BEIJING, April 11 (Reuters) - China hiked its levies on imports of U.S. goods to 125% on Friday, hitting back at Donald Trump's decision to single out the world's No.2 economy for higher duties, while dismissing the U.S. president's tariff strategy as "a joke."
Investors had been waiting to see how Beijing would respond to Trump's move on Wednesday to effectively raise tariffs on Chinese goods to 145% while announcing a 90-day pause on duties on dozens of other countries' goods. The yuan slipped to levels last seen during the global financial crisis on Thursday but rebounded slightly on Friday.

"The U.S. side's imposition of excessively high tariffs on China seriously violates international economic and trade rules, runs counter to basic economic principles and common sense, and is simply an act of unilateral bullying and coercion," China's Finance Ministry said in a statement.
The tit-for-tat increases stand to make goods trade between the world's two largest economies impossible, analysts say, with import duties above around 35% wiping out Chinese exporters' profit margins and making American offerings in China similarly overly expensive.

President Trump said Wednesday that he was unilaterally raising the US tariff rate on China to 125% and instituted a 90-day pause on steep "reciprocal" tariffs on non-retaliating countries.

"I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately," Trump posted on Truth Social. "Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, ... and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately."


The US stock market soared on the news. It's unclear whether countries other than China that announced countermeasures still face the tariffs rate that went into full effect on Wednesday.

"The world is ready to work with President Trump to fix global trade, and China has chosen the opposite direction," Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick tweeted.

Earlier on Wednesday, China said it will raise its tariff on US goods to 84%, and the EU voted to adopt a 25% tariff on a range of US goods worth roughly $23 billion.

The China move came after the Trump administration followed through on a threat to add a 50% tariff on Chinese goods, in addition to 34% reciprocal tariffs, raising the overall tariff rate on Chinese goods to 104%. The tit-for-tat escalation essentially amounts to a trade war between the world's two largest economics.
