7th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards

Here’s the full list of winners at the just concluded Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.

The anticipated seventh edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) might be over but certainly not talks of the glitz and glamour of the red carpet and the surprising wins and snubs.

Headlined by seasoned broadcasters Amina Abdi Rabar and Ik Osakioduwa, the star-studded show had celebrities in attendance attempt to outdo themselves for the award’s newest addition- the ‘Best Dressed’ Category.

Leading the night was ‘Living in Bondage’ with a total of 7 wins including Best Overall movie. ‘God Calling’ followed closely with 2 wins. One of the biggest snubs for the night was ‘King of Boys’ with no wins. The industry merit award went to seasoned TV and filmmaker, Peter Igho.

For the special category, the Best Dressed Male and Best Dressed Female went to Mike Edwards and Mercy Eke of the just concluded Big Brother Naija season 4.

ASUU Strike: Nigerian govt reaches agreement with lecturers on IPPIS
The Nigerian government has reached an interim agreement with striking university lecturers to integrate the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

The IPPIS is the government’s accountability software that has been made compulsory for all public institutions, mainly for personnel payroll.

ASUU is opposed to the use of IPPIS for lecturers saying it does not consider some of the peculiar operations of universities. The lecturers’ union then developed its own UTAS which it wants the government to adopt for universities.

Aminu Abdullahi Shagali, speaker of the Kaduna state house of assembly, has resigned from his position.

Shagali conveyed his decision to resign in a letter dated February 25 and addressed to the clerk.

The lawmaker, who described his office as an “appointment”, said he resigned on “personal grounds”.

“I Aminu Abdullahi Shagali, speaker Kaduna state house of assembly hereby resign my appointment as the speaker Kaduna state house of assembly on personal grounds,” Shagali said in the hand-written letter.

It is still unclear the issues that led to his resignation.

Yusuf Tanimu Zailani, former deputy speaker, was elected speaker after Bello Zubairu, assembly clerk, presided over a special session.

Muktar Isa Hazo was elected as deputy speaker. While Zilani represents Igabi constituency, Hazo represents Milgoma constituency.

While the world scrabbles around looking for a cure for the deadly coronavirus, scientists have found another virus.

Unlike the former which started in China, this new one comes from an artificial lake in Brazil.

Independent reports that this virus named “Yaravirus” was found in an amoebae. It was named after “Yara” or “Iara,” which means ‘mother of waters’ – a mythical siren/mermaid figure from Brazilian mythology who would lure sailors underwater.

Scientists are saying that this virus is mysterious because it has genes that no one has seen before.

Reporting the new discovery in bioRxiv, a biological sciences website, the researchers wrote: “We report the discovery of Yaravirus, a new lineage of amoebal virus with a puzzling origin and phylogeny.”

According to Jônatas Abrahão, senior author and a virologist at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, ” It was really a big surprise since so far we only know giant viruses infecting amoebas, not small viruses.”

He revealed that they searched for the Yaravirus’ gene signature in thousands of environmental genomic data and found nothing, “indicating how rare this virus is.”

A pro-transparency group, BudgIT, has located the 100 computers purchased by the Gombe state government - The sum of N100m was allocated in the 2019 budget for the supply of 100 computers in Filya area of Gombe state.


The disclosure has sparked criticism on social media as many Nigerians wondered why a state would spend N1m to procure each computer The Gombe state government has procured 100 computers at the cost of N100m, TrackaNG, a project initiated by the pro-transparency group, BudgIT, that tracks the performance of government budgets has disclosed.


TrackaNG in a tweet on Monday, February 17, disclosed that it had tracked the delivery of the computers in Filya area of Gombe state. It said the sum of N100m was allocated in the 2019 budget for the supply of the 100 computers.

Nasarawa State Government sacks College of Education provost, Dr. Mrs. Rebecca Isaac Umaru, appoints replacement

Following the recent protest by students of College of Education Akwanga on the 10th of February 2020 over strike action by the institution which lasted a week, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa state Engr. A.A. Sule gave an order for the immediate call-off of the strike during a closed door meeting at Kini Country Guest Inn Akwanga.

A source after the meeting reported that the Governor had earlier travelled to South Africa for an urgent assignment and was greatly surprised on hearing about uncalled-for situation of the state’s college.

It was reported to Bestxplorer on Friday 14th that the Provost and some other office holders were served papers for the immediate leave of office.

Following the call-off and dethronement, rumors by some students of the college went helter-skelter during the weekend.

While some said that the Provost had embezzled so much money from students by the increase of fee without the awareness of the government, others stressed on how the provost had made studying extremely difficult for them by not really making efforts towards subsidizing other expenses such as paying N1000 or N2000 to lecturers for the signing of course form in the institution.

College of Education Akwanga suspends strike; students to resume with immediate effect


Following the recent strike action and a day’s placement of the College of Education Akwanga under security control, the Nasarawa state government after his return from South Africa yesterday called for an urgent closed door meeting at Kini Country Guest Inn Akwanga on the matter today being the 12th of February 2020.

In the meeting, resolutions were made and the situation (strike) suspended.

Hence, students have been called on to resume with immediate effect as normal school activities will take effect as from tomorrow (13th February 2020).
Also, students are reminded to ensure they comply to payment of registration fee as well as other tuition fees in order not to get caught up with late registration.
