sulaak: The government has been mismanaging state funds, especially funds linked to the oil and gas industry, for over 50 years, and we haven't done anything because it is not really our money.
Let's steal our tax money, and all hell will break loose. The return from oil export is too low that Tinubu has been forced to implement these Tax Reforms or else the World Bank and the IMF will pull their loans @ Bolded. Are you saying we should look away while the government mismanage this funds and allow the tax law so it can br mismanaged too? Don't you think we need to block all these loopholes first. We need to make sure money made is being used for what it's intended for. I swear, we won't complain if the government spends this money judiciously and deals heavily with whoever steals or try to steal public funds. The people have to have faith in the government for effective taxation. The new tax law won't solve our problems. In fact it will add to it. It's like trying to fix a car with an engine problem by buying tires first . |

sulaak: Taxation funds the services; Nigeria cannot continue to have a budget based on oil exports. A tax-driven economy will force all state and local governments to contribute to the government.
The tax reform is designed to broaden the collection of tax and not penalise low-paying Nigerians.
As the government grows, it will expand the tax base and increase its budget. if Nigeria capture 18% of tax recipt that will add $60 billion to the budget. How about the mismanaged funds ? The corrupt practices? Not against taxation. Until governance improves, heavy taxation will only worsen Nigeria's problems. |

sulaak: Nigeria is a funny country.
The country has 300 billion in circulation but generates $20 billion in taxes and has a budget of $30 billion for 230 million people. Yet, they want health care, electricity, good roads and social amenities. How is the government going to fund those amenities on a $30 million budget?
The NBA, NLC, Atiku and P Obi haven't provided concrete evidence that the Tax Reforms were signed into law in JUNE 2025, have been altered; instead, we have political interest groups intent on sabotaging the future of the country.
The NLC, which has no credibility as an organisation that tried to sabotage Dangote refinery, is now the arbiter of truth and honesty. 30 billion taxes generated. Is it from there Yahaya Bello and the likes are stealing from ? @ Bolded Heavy taxation without services is unfair Most Nigerians already struggle with: Poor electricity Bad roads Inadequate healthcare High inflation and unemployment Asking people to pay significantly more without visible benefits: Deepens poverty Increases informal economic activity Encourages tax evasion Fuels public anger and distrust Taxation only works when citizens believe “I get value for my money.” |

nairalanda1: If it was Obi passing the law, the people now cursing it would be saying he is a leader that knows how to take tough decisions, while tinubu supporters would be saying that he is an evil person, and nigerians should reject the law.
It's this kind of mindset , plus the idea that economic development can only come from selling oil and sharing the money without corruption, that makes it hard to even have a sane discussion of the benefits of the tax (including the fact that it would reduce corruption because now if a leader steals money when most are paying tax, it would be like he or she is stealing from your pocket..and that means bad news for that leader). As a result, people are in essence arguing that tinubu should keep on borrowing (which he would gladly do...infact the economic policy is basically 'make Nigeria credit worthy for more loans' which ironically the new borrowing law would make possible)..and thus more debt.
I hear people shouting that the security is bad. Well, we spend 5 billion dollars yearly to keep 230 million people safe. Police and millitary salaries are as a result scanty, and there isn't enough money for equipment and other stuff. Yet we don't want to accept tax solutions because ...we want the kidnappers to keep on kidnapping us. Apparently.
One thing I have noticed from being on this site for over ten years, and sometimes deleting akant and coming back...lol. ..is that Nigerians are very economically illiterate, and only speak in defence of sane economic polices if their man is in power. When their man is not in power, they suddenly remember that the policy is oppressive. It all amounts to the fact that we run patronage politics here...where people think that if their man is in power....they would benefit from cash. So, he must be defended even when there is obvious corruption...that is why we have the funny thing of Tinubu supporters opposing subsidy removal in 2012, and then supporting it in 2023...what changed was who was in charge.
The problem is, opposing this tax law means you support bad government and more borrowing. Because both of these things benefit 90% OF THE People on this site.
Anyway, continue. I am even getting cynical about the average Nigerian. All the billions of dollars been looted . Where are they? You are saying this as if Nigeria isnt rich enough to get thing right without taxing the citizens heavily. All monies stolen every now and then , where are they? The people stealing the money, the money recovered, is the government doing much to fight corruption? Are they still stealing Billions? Every week, there is always a corruption story on the news. These monies stollen is more than enough to sustain Nigeria. Ordinary Local government are embezzling money . Yet you are asking us to pay the tax to enrich us . All the IGRs are being mismanaged and you will want us to pay more? Nobody is against taxes. Fix the country first! The people will be glad to pay this tax. |

Please don't go there. Even the doctors are leaving Nigeria en mass. So, tell me what exactly one is enjoying in Nigeria to be happy to pay this tax. Reject the new Tax law entirely! In a country where the government provides almost nothing for its citizens deserves no tax from the citizens. Security . Police aren't trusted Health care. Electricity. Good roads Social amenities
Is it Somone whose Dad was kidnapped and paid 20m for ransom without the security operatives helping would want to pay the new tax?
Someone whose son died in the hospital because Nepa took light or because the General Hospitals were short staff, is it that person that would want to pay this Tax?
Or is it car owners who fix their cars regularly due to bad road that would want to pay?
Water cooperation almost doesn't exist again. We drill our boreholes and get water ourselves.
Cost of living is over the roof!
We need to ask ourselves these questions: What are the government doing with the taxes they have been collecting?
What are they doing with the money gotten from subsidy removal?
We keep hearing Politicians looting money in Billion dollars and nothing is being done. Are these the people I will till and turn the soil for ? So that they can loot the money
We don't need any new tax law. When Nigeria works the way it should, we will gladly pay the tax without force. |
