This morning, I got a message from a friend.

“Please can you help me with pentazocine for my friend? She's a sickle cell warrior. She just wants to have it close by in case she starts having crisis so she can inject herself before rushing to the hospital.”

Turns out the lady in question is already in the habit of injecting herself anytime she “feels something coming.” In fact, she keeps the drug close at all times — hidden, like a secret weapon against pain.

But to me, it sounded like a serious case of drug dependence. That one message opened the door to a deeper issue that so many people in Nigeria are either ignorant about or too ashamed to talk about:

PENTAZOCINE ADDICTION.

For those who don’t know, Pentazocine is a narcotic analgesic — in simple terms, a powerful painkiller. It works by acting on the central nervous system (CNS) to block pain signals in the brain.

When used frequently or without strict medical supervision, pentazocine becomes highly addictive.

in british colonies - security forces first role was internal security and keeping the natives in check. and for this reason the security forces [police, military etal] were above the law as far as natives were concerned. they answered to their superiors and the leaders.

this system is essentially unchanged and part of this means soldiers and police and any armed service is a law onto themselves. in fact, give any nigerian a uniform of some semblance of offical authority and they will start trying to bully and oppress their fellow nigerians

there is a hierarchy to this and soldiers are at the top, thanks to decades of military rule . so if i want to move around without being disturbed by security agents, the simple thing to do is pay a soldier to move with me. years ago i hired vehicle to travel and i had a lot of personal possessions in it. i wondered what would happen when we got into lagos, because i was sure it would be a long day of being harassed by police. but the driver simply picked a soldier from the road, paid him and we drove unmolested for the entire journey

soldier are already bullies, but they get very angry when they see people wearing their uniform because they know the people are basically using their uniform in hustle or queue jumping.

but they also know one of them likely rented his uniform to the culprit.
