Ukrainian drones targeted four Russian airfields Wednesday in the largest such attack of the war, as Kyiv’s troops advance further into Russia following their surprise cross-border incursion that has left the Kremlin embarrassed and scrambling.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the military for the attacks, which he described as “precise, timely and effective,” in a video address released the same day he said Kyiv’s forces had captured Russian soldiers in southern Russia and destroyed a Russian fighter jet.
“Our Ukrainian drones work exactly as they should. Still, there are things that cannot be done with drones alone,” Zelensky said
A source in Ukraine’s security service told CNN it was the “biggest attack” on Russia’s airfields since the war began and targeted four bases in the southwest regions of Kursk and Voronezh, and Nizhny Novgorod, east of Moscow.
It comes as Ukraine’s massive ground incursion has forced tens of thousands of Russians from their homes and put Russia on the back foot as it struggles to repel Kyiv’s troops.
Russia’s defense ministry said Wednesday it destroyed 117 “aircraft-type” drones and four tactical missiles over Kursk and neighboring regions.
More than 35 Ukraine-launched drones were destroyed over Voronezh, its Gov. Aleksandr Gusev said Wednesday on Telegram.
While there were no casualties, the attack damaged properties, vehicles and municipal infrastructure, Gusev said, adding there was a risk of further drone attacks.
A statement by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Wednesday claimed that Ukraine’s Air Force “destroyed a Russian SU-34 fighter-bomber” in the Kursk region on Tuesday night.
In Belgorod, which neighbors Kursk, Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov declared a regional emergency Wednesday, calling the situation on the ground “extremely difficult and tense” in a message on Telegram. Residents began evacuating Monday because of Ukrainian advances.
Regional authorities are now appealing to the Kremlin to declare a federal emergency, Gladkov said.
A Libyan driver was apprehended in the Bishr area on Tuesday for attempting to smuggle six undocumented female migrants of Nigerian nationality.
The arrest was made during routine police patrols, which intercepted the vehicle and detained the driver.
Migrant Rescue Watch, an organisation that monitors migrant activities, disclosed the incident on social media.
According to their report, the driver, who is suspected of being involved in human trafficking, falsely claimed that the Nigerian nationals were his family members in an effort to evade arrest.
All individuals involved have been transferred to the Bishr Police Department for further legal action as authorities continue to investigate the case.

Russia is evacuating residents from a second border region, as Ukraine continues its surprise week-long offensive inside the country.
Some 11,000 people in the Belgorod region have been moved, Russian state media reported, because of "enemy action" near the border.
Belgorod lies next to Kursk - where Ukrainian troops launched their surprise attack into Russian territory last Tuesday.
Ukrainian forces have since advanced up to 18 miles (30km) inside Russia - the deepest incursion into the country since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Kyiv claims thousands of troops are involved
On Monday morning, residents in parts of Belgorod - which lies to the south of Kursk - were told not to panic but that they must evacuate.
Belgorod governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said people from Krasnaya Yaruga district were being moved due to "enemy activity on the border".
He also said the whole region was under a missile alert, and told people to shelter in their basements.
But he added he was "sure that our servicemen will do everything to cope with the threat that has arisen". People were also continuing to be evacuated from Kursk on Monday - with thousands of people told to leave their homes in the Belovsky district.
Governor Alexei Smirnov also issued a missile warning - saying people needed to take shelter in rooms without windows and with solid walls. Temporary accommodation has been prepared, he said.
At the weekend, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine was taking the war into "the aggressor's territory".
He acknowledged the attack for the first time on Saturday night - saying Russia had launched 2,000 attacks from Kursk this summer and it deserved a response.
A senior Ukrainian official told the AFP news agency that thousands of troops were engaged in the operation, far more than the small incursion initially reported by Russian border guards.
The official added that there aim was to "to inflict maximum losses and to destabilise the situation in Russia". Video from social media and verified by Reuters showed Ukrainian soldiers raising their flag in the Russian village on Guevo, in Kursk.
It marks the biggest co-ordinated attack on Russian territory by Kyiv's conventional forces. Russia has so far struggled to halt the Ukrainian advance, with more than 76,000 people evacuated from the Kursk region, where a state of emergency has been declared by local authorities.
Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin described the offensive as a "major provocation".
Some in Russia have questioned how Ukraine was able to enter the Kursk region - with one pro-Russian war blogger, Yuri Podolyaka calling the situation "alarming"
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said a tough response from Russia's armed forces "will not take long".
Meanwhile, Russian ally Belarus said it was bolstering its own troop numbers at its border after claiming Ukraine had entered its airspace with drones.

Nobel Peace laureate says he will perform his duties ‘sincerely’ following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus has been sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government.
Yunus, 84, took oath at a ceremony in Dhaka on Thursday night after weeks of student-led protests forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to neighbouring India.
“I will uphold, support and protect the constitution,” Yunus said during the ceremony, adding that he would perform his duties “sincerely”.
The key tasks for Yunus now are restoring peace in Bangladesh and preparing for new elections.
Bangladesh’s figurehead President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to Yunus for his role as chief advisor, which is the equivalent to a prime minister, in presence of foreign diplomats, civil society members, top businessmen and members of the former opposition party at the presidential palace in Dhaka.
No representatives of Hasina’s party were present.
Sixteen other people have been included in the interim Cabinet with members drawn mainly from civil society and including two of the student protest leaders. The Cabinet members Yunus as interim leader were chosen in discussions this week among student leaders, civil society representatives and the military.
Hasina quit on Monday after several chaotic weeks that began in July with protests against a quota system for government jobs that critics said favoured people with connections to Hasina’s party.
But the demonstrations soon grew into a bigger challenge for Hasina’s 15-year rule as more than 300 people including students were killed amid spiralling violence.
Yunus, who was awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his work developing microcredit markets, was in the French capital for the 2024 Olympics when he was chosen for the interim role, and returned home earlier Thursday to tight security at the airport in Dhaka.
In his first comments after his arrival, he told a news briefing that his priority would be to restore order.
“Bangladesh is a family. We have to unite it,” Yunus said, flanked by student leaders. “It has immense possibility.”
On Wednesday in Paris, Yunus had called for calm and an end to all partisan violence.
Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who acts as an adviser to his mother, vowed Wednesday that his family and the Awami League party would continue to be engaged in Bangladesh’s politics – a reversal from what he’d said earlier in the week after Hasina stepped down Monday and fled to India.
The president had dissolved Parliament on Tuesday, clearing the path for the interim administration.
On Wednesday, a tribunal in Dhaka acquitted Yunus in a labor law violation case involving a telecommunication company he founded, in which he was convicted and sentenced to six months in jail. He had been released on bail in the case.
Yunus has been a longtime opponent of Hasina, who had called him a “bloodsucker” allegedly for using force to extract loan repayments from rural poor, mainly women. Yunus has denied the allegations.
