Shawwal 1441AH and the beginning of Eid-el-Fitri celebration in the country.

The unending cruelty and wanton destruction of lives and property of Southern Kaduna communities continued last night as armed Fulani militia lay siege to Gonan Rogogo village, Kajuru Local Government Area (LGA) killing 17 persons, critically injured 6 and rustled cows.

SOKAPU visited the village today around 12 noon and saw firsthand the horror inflicted on the poor Adara village, 64 km away from Kaduna metropolis on in the Kaduna - Kachia road.

The armed Fulani militia stroke around 11:30pm. They broke into the home of Jonathan Yakubu, 40 and slaughtered him. They also killed his wife, Sheba Yakubu 32, and hacked to death their only three children, Patience 13, Revelation 6 and Rejoice 4, thus wiping out the entire Yakubu household.

We met relations of the Yakubu’s who were sobbing beyond consolation in front of the humble Yakubu had built.

From this compound trails of blood led to another gory scene of where Kauna Magaji was killed along with her daughter, Faith Magaji who died of grisly cutlasses cut to their heads.

Chief Of Godogodo Son, Emmanuel Iliya Kidnapped By Unknown Gunmen, Kidnappers Demands N30 Million Ransom.

Mr. Emmanuel Iliya who is the first son of the Chief of Godogodo also known as “Sarki Godogodo Chiefdom” HRH. Iliya Ajiya was on Wednesday, 22nd April whisked away by unknown gunmen at his residential home in Antang, Jema’a LGA at around 9:00pm to an undisclosed location. The kidnappers were said to had fire some shots rapidly before invading the house and on reaching his apartment they also fired a shot at him that led to a serious injury where the bullet pierced and broke his arm.

A COVID-19 vaccine developed at the University of Oxford will be trialled on humans in the UK from Thursday this week.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock today said he was ‘throwing everything at’ Britain’s attempt to develop the first vaccine in the world.

The Government will give the scientists an extra £20million to help with their trials, Mr Hancock said, and a further £22.5m to a project at Imperial College London.

The Oxford vaccine, known as ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 will be trialled on up to 510 people out of a group of 1,112 aged 18 to 55. It is recruiting volunteers in London, Bristol, Oxford and Southampton.

It is the first British-made vaccine to go into real-world trials and carries with it huge hopes that it will provide a key to getting out of lockdown and banishing COVID-19.

The virus has now infected more than 125,000 people and killed 17,339 in the UK and the UK is on course to end up one of the worst-hit nations in the world.

Mr Hancock said developing vaccines is an ‘uncertain science’ which usually takes years but that manufacturing capacity will be ramped up in case the jab is a success and is suitable to roll out to the public.

The trial will take six months and is limited to a small number of people so scientists can assess whether it is safe and effective without using huge amounts of resources – each patient must return for between four and 11 visits after the jab – and without the risk of large numbers of people being affected if something goes wrong.

Two suspected cases of coronavirus, a father and his son, have been quarantined at the Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital Kafanchan, in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

A member of the council’s coronavirus response team, Dr. Hosea Miwok confirmed the development to Salama News today in Kafanchan.

Miwok said the two suspected cases turned themselves in at the hospital after experiencing symptoms of the disease upon the father’s return from Abuja two weeks ago.
