About 16 members of same family were burnt to death by bandits who invaded Bakali village in Fatika District, Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The bandits, our correspondent learnt invaded the community on Tuesday around 4:00pm and set fire on many bags of grains, vehicles and motorcycles in the village. It was said that the bandits locked up 16 members of the same family in a room and set fire on the house.

An unconfirmed report going round this morning has it that there was a heavily gun fire in the early hours of Saturday at about 12am somewhere in Juji and Karji, Kaduna.

A Facebook user with the name, Precious Kezz Abrakson shared photos of a man house where the suspects used chemicals in decaying the house door, windows and the wall as well. However, two of the man cars were reportedly set ablaze.

Rapper AKA has reacted to the Grammy Award loss of Afrobeats singer Burna Boy.

The 62nd Grammy Awards which held last night in Los Angeles, California, saw Burna Boy and his African Giant alb nominated in the category for Best World Music Album.

The category was won by fellow African and legendary singer, Angelique Kidjo, with her album Ceila.

As soon as the news broke, trolls stormed AKA’s Twitter page to hear what he will say about the loss Burna Boy suffered.

Recall that Burna Boy and AKA went at each other over the xenophobic attacks inflicted on Nigerians by South Africans in their country.

The 23-year-old Kano man, Sulaiman Isa who is proposing to tie nuptial knots with a 46-year-old American, Jeannine Sanchez said his decision to settle for the white woman was because Hausa women are not romantic. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the murder of a student of University of Maiduguri, Ropvil Daciya Dalep by Boko Haram insurgents.

Dalep was abducted on his way back to school on 9th January, 2019 alongside others in the vehicle to Maiduguri from Jos. A statement signed by the National President, Comrade Danielson Akpan said after days in the net of the dreaded Boko Haram group, Dalep a bonafide member of NANS was brutally killed on the 22nd January, 2020 in a video that has gone viral on the social media space. “Others are still held captive and suffering in the hands of their abductors.

How can I get EPP code?

A number of Nigerian English words have made it into the Oxford English Dictionary for the first time. The majority of these new additions are either borrowings from Nigerian languages, or unique Nigerian coinages that have only begun to be used in English in the second half of the twentieth century, mostly in the 1970s and 1980s.

1. Buka: One particularly interesting set of such loanwords and coinages has to do with Nigerian street food. The word buka, borrowed from Hausa and Yoruba and first attested in 1972, refers to a roadside restaurant or street stall that sells local fare at low prices.

2. Bukateria: Another term for such eating places first evidenced in 1980 is bukateria, which adds to buka the –teria ending from the word cafeteria.

3. Danfo: The informal transport systems that emerged in Nigeria’s huge, densely populated cities have also necessitated lexical invention. Danfo, a borrowing from Yoruba whose earliest use in written English is dated 1973, denotes those yellow minibuses whizzing paying passengers through the busy streets of Lagos, the country’s largest city.

4. Okada: Okada on the other hand, is first attested twenty years later, and is the term for a motorcycle that passengers can use as a taxi service. It is a reference to Okada Air, an airline that operated in Nigeria from 1983 to 1997, and its reputation as a fast yet potentially dangerous form of transport, just like the motorcycle taxi.

5. Mama put: An even more creative synonym is mama put, from 1979, which comes from the way that customers usually order food in a buka: they say ‘Mama, put…’ to the woman running the stall, and indicate the dish they want. The word later became a generic name for the female food vendors themselves—Nobel Prize-winning Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka notably includes a Mama Put character in one of his works.

6. Chop: Coming from pidgin contexts is the verb chop, which is a common colloquial word in Ghana and Nigeria meaning ‘to eat’. However, beginning in the 1970s, chop also developed the sense of acquiring money quickly and easily, and often dishonestly.

7. Next tomorrow: The oldest of the new additions that are originally from Nigeria is next tomorrow, which is the Nigerian way of saying ‘the day after tomorrow’. It was first used in written English as a noun in 1953, and as an adverb in 1964.

8. Kannywood: The youngest of the words in this batch is Kannywood, first used in 2002, which is the name for the Hausa-language film industry based in the city of Kano. It is a play on Hollywood, following the model of Nollywood, the more general term for the Nigerian film industry that was added to the OED in 2018.

9. K-leg: Also originating in the 19th century is K-leg, first attested in 1842 in British English, but now used mostly in Nigerian English. It is another term for the condition of knock knees, as well as a depreciative name for a person affected with this condition, whose inward-turning knees often resemble the shape of the letter K. It is of such widespread use in Nigeria that by the early 1980s, it had acquired a figurative meaning—a K-leg can now also be any sort of problem, flaw, setback, or obstacle.

Social Media Is Killing Many Nigerian Youths Slowly – You Might Be One Of Them.

Social media is surely a great place to be but if you’re not careful, you might get frustrated and loose morale with what you see there.

I have many friends who are social media addicts, they cherish their social media image than what they are in real life.

Friends that we drink garri together, you won’t see them post it on social media but let them see one opportunity to enter a beach, eatery or fun place, you see them blasting pictures everywhere.

They won’t only take the pictures and post it, they will make sure the pictures are well edited so people can see that they are balling and have the impression that, it’s how they ball all day.

I have seen someone dressed up on a Friday evening, snap pictures and post on Instagram with caption “Quilox Way” and UnCloth again then go to sleep.

She didn’t go to any Quilox that day, it’s all for the gram. Just for social media people to have impression that she’s actually going to have a good time in the club.

If you now grab your phone and see pictures of people balling on social media, you will think their lives are better than yours.

If you’re not careful, you will start thinking God has not done enough in your life not knowing you’re just comparing your real life with someone’s fake life on social media.

Many youths have given up on doing great things in life because of what they see their mates posting on social media.

Because someone put up their best picture on social media does not mean they are leaving their best life.

Be wise, don’t believe all you see on social media, anybody can be whatever they want to be on social media, all that is needed is a good phone with good camera quality.

World Health Organisation (WHO) Internship Programme 2020 for Graduate and Postgraduate students

Applications are invited for the World Health Organisation (WHO) Internship Programme 2020. WHO’s Internship Programme offers a wide range of opportunities for graduate and postgraduate students to gain insight in the technical and administrative programmes of WHO while enriching their knowledge and experience in the health field, thereby contributing to the advancement public health.

The objectives of the programme are to:

Provide a framework for assigning postgraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds to WHO programmes that can enhance their educational experience through practical assignments.
Expose students to the work of WHO.
Provide WHO programmes with input from students specializing in various fields. Most students are placed in health-related programmes, although other disciplines can be considered as appropriate such as communication, external relations or human resources.

The duration of WHO internships is between six to twenty four weeks depending on the needs of the WHO technical unit and the intern’s availability.

Benefits

As of January 2020, WHO provides stipends to students who need support. After selection, the interns will fill a disclosure form to indicate if they already have support (grant / scholarships, etc.). Based on this disclosure form, WHO will provide stipends up to a specific amount per duty station. The amount will be indicated for each position the students apply to.
WHO provides to all interns a medical and accident insurance. All costs of travel and accommodation are the responsibility of the intern candidate.

Eligibility

You are at least twenty years of age on the date of application.
You are enrolled in a course of study at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification (graduate or postgraduate) (applicants who have already graduated may also qualify for consideration provided that they apply to the internship within six months after completion of their formal qualification).
You have completed three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution prior to commencing (bachelor’s level or equivalent) the assignment.
You possess a first degree in a public health, medical or social field related to the technical work of WHO or a degree in a management-related or administrative field.
You are not related to a WHO staff member (e.g., son/daughter, brother/sister, or mother/father).
You are fluent at least in one of the working language of the office of assignment.
You have not previously participated in WHO’s Internship Programme.
You hold a valid passport of a WHO Member State.
